Clementine Hunter's African House Murals: How Personal Memory And Fictional Narrative Interact To Create A Biographical Representation Of Plantation Life During The First Half Of The Twentieth Century In Rural Louisiana, Mary Aubrey Landrum Stafford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this thesis, I present research on Clementine Hunter's African House Murals, a set of nine panels that depict an overview of plantation life in rural Louisiana during the first half of the twentieth century. Hunter is classified as a self-taught artist of place, but is also known as a memory painter. Hunter relied on her personal memories and experiences growing up and living at Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana for inspiration throughout this monumnetal work. However, a character by the name of Francois Mignon played a large role in the final product. During the 1930s, he began re-crafting the …

The Higher-Level Phylogeny Of Cerambycidae Sensu Lato And New Insights Into The Structure Of Tufted Antennae, Stephanie Haddad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles) is a species-rich family of mostly wood-feeding beetles containing nearly 35,000 species. It belongs to the superfamily Chrysomeloidea and includes many ecologically and economically significant species. The higher-level phylogeny of Cerambycidae has never been robustly reconstructed using molecular phylogenetic data or a representative sample of higher taxa, and its internal relationships and evolutionary history remain the subjects of ongoing debate. As such, the systematics and evolution of Chrysomeloidea were reviewed herein to provide context for reconstructing the phylogeny of longhorned beetles using molecular phylogenetic data/analyses. The first higher-level molecular phylogeny of Cerambycidae was reconstructed via analysis of …

Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez
Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
How a company structures its capital greatly affects its strategic options and its strategic decisions according to contemporary thinking. However, while there is ample literature on how publicly held companies’ capital should be structured, less is known about private companies. Additionally, one or more members of a single family typically own the majority of private companies, and unlike public companies, family dynamics influence these firms’ non-financial and financial goals and strategic decisions. This overlap of family dynamics into the business arena complicates conventional approaches or at least makes conventional approaches more difficult to apply.
This dissertation focuses on privately held, …
The Debt Burden Of Entry-Level Physical Therapists In Florida, Steven Benton Ambler
The Debt Burden Of Entry-Level Physical Therapists In Florida, Steven Benton Ambler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the education, autonomy, and high demand for physical therapists both nationally and in Florida, recent graduates have seen steadily rising education costs with disproportionate changes in income once they have graduated and entered the workforce. The growing debt burden of physical therapists entering the workforce, coupled with the growth in projected need and stagnant wages, raises concern about where and how entry-level physical therapists will practice and if these choices will be affected by their debt burden. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional survey study was to identify the debt profile of entry-level physical therapists and explore the relationship …

Significance And Impacts Of The Tripartite Free Trade Area – A Qualitative Assessment, Sambath Jayapregasham
Undergraduate Economic Review
The Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) has been driven by a need for improved growth in African countries following their respective independence. Since then, member nations have been seeking new initiatives to increase trade and to work cooperatively. The idea of regional integration in this ‘Cape-to-Cairo’ free trade zone is set to cover just under two-thirds of Africa's population and improve the flow of goods and investment significantly. This paper explores the significance and impacts of the single FTA on various aspects of economic growth, including welfare, trade, price effects, custom tariffs, government revenues, and the labor market.

Family Communication Concerning End-Of-Life Care Preferences, Lindsay Jo Peterson
Family Communication Concerning End-Of-Life Care Preferences, Lindsay Jo Peterson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Communication concerning the care one wishes to receive at the end of life (EOL) is central to ensuring that wishes are honored. Many studies have examined doctor-patient or doctor-family EOL communication. However, relatively few studies have focused on the occurrence of EOL care discussions among family members. This is an important topic, as research suggests that advance directives (ADs) are ineffective if patients have not involved surrogate decision-makers, most of whom are family members. This study examined EOL care discussions among family members. It used quantitative and qualitative data from a diverse sample of older adults from West Central Florida …

Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski
Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski
William & Mary Business Law Review
A great amount of revenue generated by businesses in the global economy can be linked to the trafficking and enslavement of human beings. Yet, the current discourse on human trafficking fails to recognize the magnitude of benefit consumers, businesses, and economies gain from the work of forced and trafficked labor. Moreover, the limited efforts that seek to address this situation have focused on ways to encourage businesses to voluntarily adopt more socially responsible practices. These measures have had only limited success, and are generally believed to be in tension with the for-profit purposes of businesses. Hence, the task of convincing …

Choice, Cyber Charter Schools, And The Educational Marketplace For Rural School Districts, Bryan Mann, Stephen Kotok, Erica Frankenberg, Ed Fuller, Kai Schafft
The Rural Educator
Pennsylvania is a state with significant proportions of students who attend rural schools, as well as students who attend charter schools. This study examines enrollment patterns of students in brick and mortar and cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania and how these enrollment patterns differ across geographic locale. We analyze student-level enrollment data, controlling for demographic characteristics, and find that, in contrast to brick and mortar schools, cyber charter schools attract students from a variety of locales across the urban-rural continuum. However, rural students exhibit the greatest likelihood of attending cyber charter schools. We discuss the implications of these findings in …
Does Rural Differ? Comparing Parent And Student Reasons For Choosing Cyber Schooling, Dennis Beck, Robert Maranto, M. Danish Shakeel
Does Rural Differ? Comparing Parent And Student Reasons For Choosing Cyber Schooling, Dennis Beck, Robert Maranto, M. Danish Shakeel
The Rural Educator
Cyber-schooling offers potentially greater benefits for rural than urban students, by providing a broader range of courses, ending long commutes, and offering more developed special education services than typically found in rural public schools. We survey students (n=269, 53.7% response rate) and parents (232, 48.7%) at a cyber-charter school dubbed SunTech, to test whether rural subjects choose cyber schooling for distinct reasons. Factor analyses and OLS regressions indicate that rural parents are more apt to choose SunTech for structural reasons such as its broader range of classes and to avoid long commutes to school. In contrast, students were more likely …

Continental-Scale Quantification Of Landscape Values Using Social Media Data, Boris T. Van Zanten, Derek B. Van Berkel, Ross K. Meentemeyer, Jordan Smith, Koen F. Tieskens, Peter H. Verburg
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
Individuals, communities, and societies ascribe a diverse array of values to landscapes. These values are shaped by the aesthetic, cultural, and recreational benefits and services provided by those landscapes. However, across the globe, processes such as urbanization, agricultural intensification, and abandonment are threatening landscape integrity, altering the personally meaningful connections people have toward specific places. Existing methods used to study landscape values, such as social surveys, are poorly suited to capture dynamic landscape-scale processes across large geographic extents. Social media data, by comparison, can be used to indirectly measure and identify valuable features of landscapes at a regional, continental, and …

From Portraits To Selfies: Family Photo-Making Rituals, Krystal M. Bresnahan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
From family-style portraits to selfies, who is photographer and/or photographed varies as families engage, stage, and interpret the visual. How families participate in photo-making changes how individual family members feel about and relate to not only their photographs, but also each other. In this dissertation, I examine photographs as visual and material objects, and include the communication processes and ritual practices of producing, consuming, curating, viewing, and circulating these photos. By framing family photo-making as ritual, I explore how families do photo-making in everyday life, and identify the patterns of choice embedded in the genre of family photography, which symbolically …

Webinar: The Association Between Light Rail Transit, Streetcars And Bus Rapid Transit On Jobs, People And Rents, Arthur C. Nelson
TREC Webinar Series
What are the job, residential development and market rent outcomes of Light Rail Transit (LRT), Streetcar Transit (SCT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)?
LRT, SCR and BRT investments are spreading rapidly across the country but there is scant evidence of their effect on where people work and live, and effects on market rents as an indicator of value. This webinar will summarize several years of NITC-sponsored research into development outcomes associated with these transit investments. The webinar will be led by NITC researcher Arthur C. Nelson who was the principal investigator of two projects: Do TODs Make a Difference? and …

Search results, such as Internet search results, often include advertisements in addition to organic search results. Advertisements can include a phone number for the advertiser that may be activated directly. When the number is dialed, e.g., by activating a call button, the number that is displayed in the calling application (e.g., a mobile phone dialer application) may be different from the phone number in the advertisement. The different phone numbers can cause user confusion and result in lower numbers of calls placed to advertisers. This disclosure describes techniques that allow consistent display of phone numbers in the advertisement and a …

Societies Without Borders
South African students across numerous university campuses joined together in the second half of 2015 to protest the rising cost of higher education. In addition to on-campus protesting, activists utilized Twitter to mobilize and communicate with each other, and, as the protests drew national attention, the hashtag #FeesMustFall began trending on Twitter. Then, what began as a localized movement against tuition increases became a global issue when a court interdict was granted by a South African court against the use of the #FeesMustFall hashtag. This paper traces that global spread of the #FeesMustFall hashtag on Twitter as a response to …
