Evidence Based Protocol: Discharge Delays In The Acute Care Setting, Kylie C. Schaberg Dec 2016

Evidence Based Protocol: Discharge Delays In The Acute Care Setting, Kylie C. Schaberg

Master's Projects

According to Batalden, Nelson, Godfrey and Lazar (2011, p, 25), the clinical microsystem is a “place where patients, families and health caregivers meet” and encompasses all interactions from the moment a patient enters the system up to and including when the patient leaves the system. In order to understand the complex and dynamic changes that occur at the microsystem level, a thorough assessment must be completed. The purpose of this chapter is to gain a greater understanding of the mechanism of the microsystem and the effects that this microsystem has on the process for discharging patients from the hospital setting …

The Role Of Ephb3 In Cortical Vascular Integrity Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Poincyane Assis-Nascimento Dec 2016

The Role Of Ephb3 In Cortical Vascular Integrity Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Poincyane Assis-Nascimento

Open Access Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a major health concern worldwide. One of the earliest and most profound deficits comes from vascular damage and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Despite the consequences of blood vessel destruction, little is known of the cellular responses that occur in vessel integrity following TBI. B class ephrins and Eph receptors are membrane bound proteins that initiate bidirectional signals during cell-cell interactions, and are indispensable for developmental and pathological neovascularization. The role of EphB3 and its ligand ephrinB3 was investigated in vascular integrity in a murine controlled cortical impact (CCI) injury model of …

Condos, Connectivity, And Catch: Analyzing The State Of The Bahamian Spiny Lobster Fishery., Karlisa Alicia Callwood Dec 2016

Condos, Connectivity, And Catch: Analyzing The State Of The Bahamian Spiny Lobster Fishery., Karlisa Alicia Callwood

Open Access Dissertations

Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) is a heavily exploited seafood throughout its range and supports the primary fishery in The Bahamas. However, its long pelagic larval duration and, thus, potential for long-range dispersal increases the difficulty in determining the origins of local populations and complicates management. In recent years, the Bahamian fishery has transitioned to the use of condos (or casitas) as the primary fishing method. Condos are relatively inexpensive to construct and deploy, and it is estimated there are now over a million deposited throughout the Bahama banks. Collectively, these factors, coupled with an increased level of effort in …

Ecological And Genomic Patterns Of The Threatened Coral Acropora Cervicornis, Crawford Reeves Drury Dec 2016

Ecological And Genomic Patterns Of The Threatened Coral Acropora Cervicornis, Crawford Reeves Drury

Open Access Dissertations

The staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, is an important reef-building species on Caribbean reefs that has undergone severe population declines in recent decades. As the abundance of this species has diminished, restoration efforts using the coral gardening method have become increasingly common as a method of mitigating these losses. Using a large scale outplanting experiment, we find evidence of high phenotypic plasticity and low local adaptation driven by coral genotype and the environment, which subtly interact. The flexibility of the growth and survivorship response in this species gives concrete value to genetic diversity, which is variable across regional spatial scales and …

The Disconnect Of Hawaiian Culture And Marine Management In West Hawaii: A Case Study On The Aquarium Trade, Alohi L. Nakachi Dec 2016

The Disconnect Of Hawaiian Culture And Marine Management In West Hawaii: A Case Study On The Aquarium Trade, Alohi L. Nakachi

Open Access Theses

In West Hawaii, marine management and the Hawaiian culture share common goals and ideals. However, the reasoning, beliefs and ethnic identities behind such goals greatly differ. As such, there is a lack of communication and even cooperation between groups. This paper seeks to understand the conflict and interactions between these groups and other interest groups involved with the aquarium trade. The area studied is in West Hawaii where the majority of fish in the state are caught for the aquarium trade (Walsh, 2014). The aquarium trade is analyzed to asses the extent in which social and Hawaiian cultural aspects are …

The Use Of Therapeutic Exercises And Manual Stretching For A Patient Following A Total Knee Arthroplasty (Tka) Revision: A Case Report, Nicholas Cebula Dec 2016

The Use Of Therapeutic Exercises And Manual Stretching For A Patient Following A Total Knee Arthroplasty (Tka) Revision: A Case Report, Nicholas Cebula

Case Report Posters

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an orthopedic surgery involving the total replacement of compartments of the knee joint. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common reason for TKA. Risk factors for OA include: obesity, sports-related injuries, and genetics. The artificial knee joint typically lasts between 15-20 years; early failures may occur due to loosening of artificial components, infection, fractures, and instability. Approximately 581,000 TKA procedures are performed annually, and by 2030, the demand for TKA procedures is expected to grow by 673%. The purpose of this case report is to document the potential benefits of prescribed PT interventions, including therapeutic exercise …

Utilization Of Postural Control Training To Improve Gait Symmetry And Walking Ability In A Patient Following A Lacunar Stroke: A Case Report, Hannah C. Wilder, Amy J. Litterini Dec 2016

Utilization Of Postural Control Training To Improve Gait Symmetry And Walking Ability In A Patient Following A Lacunar Stroke: A Case Report, Hannah C. Wilder, Amy J. Litterini

Case Report Posters

Alteration in gait is one of the most noted impairments following stroke. Improving walking ability is one of the most common goals amongst patients with stroke undergoing rehabilitation. Current literature describes visual and proprioceptive feedback and task-oriented training as effective in improving gait speed, mechanics, strength, and balance following stroke. Based on the research, postural control training may improve walking ability following stroke. The purpose of this case report is to outline physical therapy rehabilitation that utilized postural control training, task-oriented training, and visual feedback to improve walking ability and functional capacity in a patient following a lacunar stroke affecting …

Restoring Gait And Functional Mobility For A Patient With An Ischemic Stroke Through Physical Therapy: A Case Report, Colleen Kelly Dec 2016

Restoring Gait And Functional Mobility For A Patient With An Ischemic Stroke Through Physical Therapy: A Case Report, Colleen Kelly

Case Report Posters

During an ischemic stroke, blood flow is impeded due to blocked artery. Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death and the primary cause of disability and dependency in adults in the United States. Patient age and stroke severity, size, and location are strong predictors in prognosis. Stroke rehabilitation during the first three months can reduce mortality. The purpose of this case report is to provide physical therapy management strategies used during an inpatient stay for a patient who experienced an ischemic stroke.

Case Report Papers

Stroke is the primary cause of disability and care dependency in adults in the United States. Research has found that the risk of mortality post stroke can be greatly reduced through stroke rehabilitation. The purpose of this case report is to provide a framework of physical therapy rehabilitation that facilitated functional mobility and gait in a patient who experienced a stroke. The patient was a 50-year old male who was admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation hospital for physical therapy following a left middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke four days prior. The patient received three weeks of physical therapy after displaying …
