Phoenix Within A Phoenix: Google Campus Warsaw And The Fascinating, Intentional Rebirth Of Warsaw’S Praga District, Leila Lawlor

Scholarly Articles

The Praga district of Warsaw has been experiencing a rebirth. This phoenix district, lying within the eastern central part of Warsaw, is experiencing a period of rapid growth and revitalization. Five years ago Praga was thought of as crime-ridden and impoverished, but the area’s low rents and large, historic spaces have started attracting creative types – web designers, artists, musicians and others. In June 2014, Praga landed a windfall when internet giant Google announced plans to build a center for technology startup companies in the district. An Empirical Analysis Of The Contribution Of Mining Sector To Economic Development In Nigeria, David Olalekan, Oladipo Olalekan, Noah Afees, Oluwashina Afees, Agbalajobi Ayodele, Sunday Ayodele Jan 2016

An Empirical Analysis Of The Contribution Of Mining Sector To Economic Development In Nigeria, David Olalekan, Oladipo Olalekan, Noah Afees, Oluwashina Afees, Agbalajobi Ayodele, Sunday Ayodele

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Nigeria is richly endowed with vast but largely untapped natural resources including solid minerals and arable land. Mining industries have been viewed as key drivers of economic growth and development process, as lead sectors that drive economic expansion which can lead to higher levels of social and economic well being. Contributions from mining as a percentage of GDP in rich countries are usually between 2-8 percent. In Nigeria, the contribution is still low at 0.15 percent, one of the major factors responsible for this is as a result of over dependence of the Nigerian economy on the proceeds from the …

The Syrian Refugee Crisis: New Negotiation Chapter In European Union-Turkey Relations, Ulviyye Aydin

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Syria is one of the countries where a revolution wave named Arab Spring uprose in early 2011. The most radical discourse from Arab Spring into the still ongoing civil wars took place in Syria as early as the second half of 2011. At the beginning it was a civil protest against Assad’s government. Nobody could not estimate the future developments in Syria. The cost of the war in Syria increases every day. More than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in four-and-a-half years of armed conflict, which began with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war. More than …

Growing Food Security: The Impact Of Community Gardens On Food Security In Denver, Colorado, Grace Catherine Kellner Jan 2016

Growing Food Security: The Impact Of Community Gardens On Food Security In Denver, Colorado, Grace Catherine Kellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Community gardens increase mental health, physical health and social inclusiveness and cohesiveness, while directly connecting gardeners to their environment. In some U.S. cities gardens additionally increase community and individual food security by providing fresh food to those who struggle to feed themselves and their families. This study examined the relationship between community gardens and increased food security in Denver, and is one of the first studies of its kind in this location. Specifically, I investigated who participates in community gardens, why they participate, whether gardens are accessible, and whether community gardens have the potential to improve individual and community food …

Wilderness, The Wild, And Aesthetic Appreciation, Nicole Hassoun Jan 2016

Wilderness, The Wild, And Aesthetic Appreciation, Nicole Hassoun

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Wild nature is a source of wonder and inspiration in part because of its aesthetic value. This paper gives an account of the aesthetic value of wilderness and argues that wild nature is especially likely to give rise to what it will call the transformative aesthetic experience. This account satisfies three criteria John Fisher suggests for a good account of nature’s aesthetic value that might provide reasons for preservation. First, it retains a credible connection with canonical aesthetic theory. Second, it allows us to make a general distinction between our appreciation of nature and art. Third, it avoids the ‘the …

Living Divided No More: An Exploration Of Authenticity In Philosophically Inspired Schools, Melanie Reiser Jan 2016

Living Divided No More: An Exploration Of Authenticity In Philosophically Inspired Schools, Melanie Reiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores school authenticity (SA) by conducting research at three philosophically inspired schools. The study investigates consciousness to identity, integrity to that identity, and ascertains characteristics of authenticity across settings through an investigation of the school's congruence between the philosophy and the school ecology. Two frameworks are utilized to explore school congruence. The first framework addresses establishment of identity--the school's attention to and congruence between the philosophy and their identified core educational principles. The second investigates integrity by exploring adherence to identity--in other words, the school's attention to and congruence between educational principles and the school ecology. I explore …

A Social Responsibility View Of The "Patent-Centric Linear Model" Of University Technology Transfer, Christopher S. Hayter Jan 2016

A Social Responsibility View Of The "Patent-Centric Linear Model" Of University Technology Transfer, Christopher S. Hayter

Duquesne Law Review

Research universities are increasingly recognized for their role in regional and national economic prosperity. The contributions of research universities are primarily related to their role in the production and dissemination of new knowledge into society, including through the education of students.

New knowledge is the seed corn of innovation, and thus drives social and economic development. Given that research universities are sanctioned by society as non-profit, publicly-chartered organizations devoted to the public good, this article posits that their primary responsibility related to the production of new knowledge-especially new knowledge flowing from federally-funded research-is its rapid dissemination. While there are many …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

RNA interference (RNAi) is a gene silencing mechanism that is present in animals and plants and is triggered by double stranded RNA (dsRNA) or small interfering RNA (siRNA), depending on the organism. In the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), RNAi can be achieved by feeding rootworms dsRNA added to artificial diet or plant tissues transformed to express dsRNA. The effect of RNAi depends on the targeted gene function and can range from an absence of phenotypic response to readily apparent responses, including lethality. Furthermore, RNAi can directly affect individuals that consume dsRNA or the effect …

Communication Practices In Technology Companies., Ruth Casey, Marc Gallagher Jan 2016

Communication Practices In Technology Companies., Ruth Casey, Marc Gallagher

Teaching Fellowships

It is contended that the skills or competencies that are required of business graduates by technology companies, range from the ability to communicate complex information about global issues in ways that are accessible to and connect with the general public, to problem-solving and project-based interaction. This represents a shift in the type of communication practice that now characterises the technology company, with its main focus on “agile” frameworks of teamwork. This report examines the context for this development, and explores the role of assessment and pedagogy in preparing the student for these communication competencies, from the perspective of the technology …

Methods For Deriving Individual Marks From Group Work, Miriam Delaney, Lucy Bowe, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Peter Maccann, Christina Ryan Jan 2016

Methods For Deriving Individual Marks From Group Work, Miriam Delaney, Lucy Bowe, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Peter Maccann, Christina Ryan

Practitioner Research Projects

Group assessment is a valuable teaching and learning method (Springer et al., 1999). This has been comprehensively demonstrated in the teaching and learning literature both in general (Johnson et al., 1991) and in specific contexts. This assessment practice promotes questioning, discussion and debate and encourages students to become active team players (DIT, 2013). However, when using this form of assessment, it is important to recognise that it is "individuals who graduate and gain qualifications" (Gibbs, 2009, p.4). The problem of freeloading has been identified and one of the suggested methods of reducing this is to incorporate individual assessment into the …

Facilitating Group Work: A Guide To Good Practice, Ronan Mccrea, Irene Neville, David Rickard, Ciara Walsh, David Williams Jan 2016

Facilitating Group Work: A Guide To Good Practice, Ronan Mccrea, Irene Neville, David Rickard, Ciara Walsh, David Williams

Practitioner Research Projects

Oakley et al. (2004) and Gibbs (2009) observe that owing to the extensive literature on group work, lecturers searching for a succinct guide on how to facilitate this activity effectively would find it challenging to digest such a large corpus. We extensively reviewed the literature in order to produce a quick and accessible guide for lecturers to use. It is our aspiration that this could be referred to when planning and facilitating group work projects with insights and recommendations informed by our research. Moreover, as this work draws on publications from educators in a wide range of disciplines, we expect …

Impact Of A Higher Minimum Wage On Enrollment Of Snap, Victoria Perez-Zetune Jan 2016

Impact Of A Higher Minimum Wage On Enrollment Of Snap, Victoria Perez-Zetune

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper investigates the effect that minimum wage policy has on enrollment in public assistance programs, specifically the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, SNAP. If raising the minimum wage decreases enrollment in SNAP, this could uncover a method to reduce spending without eliminating programs. Using a time-demeaned model to account for fixed effects, I take advantage of the variation in the minimum wage in the 50 states between 1998 and 2014. I estimated that on average an increase in minimum wage in a prior year results in a decrease in SNAP participation by 3.95%.
