Efficacy Of Intravenous Ondansetron In Relieving Nausea/Vomiting And Pruritus Post Epidural Administered Opioids In The Obstetric Patient, Benjamin Stephen Butler
Efficacy Of Intravenous Ondansetron In Relieving Nausea/Vomiting And Pruritus Post Epidural Administered Opioids In The Obstetric Patient, Benjamin Stephen Butler
Doctoral Projects
One prominent side effect in the use of a neuraxial anesthesia is pruritus, with an incidence in the obstetric patient of 60-100% (Kumar & Singh, 2013). Another side effect of an epidural placement is nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting occurs frequently during the progress of labor and is difficult to determine an incidence that is related to epidural opioid administration (Chestnut, Wong, Tsen, Ngan Kee, Beilin, & Mhyre, 2014). A review of literature was performed and established evidence that ondansetron is effective in reducing incidence of pruritus in intrathecal administered opioids for cesarean sections in the obstetric patient. Functional 3-D Cellulose And Nitrocellulose Paper-Based, Microfluidic Device Utilizing Elisa Technology For The Detection/Distinction Between Hemorrhagic And Ischemic Strokes, Alicia Leanne Holler
Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis project is to demonstrate and evaluate an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on a paper microfluidic device platform. The integration of ELISA technology onto paper microfluidic chips allows for a quantitative detection of stroke biomarkers, such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Dye experiments were performed to confirm fluid connectivity throughout the 3D chips. Several chip and housing designs were fabricated to determine an optimal design for the microfluidic device. Once this design was finalized, development time testing was performed. The results confirmed that the paper microfluidic device could successfully route fluid throughout its channels at …
Compounding Fire Disturbance History Encourages Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Regeneration And Community Dominance, Matthew R. Brousil
Compounding Fire Disturbance History Encourages Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Regeneration And Community Dominance, Matthew R. Brousil
Master's Theses
Disturbance is fundamental to forest ecosystem function and overall health, but climate change is likely to increase both disturbance frequency and intensity in the future. Forests subject to increasingly frequent and intense disturbances are more likely to experience compounding disturbance effects. Compounding disturbances may exert unpredicted, non-additive stresses on ecosystems, leading to novel conditions that may exceed the capacity for local species to survive and regenerate. I further hypothesize that compounding disturbances could create conditions misaligned with species’ adaptations by altering physical and chemical growing conditions in forest soils, affecting forest composition, structure, and, subsequently, function for many years following …
Opioid Use In The Cesarean Section Patient With The Preoperative Administration Of Intravenous Acetaminophen, Dana Edwards Bernardo
Opioid Use In The Cesarean Section Patient With The Preoperative Administration Of Intravenous Acetaminophen, Dana Edwards Bernardo
Doctoral Projects
Cesarean sections are one of the most common surgical procedures and there are no current guidelines for the management of postoperative pain control (Darvish, Ardestani, Shali, & Tajik, 2013). Unresolved pain in this population can lead to long lasting problems, such as chronic pain and depression (Booth, Harris, Eisenach, & Pan, 2015). The goal of multimodal therapy with IV acetaminophen for CS mothers was to ensure a rapid and safe recovery process with reduced adverse complications and shortened hospital length of stay. The independent t-test was used to compare the mean time for length of stay, first request of pain …

Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Promethazine is a first generation antihistaminic belonging to phenothiazine family. Because of its strong anticholinergic property, it is used for the treatment of drug-induced dystonia, which is characterized by sustained or repetitive involuntary muscle contractions associated with twisting or repetitive movements with abnormal postures. Promethazine, which is used to treat dystonia, can itself rarely cause dystonia as an adverse effect. Here, we present a rare case of promethazine induced acute dystonia

Methylxanthine Induced Cardiotoxicity And Its Mechanisms: An Experimental Study, Md Shamsuzzaman, Gulati Kavita, Ray Arunabha
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Background: Methylxanthines like theophylline are re-emerging as effective adjuncts in the treatment of obstructive airway disease and several newer mechanisms have been proposed. In view of its effectiveness, pharmacoeconomic viability, and easy availability, it could rationalize the drug treatment in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders (COPD) – but its narrow therapeutic index and resultant safety concerns need to be aggressively addressed, particularly in developing countries. Cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity are amongst the most noted adverse effects associated with its clinical use. The present study evaluated the possible mechanisms involved in aminophylline (water-soluble ethylene diamine salt of theophylline) on potential …

Human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) has become a manageable disease due to antiretroviral therapy. Although many treatment schedules are effective in controlling the viral load, maintaining it for a long period is difficult due to many factors such as adverse effects, long-term toxicity, and dosing schedules, all of them may result in poor patient compliance, treatment failure and drug resistance. The evaluation of these treatment schedules in terms of their efficacy, duration, and acceptance is an important aspect for treating doctors, patients, and policy makers. Therefore, our objective is to evaluate stavudine, lamivudine, and nevirapine regimen in the management of …

Roles Of Nucleolin: Focus On Cancer And Anti-Cancer Therapy, Zhuo Chen, Xinhua Xu
Saudi Medical Journal
Nucleolin, a multifunctional protein distributed in the nucleolus, participates in many modulations including rDNA transcription, RNA metabolism, and ribosome assembly. Nucleolin is also found in the cytoplasm and on the cell membrane, and surface nucleolin can bind to various ligands to affect many physiological functions. The expression and localization of nucleolin is often abnormal in cancers, as the differential distribution of nucleolin in cancer can influence the carcinogenesis, proliferation, survival, and metastasis of cancer cells, leading to the cancer progression. Thus, nucleolin may be a novel and promising target for anti-cancer treatment. Here, we describe how nucleolin act functions in …

Measuring The Financial Shocks Of Natural Disasters: A Panel Study Of U.S. States, Qing Miao, Yilin Hou, Michael Abrigo
Center for Policy Research
This paper employs panel vector autoregression to examine the dynamic fiscal response to disaster shocks. With 50-state, 1970-2013 panel data of state government finance and disaster damage, we estimate disaster impacts on revenue, expenditure, debt issuance, and intergovernmental transfers. We find that following a disaster, states increase program expenditure, but receive more federal transfers. Disasters have limited impact on total tax revenues but amplify fluctuations in sales, income, and property tax revenues. Our findings suggest that disaster-induced additional spending is largely financed through federal transfers, which include not only disaster relief funds but also non-disaster-related public welfare aids.
