Columbus Community Gardens, Amanda Rees, Bert Melix, Chuck Lawson, Cory Hart

Columbus Community Geography Center

This project involved the collection of data from each community garden site in Columbus/Phenix City community by Professor Amanda Rees and Bert Melix, geography student (Columbus State University). Melix completed the digital map using GIS that was then shared with graphic design Professor Chuck Lawson and his student Cory Hart (Chattahoochee Valley Community College) as they developed a quad fold map to hand out to folks involved in Georgia Organics events in Columbus, Georgia. Our community partner was Georgia Organics who provided a mini grant for Bert Melix to complete the data collection and GIS map production. This project was …

Columbus Community Geography Center

With the soft opening of Pasaquan, Marion County’s visionary art environment, in summer 2016, and its grand opening by Columbus State University in fall 2016, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce requested that the Columbus Community Geography Center partner to develop a heritage tour map of the county for welcome centers across the state. This small rural county of 8,700 residences, 60% white, 30% black and 7.5% Hispanic. One fifth of the population live below the poverty level. It recently lost several hundred jobs with the closure of the local chicken processing plant. Plans to launch a tourism program is …

Anabaptist Community Members’ Perceptions And Preferences Related To Healthcare, Dawn M. Garrett Wright, Maria Eve Martin, M. Susan Jones

Nursing Faculty Publications

The plain Anabaptists are thought to differ from mainstream U.S. health care beliefs and practices. Many non-Anabaptist health care providers have limited knowledge of the specific health beliefs and preferences of Anabaptists, which can lead to misunderstandings. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to collect information from Anabaptist community members related to health care beliefs and preferences in their communities. Participants, who were members of various plain Anabaptist communities, completed a questionnaire containing open-ended questions about health issues. Seven themes emerged in results: (1) health viewed as a gift from God that provides the ability to work; (2) …

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Background

EuroAmerican land-use and its legacies have transformed forest structure and composition across the United States (US). More accurate reconstructions of historical states are critical to understanding the processes governing past, current, and future forest dynamics. Here we present new gridded (8x8km) reconstructions of pre-settlement (1800s) forest composition and structure from the upper Midwestern US (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and most of Michigan), using 19th Century Public Land Survey System (PLSS), with estimates of relative composition, above-ground biomass, stem density, and basal area for 28 tree types. This mapping is more robust than past efforts, using spatially varying correction factors to accommodate …

Graduate Students Navigating Social-Ecological Research: Insights From The Long-Term Ecological Research Network, Sydne Record, Paige Ferguson, Elise Benveniste, Rose Graves, Vera Pfeiffer, Michele Romolini, Christie Yorke, Ben Beardmore

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Interdisciplinary, collaborative research capable of capturing the feedbacks between biophysical and social systems can improve the capacity for sustainable environmental decision making. Networks of researchers provide unique opportunities to foster social-ecological inquiry. Although insights into interdisciplinary research have been discussed elsewhere, they rarely address the role of networks and often come from the perspectives of more senior scientists. We have provided graduate student perspectives on interdisciplinary degree paths from within the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network. Focusing on data from a survey of graduate students in the LTER Network and four self-identified successful graduate student research experiences, we examined the …

Impacting Factors On Elementary Students Who Have High Levels Of Success In School While Living With Low Socioeconomic Status, Casey Patterson Smitherman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to deliver a better understanding of an impoverished students perspective of school success and, in particular, what factors lead students to be successful. In an effort to better understand why some students beat the odds, I met with groups of fifth and sixth grade students who have experienced school success on a variety of measures to hear directly from these preadolescents about what they believed has fostered their success. Three overarching themes emerged from the focus groups held at two different intermediate level schools in metropolitan suburban districts in Indianapolis, Indiana (a) …

Cultural Competency In Game Based Three Dimensional Battlefield Simulations, Michael A. Dascanio

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was that the ability of Game Based Three Dimensional Battlefield Simulations to train cultural competency in U.S. Army officers is unknown. The study sample included officers enrolled in Army Engineer School Basic Officer Course during a three month period from January 2016 to March 2016. To establish a baseline of cultural competency, the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) was administered to students prior to training in virtual battlefield simulations. The CQS is a questionnaire constructed specifically to measure cultural competency. Once the level of cultural competency development was documented, the next phase was to conduct training …

The Indiana State Senate Internship: A Quality-Of-Life Perspective And Its Place As An Innovative Education Model, Jeff Papa

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The gap between the expectations and norms of higher Educational institutions and post-graduation employers can sometimes be wide. Internships and other experiential endeavors can help bridge this gap and provide a link between the two spheres, possibly with each component reinforcing the other. This paper examines in detail one such program: the Indiana State Senate Majority Internship Program, and relates how the experiences of this program compare to predictions and suggestions found in relevant literature.

How Cosmopolitan Are International Law Professors?, Ryan Scoville, Milan Markovic

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article offers an empirical answer to a question of interest among scholars of comparative international law: why do American views about international law appear at times to differ from those of other countries? We contend that part of the answer lies in legal education. Conducting a survey of the educational and professional backgrounds of nearly 150 legal academics, we reveal evidence that professors of international law in the United States often lack significant foreign legal experience, particularly outside of the West. Sociological research suggests that this tendency leads professors to teach international law from predominantly nationalistic and Western perspectives, …

Issue 10 is an issue of firsts. It's our first issue as editors and, more importantly, it represents the first iteration of our vision to innovate Bridges to better reflect its dynamic content. To this end, one of our main initiatives is to showcase more student talent at all levels of production. In addition to authoring the content, Coastal students are also responsible for the layout, design, and photography you see here. They also did much of the behind-the-scenes work—including public relations communications, copyediting, and proofing—that made this issue possible. In Fall 2016, Bridges will benefit from even more student …

The Bill Of Lading In An Era Of Electronic Commerce: Legal Developments And The Reform Options For Nigeria, Kenneth Ugwuokpe Jan 2016

The Bill Of Lading In An Era Of Electronic Commerce: Legal Developments And The Reform Options For Nigeria, Kenneth Ugwuokpe

LLM Theses

One of the pervasive effects of the advancement in information and communication technology is a radical shift in the means of conducting business transactions. With the digitalization of the global economy, business transactions are increasingly conducted in an electronic medium. The bill of lading, as the most important ocean transport document, has, in response to the needs of the times, passed through many phases of development to its present electronic nature. The problem however, is adapting the challenges of electronic commerce to the old contractual legal order. For the bill of lading, the challenge is the replication of all its …

Single-Locus Versus Multilocus Patterns Of Local Adaptation To Climate In Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus, Pinaceae), Om P. Rajora, Andrew J. Eckert, John W. R. Zinck Jan 2016

Single-Locus Versus Multilocus Patterns Of Local Adaptation To Climate In Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus, Pinaceae), Om P. Rajora, Andrew J. Eckert, John W. R. Zinck

Biology Publications

Natural plant populations are often adapted to their local climate and environmental conditions, and populations of forest trees offer some of the best examples of this pattern. However, little empirical work has focused on the relative contribution of single-locus versus multilocus effects to the genetic architecture of local adaptation in plants/forest trees. Here, we employ eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) to test the hypothesis that it is the inter-genic effects that primarily drive climate-induced local adaptation. The genetic structure of 29 range-wide natural populations of eastern white pine was determined in relation to local climatic factors using both …

Examining New Vistas In Leadership Learning With Technology, Lorayne Robertson, Jill Harvey, Janani Srikantha, Damali Thomas, Kavita Anand

Internationalization, Globalization and Exchange in Higher Education

Technology-enabled learning can open new vistas in higher education. Moving a course online, however, does not guarantee that students will be more engaged, nor that they will think more critically, or understand more deeply. Online learning does create new digital learning spaces where students can make connections without the constraints of physical co-location. This case study outlines the experiences of a small group of students in the same graduate course who chose an opportunity to work in an authentic, cross-continental context within a global, professional learning community. The students were able to “see” leadership theory in practice through the investigation …

Case Studies Of Cavity And External Wall Insulation Retrofitted Under The Irish Home Energy Saving Scheme: Technical Analysis And Occupant Perspectives, Aimee Byrne, Gerard Byrne, Garrett O'Donnell, Anthony Robinson

Articles

The residential sector represents 27% of primary energy consumption in Ireland. This paper examines the case study of the Irish government’s national grant scheme to encourage energy efficiency retrofit in private housing. That is the Home Energy Saving (HES) Scheme, later rebranded the Better Energy: Homes (BEH) Scheme. The methodology involved monitoring several homes immediately before and after retrofit alongside discussions with occupants. The examination focused on specific measures commonly introduced through the HES/BEH programme − cavity and external wall insulation. It has been found that a significant decrease in heat loss through the walls was measured in all cases. …

Hunting As A Management Tool? Cougar-Human Conflict Is Positively Related To Trophy Hunting, Kristine J. Teichman, Bogdan Cristescu, Chris T. Darimont Jan 2016

Hunting As A Management Tool? Cougar-Human Conflict Is Positively Related To Trophy Hunting, Kristine J. Teichman, Bogdan Cristescu, Chris T. Darimont

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection

Background: Overexploitation and persecution of large carnivores resulting from conflict with humans comprise major causes of declines worldwide. Although little is known about the interplay between these mortality types, hunting of predators remains a common management strategy aimed at reducing predator-human conflict. Emerging theory and data, however, caution that such policy can alter the age structure of populations, triggering increased conflict in which conflict-prone juveniles are involved.

Results: Using a 30-year dataset on human-caused cougar (Puma concolor) kills in British Columbia (BC), Canada, we examined relationships between hunter-caused and conflict-associated mortality. Individuals that were killed via conflict with humans were …
