Internationalization Of The Grocery Retail Market In Poland, Grzegorz Karasiewicz, Mariusz Trojanowski

European Management Studies

The paper presents the internationalization processes in the grocery retail market in Poland in 1990–2015. The study was conducted on the basis of the analysis of secondary data which allowed identifying foreign entities operating in this market and describing key dimensions of their strategy. The basic conclusions of the analysis are the following: (1) market dominance of foreign companies in the grocery retail market – their market share was above 50%; (2) the breakthrough year in the process of internationalization was 2001; (3) the most common entry strategy was greenfield direct investment; (4) foreign investors came from highly developed European …

Comparing Tree‐Ring And Permanent Plot Estimates Of Aboveground Net Primary Production In Three Eastern U.S. Forests, Alex Dye, Audrey Barker Plotkin, Daniel Bishop, Neil Pederson, Benjamin Poulter, Amy Hessl Jan 2016

Comparing Tree‐Ring And Permanent Plot Estimates Of Aboveground Net Primary Production In Three Eastern U.S. Forests, Alex Dye, Audrey Barker Plotkin, Daniel Bishop, Neil Pederson, Benjamin Poulter, Amy Hessl

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Forests account for a large portion of sequestered carbon, much of which is stored as wood in trees. The rate of carbon accumulation in aboveground plant material, or aboveground net primary productivity (aNPP), quantifies annual to decadal variations in forest carbon sequestration. Permanent plots are often used to estimate aNPP but are usually not annually resolved and take many years to develop a long data set. Tree rings are a unique and infrequently used source for measuring aNPP, and benefit from fine spatial (individual trees) and temporal (annual) resolution. Because of this precision, tree rings are complementary to permanent plots …

Effects Of Hiv Behavioral Interventions For Men Who Have Sex With Men - United States, 1988-2014, H. Elsa Larson Jan 2016

Effects Of Hiv Behavioral Interventions For Men Who Have Sex With Men - United States, 1988-2014, H. Elsa Larson

Open Access Dissertations

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States continue to experience disproportionate HIV disease burden. Historically, most HIV prevention research has focused on reducing sexual risk behaviors through individual-level behavior change interventions. To date, behavioral interventions have not reduced HIV incidence among MSM and combination prevention approaches that package behavioral interventions with additive biomedical or structural interventions are now recommended. The last meta-analysis of HIV behavioral interventions for MSM was conducted in 2008. Since then sixteen new rigorous trials have been identified. New evidence and new recommendations justify an updated meta-analysis to identify the most promising and …

John Dewey's Letters From Asia: Implications For Redefining "Openness" In Rhetoric And Composition, Karen Pierce Shea Jan 2016

John Dewey's Letters From Asia: Implications For Redefining "Openness" In Rhetoric And Composition, Karen Pierce Shea

Open Access Dissertations

Particularly in his early 20th century writings, the American pragmatist philosopher John Dewey advocated open-mindedness as a critical value for education. Rather than a passive kind of tolerance that is acquired through intellectual consideration alone, Dewey recommended open-mindedness that is attained through a combination of contemplation and embodied experience. A close reading of Dewey’s personal correspondence from Japan and China between 1919-1921, previously unexplored to this degree, highlights the profound impact that experiencing the different cultures had on Dewey’s understanding of difference compared to considering them from afar.

In particular, this study sought to investigate how Dewey’s experiences in …

For Love Or Money? The Economic Consequences Of Delayed Marriage, Jason S. Carroll Jan 2016

For Love Or Money? The Economic Consequences Of Delayed Marriage, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

It has been well documented that over the last few decades we have seen a substantial increase in the median age of marriage in the United States. In fact, we are currently at all-time historic highs in these trends. According to the Current Population Survey from the U.S. Census, the median age of marriage right now is nearly 29 years of age for men and 27 years of age for women. Given the trajectory of this trend over the last several years, we are quickly approaching a time in our culture where half of marriages will occur for individuals after …

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen Jan 2016

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents new results of the linkages between primary productivity, bottom water redox conditions and clastic input associated with the Acadian orogeny of the Marcellus Shale.;Chapter 1 compares the isotopic and geochemical characteristics of sediments of a liquids-prone well (WV-7) in Wetzel County with a gas-prone well (WV-6) in Monongalia County, northern West Virginia. The difference in organic carbon isotopes indicates that the dominant organic matter preserved in each core is different: delta13Corg values are lighter on average in WV-6 compared with WV-7. A possible explanation is that a larger fraction of terrestrial organic matter was preserved in the …

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes Jan 2016

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis evaluates how West Virginia's perceptions of debt and dependency were formed and contributed to the state's political economy throughout the nineteenth century. As a part of the Virginia Commonwealth, western Virginians used antebellum political debates to independently control regional resources and seize the political prestige of connecting the nation's east to the nation's west. When eastern Virginians seceded from the Union in 1861, western Virginians saw an opportunity to claim their independence. Secessionist and unionist support provided the political chaos necessary for western Virginians to declare their independence. Political uprisings sprouted up throughout western Virginia. Northwestern Virginia's pro-Union …

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu Jan 2016

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Volcanic eruptions have influenced regional and global climate on annual, interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal time scales. However, past studies have largely focused on the response of global temperature to modern eruptions with the aid of satellite records. This approach limits the number of eruptions that can be studied and restricts our knowledge to relatively small events when compared to the volcanic history of the late Holocene. I used modern climate records to evaluate the effect of recent eruptions on Mongolian climate. I then extended my analysis to the last 2500 years by examining existing and new tree-ring data from Mongolia …

Challenging Historical Gis Through Unstructured Historical Primary Source Materials: Uncovering Sixteenth-Century St. Vincent, Aosta, Italy, James P. Schindling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The challenge to Historical GIS examined in this study is how to enable a system to accommodate sparse, unstructured, and spatially ambiguous data. The goal of this research is to take up this challenge by developing an Historical GIS that allows researchers to gain an understanding of a geography of the past. The study area for this research is the town of St. Vincent in what is now the Italian Alps and the time period is the sixteenth century. Three primary criteria were used in the selection of sixteenth-century St. Vincent as the case study for this research. The first …

Sites Of Education: Race, Memory, And The Conflicting Discourses Of Learning In America, 1827-1914, Douglas Terry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a cultural study that challenges the handling of race in the history of American education by exploring how educational discourse shapes race. It argues that education itself is a manifestation of race, inseparable from the iterative processes of racial formation. While we take it as a prevailing truism that race is learned, this dissertation shows how the educational system itself is central to this learning.;It explores race in the educational landscape in a similar way to how scholars explore tension between history and cultural memory. In this manner, the dissertation focuses on what it terms "sites of …

Migratory Genomics Of Lake Sturgeon, Justine Whitaker Jan 2016

Migratory Genomics Of Lake Sturgeon, Justine Whitaker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lake sturgeon are large, freshwater fish and the only species of sturgeon native to the Great Lakes. Their historic range extends from the Hudson Bay, down through the Great Lakes and into the Mississippi River basin. In the early 1900's, sturgeon became a valuable fishery and were soon overfished for both meat and caviar. This, in combination with damming, pollution, and habitat degradation, caused a drastic decline in their population. Some populations were extirpated, while others have been reduced to 1% of their historic population size (Auer, 1996). The St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS) hosts one of the largest lake …

Immersive Geodesign: Exploring The Built Environment Through The Coupling Of Geodesign, 3d Modeling, And Immersive Geography, Marvin Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

GeoDesign is a relatively new field that serves as a repurposing of many different disciplines concerned with design decisions about the built environment. More specifically, GeoDesign represents a coupling of urban planning concepts with the analytical capabilities of GIS. While GIS has been used in planning mostly in the two-dimensional realm, the built environment is three-dimensional and challenges GIS in the handling of the vertical dimension, notably in floor-by-floor uses in mixed-use developments, basement-level parking, light capture, and intervisibility between structures. This research advances GeoDesign by addressing these three-dimensional issues through the utilization of highly-detailed 3D models using Trimble SketchUp, …

A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna Jan 2016

A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation advances the study of New England's religious history by exploring the complex and contested religious discourse surrounding puritan ecclesiology and the conceptual place of Native Americans within physical and imagined communities. While relations between puritan missionaries such as John Eliot and Thomas Mayhew and early "Praying Indians," or Indian Christians, have been closely studied, this work draws attention to the importance of theology and religious discourse in realms like hermeneutics, ecclesiology, and eschatology in shaping the nature of these exchanges. Despite communal and cultural differences, religious culture frequently served as a means of bridging these gaps to foster …

The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa Jan 2016

The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social studies teachers are sensitive to local school and community values and, therefore, tactful when making decisions about their curriculum (Romanowski, 1996; Shaver, Davis, & Helburn, 1980; Thornton, 1989), including its citizenship aims (Saada, 2013; Sondel, 2015; Vinson, 1998). For this reason, scholars call for better contextual understandings of teachers' curricular-instructional gatekeeping (Thornton, 1989; Vinson, 1998). Rural-specific examples of this phenomenon remain largely unexamined (Martin & Chiodo, 2007; Pattison-Meek, 2012), though rural schools make up 32.9% of all schools in the United States (Johnson, Showalter, Klein, & Lester, 2014) and rural communities offer distinct socio-geographic and socio-cultural contexts (Brown & …

Hydroclimatic Assessment Of Changing Climate On Diarrheal Diseases With Reference To Cholera, Fariborz Nasr Azadani Jan 2016

Hydroclimatic Assessment Of Changing Climate On Diarrheal Diseases With Reference To Cholera, Fariborz Nasr Azadani

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The association of cholera with the climatic processes is well documented. However the effects of changing climate on occurrence of cholera is not yet evaluated, perhaps due to unavailability of geophysical data and their quantitative linkages with cholera. Global climate models (GCMs) outputs are available at coarse resolution of 200-300km, but the diseases usually occur at 10-15 km, therefore, it is rather challenging to link any GCM outputs with a disease. The goal of this research is to develop algorithms that can link diarrheal diseases with changing climatic conditions. Within this context, cholera is used as a model disease due …

Imaging Ductal Carcinoma Using A Hyperspectral Imaging System, Yasser M. Khouj

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive optical imaging modality that shows the potential to aid pathologists in breast cancer diagnoses cases. In this study, breast cancer tissues from different patients were imaged by a hyperspectral system to detect spectral differences between normal and breast cancer tissues, as well as early and late stages of breast cancer. If the spectral differences in these tissue types can be measured, automated systems can be developed to help the pathologist identify suspect biopsy samples, which will improve sample throughput and assist in making critical treatment decisions. Tissue samples from ten different patients were provided …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Marcellus shale is one of the most developed unconventional shale gas reservoirs in the world with a calculated 84.5 trillion cubic feet in proved natural gas reserves in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To better exploit this resource all geological aspects of the Marcellus shale are being studied. In this study, mechanical stratigraphy and interpreted seismic fracture zones within the Marcellus shale are examined. These geologic criteria are assessed for potential to impact gas production by analyzing the gas production of fourteen horizontal Marcellus shale wells within and around the study area.;Mechanical stratigraphy is evaluated from the top of the …

Mesozoic History Of The Southeastern Tibetan Plateau: Sediment Provenance, Paleoclimate, And Surface Elevation History, Fei Shang Jan 2016

Mesozoic History Of The Southeastern Tibetan Plateau: Sediment Provenance, Paleoclimate, And Surface Elevation History, Fei Shang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents new results of a multi-disciplinary investigation of the linkages between erosion, uplift and regional climate change associated with the Mesozoic accretionary tectonism in southeastern Tibet. We studied sedimentary record preserved in a robust and strategically-located geologic archive---the Qamdo basin system. Since tectonics can greatly influence the geomorphic and stratigraphic development of sedimentary basins, studying evolution of the Qamdo basin could provide useful insights into the tectonic information of the adjacent areas. The following questions are addressed in the three chapters of this thesis: • What are the sediment sources for the Mesozoic Qamdo basin? • Is there …

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Use Of Contraband Cell Phones In Secured Facilities, Margaret E. Henderson Jan 2016

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Use Of Contraband Cell Phones In Secured Facilities, Margaret E. Henderson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Offenders accepting contraband cell phones in secured facilities violate state corrections law, and the possession of these cell phones is a form of risk taking behavior. When offenders continue this risky behavior, it affects their decision making in other domains where they are challenging authorities; and may impact the length of their incarceration. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experience of ex-offenders who had contraband cell phones in secured correctional facilities in order to better understand their reasons for taking risks with contraband cell phones. The theoretical foundation for this study was Trimpop's risk-homeostasis and risk-motivation theories that suggest …
