The Prescribed Burning Impacts On Soil Water Repellency And Soil Hydrological Properties In Sagebrush-Steppe Ecosystem, Yang Cheng Dec 2016

The Prescribed Burning Impacts On Soil Water Repellency And Soil Hydrological Properties In Sagebrush-Steppe Ecosystem, Yang Cheng

Dissertations - ALL

Prescribed fire is an important tool for rangeland management in sage-steppe ecosystem, yet the long-term effects of this practice have not been well studied. Previous studies of fire-affected soil water repellency have identified the strength and persistence of SWR after burning in different types of forests but have not identified consistent timelines for post-fire recovery. This study explores the impacts of fire and plant community succession on SWR and infiltration properties to further inform rangeland managers regarding the long-term impacts of prescribed fire on SWR and infiltration properties in sagebrush-steppe ecosystems.

The objectives of this study were: 1) To explore …

Thermal And Near-Infrared Analyses For Understanding Martian Surface Mineralogy Through Orbital Measurements, Laboratory Studies And Statistical Models, Cong Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Understanding the geologic evolution of Mars requires a detailed characterization of Martian surface compositions and their geologic settings. Because much of the Martian surface is covered with regolith or unconsolidated materials, in this work I focused on key locations in which to characterize Martian crustal materials as well as assess the degree of influence from physical sorting processes on measured surface compositions from orbit. In Chapter 2, I identified and characterized 26 crater central peaks with distinctive spectral signatures from surrounding plains with thermal infrared and visible/near-infrared data, based on a global survey of Martian impact craters between 10-200 km …

Holocene Glacial Activity In Barilari Bay, West Antarctic Peninsula, Tracked By Magnetic Mineral Assemblages: Linking Ice, Ocean, And Atmosphere, Brendan Reilly, Carl Natter, Stefanie A. Brachfeld

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigate the origin and fate of lithogenic sediments using magnetic mineral assemblages in Barilari Bay, west Antarctic Peninsula (AP) from sediment cores recovered during the Larsen Ice Shelf System, Antarctica (LARISSA) NBP10-01 cruise. To quantify and reconstruct Holocene changes in covarying magnetic mineral assemblages, we adopt an unsupervised mathematical unmixing strategy and apply it to measurements of magnetic susceptibility as a function of increasing temperature. Comparisons of the unmixed end-members with magnetic observations of northwestern AP bedrock and the spatial distribution of magnetic mineral assemblages within the fjord, allow us to identify source regions, including signatures for ‘‘inner bay,’’ …

Paleocene "Flysch-Type" Agglutinated Foraminifera From The Northern Part Of The Eastern Carpathians (Romania), Raluca Bindiu-Haitonic, Sorin Filipescu

Studia UBB Geologia

Representative assemblages of agglutinated foraminifera from the Paleocene deposits of the Suha outcrop in the Tarcău Nappe (Eastern Carpathians, Romania) were analyzed using diversity indices, morphogroups and foraminiferal biofacies in order to describe the paleoenvironmental and palaeobathymetrical conditions of the studied area. The results suggest bathyal environments, close to the Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) and a flysch type biofacies. The assemblages are dominated by coarsely agglutinated flysch-type taxa: tubular (Nothia, Rhizammina, Rhabdammina), globular (Saccammina), flattened planispiral and streptospiral (Rzehakina) and flattened streptospiral forms (Paratrochamminoides and Trochamminoides). The agglutinated foraminifera morphogroups display variations …

Geochemical Comparison Of Ancient And Modern Eolian Dune Foresets Using Principal Components Analysis, David A. Little Nov 2016

Geochemical Comparison Of Ancient And Modern Eolian Dune Foresets Using Principal Components Analysis, David A. Little

Theses and Dissertations

Geochemistry has been used to determine the provenance and diagenetic history of eolian sandstone deposits. However, the grain size, sorting, cementation, and detrital composition of eolian units can change along dune foreset laminae. The purpose of this study was to test for consistent trends of compositional change along dune foresets. Such trends could increase the quality of geochemical sampling of eolian sandstones and possibly aid in estimating the original height of ancient sand dunes. XRF data was gathered for both major and trace elements from the Pennsylvanian to Permian Weber Sandstone, Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, and modern Coral Pink Sand …

Collecting, Preparing, And Synthesizing Well Log Data For Subsurface Mapping: Example From The Bakken Formation, Asel Sherimkulova Oct 2016

Collecting, Preparing, And Synthesizing Well Log Data For Subsurface Mapping: Example From The Bakken Formation, Asel Sherimkulova

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Bakken Formation consists of three distinct members: the upper shale, middle, and lower shale. The upper and lower shales are excellent source rocks, rich in organic content. The organic material in the shales was derived from planktonic algae. Both the upper and lower shales were deposited during a transgressive event in hypoxic to anoxic conditions. The original total organic carbon content in the Bakken shales ranges from 20 to 22 weight percent, however; the content decreases to 10 to 17 weight percent as a result of maturation of hydrocarbons and primary expelling of oil. High …

Imprudence And Intergenerational Injustice: The Ongoing Vices Of Opting For Nuclear Fueled Electricity, Jame Schaefer Oct 2016

Imprudence And Intergenerational Injustice: The Ongoing Vices Of Opting For Nuclear Fueled Electricity, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Despite the U.S. government’s failure to isolate from the biosphere the highly radioactive spent fuel that has been accumulating at nuclear power plants for sixty years, some governmental officials, scientists, nuclear industrialists, and environmentalists are urging increased reliance on nuclear-generated electricity as part of the strategy to mitigate global warming. An ethical analysis of their proposal is warranted, and one promising approach is the theologically grounded process of making prudent decisions like those that Thomas Aquinas outlined and explained in the thirteenth century. Following his detailed method of discovering the facts, identifying a justifiable course of action, and commanding its …

Guidance Index For Shallow Landslide Hazard Analysis, Cheila Cullen Sep 2016

Guidance Index For Shallow Landslide Hazard Analysis, Cheila Cullen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Rainfall-induced landslides are one of the most frequent hazards on slanted terrains. They lead to considerable economic losses and fatalities worldwide. Intense storms with high-intensity and long-duration rainfall have high potential to trigger rapidly moving soil masses due to changes in pore water pressure and seepage forces. Nevertheless, regardless of the intensity-duration of the rainfall, shallow landslides are influenced by antecedent soil moisture conditions. To the present day, no system exists that dynamically interrelates these two factors.

This work establishes a relationship between antecedent soil moisture and rainfall expressed in the form of a Shallow Landslide Index (SLI) at 1km …

“Über Die Liebe”: Love And Sex According To Eduard Von Keyserling, Caroline Urvater

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation is built around an annotated translation of Eduard von Keyserling’s 1907 essay, “Über die Liebe.” The author’s citations are often made from memory and consequently, are not always entirely accurate. This fact is discussed and inaccuracies are corrected.

Chapter One begins with an overview of the historical background of the Keyserling family. It includes biographical material that describes the author’s life and experiences, and introduces his illustrious forbears. It also points to the writers and philosophers who influenced the author’s thinking.

Chapter Two, a review of the literature, discusses some of the dissertations, articles and books that were …

The Growth And Ecology Of Upper Cambrian Microbialite Biostromes From The Notch Peak Formation In Utah, Ken P. Coulson Jun 2016

The Growth And Ecology Of Upper Cambrian Microbialite Biostromes From The Notch Peak Formation In Utah, Ken P. Coulson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Exposure of carbonate rocks within the uplifted mountains of southwestern Utah presents a unique opportunity to study the growth, morphology and ecology of two upper Cambrian microbialite reefs located within the Hellnmaria Member of the Notch Peak Formation. The first reef contains meter-length, strongly elongate microbialites that grew in a deep, subtidal marine environment. These elongate microbialites formed as a result of coalescence of round ‘algal’ heads, a process known to produce compound microbialite structures in shallow water, but seldom explored as a key factor in the elongation of deep, subtidal forms that grew in ancient environments. The second reef …

Elastic Block Modeling Of Fault Slip Rates Across Southern California, Liam P. Dizio May 2016

Elastic Block Modeling Of Fault Slip Rates Across Southern California, Liam P. Dizio

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

We present fault slip rate estimates for Southern California based on Global Positioning System (GPS) velocity data from the University NAVSTAR Consortium (UNAVCO), the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), and new campaign GPS velocity data from the San Bernardino Mountains and vicinity. Fault slip-rates were calculated using Tdefnode, a program used to model elastic deformation within lithospheric blocks and slip on block bounding faults [2]. Our block model comprised most major faults within Southern California. Tdefnode produced similar slip rate values as other geodetic modeling techniques. The fastest slipping faults are the Imperial fault (37.4±0.1 mm/yr) and the Brawley seismic …

Glacier Bay And Alaska V. United States: Who Owns Submerged Lands In Federal Reserves?, Jana Magnuson May 2016

Glacier Bay And Alaska V. United States: Who Owns Submerged Lands In Federal Reserves?, Jana Magnuson

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

In Alaska v. United States, the State of Alaska sued the federal government to quiet title to submerged lands underlying the waters of Glacier Bay National Monument (the Monument) and other marine areas of the storied southeastern region of the state. The State invoked the United States Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction over suits between a state and the United States, and was given leave to file a bill of complaint against the United States. After a Special Master appointed by the Court recommended summary judgment be granted for the United States, Alaska filed exceptions and the Court set oral argument. …

Applying Modern Interpretation Techniques To Old Hydrocarbon Fields To Find New Reserves: A Case Study In The Onshore Gulf Of Mexico, U.S.A., Josiah D. Hulsey

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study shows how the use of modern geological investigative techniques can reopen old, “drained” hydrocarbon fields. Specifically, it looks at the White Castle Field in South Louisiana. This field has pay sections ranging from late Oligocene to late Miocene. The late Oligocene package is underexplored and understudied and contains 3 primary reservoirs (Cib Haz (CH), MW, and MR). This study established the depositional history of these reservoirs. During most of the late Oligocene, the White Castle Salt Dome was located in a minibasin on the continental slope. The CH and MW deposited in this minibasin. The CH is an …

Perchlorate Bioremediation: Controlling Media Loss In Ex-Situ Fluidized Bed Reactors And In-Situ Biological Reduction By Slow-Release Electron Donor, Sichu Shrestha May 2016

Perchlorate Bioremediation: Controlling Media Loss In Ex-Situ Fluidized Bed Reactors And In-Situ Biological Reduction By Slow-Release Electron Donor, Sichu Shrestha

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The main concern of perchlorate exposure through drinking water is its effects on the production of thyroid hormone, which is important for human metabolism and child’s brain development. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listed perchlorate in the contaminant list as well as in the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring rule.

The extent of perchlorate contamination can be categorized by the level of contamination into parts per million (ppm) levels, typically in locations where perchlorate was manufactured, and parts per billion (ppb) levels where perchlorate was used for various purposes. Ion-exchange is generally adopted for treating ppb levels of perchlorate while …

A Pilot Study For Examining Population Movement During The Peri-Medieval Climatic Anomaly In The Nebraska Sand Hills, Nora C. Greiman May 2016

A Pilot Study For Examining Population Movement During The Peri-Medieval Climatic Anomaly In The Nebraska Sand Hills, Nora C. Greiman

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The Sand Hills of Nebraska comprise a dynamic environment of sand dunes that has changed much over the millennia since their formation. Periods of dune reactivation have occurred throughout history, including one such period at approximately A.D. 900-1300 associated with the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA). Much is known about the geologic activity during this period but little is known about how human populations responded to changing environments. I examine the chronology of three sites occupied during the peri-MCA and the change or stasis in population movements via chemical characterization of ceramic artifacts. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was performed on …

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley Apr 2016

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The reclamation of the Missouri Bootheel began in the early twentieth century with the formation of the Little River Drainage District, a publicly incorporated district that stretches across six counties in the Missouri Bootheel. The formation of the district occurred after timber companies deforested much of the land in the late nineteenth century. The district employed skilled engineers and contractors who used large dragline excavators to dig more than six hundred miles of ditches and canals. The formation of the district and the infrastructure it created altered and controlled the natural environment thereby facilitating the development of sustainable agriculture in …

The Importance Of Geologic Study For The Application Of Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs) In Otsego County, Michigan, Matthew Rine Apr 2016

The Importance Of Geologic Study For The Application Of Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs) In Otsego County, Michigan, Matthew Rine

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

The most recent Paris climate talks emphasized the importance of reducing carbon dioxide pollution associated with burning fossil fuels. In an attempt to mitigate CO2 emissions, carbon capture and storage (CCS), which is a process by which CO2 is pulled from a smokestack before it is released into our atmosphere and buried deep underground, is currently underway in Otsego County, Michigan. In order to safely and effectively store CO2 into deep geologic formations, it is critical to gain a better understanding for the geologic “storage tank” in which these fluids will be stored. As part of this …

Geochemical And Petrological Characterizations Of Peridotite And Related Rocks In Marquette County, Michigan, Andrew Lloyd Sasso Apr 2016

Geochemical And Petrological Characterizations Of Peridotite And Related Rocks In Marquette County, Michigan, Andrew Lloyd Sasso

Masters Theses

This study characterizes the following rock units in Marquette County, Michigan in terms of geochemistry and petrology: (1) Presque Isle Peridotite, (2) Deer Lake Peridotite, (3) Yellowdog Peridotite, and (4) Black Rock Point Gabbro. Analyses were conducted to determine if any petrological or geochemical relationships exist between these units, and to assess the potential of these units to host magmatic sulfide deposits.

The generated data and chosen geotectonic proxies indicate that Black Rock Point Gabbro and Deer Lake Peridotite crystallized from unrelated magmas, probably during the formation of the Great Lakes Tectonic Zone (2.7-1.85 Ga). No evidence was found which …
