Does Depth And Sanitation Type Affect The Quality Of Faecal Sludge In The Tropics? The Case Of Yaoundé, Cameroon, W.A. Letah Nzouebet, I. M. Kengne, A. Rechenburg
Open Water Journal
Background: Faecal sludge (FS) management is a challenging problem in low-income countries where large parts of the urban population rely on onsite sanitation systems (Koné, 2010; Strande et al., 2014). In these countries, the discharge of raw faecal sludge directly into the environment is a common practice that threatens environmental and public health, because pollution of water resource. To avoid this situation, characterization of faecal sludge for adequate treatment before discharge into the environment is needed. Many studies were carried out on the faecal sludge characterization and treatment (Kengne, 2008; Bassan et al., 2013). Cameroon like other sub-Saharan countries lack …
Effects Of Increased Land Use Changes On Runoff And Sediment Yield In The Upper River Nzoia Catchment, Maloba Joseck Joab
Effects Of Increased Land Use Changes On Runoff And Sediment Yield In The Upper River Nzoia Catchment, Maloba Joseck Joab
Open Water Journal
Managing a watershed is vital to the protection of drinking water, recreational opportunities, and river ecosystem health. However, the effect of land use changes and management practices on rivers is often difficult and unmeasured. With increased anthropogenic activities, land cover has continuously altered. The above scenario has resulted to increased quantity of physical parameters in river water among them, suspended sediments, higher turbidity, colour among others especially during rainy season. This study looks at the current state of the upper river Nzoia catchment in Kenya in terms of sediments and run runoff, compares with past cases, simulates future scenarios and …

The Evolution Of Zero-Tolerance Policies, Stephanie D. Stahl
The Evolution Of Zero-Tolerance Policies, Stephanie D. Stahl
CrissCross
Most Americans today have a largely negative image of zero-tolerance policies (ZTP) enacted to stop and prevent violence in the United States school system. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement, zero-tolerance procedures are policies that mandate predetermined consequences or punishments for specific offenses (Walker). These policies specifically targeted actions considered violent and threatening, such as possession of a firearm or weapon. The concept of zero-tolerance policies was introduced into the education system during the 1980s as part of the failed War on Drugs as an attack on drug usage and violence in schools. …
Birthing Center Versus Hospitalized Birth, Nicolette Larsen
Birthing Center Versus Hospitalized Birth, Nicolette Larsen
CrissCross
There are many risks and benefits of giving birth at a birthing center versus a hospital. Determining the location of birth is an important decision, as women in the world today have many options of where to have their child. Hospitals and birthing centers are two places where medical professionals provide prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for the mother and fetus during this memorable time. While hospital nurses and physicians provide advanced medical care, birthing centers focus on holistic care of the family unit emphasizing mental, spiritual, and physical health. Doctors often perform cesarean sections (C-sections) for non-medical …

Tracking The Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) Corridor And The Human-Wildlife Conflict In Selela Village, Nicole Chlebek, Laura Stalter
CrissCross
The beastly journey of long-distance migration for the African Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) is important for upholding their connections between diminishing protected areas, especially in northeastern Tanzania. However, human development is encroaching into these corridors, creating a human-elephant conflict, which can ruin livelihoods of villagers, depending on the extent of conflict. This study focused on exploring the hypothesized human-elephant conflict on the Selela corridor, specifically in Selela village, as well as GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping evidence of elephant travel along the projected Selela elephant corridor connecting Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), to Selela Forest Reserve (SFR), and finally to …
Cultural Intelligence Sounding The Death Knell For Stereotypes In Business Communication, Eugene A. Ohu
Cultural Intelligence Sounding The Death Knell For Stereotypes In Business Communication, Eugene A. Ohu
Global Advances in Business Communication
Globalization is creating culturally diverse teams. Managers are increasingly challenged to lead multicultural teams towards common organizational goals. It has therefore become imperative that team members be helped to quickly attain a shared understanding of messages. Much research has focused on generating awareness of different cultures and how this knowledge can be used to improve business communication.
Even with this awareness that different cultures exist, stereotypes (of race, gender, national culture) still influence how team members interpret the actions of their colleagues. Studies in social psychology have focused on how stereotypes influence perceptions about individuals or groups of people. Message …

Nuclear Insurance Subsidies Cost From Post-Fukushima Accounting Based On Media Sources, John Laureto, Joshua M. Pearce
Nuclear Insurance Subsidies Cost From Post-Fukushima Accounting Based On Media Sources, John Laureto, Joshua M. Pearce
Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications
Quantification of nuclear liability insurance is difficult without arbitrary liability caps; however, post-mortem calculations can be used to calculate insurance costs. This study analyzes the Fukushima (Daiichi) nuclear power plant disaster to quantify the cost per unit electricity ($/kWh) of nuclear energy from the lifetime of the plant after accounting for the true cost of the liability needed to cover the damages from the nuclear disaster determined from news reports. These costs are then compared to the cost of electricity currently paid by Japanese consumers, and then are aggregated to determine the indirect subsidy for nuclear power providers in both …
Characterizing The Function Of Amino Acid Transporter Acypi008971 In The Pea Aphid/Buchnera Symbiosis, Yu-Ching Hsu
Characterizing The Function Of Amino Acid Transporter Acypi008971 In The Pea Aphid/Buchnera Symbiosis, Yu-Ching Hsu
Open Access Theses
Sap-feeding insect have associated with bacterial symbionts for hundreds of millions years. These symbioses have increased insect fitness, facilitating their persistence through evolutionary time. The symbionts of sap-feeding insects provide their hosts with amino acids that are found at very low concentrations in their diets. Typically amino acid metabolism is partitioned between host and symbiont so that the host synthesizes non-essential amino acids while the symbiont contributes essential amino acids. The biosynthesis of some amino acids however, requires enzymes encoded by both the host and the symbiont. Understanding how amino acid metabolism is integrated between insect host and bacterial symbiont …
Anthropogenic Disturbance Modulates Mammal Community Diversity, Assembly, & Abundance: Emerging Infectious Disease Risk In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Leticia Andrea Gutiérrez Jiménez
Anthropogenic Disturbance Modulates Mammal Community Diversity, Assembly, & Abundance: Emerging Infectious Disease Risk In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Leticia Andrea Gutiérrez Jiménez
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the role of mammalian biodiversity in maintaining overall ecosystem health in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). The study explores the pathways by which anthropogenic disturbance prevents or promotes the emergence of human infectious diseases. I studied two paramount research questions: Question 1: What are the direct effects of anthropogenic disturbance on rodent community assemblages and the consequent indirect effects on public health? I first surveyed the GYE rodent community and their pathogens by using land use as a measure of anthropogenic disturbance (e.g., human settlements, horseback ranches, pastures, undisturbed). I identified pathogens in rodent blood samples by …

Synthetic Ion Channels: A New Class Of Membrane Disruptor And Efflux Pump Inhibitor For The Recovery Of Antibiotic Potency, Mohit Bharatkumar Patel
Dissertations
Antibiotic resistance has become a world-wide health care crisis. In 2013 there were 50,000 deaths in U.S. and EU, associated with hospital acquired bacterial infections. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of new antibiotics in development. Here, we report that synthetic amphiphiles represent a new class of adjuvants that rescue antibiotic potency against multidrug resistant bacteria. Hydraphiles are amphiphiles, designed and synthesized in Gokel lab, that show many of the same properties as protein ion channels. Hydraphiles were previously shown to have antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we report that hydraphiles recover the …
Color-Mediated Foraging By Pollinators: A Comparative Study Of Two Passionflower Butterflies At Lantana Camara, Gyanpriya Maharaj
Color-Mediated Foraging By Pollinators: A Comparative Study Of Two Passionflower Butterflies At Lantana Camara, Gyanpriya Maharaj
Dissertations
Colorful floral signaling and resulting insect foraging behaviors have only been extensively examined in hymenopteran pollinators, especially bees, in comparison to flies, beetles, and butterflies regardless of their ecological importance. Therefore, my study provides novel information by focusing on foraging behaviors of adult passionflower butterflies, Heliconius melpomene and Dryas iulia, to the color changing flowers of Lantana camara. My dissertation which is divided into four chapters, aims to explore various aspects of color mediate foraging in passionflower butterflies by combining observations in the wild with controlled field and laboratory experiments. In the first chapter I reviewed flower color development and …
