Activation of the basal ganglia has been shown during the preparation and execution of movement. However, the functional interaction of cortical and subcortical brain areas during movement and the relative contribution of dopaminergic striatal innervation remains unclear. We recorded local field potential (LFP) activity from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and high-density electroencephalography (EEG) signals in four patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) off dopaminergic medication during a multi-joint motor task performed with their dominant and non-dominant hand. Recordings were performed by means of a fully-implantable deep brain stimulation (DBS) device at 4 months after surgery. Three patients also performed a single-photon …

Introduction: Civilians and military personnel develop a range of physical and psychosocial impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI), including alcohol abuse. As a consequence, increased rates of alcohol misuse magnify TBI‑induced pathologies and impede rehabilitation efforts. Therefore, a developed understanding of the mechanisms that foster susceptibility of the injured brain to alcohol sensitivity and the response of the injured brain to alcohol is imperative for the treatment of TBI patients. Alcohol sensitivity has been demonstrated to be increased following experimental TBI and, in additional studies, regulated by presynaptic vesicle release mechanisms, including synapsin phosphorylation. Materials and Methods: Mice were exposed …

Design For Working Day’S Lunchtime: Lunch With Me, Han Zhang
Design For Working Day’S Lunchtime: Lunch With Me, Han Zhang
Theses
Lunch is one of the indispensable meals to take in a day. Eating lunch energizes our bodies and makes us concentrate more on our work. Nowadays, people always have a hard time enjoying their lunch during weekdays most especially college students and office workers because of their fast working mode. These people have limited time during lunch break or working in not so ideal place to eat such as their office. Unlike having meals with families, eating lunch with colleagues can be a huge opportunity of socializing with each other. Fresh new connections can be made in these occasions.

Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Education and Culture
Two artist-educators analyzed their creative process informed by John Dewey’s concepts regarding the act of expression. The essay interweaves a description of their performance piece with a discussion of conceptual processes, including intermediality and collaboration as crucial in art making, learning, and pedagogical efficacy. Both the creation of the piece and the written analysis were guided by concepts Dewey identified as compression, impulsion, and expression. The authors argue that experience and expression exemplify creative learning and are transferable to knowledge construction in all areas of inquiry. Throughout an aesthetic learning process, deep reflection plays an essential role with interpretation and …
Dewey And Sports: An Overview Of Sport In His Work, David Jaitner
Dewey And Sports: An Overview Of Sport In His Work, David Jaitner
Education and Culture
From beginning to end, John Dewey’s oeuvre is filled with philosophical discussions and political comments on the significance de jure and de facto of a wide range of distinct social spaces. In contrast to subjects he addresses regularly and others that he focuses on occasionally, his work does not systematically address sport. Nonetheless, sport is expressly recognized as a noteworthy environment and integrated into lines of argumentation in no small number of areas as an example. This paper provides an overview of the statements he made on this subject and their context, organizing them on the basis of their social, …
What Use Is Instrumentalism? Conservative Pragmatism In Liberal Learning, Seth C. Vannatta
What Use Is Instrumentalism? Conservative Pragmatism In Liberal Learning, Seth C. Vannatta
Education and Culture
This article summarizes four archetypal responses—the reactionary, conservative, pragmatist, and presentist—to the real or perceived threat to liberal learning in higher education. I advocate a balance between the conservative and the pragmatist responses. A conservative pragmatist response resists the canonical rigidity of the reactionary; responds to the ever-evolving social demands and practices that help frame the perennial questions of liberal learning, but values the poetry of conversation and the disengagement demanded by such a conversation, even if social problems initiate the reflective inquiry. The conservative pragmatist response highlights the perennial and the evolutionary, the universal and the particular, and the …
What We Can Teach When We Teach (About) Religion, Larry A. Hickman
What We Can Teach When We Teach (About) Religion, Larry A. Hickman
Education and Culture
Given the increasing diversity of religious beliefs and outlooks in the United States, John Dewey’s proposals regarding “a common faith” can help educators provide the tools for their students to think critically about these and other issues related to the changing religious landscape. Particular attention is given to three groups of students: those who are adherents of dogmatic or exclusivist religious communities; those who share the belief that no legitimate value judgments about religious faith are possible; and those religiously unaffiliated students who feel excluded from the possibility of religious faith.

Measuring Writing Engagement And Emotional Tone In L2 Creative Writing: Implications For Interdisciplinarity, Justin Nicholes 5361162
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
In response to calls for systematic exploration of the creative writing field, this study employed a quantitative design to address two research questions: Do second language (L2) writers who enjoy creative writing in English feel different levels of narrative-writing engagement between autobiographical and critical consciousness-raising creative writing? and Does autobiographical creative writing evoke a different emotional tone from critical consciousness-raising creative writing? Statistical and computational-linguistic analysis of short story and survey data of 30 multilingual creative writers at one U.S. public university answered each question. The data presented show narrative-writing engagement for autobiographical creative writing (M = 5.35, SD …

Restoration Of Functional Mobility For A Young Adult Patient Following A Severe Motor Vehicle Accident: A Case Report, Zachary Mercier
Restoration Of Functional Mobility For A Young Adult Patient Following A Severe Motor Vehicle Accident: A Case Report, Zachary Mercier
Case Report Posters
Over 50 million people world-wide experience non-fatal injuries, and 1.2 million people die as a result of motor vehicle accidents (MVA) annually. Unintentional injury, including MVA, was the leading cause of death in females age 15-24 in 2014. Higher intensity therapy can result in greater gains in functional mobility in rehabilitation settings. Skilled nursing facilities typically care of older patients, but younger patients can also benefit. The purpose of this case report was to document a young adult patient’s response to skilled physical therapy interventions with the goal of returning the patient to prior level of function.

Physical Therapy Intervention For A Patient With Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Caused By Two Traumatic Events: A Case Study, Elyse Detweiler
Case Report Posters
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a collection of pathoanatomical dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and are associated with a variety of symptoms throughout the head and neck. There is a severe lack of supportive evidence for physical therapy management used in the conservative and/or post-surgical treatment of TMD. The dental profession provides much of the current literature on TMD but is limited in conservative and surgical interventions. Research has shown arthrocentesis to be a beneficial procedure to perform initially; long-term outcomes for pain and functional impairments were comparable with conservative treatment. The purpose of this case report is to provide …
Manual And Exercise Therapy For The Treatment Of Chronic Costochondritis In A Male Office Worker: A Case Report, John Livecchi
Manual And Exercise Therapy For The Treatment Of Chronic Costochondritis In A Male Office Worker: A Case Report, John Livecchi
Case Report Posters
For some patients, the use of techniques that typically comprise a physical therapy (PT) treatment plan for costochondritis, such as high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) manipulation, can be intolerable due to pain or even contraindicated because of other comorbidities. This case report describes the successful treatment of a patient with chronic costochondritis utilizing gentler, more conservative manual therapy techniques than those that are typically used in PT management of the condition.

Evaluation Of Parasite Resistance To Commonly Used Commercial Anthelmintics In Meat Goats On Humid Subtropical Pasture, Megan K. Goolsby, Maria Lenira Leite-Browning, Richard Browning Jr.
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematode parasites are a threat to small ruminant industry sustainability. Meat goat does were administered one of four anthelmintics orally (ivermectin (n = 18), moxidectin (n = 18), levamisole hydrochloride (n = 17), or albendazole (n = 19)) or water (n = 18). Fecal samples were collected pretreatment and 12 days post-treatment. Fecal egg counts (FEC) were determined by the modified McMaster technique. The FEC reduction percentages (FECR%) were calculated using three equations. Log transformed FEC means were analyzed by treatment, sire breed of doe, and doe age. Sire breed affected (P < 0.05) pretreatment FEC, but not post-treatment FEC (P = 0.12). Pretreatment FEC did not differ (P = 0.21) by treatment group. Posttreatment FEC varied (P < 0.05) by treatment. Anthelmintic resistance determinations were based on FECR% falling below 90% or 80%, dependent on equation applied. Resistance was detected to all four anthelmintics using each equation. These results suggest the need for alternative methods of internal parasite control in goats.

An Apn-Led Copd Discharge Education Program To Decrease 30-Day Readmission Rates, Moira Elizabeth Kendra
An Apn-Led Copd Discharge Education Program To Decrease 30-Day Readmission Rates, Moira Elizabeth Kendra
Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects
The purpose of this project was to implement an APN-led COPD discharge education program to decrease 30-day readmission rates. This Doctorate of Nursing (DNP) project combined strategies obtained in the literature search and blended these into a cutting-edge and state-of-the-art discharge education program at a major medical center. The significance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) readmission rates include financial implications, a large number of Medicare patients who return to the hospital within 30 days, poor quality of patient care, and poorly coordinated discharge processes. An APN-led transitional care COPD education discharge plan was implemented on the pulmonary floor at …

Herbal supplement sales in the U.S. increased by 7.5% between 2014 and 2015, from $6.441 billion to $6.922 billion, according to newly released data from the Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ). Dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications (OTC’s) do not have to be proven safe or effective before being sold to consumers like prescription medications. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, manufacturers only have to prove their product causes no harm to consumers. Dietary supplement labels are not reliable, since they are not regulated. Without verification a consumer cannot be sure that what is stated on the label …

Flexor Hallucis Longus (FHL) injuries occur when stress is placed on the great toe. FHL tendinopathies are common in ballet dancers, however, not often seen in skateboarders. The most effective physical therapy (PT) rehabilitation protocol for an FHL tendinopathy and subsequent repair in a skateboarding athlete has not been well documented. The purpose of this case report is to investigate a comprehensive PT protocol, including video feedback after an FHL repair in a skateboarding athlete.

ADAM10 and ADAM17 have been shown to contribute to the acquired drug resistance of HER2-positive breast cancer in response to trastuzumab. The majority of ADAM10 and ADAM17 inhibitor development has been focused on the discovery of compounds that bind the active site zinc, however, in recent years, there has been a shift from active site to secondary substrate binding site (exosite) inhibitor discovery in order to identify non-zinc-binding molecules. In the present work a glycosylated, exosite-binding substrate of ADAM10 and ADAM17 was utilized to screen 370,276 compounds from the MLPCN collection. As a result of this uHTS effort, a selective, …
