The East Mediterranean Triangle At Crossroads, Jean-Loup Samaan Dr.
The East Mediterranean Triangle At Crossroads, Jean-Loup Samaan Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The collapse of Israel-Turkey relations over the last decade has led to a reshuffling of the power plays in the East Mediterranean region. Following the dismantlement of the Ankara-Jerusalem axis, Greece has entered the game by becoming the new ally of Israel in the area. As a result, the new strategic triangle that emerges in the region has implications at both the security and economic levels. Its future will shape not only the regional security system but also the prosperity of the area, for instance by defining the governance of energy discoveries. Therefore, it will have direct implications for the …

© 2015 Elsevier B.V. The Mississippi River fluvial-marine sediment-dispersal system (MRS) has become the focus of renewed research during the past decade, driven by the recognition that the channel, alluvial valley, delta, and offshore regions are critical components of North American economic and ecological networks. This renaissance follows and builds on over a century of intense engineering and geological study, and was sparked by the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico 2005 hurricane season, the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill, and the newly recognized utility of source-to-sink concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and production. With this paper, we consider influences on the …

Sandstones And Utah’S Canyon Country: Deposition, Diagenesis, Exhumation, And Landscape Evolution, David Loope, Richard Kettler, Kendra Murray, Joel Pederson, Peter Reiners
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
South-central Utah’s prominent sandstones and deeply dissected landscapes are the focus of this four-day trip, which begins and ends in Grand Junction, Colorado. Studies of the apatite grains in sandstones adjacent to igneous intrusions are revealing new information on the timing and rate of Cenozoic erosion. Iron-oxide-cemented concretions in other rocks record how reduced-iron carbonates and subsurface microbes interacted when near-surface, oxygenated waters started to flush the reducing, CO2-rich waters from Colorado Plateau aquifers. New geochronologic techniques that are being applied to the plateau rocks have the potential to expand our knowledge of how diagenetic episodes relate to …
The Distribution Of Paleoindian Debitage From The Pleistocene Terrace At The Topper Site: An Evaluation Of A Possible Pre-Clovis Occupation (38al23), Megan M. King
Occasional Papers – Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey
Abstract
Lithic debitage was excavated from all temporal components of the Topper Site, including stratum below Clovis-aged deposits. To determine the nature of lithic assemblage below Clovis the artifacts were carefully examined using traditional methods associated with the analysis of lithic debitage, including aggregate and individual flake analysis. Individual flakes within culturally known deposits, as well those associated with pre-Clovis aged sediments, were examined to determine if they shared characteristics associated with humanly produced tools. The distribution of lithic debitage, as well as non-cultural debris, were also compared between all strata. Statistical tests were utilized to determine the relationships between …
A Distributed Map Animation Framework For Spatiotemporal Datasets, Ahmet Sayar
A Distributed Map Animation Framework For Spatiotemporal Datasets, Ahmet Sayar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Maps are an excellent way to present data that have spatial components. However, when the data being presented vary over time, a simple two-dimensional map ignores an important feature of the data. An animated map that shows a series of two-dimensional maps at successive points in time allows one to add a time dimension to the display of data. The current study proposes a distributed service-oriented architecture to create map animations from spatiotemporal datasets. We extend the open standards GIS web services definitions with a topic-based publish-subscribe paradigm, which best suits the animation requirements. The effectiveness of the technique is …
Dialogue Across Borders: Dam Projects In Yunnan And Sikkim, Payal Banerjee, Li Bo
Dialogue Across Borders: Dam Projects In Yunnan And Sikkim, Payal Banerjee, Li Bo
Sociology: Faculty Books
This chapter explores what a new lexicon of subregionalism might look like. It entails transgressing borders of all types: geographical, disciplinary, discursive, and epistemic. First, we reach across the India-China border to look at their common borderlands. Second, we do not abide by a typical comparative approach by listing the similarities and differences that distinguish India and China as states, then ask whether or how each may compete or collaborate with the other. Instead, third, in comparing two cases of the same phenomenon—that is, local resource management—we talk to each other as researchers and concerned, transnational subjects of India and …

Site Characteristics, Instrumentation, And Recordings Of The Central United States Seismic Observatory, Edward W. Woolery, Zhenming Wang, N. Seth Carpenter
Report of Investigations--KGS
The Central United States Seismic Observatory is a vertical seismic array in southwestern Kentucky within the New Madrid Seismic Zone. It is intended to record the effects of local geology, including thick sediment overburden, on seismic-wave propagation, particularly strong ground motion. The three-borehole array is composed of seismic sensors placed on the surface, in the bedrock, and at various depths within the 585-m-thick sediment overburden. The array's deep borehole also provides a unique opportunity to describe the geology and geophysically measure the complete Late Cretaceous through Quaternary stratigraphy in the northern Mississippi Embayment.
Based on the surface and borehole geophysical …

Quartz-Mica Schist And Gneiss Hosted Clay Deposits Within The Yenipazar(Yozgat, Central Anatolia) Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Ore, Şih Ali̇ Sayin
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Yenipazar deposit of volcanogenic sulfide occurrence, situated approximately 9 km SW of Yenipazar, is hosted in quartz-muscovite schists and gneiss. Following the Late Cretaceous, the quartz-mica schists and gneiss have been altered to clay minerals, resulting in important kaolin deposits. The clay deposits consist mainly of halloysite, kaolinite, smectite, illite, muscovite, chlorite, and α-quartz. Biotite, alunite, jarosite, pyrite, hematite, calcite, low cristobalite, and feldspar are present in minor amounts. In places, some mixed-layer clays, such as kaolinite/smectite and smectite/illite, are also observed within the clay deposits. Barite is present in a few clay samples. α-Quartz is the dominant silica …

The Lar Cu-Mo prospect is located 20 km north of Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. This area is geologically situated in the Sistan Suture Zone. The Cu-Mo mineralization occurs as silicic veins in the Lar igneous rocks and includes hypogene chalcopyrite, bornite, and molybdenite mineralization. The syenite to monzonite host rocks occur as stock and dyke and display granular to porphyritic texture. In this study, mineral chemistry and petrographic examination of igneous rocks are used to constrain the crystallization conditions of the magma. The compositional range of plagioclase is relatively narrow (0.11%-26.05% An), whereas that of potassium feldspar is …
Developing A Chronology For Thinning Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet In New Hampshire During The Last Deglaciation, Taylor Hodgdon
Developing A Chronology For Thinning Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet In New Hampshire During The Last Deglaciation, Taylor Hodgdon
Master's Theses and Capstones
Well-constrained ages for the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) have been developed at key sites throughout New England, providing a framework for the deglacial history of the region. Previous work has focused primarily on documenting retreat of the ice sheet margin, but few studies have attempted to reconstruct changes in ice sheet geometry and flow patterns during its recession. This study provides the first direct age control on the thinning of the LIS in central and southern New Hampshire during the last deglaciation. In situ cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages were developed from four glaciated summits, in order to …

Alongshore Momentum Balance Over Shoreface-Connected Ridges, Fire Island, Ny, Conor Ofsthun
Theses and Dissertations
Bathymetric variations, such as shoreface-connected ridges (SFCRs), modify inner shelf circulation, altering the significance of and relationships between alongshore momentum balance terms. The inner shelf of Fire Island, NY provides a study site representative of SFCRs around the world. During the winter of 2014, hydrodynamic observations (~12 m depth) from 6 ADCPs, 3 SeaGauge pressure sensors, 2 tide gauges, and 2 meteorological buoys were collected over a region of the inner shelf spanning a full wavelength of one such SFCR. Analysis of the data, under westward wind forcing, revealed a predominantly alongshore circulation with localized offshore (onshore) current veering over …
Fluid Flow Through Deformation Band, Huining Zhang
Fluid Flow Through Deformation Band, Huining Zhang
Masters Theses
"Cataclastic deformation bands, which are common in porous sandstone, have the potential to restrict fluid flow. Geological studies have shown that permeability of deformation band shear zones can be one to five orders of magnitude less than for the sandstone host rock. However, recent studies based on simplified analytical estimates have shown that fluid flow in jointed deformation bands may not be retarded since joints play an important role in conducting fluids. In this study, 2 dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is used to simulate the total discharge flow rate through jointed deformations. Variations of single planar and conjugate jointed …

New Hampshire Beaches: Sediment Characterization, Larry G. Ward, Kaitlyn A. Mcpherran, Zachary S. Mcavoy, Maxlimer Coromoto Vallee-Anziani
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The grain size of the natural sediment composing the major New Hampshire beaches under summer equilibrium conditions was determined as a first step in assessing the optimal sediment size that would be needed for beach nourishment. In summer, 2015, seven major beaches including Wallis Sands, Foss Beach, Jenness Beach, North Hampton Beach, North Beach, Hampton Beach, and Seabrook Beach were sampled along three to five transects extending from the dunes or engineering structures (e.g., seawalls) to the low water line. In addition, the beach cross-section was profiled using a rover GPS system or the Emery method (profile rods and the …
Sand Compositional Analysis Using A Combined Geological And Spectroscopic Approach, Molly E. Smith
Sand Compositional Analysis Using A Combined Geological And Spectroscopic Approach, Molly E. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Many minerals, such as calcite and magnetite, show diagnostic overtone and combination bands in the 350-2500 nm window. Sand, though an important unconsolidated material with great abundance on the Earth’s surface, is largely overlooked in spectroscopic studies. Over 100 sand samples were analyzed through traditional microscopic methods and compared to spectral reflectance collected via an ASD Spectroradiometer. Multiple methods were chosen to compare spectroscopic data to sand composition and grain size: 1) existing spectral indices, 2) continuum removal, 3) derivative analysis, and 4) correlation analysis. Particular focus was given to carbonate content. Results from derivative and correlation analysis showed strong …

An Investigation Of Ams In Oman Ophiolite Gabbros, Sarah D. Trutner
An Investigation Of Ams In Oman Ophiolite Gabbros, Sarah D. Trutner
Honors Papers
Crustal accretion processes at mid-ocean ridges are still poorly understood, and several competing models exist that try to explain exactly how magma from the mantle is incorporated into oceanic crust at a crustal spreading center. Ophiolites, or fragments of oceanic crust exposed on land, are useful sites at which to conduct rock fabric studies to understand oceanic crust formation processes. This study focuses on samples of upper foliated gabbros taken from the Oman ophiolite in order to characterize their fabric orientations and contribute to a better model of crustal formation. Much of the focus of this study is on using …

Seismic Reflection, Well Log, And Gravity Analysis Of The Thrace Basin, Northwestern Turkey, Murat Kuvanc
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The Thrace basin is located between the Paleogene the Istranca and Rhdope massifs in the northwestern part of Turkey. Sediments in the Thrace basin accumulated during the early Eocene to the late Miocene, and the basin includes normal and strike-slip faults that were mainly formed in the Miocene. The hydrocarbon potential of the Thrace basin has been investigated by analyzing seismic reflection, well log, and gravity data since the 1930s; the basin has a huge gas reservoir potential and contains the first gas production field in Turkey. To determine the geologic and geophysics features of a portion of the basin …
