Nucelotide Substitution Rates In Hantavirus Cd8+ T-Cell Epitopes, Brian Gerald Sikes
Nucelotide Substitution Rates In Hantavirus Cd8+ T-Cell Epitopes, Brian Gerald Sikes
Graduate Theses
Hantaviruses pathogenic to humans are exclusive to rodents. Typically each hantavirus is associated with only one host species. Due to their close association, the geographical distributions are the same. Old World species, such as Hantaan hantavirus and Puumala hantavirus, induce symptoms described as the Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). The New World hantaviruses, such as Andes hantavirus and Sin Nombre hantavirus, share a suite of symptoms that have been described as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). In this study, 16 well-characterized cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) epitopes of the nucleocapsid (N) protein were identified from the literature.
These 16 …
Til Death Did Us Part, The Story Of The Health And Death Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mary E. Edgecomb
Til Death Did Us Part, The Story Of The Health And Death Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mary E. Edgecomb
Graduate Theses
The awe of celebrity, including presidents, creates the impression of beings who are larger than life, without the problems of the common man. Franklin D. Roosevelt, unbeknownst to many Americans, had significant health issues. These health issues predate his paralytic illness and worsened during his presidency. Efforts to maintain his image as the unconquerable president of the United Sates led to concealment of these problems and, in turn, negatively impacted his medical care. While most previous studies focused on individual health issues, this research will show a continuum of medical problems that not only impacted his presidency but also were …
Establishing A Novel Culture System Using 3d Printing To Induce Osteogenesis In Mc3t3-E! Osteoblasts, Lisa Carder
Establishing A Novel Culture System Using 3d Printing To Induce Osteogenesis In Mc3t3-E! Osteoblasts, Lisa Carder
Graduate Theses
Whole organ tissue engineering represents a potential solution to the problem of organ shortage and host rejection; however, the process of producing a three-dimensional, functional organ is extremely complex. Research has used three-dimensional printing in order to combat the cost and time constraints that come with whole organ studies. This project created 3D scaffolds based on the trabecular portion of a sheep talus. Using these raw materials, pre-osteoblasts were injected onto the scaffold to test their proliferation within the 3D space. The purpose of this study was to create a three dimensional environment that was able to be coated and …
An Evaluation Of Blogging As An Educational Tool For Interprofessional Education As Part Of University Experiential Learning, Kelley Robb
Graduate Theses
Since the inception of the Internet, much of our society’s communication has become paperless and instantaneous. The speed at which information can be disseminated has not only changed the way in which we communicate with each other but it has also increased the collaboration between professions, particularly the health sciences. As society shifts to a more virtual environment, it is imperative to assess these online tools to determine whether they elevate our research, educational methods and/or work environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether blogging can be used as an educational tool for interprofessional education in a …

Ecology Of Sceloporus Consobrinus Populations In Two Thermally Different Habitats, Alyssa N. Bangs
Ecology Of Sceloporus Consobrinus Populations In Two Thermally Different Habitats, Alyssa N. Bangs
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
Life history traits in ectotherms are tied to environmental temperature, and many species exhibit morphological and behavioral differences in thermally different habitats. Although these differences are generally attributed to differences in thermal regimes between habitats, most prior research on this topic has been performed across latitudinal or altitudinal gradients. Consequently, I wanted to determine if differences in morphology and behavior are also present among populations of Sceloporus consobrinus that inhabit thermally different habitats at the same latitude and elevation. In this study, I chose sites that fit one of two habitat types: warmer open rocky habitat and cooler, more vegetated …
Strindberg's Miss Julie: An Exploitation Of Genderlect And Liberatory Pedagogy, Jenava Moreau Harris
Strindberg's Miss Julie: An Exploitation Of Genderlect And Liberatory Pedagogy, Jenava Moreau Harris
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
Navigating the complexities of naturalist dramatic literature proves to be a challenge under the best circumstances. How do we attempt to highlight the major themes and tenants of Naturalism through an educational theatre lens? What happens when the show is then double cast due to indecisiveness? How do we handle actors with personal trauma influencing their ability to work with vulnerability and physical contact? These questions and others were answered throughout this master’s thesis production of Miss Julie by August Strindberg. Through a process guided by social research and dramaturgical attention to detail, this director was able to explore a …
Effects Of Non-Consumptive Recreation And Environmental Factors On Arkansas State Park Biodiversity, Bennett P. Grooms
Effects Of Non-Consumptive Recreation And Environmental Factors On Arkansas State Park Biodiversity, Bennett P. Grooms
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
State parks serve a dual conservation role by offering protected habitat to many species while also promoting recreational use of natural resources. Non-consumptive recreation activities, however, have long-term negative effects on the behavior, physiology, and reproductive success of state park biotic communities. The purpose of my research was to investigate the possible synergistic effects of non-consumptive trail use, environmental factors, and trail design factors on avian, mesocarnivore, and woody vegetation communities in Arkansas state parks. During 18 May – 7 August 2015, I conducted avian point counts, trail user counts, set camera traps, and sampled vegetation at 227 points on …
Effective Tandem Hoop Net Sampling Effort For Evaluation Of Channel Catfish Populations In Reservoirs, Philip B. Malone
Effective Tandem Hoop Net Sampling Effort For Evaluation Of Channel Catfish Populations In Reservoirs, Philip B. Malone
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus have an important role in Arkansas’s commercial and recreational fisheries. This importance promoted sampling strategy investigations for obtaining information that assist with future management decisions. My study focused on determining effective sampling effort and sample size requirements needed for detecting changes in relative abundance within Channel Catfish populations, and explored relationships between catch per unit effort (CPUE) and reservoir habitat characteristics. My study was conducted during the spring of 2014 in six reservoirs (Lake Nimrod, Lake Overcup, Lake Catherine, De Queen Lake, Lake Erling, and Lake Columbia). General stock assessments consisting of length frequency distributions, growth …
Developing Best Management Practices For Interior Least Tern Habitat Restoration On The Mcclellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, John Gordon T. Ross
Developing Best Management Practices For Interior Least Tern Habitat Restoration On The Mcclellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, John Gordon T. Ross
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
The interior least tern (Sternula antillarum athalassos) is an endangered shorebird that nests on sandbars in river systems throughout the central United States, and which has lost habitat due to damming and channelization of these rivers. My study sought to quantify the status and trends of the population nesting in the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System (MKARNS) within Arkansas, and to establish best practices for nesting habitat management. The local population of terns remained steady between 2010 and 2014, with approximately 450 adults breeding in this section of MKARNS. Regression tree analysis and principal component analysis showed that colonies on …
Responding To Train Derailments Of Crude Oil Cargos And The Use Of Nims/Ice, Laura Hartline Weems
Responding To Train Derailments Of Crude Oil Cargos And The Use Of Nims/Ice, Laura Hartline Weems
Theses and Dissertations from 2016
Derailments of freight trains carrying bulk cargo are not a new phenomenon in the United States; they have occurred since the 19th century when the first shipment made its way across the nation. However, despite sweeping changes in the past decade to the structure of emergency management in the United States, how the railroads have responded to derailments has not changed. The railroad culture is to operate lean, meaning few people are needed to transport large quantities of cargos and commodities. When a derailment occurs, the culture does not change, and railroads respond with typically few of their own personnel …

Academic Health Collaborative Of Worcester Summer Internships Program Clark University 2016 Report, Hannah Silverfine
Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise
In the past few years, many people and institutions in the city of Worcester have begun to recognize the necessity of achieving improvements in health. In 2015, the Worcester Division of Public Health (WDPH) and Clark University’s Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise began a partnership known as the Worcester Academic Health Department (WAHD). In addition to joining a university and a public health agency, this partnership sought to connect students interested in the public health field with opportunities to engage in practical application of skills and knowledge acquisition. The current Academic Health Collaborative of Worcester (AHCW) evolved from the WAHD, …

We continue support the Federal Bank of Boston “Working Cities” challenge which aims to support social and economic recovery of underperforming small and mid-sized cities in the New England region. We continue to extend our data profiles of these cities located in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and now Connecticut. It is our hope that these data ‘rich” profiles which includes key indicators on health, population and demographic changes, industrial growth, and educational performance can not only support policy development in these targeted areas, but also help in monitoring the progress these cities make over time.

Capabilities, Human Development, And Design Thinking: A Framework For Gender-Sensitive Entrepreneurship Programs, Tonia Warnecke
Capabilities, Human Development, And Design Thinking: A Framework For Gender-Sensitive Entrepreneurship Programs, Tonia Warnecke
Faculty Publications
This paper discusses the ways that capabilities and human development theory can guide the creation of entrepreneurship programs, utilizing a framework of human-centered design thinking. It is well known that a variety of institutional factors shape gender outcomes and gender inequality within entrepreneurship, particularly with regard to necessity versus opportunity entrepreneurship and informal versus formal sector entrepreneurship. Failure to understand the diversity of entrepreneurial activity among women, and the connection (or lack thereof) of such activity to human freedom, leads to biased entrepreneurship programs. This paper links social economic theory and practice by: (1) discussing the ways that capabilities and …

Biomedicine and Animal Models in Research Collection
The multibillion-dollar global antibody industry produces an indispensable resource but that is generated using millions of animals. Despite the irrefutable maturation and availability of animal-friendly affinity reagents (AFAs) employing na€ive B lymphocyte or synthetic recombinant technologies expressed by phage display, animal immunisation is still authorised for antibody production. Remarkably, replacement opportunities have been overlooked, despite the enormous potential reduction in animal use. Directive 2010/63/EU requires that animals are not used where alternatives exist. To ensure its implementation, we have engaged in discussions with the EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM) and the Directorate General for Environment …
