Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Of The North-Eastern Kansas Section Of The Midcontinent Rift System, Ozgun Kamil Sahin Jan 2016

Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Of The North-Eastern Kansas Section Of The Midcontinent Rift System, Ozgun Kamil Sahin

Masters Theses

"The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) is a major Precambrian magmatic province on the North American continent. It formed when the North American craton began to split apart during the Mesoproterozoic era (1,100 Ma). As a result of the extension and possibly the effects of a rising mantle plume, a thick layer of basalt and numerous reverse and normal faults were formed. The basalt layer is buried below sedimentary formations and makes it difficult for seismic techniques to image. On the other hand, gravity and magnetic methods can be utilized for focused depths, and the basalt layer of the system can …

When The Fourth Estate Becomes A Fifth Column: The Effect Of Media Freedom And Social Intolerance On Civil Conflict, Marc L. Hutchison, Salvatore Schiano, Jenifer Whitten-Woodring Jan 2016

When The Fourth Estate Becomes A Fifth Column: The Effect Of Media Freedom And Social Intolerance On Civil Conflict, Marc L. Hutchison, Salvatore Schiano, Jenifer Whitten-Woodring

Political Science Faculty Publications

Media freedom is typically viewed as crucial to democracy and development. The idea is that independent news media will facilitate free and fair elections and shine a spotlight on corruption—thereby serving as a fourth estate. Yet political leaders often justify restricting media freedom on the grounds that irresponsible news coverage will incite political violence—potentially undermining government and in effect acting as a fifth column. So is media freedom a force for democracy or a source of civil conflict? We hypothesize that the effect of media freedom on civil conflict is conditioned by a country’s level of intolerance. Specifically, we predict …

Origin Of Lacustrine Carbonate-Dominated Clinoforms In The Lower-Permian Lucaogou Low-Order Cycle, Southern Bogda Mountains, Nw China, Yiran Lu Jan 2016

Origin Of Lacustrine Carbonate-Dominated Clinoforms In The Lower-Permian Lucaogou Low-Order Cycle, Southern Bogda Mountains, Nw China, Yiran Lu

Masters Theses

"Lacustrine carbonate clinoforms deposit can reflect ancient lake condition like paleoclimate and lake type. Complex lithofacies of a carbonate-dominated clinoform package in lower Permian Lucaogou low order cycle, Bogda Mountains, NW China, provide clues on clinoform-forming processes in a half-graben lake. The clinoform package is ~5.2 m thick, prograding from S to N for ~200 m with a maximum 15o dip angle, and spans ~4 km laterally. A clinoform consists of a lower siliciclastic-rich and an upper carbonate-rich beds, forming a clinoform cycle. Results of petrographic study of 30 thin sections suggest that the clinoform package is composed of mixed …

Provenance And Depositional Environments Of Fluvial-Lacustrine Sandstones Of Lower Permian Lucaogou Low-Order Cycle, Bogda Mountains, Nw China, Xiaowei Peng

Masters Theses

"Compositional and textural maturity of sandstones may reflect provenance lithology and sediment transport distance, which are useful for paleogeographic reconstruction. 37 sandstones in six outcrop stratigraphic sections in Tarlong-Taodonggou and Zhaobishan areas in the greater Turpan-Junggar rift basin were studied to investigate the fluvial-lacustrine sandstone provenance in lower Permian Lucaogou (LCG) low-order cycle, Bogda Mountains, NW China. 400 points were counted in each thin section. All the samples are classified into lithic arenites, subarenites, wackes, and mudrocks. Three Petrofacies are defined. Petrofacies A is characterized by a high lithic content which is dominantly basaltic lithics with minor sedimentary lithics and …

"Let The Beauty Of The Lord Our God Be Upon Us": The Importance Of An Aesthetic In The Ritualized Visualizations Of The Israelite Cult, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap

Faculty Publications

I n recent years, there has been a growing understanding that ritual and ritual environments are not only platforms for symbolic understanding but also structures that have physiological effect as well.1 The physiological effects on the senses, whether consciously perceived or not, add to the overall religious experience. If this is the case, the aesthetics, or the recognition of the sensual effects, is also important. With that in mind, I’d like to suggest that a visual aesthetic played a role in the Israelite cultic experience. More specifically, that a pleasing visual aesthetic as demonstrated in the presentation of color and …

Saving The American Farmer: The Impact Of Danish Agricultural Practices On American Policy Direction, Byron Rom-Jensen Jan 2016

Saving The American Farmer: The Impact Of Danish Agricultural Practices On American Policy Direction, Byron Rom-Jensen

The Bridge

“We are not Denmark.” This assertion by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a national debate in early 2016 as a retort to Senator Bernie Sanders’ calls to learn from Denmark evoked little surprise. The greater surprise was, in fact, that the discussions of Denmark had gone this far. It certainly seemed remarkable when Sanders, shortly aft er announcing his presidential candidacy, praised Scandinavian social programs in areas such as childcare and education, and encouraged Americans to learn from these policies. Such a pronouncement ran counter to traditional path-dependent explanations for American domestic policy, according to which government programs …

Ced After #Ows: From Community Economic Development To Anti-Authoritarian Community Counter-Institutions, Michael Haber Jan 2016

Ced After #Ows: From Community Economic Development To Anti-Authoritarian Community Counter-Institutions, Michael Haber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Community Economic Development (“CED”) and community-based social justice non-profits more generally have been criticized by social justice lawyers, legal scholars, practitioners, and activists, who charge that these efforts too often overlook the structural drivers of inequality, strip social justice movements of their confrontational, activist politics, and fail to give community members meaningful control over their programs. Over the past decades, anti-authoritarian activists — perhaps most famously known through Occupy Wall Street — have developed new frameworks for social change movements based on philosophical commitments to horizontalism, autonomism, and prefigurative politics. Many anti-authoritarian activists have turned their attention to creating community-based …

Comparison Of Sasw Systems For Coastal And Offshore Applications, Finn Groenewold

Open Access Master's Theses

Spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW) systems are an increasingly popular tool for the estimation of shear wave velocity profiles of geotechnical sites as a reasonable alternative to expensive and difficult downhole and crosshole tests. However, there are relatively few commercial systems using this new approach. The prime-objective of this study is to understand the application of a commercial SASW system manufactured by Olson Instruments, Inc. and to compare the results obtained with it to a Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Wave system developed at the University of Rhode Island. For the field testing program, different sized sledgehammers and weights were …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Benefits And Limitations Of Shellfish Aquaculture Management In Rhode Island And Massachusetts, Laura Hansen Jan 2016

Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Benefits And Limitations Of Shellfish Aquaculture Management In Rhode Island And Massachusetts, Laura Hansen

Open Access Master's Theses

The shellfish aquaculture industry in the US has been steadily growing in recent years and demand is particularly high for oysters grown in New England. In 2010, the shellfish aquaculture industry on the US East Coast was worth $100 million, with over 1000 shellfish farms in operation. Because shellfish aquaculture can provide jobs, economic growth and environmental benefits, it is in the interest of coastal states to manage this industry effectively.

Shellfish aquaculture is growing quickly in both RI and MA, but the way in which the states manage the industry differs in the levels of state and local involvement. …

Utah Air Quality: Pm 2.5, Randy Martin, Roger Coulombe, Roslynn Brain Jan 2016

Utah Air Quality: Pm 2.5, Randy Martin, Roger Coulombe, Roslynn Brain

All Current Publications

Particulate matter two-point-five (PM2.5) is a tiny suspended particle of air pollution that can penetrate deeply into our lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream. The 2.5 unit means that the particles are smaller than 2.5 micrometers (a micrometer is one millionth of a meter). In Cache Valley and along the Wasatch Front, these tiny particles form and accumulate to unhealthy levels when air is trapped in the bottom of the valley during cold winter days.

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami

Faculty Publications

Timely and effective knowledge transfer is increasingly important in today’s technologically advanced global market. However, a myopic focus on efficiency has frequently rendered most organizational knowledge ineffective. By coupling technology with a formal system that captures informal stories in an engaging and entertaining way, actors within an organization may be more willing to listen to what geographically dispersed colleagues are doing, and may be more likely to ascribe value to that information. Focusing on the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, we conducted interviews with those sharing and using knowledge, and performed content analyses of 175 knowledge-sharing narratives. …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As a result of climate change warmer temperatures are projected through the 21st century and are already increasing above modelled predictions. Apart from increases in the mean, warm/hot temperature extremes are expected to become more prevalent in the future, along with an increase in the frequency of droughts. It is crucial to better understand the response of terrestrial ecosystems to such temperature extremes for predicting land-surface feedbacks in a changing climate. While land-surface feedbacks in drought conditions and during heat waves have been reported from Europe and the US, direct observations of the impact of such extremes on the carbon …

An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner Jan 2016

An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Bismuth is a heavy metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly defined. In this study, we exposed three different species of macroalgae (the chlorophyte, Ulva lactuca, the phaeophyte, Fucus vesiculosus, and the rhodophyte, Chondrus crispus) to different concentrations of Bi (up to 50 g L-1) under controlled, laboratory conditions. After a period of 48-h, the phytotoxicity of Bi was measured in terms of chlorophyll fluorescence quenching, and extracellular and intracellular accumulation of Bi determined after EDTA extraction and acid digestion, respectively. For all algae, both the internalisation and total accumulation of Bi were proportional to the concentration …

Evaluation Of A Closed-System Cytotoxic Transfer Device In A Pharmaceutical Isolator., N. Vyas, A. Turner, J. M. Clark, G. J. Sewell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

PURPOSE: The occupational risk associated with handling of cytotoxic anticancer drugs is well documented and, in many countries, pharmaceutical isolators are used to contain cytotoxic residues during preparation of cytotoxic infusions. Isolators are difficult to clean leading to concerns that cytotoxic contamination from the work area could be transferred to surfaces of products leaving the isolator. This study investigated the surface contamination arising from the preparation of five anticancer drug infusions (Epirubicin, Fluorouracil, Cisplatin, Oxaliplatin and Carboplatin) in a pharmaceutical isolator and compared use of a conventional syringe and needle technique with a closed-system drug transfer device (CSDTD). METHODS: Wipe …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This study analyses social, economic and political ‘lock-ins’ for understanding community resilience and land degradation. The study focuses on lock-ins from within communities, using four case study communities in Italy affected by land degradation. The analysis highlights the complex interrelationships between various lock-ins, and suggests that the communities are on pathways of declining resilience that may lead to increasing difficulties in addressing land degradation issues in future.

Impacts Of Climate Change, Agroecology And Socio-Economic Factorson Agricultural Land Use Diversity In Bangladesh (1948–2008), S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper examines the impacts of climate change, agroecology and socio-economic factors on agricultural land use diversity (ALUD) using a panel data of 17 regions of Bangladesh covering a 61 year period (1948–2008) by applying a dynamic panel GMM estimator. Results revealed that ALUD and total rainfall have actually increased @ 0.19% and 0.02% per year whereas variability in temperature has declined @ 0.06% with significant differences across agroecological zones (AEZs). Among the climatic factors, total rainfall significantly increases ALUD. ALUD is also significantly influenced by agroecological characteristics. ALUD is significantly higher in Ganges River Floodplains but lower in Meghna …
