An Examination Of Food Insecurity And Its Impact On Violent Crime In American Communities, Jonathan Randel Caughron Dec 2016

An Examination Of Food Insecurity And Its Impact On Violent Crime In American Communities, Jonathan Randel Caughron

All Theses

Food insecurity has been shown to have a negative impact on the health andpsychological well-being of those who suffer from it. Brinkman and Cullen (2011) havealso conducted research that shows food insecurity leads to increased incidences ofviolence and civil conflict in developing nations. However, very little research has beenconducted to examine a potential link between food insecurity and violence in developednations. This paper examines a potential link between food insecurity and the violentcrime rate in the United States at a county level using a least squares regressiontechnique. It also examines how the relationship between food insecurity and violentcrime varies in …

Genetic Basis Of Melanin Pigmentation And Sexual Dichromatism In Domestic Pigeons, Shreyas Krishnan Dec 2016

Genetic Basis Of Melanin Pigmentation And Sexual Dichromatism In Domestic Pigeons, Shreyas Krishnan

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Deciphering the genetic basis of pigmentation in domestic pigeons (Columba livia) affords a unique opportunity to connect microevolution to macroevolution. Domestic pigeons have far greater phenotypic diversity than other domesticates that often recapitulate traits that occur in nature. By using classical genetic approaches and by leveraging the innumerable meiotic events since the advent of pigeon domestication, and population structure, I have mapped traits to genes and begun to deconstruct more complex traits. In this process of investigation one expects to discover mechanisms that may be generalizable to some extent to other birds; however, their generality may be limited in their …

Novel Approach For Selective Decomposition Of Target Water Contaminants Onto Porous Titanium Dioxide, Abolfazl Zakersalehi Dec 2016

Novel Approach For Selective Decomposition Of Target Water Contaminants Onto Porous Titanium Dioxide, Abolfazl Zakersalehi

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Manipulation of physical and chemical properties of matter with nanoscale precision will enhance our ability for fabrication of material with intended characteristics for environmental applications. In this study we presented two main frameworks for addressing non-selectivity issue in TiO2 photocatalysts, which is believed to be a major drawback in full-scale application of this technology. First, a purely physical approach for enhancing selectivity of nanostructured TiO2 photocatalysts toward water target contaminants have been achieved via tailor-designing meso-porous structure of TiO2. This simple, yet effective method is mainly based on size-exclusion as a mean toward preferential decomposition. It was hypothesized controlled mesoporous …

Harmful Algal Blooms And Biological Toxins Productions; From Integrated Monitoring Approach To On-Site Solar Photocatalytic Decomposition, Hesam Zaman Khan Malayeri

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) worldwide has caused concern to environmental and health authorities because of their potential to generate and release biological toxins. In particular, microcystins (MCs) produced from cyanobacteria are of great concern. MCs are among the most powerful natural poisons. The presence of MCs in drinking water sources has raised major concern. The overall goal of this research is to predict formation of biological toxins in water bodies and to develop a new sustainable approach to decompose them, if feasible, on-site and in real-time with minimal efforts, less chemicals, and low energy inputs. In order to …

Quality Of Life After Stroke In Pakistan, Wardah Khalid, Shafquat Rozi, Tazeen S. Ali, Iqbal Azam Syed, Michael Mullen, Saleem Illyas, Qamarunnisa, Nabila Soomro, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal

Department of Medicine

Background: There is very little information about the quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors in LMIC countries with underdeveloped non communicable health infrastructures, who bear two thirds of the global stroke burden.

Methodology: We used a sequential mix methods approach. First, a quantitative analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 700 participants, who constituted 350 stroke survivor and their caregiver dyads. QOL of stroke survivor was assessed via Stroke Specific Quality of Life Scale (SSQOLS) whereas QOL of caregivers was assessed through RAND-36. In addition; we assessed complications, psychosocial and functional disability of stroke survivors. Following this quantitative survey, …

Effective School Discipline Policy And Practice: Supporting Student Learning Through Restorative Practices And Social Emotional Learning Skills, Jennifer Camilleri Dec 2016

Effective School Discipline Policy And Practice: Supporting Student Learning Through Restorative Practices And Social Emotional Learning Skills, Jennifer Camilleri

Dissertations

School discipline is an ongoing area of concern, as keeping children in school and engaged in learning is required not only for their well-being, but also for that of society. In response to the failure of zero-tolerance policies and to the passing of Illinois Senate Bill 100, which restricts disciplinary action that remove students from school, XYZ Middle School is adopting a restorative justice model of school discipline. This model, based on Social Emotional Learning (SEL), is projected to reduce suspensions and address the racial disparity existing in disciplinary practices at the school. Combining SEL and restorative justice practices will …

Assessing A District's Culture Through An Annual School Culture Audit: A Policy Advocacy Document, Robert Tomic Dec 2016

Assessing A District's Culture Through An Annual School Culture Audit: A Policy Advocacy Document, Robert Tomic

Dissertations

Healthy school cultures play a significant role in improving a student’s educational experience as well as creating a professional environment for staff. Sustaining a positive school culture throughout a K-8 district allows for similar experiences for students and provides stability at the staff level throughout the district. The recommended policy for Yorktown School District would require each school to complete an annual school culture audit to ensure the presence of a strong foundation for all stakeholders. Utilizing the School Culture Triage Survey on an annual basis to determine strengths and areas to focus on will provide a school and district …

Beyond Trade Deals: Charting A Post-Brexit Course For Uk Investment Treaties, Lise Johnson, Lorenzo Cotula Dec 2016

Beyond Trade Deals: Charting A Post-Brexit Course For Uk Investment Treaties, Lise Johnson, Lorenzo Cotula

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

The Brexit referendum has raised questions about the future terms of the United Kingdom’s engagement with the world economy. While a debate over the UK’s future approach to trade deals has already begun, a similar discussion has yet to develop on the treaties that govern foreign investment. As this briefing note by Lorenzo Cotula of the International Institute for Environment and Development, and Lise Johnson of CCSI highlights, the stakes are high: ill-designed treaties could leave the UK excessively exposed to legal claims by foreign companies and could fail to address relevant economic, social and environmental challenges. While meaningful negotiations …

The Proximal Effects Of Acute Alcohol Consumption On Male-To-Female Aggression: A Meta-Analytic Review Of The Experimental Literature, Cory A Crane, Stephanie A Godleski, Sarahmona M Przybyla, Robert C Schlauch, Maria Testa

Psychology Faculty Publications

The current meta-analytic review examined the experimental literature to quantify the causal effect of acute alcohol consumption on self-reported and observed indicators of male-to-female general, sexual, and intimate partner aggression. Database and reference list searches yielded 22 studies conducted between 1981 and 2014 that met all criteria for inclusion and that were subjected to full text coding for analysis. Results detected a significant overall effect (d = .36), indicating that male participants who consumed alcohol evidenced greater aggressive behavior toward females while completing a subsequent laboratory aggression paradigm than male participants who received no alcohol. We found homogeneity across all …

Bridging The Gap: A Workshop To Support Sexual Education Outside Of School, Rachel Lambrecht Dec 2016

Bridging The Gap: A Workshop To Support Sexual Education Outside Of School, Rachel Lambrecht

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Sex education cannot simply provide the “facts” about sex; students must be given the space and support to make connections between the information they receive and their own behaviors. In order to meet the immediate developmental needs of young people I have created a one-‐day workshop for girls, which is meant to augment current sexual education programming. The aim of the one-‐day workshop is to bridge the gap between information that girls have received from school programming or parents with the new emotional and physical sensations specific to their developing sexuality, to foster connections with peers, and instill a sense …

Innovations In High Dimensional Data Exploration, Representation And Generation, Bing Wang Dec 2016

Innovations In High Dimensional Data Exploration, Representation And Generation, Bing Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Data with many attributes have become commonplace in a wide range of domains. In these data, the most interesting relations are often multivariate and are generally confusing to most people. Efforts have been made to design proper tools to recognize those high dimensional relationships reliably but those tools are often far off from making use of the innate 3D scene understanding capabilities of the human visual system. We present a framework that eases this barrier by design, called the Subspace Voyager. It decomposes a high-dimensional data space into a continuum of generalized 3D subspaces. Analysts can then explore these 3D …

A West Indian Jubilee In America: British Emancipation And The American Abolition Movement, Dexter Joey Gabriel Dec 2016

A West Indian Jubilee In America: British Emancipation And The American Abolition Movement, Dexter Joey Gabriel

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation, “A West Indian Jubilee in America: British Emancipation and the American Abolition Movement,†charts the impact of British Emancipation on American abolitionism and free African-American communities from the 1830s through the 1860s. On August 1,1834 the British Abolition Act freed by proclamation 800,000 slaves in the West Indies. In the coming decades, in print and in public rituals, the success of the former slaves in the British West Indies became a crucial focal point in the debate on American slavery. This debate took place in the flourishing American print culture that emerged in the 1830s: antislavery newspapers, tracts, …

Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial | Patterns And Predictors Of Untargeted Health Behavior Change In The First Year Of The Women’S Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial, Elizabeth Anne Sarma

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The gateway behavior hypothesis posits that changes in a health behavior that is targeted for change may promote positive changes in other untargeted health behaviors; however, previous gateway behavior studies have shown inconsistent results. The purpose of the current study was to examine the patterns and predictors of change in untargeted health behaviors in the first year of a diet modification trial. Specifically, the study explored change in untargeted physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking behavior in the first year of the Women’s Health Initiative dietary modification trial, in which postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to either control (n = …

At The Juncture Of Homonationalism And Homophobic Nationalism: Sexual Justice Organizing In Uganda And The Paradox Of Transnational Advocacy, Sasha Maria Rodriguez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 propelled Uganda to the forefront of global media. In its initial manifestation, the Bill threatened to penalize “aggravated homosexuality†with the death penalty. The media attention earned by the proposed legislation opened avenues for transnational cooperation and communication between US-based Human and LGBTI Rights organizations and Ugandan kuchus – a Ugandan identity that encapsulates various identities of same gender loving or gender nonconforming peoples. This project focuses on this transnational relationship as it interacts with the dynamic of organizing in the midst of a national project of sexual repression. This dissertation asks how kuchu organizing …

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Approaches To Addressing Ageism: Education And Extended Contact, Ashley Elizabeth Lytle Dec 2016

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Approaches To Addressing Ageism: Education And Extended Contact, Ashley Elizabeth Lytle

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ageism continues to be a widespread problem and is of increasing concern given the growing older population worldwide and youth-centered focus of many societies. Despite the need for a better understanding of attitudes towards older adults, ageism is a relatively understudied area of social psychology. This dissertation sought, for the first time, to compare two theoretical approaches to addressing ageism: education about aging (providing accurate information about aging) and extended contact (knowledge of positive intergenerational contact) as well as their potential combined impact (education plus extended contact). Across two studies, participants were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions: …

Partisanship, Political Information, And Money, Jeeyoung Park Dec 2016

Partisanship, Political Information, And Money, Jeeyoung Park

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation contains three parts - three papers. My dissertation tries to bridge the gap between two perspectives: the socio-psychological model and the rational choice model in voting behavior. The first part investigates how partisans behave in the prediction market. Using an agent-based model, my simulation results show that participants’ initial beliefs about a candidate’s winning probability, confirmation biases in accepting information, and monetary incentives strongly increase changes in participants’ beliefs about the electoral outcome captured by price volatility in the prediction market. The second part explores the microfoundation about individuals’ behavioral motivations in evaluating political candidates. My experimental results …

Farm Work Injuries Among A Cohort Of Children In Kentucky, Usa, Steven R. Browning, Susan C. Westneat, Deborah B. Reed Dec 2016

Farm Work Injuries Among A Cohort Of Children In Kentucky, Usa, Steven R. Browning, Susan C. Westneat, Deborah B. Reed

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Children residing on farms with livestock may be at an increased risk for work-related injuries, compared to children who work on other commodity farms. This study characterizes children's work tasks on Kentucky farms and assesses whether children who work on beef cattle farms are at an increased risk for farm work injuries. The results of a cohort study of children aged 5-18 years (N=999 at baseline) working on family farms in Kentucky, followed for two consecutive years after an initial enumeration five years previously, found that 70% of the children were involved in animal-related chores. Across all age groups, children …

Circadian And Circatidal Rhythms Of Protein Abundance In The Intertidal Mussel Mytilus Californianus, Cory Elowe Dec 2016

Circadian And Circatidal Rhythms Of Protein Abundance In The Intertidal Mussel Mytilus Californianus, Cory Elowe

Master's Theses

The intertidal zone is a dynamic environment that fluctuates with the 12.4-h tidal and 24-h light/dark cycle to predictably alter food availability, temperature, air exposure, wave action, oxygen partial pressure, and osmotic conditions. Intertidal sessile bivalves exhibit behavioral or physiological changes to minimize the persistent challenges of fluctuating environmental conditions, such as adjusting gaping behavior and heart rate. At the cellular level, transcriptomic studies on mussels’ baseline circadian and circatidal rhythms have determined that the circadian rhythm is the dominant transcriptional rhythm. However, as proteins reflect the basic molecular phenotype of an organism and their abundance may differ greatly from …

Examining Illness Invalidation And Illness Perception In Relation To Physical Functioning In The Context Of Cardiovascular Disease, Jaclyn Ciera Turner Dec 2016

Examining Illness Invalidation And Illness Perception In Relation To Physical Functioning In The Context Of Cardiovascular Disease, Jaclyn Ciera Turner

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Invalidation is defined as the perception of cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses of others that are experienced as denying, lecturing, overprotecting, not supporting, and not acknowledging with the respect to the condition of the patient (Kool, 2012). Invalidation has also been suggested to negatively impact patients’ physical health (Kool, 2012). One specific type of invalidation is illness invalidation (II), defined as attitudes of distrust, suspicion, lack of support for, or acknowledgement that a patient is suffering from an illness (Blom et al., 2011). In addition to II, illness perception (IP) is another construct that has been linked to negative physical …

Design And Deployment Of A Real Time Wireless Controller For An Active Angle Foot Orthosis, Mary Ann George Dec 2016

Design And Deployment Of A Real Time Wireless Controller For An Active Angle Foot Orthosis, Mary Ann George

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

The complex ankle foot movements of patients suffering from muscular and neurological abnormalities are supported and restored by an active ankle foot orthosis (AFO). Foot drop is a symptom in which the muscles around the ankle become weak due to the paralysis of the neural system. Patients with foot drop show abnormal gait patterns, which can reduce the speed of walking and increase the energy consumption. The gait pattern deviation in patients with foot drop can be corrected by designing a fuzzy controller for gait pattern. This paper focuses on designing a fuzzy controller for an active AFO that can …
