States Of Hazard: Aquaculture And Narratives Of Typhoons And Floods In Laguna De Bay, Kristian Karlo Saguin Oct 2016

States Of Hazard: Aquaculture And Narratives Of Typhoons And Floods In Laguna De Bay, Kristian Karlo Saguin

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Aquaculture, a modern scheme introduced by the Philippine state to improve fish production and livelihoods, has resulted in contradictory outcomes in its four-decade history in Laguna de Bay. Thisarticle examines the fate and trajectories of these modern schemes through the lens of hazards. It situates the place of typhoons and floods in the introduction and regulation of pen aquaculture technology, and in the practices of living with hazards among aquaculture producers in the lake. In both cases hazards are considered as intrinsic to their narratives rather than as external forces that occasionally disrupt human plans. Keywords: Laguna de Bay • Laguna …

The Politics Of Flood Control And The Making Of Metro Manila, Michael D. Pante Oct 2016

The Politics Of Flood Control And The Making Of Metro Manila, Michael D. Pante

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The emergence of Metro Manila as a political unit is inextricably tied to its history as a flood-prone metropolis. A comparison of flood-control efforts in the 1970s with those that preceded it in 1909 and 1952 demonstrates that flood control in Metro Manila has been a deeply political issue. Opposition from local governments derailed plans, which gained traction only under Ferdinand Marcos, who starting in 1972 initiated large-scale projects and neutered local autonomy by creating the Metro Manila Commission. Marcos’s flood-control program followed his regime’s technocratic, high-modernist approach to disaster mitigation and centralized metropolitan governance, with slum dwellers living along …

Detecting Conceptual Change With Latent Transition Analysis, Glen Davenport Oct 2016

Detecting Conceptual Change With Latent Transition Analysis, Glen Davenport

Doctoral Dissertations

To uphold the core premise of cognitive diagnostic assessment, it is necessary to align different aspects of assessment design. The structure of the test, the measurement model, and the score reporting must align with each other and with the construct being targeted. Conceptual knowledge, as targeted by the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE), can be modeled as a set of overlapping categorical states. As such, latent class analysis (LCA) is the most appropriate measurement model—where students have a probabilistic membership within classes that tend to match with observed mental models.

This dissertation focuses on one particular application of conceptual …

Developing A Vacant Property Inventory Through Productive Partnerships: A University, Ngo, And Municipal Planning Collaboration In Trenton, New Jersey, Luke Drake, Beth Ravit, Laura Lawson

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This paper analyzes the development of an inventory of vacant buildings and land in Trenton, New Jersey that resulted from a research partnership between the Rutgers University Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability; Isles, Inc. a Trenton-based non-governmental organization; and the City of Trenton. Participatory research design between university and NGO staff led to a smartphone GIS survey tool that functioned through web and desktop GIS. University students and community residents collected data through a smartphone GIS application and visually inspected almost every property within the city’s boundaries. Although many vacant land inventories have successfully used secondary data, this project required …

Identifying Opportunities To Inform And Inspire: Tribal Casino Employee Perceptions Of Tribal Self Sufficiency And Philanthropy, Sandra Sun-Ah Ponting Dr, Jess Ponting, Katherine Spilde

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

While the business case for employee engagement and satisfaction is well documented in the service profit chain and the cost savings of employee retention are easily quantified, the means to achieving these related goals in the casino industry is not well known. The pathway to employee engagement and satisfaction is even less well known in the tribal government gaming industry. This paper finds that employees in casinos that are owned by tribal governments in the United States find particular pride in sharing the tribal government’s self-sufficiency, community engagement, and philanthropic activities with casino guests, who often wonder “where the money …

Building A Scholarly Communication Boot Camp For East Carolina University Liaisons, Cindy D. Shirkey, Jeanne Hoover

Charleston Library Conference

A growing demand for scholarly communication expertise led two librarians at East Carolina University to create a series of informative and interactive sessions for liaisons. These boot camp sessions covered topics such as open access, citation management, research impact, data management, authors’ rights, copyright, digital humanities, and OER. The goal of the boot camp was to familiarize liaisons with these concepts enough so that they might be able to talk with faculty about them. To achieve this goal, the developers of the sessions used active learning exercises and a flipped classroom model.

Do Recessions Accelerate Routine-Biased Technological Change? Evidence From Vacancy Postings, Brad J. Hershbein, Lisa B. Kahn Oct 2016

Do Recessions Accelerate Routine-Biased Technological Change? Evidence From Vacancy Postings, Brad J. Hershbein, Lisa B. Kahn

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We show that skill requirements in job vacancy postings differentially increased in MSAs that were hit hard by the Great Recession, relative to less hard-hit areas, and that these differences across MSAs persist through the end of 2015. The increases are prevalent within occupations, more pronounced in the non-traded sector, driven by both within-firm upskilling and substitution from older to newer firms, accompanied by increases in capital stock, and are evident in realized employment. We argue that this evidence reflects the restructuring of production toward more skilled workers and routine-labor saving technologies, and that the Great Recession accelerated this process.

Setting A Standard For Chemistry Education In The Next Generation: A Retrosynthetic Analysis, Gregory T. Rushton, Andrew Dewar, Herman E. Ray, Brett A. Criswell, Lisa Shah

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Faculty Publications

A diverse and highly qualified chemistry teaching workforce is critical for preparing equally diverse, qualified STEM professionals. Here, we analyze National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) data to provide a demographic comparison of the U.S. secondary chemistry teaching population in high-needs and non-high-needs public schools as well as private schools during the 2011–2012 academic year. Our analysis reveals that the chemistry teaching workforce is predominantly white and significantly lacks in-field degrees or certification across school types, though high-needs and private schools are most affected by this lack of teacher qualification. Given these results, we attempt …

Effects Of Power System Stabilizer On Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillation Using Remote Signal, Van-Dien Doan, Ta-Hsiu Tseng, Pei-Hwa Huang Oct 2016

Effects Of Power System Stabilizer On Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillation Using Remote Signal, Van-Dien Doan, Ta-Hsiu Tseng, Pei-Hwa Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The inter-area oscillations in large interconnected power systems often have features of being low-frequency, lightly damped, and affecting relatively more generating units located in multiple areas. They restrict the allowable power flow on tielines and may lead to unexpected contingencies if it is not to be in proper observation. The main objective of this paper is to present a small signal stability analysis applied to Vietnam Power System which is a longitudinal network structure with the consideration of Power System Stabilizers (PSS) in operation to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillation by using local as well as remote feedback signals …

Dune Restoration Experiments During A Typhoon Season On Taiwan?€(Tm)S Si-Cao Coast, Xiao-Ling Tong, Tsung-Yi Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The restoration of coastal dunes, a common form of soft protection, can not only save considerable construction and maintenance costs but also facilitate the maintenance of coastal ecological environments and natural landscapes. Taiwan sustains frequent typhoons and its Si-Cao coast has been seriously affected by previous storms. Restoration of the sand dunes of the Si-Cao coast is necessary and urgent, and the influence of typhoons should be fully considered in dune restoration. Therefore, four test sets were created to perform dune restoration experiments in the northern section of the Si-Cao coast by using different methods, materials, and layouts. We compared …

Social Innovation And Social Enterprise: Integrating Mental Health Interventions, Jacob Waisawa Buganga, Dembe Annet Oct 2016

Social Innovation And Social Enterprise: Integrating Mental Health Interventions, Jacob Waisawa Buganga, Dembe Annet

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

An estimated 450 million people suffer from a mental or behavioural disorder. According to WHO’s Global Burden of Disease 2001, 3% of the years lived with disability (YLD) are due to neuropsychiatric disorders, a further 2.1% to intentional injuries (WHO, 2013). Only 1% of the medical doctors and 4% of the nurses were specialized in psychiatry. The last revision of the mental health legislation was in 1964. The legislation basically focused on the custodial care of the mentally ill persons and is an antiquated kind of law that has been overtaken by events. One percent (1%) of health care expenditures …

The Face Of The Materialist Magician: Lewis, Tolkien, And The Art Of Crossing Perilous Streets, Robert Boenig Oct 2016

The Face Of The Materialist Magician: Lewis, Tolkien, And The Art Of Crossing Perilous Streets, Robert Boenig

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Plenary address, Mythcon 47. Concerns the character of the “Materialist Magician” (Screwtape’s term) in Tolkien and Lewis—the Janus-like figure who looks backward to magic and forward to scientism, without the moral core to reconcile his liminality. Tolkien’s Saruman and Lewis’s Uncle Andrew and Devine are key specimens of this trope, with Merlin standing as a counter-example.

Annual Down-Glacier Drainage Of Lakes And Water-Filled Crevasses At Helheim Glacier, Southeast Greenland, A Everett, T Murray, N Selmes, Ic Rutt, Et Al Oct 2016

Annual Down-Glacier Drainage Of Lakes And Water-Filled Crevasses At Helheim Glacier, Southeast Greenland, A Everett, T Murray, N Selmes, Ic Rutt, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Supraglacial lake drainage events are common on the Greenland ice sheet. Observations on the west coast typically show an up-glacier progression of drainage as the annual melt extent spreads inland. We use a suite of remote sensing and modeling techniques in order to study a series of lakes and water-filled crevasses within 20 km of the terminus of Helheim Glacier, southeast Greenland. Automatic classification of surface water areas shows a down-glacier progression of drainage, which occurs in the majority of years between 2007 and 2014. We demonstrate that a linear elastic fracture mechanics model can reliably predict the drainage of …

The Concept Of A Boundary Between The Latin And The Byzantine Civilizations Of Europe, Piotr Eberhardt Oct 2016

The Concept Of A Boundary Between The Latin And The Byzantine Civilizations Of Europe, Piotr Eberhardt

Comparative Civilizations Review

The article reviews, first, the essentials of the literature devoted to the origins and spatial reaches of the particular civilizations. Then, the boundary dividing Europe into two parts is outlined. This boundary runs from the Barents Sea in the north to the Adriatic Sea in the south. On its western side nations are associated with the Latin legacy, while on the eastern side are those that relate to the Byzantine tradition and later on, to Moscow. Views as to the course of this boundary are discussed.

Ocean-Scale Monitoring Of Mesozooplankton On Atlantic Meridional Transect 21, Pf Culverhouse, R Williams, C Gallienne, J Tilbury, D Wall-Palmer

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

An in-flow instrument for imaging and identifying meso-zooplankton from a ship’s clean pumped sea water supply, from 6m, is described. Meso-zooplankton abundance was measured continuously, from 38 transects and 36 net hauls (0 - 200m), on a 13,500 km passage from the Bay of Biscay to the southern Atlantic Ocean on Atlantic Meridian Transect 21. A Line scan camera was used to give complete imaging of the in-flow water, in contrast to normal area scan cameras that sub-sample the flow. A total of 474 m³ of water was processed from transects and nearly 600,000 particles were imaged and categorized. Similarly, …
