Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler Dec 2016

Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler

Journal of Law and Policy

The current Supreme Court is very protective of speech, including commercial speech. Threats to commercial speech persist nonetheless. This article briefly examines two: the use of commercial speech restrictions as a form of rent-seeking, and compelled commercial speech. Regulation of commercial speech protect is sometimes used to protect established corporate interests from competitors who are less able to bear the costs of regulation, with consequences that extend beyond the economic marketplace. In the case of commercial speech, courts have been unduly deferential to claims of a consumer “right to know” as a basis for mandated labeling and disclosure. Greater protection …

No Drop Prosecution & Domestic Violence: Screening For Cooperation In The City That Never Speaks, Allessandra Decarlo Dec 2016

No Drop Prosecution & Domestic Violence: Screening For Cooperation In The City That Never Speaks, Allessandra Decarlo

Journal of Law and Policy

Throughout history, domestic violence has been infamously kept behind closed doors and outside of our legislature. It was not until the 1960s, due to the efforts of the battered women’s movement, that the U.S. government began to address domestic violence as a social ill and offered protection to victims through statutes and policies in both State and Federal capacities. This note elaborates on one such policy, known as a “No-Drop” policy, which has been implemented by prosecutor’s offices throughout New York City’s five boroughs, as a mechanism to aggressively combat domestic violence. “No- Drop” policies allow prosecutors to vigorously prosecute …

A Balancing Act For American Universities: Anti-Harassment Policy V. Freedom Of Speech, Bridget Hart Dec 2016

A Balancing Act For American Universities: Anti-Harassment Policy V. Freedom Of Speech, Bridget Hart

Journal of Law and Policy

Legal scholars, educational administrators, journalists, and students have all witnessed a rise in students being disciplined by university officials for speech and conduct deemed inappropriate for college campuses. In endeavoring to explain this trend, some academics point to the disconnect between the Department of Education and university administrators regarding the legal standards for campus anti-harassment policies. The lack of clarity regarding what constitutes harassment on college campuses has resulted in the punishment of students by universities for speech and conduct that is normally considered to be protected speech under the First Amendment. This note first provides an overview of the …

Type III secretion systems (T3SS) are central virulence factors for many pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, and secreted T3SS effectors can block key aspects of host cell signaling. To counter this, innate immune responses can also sense some T3SS components to initiate anti-bacterial mechanisms. The Yersinia pestis T3SS is particularly effective and sophisticated in manipulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18, which are typically processed into their mature forms by active caspase-1 following inflammasome formation. Some effectors, like Y. pestis YopM, may block inflammasome activation. Here we show that YopM prevents Y. pestis induced activation of the Pyrin inflammasome induced …

Focusing On Men And Fathers: A Challenge For Social Work Research And Practice, Kevin Shafer, Jennifer L. Bellamy Dec 2016

Focusing On Men And Fathers: A Challenge For Social Work Research And Practice, Kevin Shafer, Jennifer L. Bellamy

Faculty Publications

In introducing this special issue of Social Work Research, we feel it is important to discuss why social work practice and research with men and fathers is of critical importance and deserving of specific attention. Social work researchers and practitioners need to focus on men and fathers, both as a special population and as subpopulations of other groups. A focus on men and fathers is critical because (a) it is a social justice issue for men, women, and children; (b) men are underserved by helping professionals, including social workers, particularly in certain contexts and programs; (c) social workers are uniquely …

Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare Dec 2016

Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Over the past 20 years, conservation efforts in New Zealand have moved from being concentrated in rural and isolated island locations, where exotic mammalian predators are often controlled, to begin to bring native fauna back to major cities. However, human–wildlife conflicts arise when conservation occurs in close proximity to cities. These are particularly intense when companion animals are involved either as potential predators or prey of high-value conservation animals. Within New Zealand, this conflict is particularly fraught around domestic cats (Felis catus) in the urban environment. Cats in New Zealand are recognised as major introduced predators of native fauna, but …

Impact Of Nutrition On Non-Relapse Mortality And Acute Graft Versus Host Disease During Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation For Hematologic Malignancies, J Beckerson, Rm Szydlo, M Hickson, Ce Mactier, A Innes, Ih Gabriel, R Palanicawandar, Ej Kanfer, D Macdonald, D Milojkovic, A Rahemtulla, A Chaidos, A Karadimitris, E Olavarria, Jf Apperley, J Pavlů

School of Health Professions

Abstract The process of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is often associated with poor oral intake and as a result, nutritional status declines. Although it might seem obvious that optimal nutrition is likely to improve outcomes of transplantation, there are no clinical data that directly support this assumption. It is also unclear whether artificial nutrition support (ANS) should be provided as enteral tube feeding (ETF) or parenteral nutrition (PN). In this study we analysed day 100 non-relapse mortality (NRM) and incidence and severity of acute graft versus host disease (GvHD) according to both the route and adequacy of nutritional intake …

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins Dec 2016

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Among other challenges, homeless children often struggle with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems that impair functioning and well-being (Bassuk, et al., 1997). Given the instability of service continuity often present in the lives of homeless families and their children, it is strikingly common for child mental and behavioral disorders to be caught at a later developmental stage among this group compared to both housed and other low-income peers (Grant, et al., 2007). Emergency shelters represent an untapped setting in which to deploy universal, evidence-based screeners for problem behaviors among this population. We implemented universal screening interventions across three shelters serving …

In addition …

Successful Rti/Mtss From Tier 1 Through 4 Requires Everyone., Leonora Clarkson Dec 2016

Successful Rti/Mtss From Tier 1 Through 4 Requires Everyone., Leonora Clarkson

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

RTI/MTSS will be successful if data review of academics and behavior begins with Tier 1 and moves through tier 4. Tier 1 is the most important to evaluate, and sometimes it is the last to be discussed when looking at RTI/MTSS. This session will start with Tier 1 information focusing on universal screening, classroom management, rigor of academics, PBIS, and motivating students. When tier 1 is implemented with success, implementing tiers 2 through 4 become a natural process. Schools need to talk with parents to ensure they understand family history and what has been tried at home. Parents can share …

Re-Conceptualizing Research Misconceptions: Top Ten Myths Demystified, Faisal S. Al-Maamari Dr Dec 2016

Re-Conceptualizing Research Misconceptions: Top Ten Myths Demystified, Faisal S. Al-Maamari Dr

i.e.: inquiry in education

It is generally acknowledged that novice researchers may not be adequately prepared to engage in/with research and that an increasingly widening divide exists between researchers and teachers, and therefore between research and practice. To explore this gap, this paper addresses ten of the most popular misconceptions novice researchers hold in engaging in research about their practice, and offers advice to these researchers towards teacher research engagement. Amongst the issues I describe are the various forms of research, the relationship between research and reflective or exploratory practice, issues pertaining to sampling, methods of data collection, research site access and the juxtaposition …

Okay, Our Courses Are Online, But Are They Ada Compliant? An Investigation Of Faculty Awareness Of Accessibility At A Midwestern University, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current extent of our faculty’s familiarity with the rights, responsibilities, and resources pertaining to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act insofar as compliance and accommodations for online courses. Through the collection of data we sought to heighten awareness and encourage faculty members to look at and think about how their online programs and courses are consistent with accessible design, thereby providing a real opportunity for continuous improvement in both course design and implementation. An electronic researcher-created survey instrument revealed that accessibility compliance for …

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions On Stress Eating, Emotional Eating, And Binge Eating: A Literature Review, Kira L. Minot Dec 2016

The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions On Stress Eating, Emotional Eating, And Binge Eating: A Literature Review, Kira L. Minot

Food Science and Nutrition

This literature review examines the impact of various mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on the obesity-related eating behaviors of stress eating, emotional eating, and binge eating. With the inconsistency of the weight loss industry to provide long-term weight loss results, the United States is in need of alternative methods of weight loss and weight maintenance to combat the current overweight and obesity epidemic. MBIs are thought to be beneficial when targeted at behaviors of weight gain because mindfulness promotes an individual’s awareness of present physical and emotional sensations within the body, including hunger and satiety cues. Self-acceptance and stress reduction are also …
