The Adoption And Use Of The Hirschman–Herfindahl Index In Nonprofit Research: Does Revenue Diversification Measurement Matter?, Grace L. Chikoto, Qianhua Ling, Daniel G. Neely Jun 2016

The Adoption And Use Of The Hirschman–Herfindahl Index In Nonprofit Research: Does Revenue Diversification Measurement Matter?, Grace L. Chikoto, Qianhua Ling, Daniel G. Neely

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

Since its introduction by Tuckman and Chang, the Hirschman–Herfindahl Index (HHI) has been widely adopted into the nonprofit literature as a precise measure of revenue concentration. This widespread adoption has been characterized by diverse composition, with the HHI’s calculation being largely determined by the nature of the available data and the degree to which it contained disaggregated measures of revenue. Using the NCCS 990 Digitized Data, we perform an acid test on whether different HHI measures yield significantly different results. Four measures of revenue concentration—an aggregated measure based on three revenue streams, an aggregated measure separating government grants from other …

The Invention Of Order: Modern Spatial Concepts And The Emergence Of The Americas, Don T. Deere Jun 2016

The Invention Of Order: Modern Spatial Concepts And The Emergence Of The Americas, Don T. Deere

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Modernity is determined by a constitutive forgetting of space as it crafts linear temporal narratives of progress. The forgetting of space, I argue, also means the forgetting of the global and colonial nature of modernity. Modernity is actually carved out in the sixteenth century as a global-spatial process through the invention of the Americas as the New World and only later temporalized as progress, maturity, and development in the eighteenth century. My argument is developed by engaging in a comparative philosophical dialogue with texts from the Latin American, Caribbean, and 20th Century French traditions along with sixteenth-century Spanish theological, juridical, …

Tourism And Ethnicity In Insular Southeast Asia: Eating, Praying, Loving And Beyond, Kathleen M. Adams Jun 2016

Tourism And Ethnicity In Insular Southeast Asia: Eating, Praying, Loving And Beyond, Kathleen M. Adams

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The late 20th century landscape of tourism and ethnicity studies in insular Southeast Asia has tended to emphasize a set of dominant themes, including ethnic commoditization in tourism and tourist arts; the politics of touristic ethnicity; tourism and cultural development; and the performative dimension of inter- and intra-ethnic touristic encounters. How have these earlier research themes transformed in our current era of intensified neoliberalism, cyber-connectivity and mobility? This article draws from the title of the blockbuster 2010 film Eat Pray Love (partially set in Bali) to highlight several emergent 21st century themes that bear relevance for our understanding of the …

A Platform For Crowdsourcing The Creation Of Representative, Accurate Landcover Maps, Lyndon Estes, D. Mcritchie, J. Choi, S. Debats, T. Evans, W. Guthe, D. Luo, G. Ragazzo, R. Zempleni, K. K. Caylor Jun 2016

A Platform For Crowdsourcing The Creation Of Representative, Accurate Landcover Maps, Lyndon Estes, D. Mcritchie, J. Choi, S. Debats, T. Evans, W. Guthe, D. Luo, G. Ragazzo, R. Zempleni, K. K. Caylor

Geography

Accurate landcover maps are fundamental to understanding socio-economic and environmental patterns and processes, but existing datasets contain substantial errors. Crowdsourcing map creation may substantially improve accuracy, particularly for discrete cover types, but the quality and representativeness of crowdsourced data is hard to verify. We present an open-sourced platform, DIYlandcover, that serves representative samples of high resolution imagery to an online job market, where workers delineate individual landcover features of interest. Worker mapping skill is frequently assessed, providing estimates of overall map accuracy and a basis for performance-based payments. A trial of DIYlandcover showed that novice workers delineated South African cropland …

The Climate Of Opinion In Illinois 2008- 2016: Roots Of Gridlock, John Jackson, Charles W. Leonard, Shiloh L. Deitz Jun 2016

The Climate Of Opinion In Illinois 2008- 2016: Roots Of Gridlock, John Jackson, Charles W. Leonard, Shiloh L. Deitz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Since January 1, 2015, Illinois has been frozen in a governmental and political gridlock that has dominated the state’s political discourse, consumed the energies of all involved, and created chaos in governmental and non-profit agencies that normally deliver state services. It has also created untold hardship and suffering among those who are most dependent on state services. The conflict has especially threatened to drastically reduce the quality and missions of the institutions of public higher education in Illinois, a state system that was widely recognized as one of the best in the nation and the world.

Enhancing Foundation Capacity: The Role Of The Senior Leadership Team, Melissa A. Berman Jun 2016

Enhancing Foundation Capacity: The Role Of The Senior Leadership Team, Melissa A. Berman

The Foundation Review

This article examines the issue of foundation organization design and assesses how foundation leaders might think about their organizations as institutions.

Noting that any organization structure inhabited by human beings creates silos and territorial issues, foundation leaders are increasingly using two primary mechanisms to minimize these artificial barriers and maximize collaboration: enhanced headquarters functions to help integrate across the organization, and senior leadership teams.

This article reviews the structure, roles, responsibilities, and value-add of senior leadership teams at 19 foundations. The senior leadership team plays a crucial role in foundations, functioning as an advisory group to the president and chief …

Using Implementation Science To Translate Foundation Strategy, Allison Metz, Douglas Easterling Jun 2016

Using Implementation Science To Translate Foundation Strategy, Allison Metz, Douglas Easterling

The Foundation Review

New strategies sometimes require foundations to shift their staffing, organizational structures, administrative processes, and, possibly, their culture. The field of implementation science offers guidance to foundations as they effectively implement strategies that depart from prevailing practice.

This article focuses on two specific tools from implementation science: the practice profile and the Implementation Drivers Assessment. The practice profile answers the question, "What does the strategy require of particular foundation staff?" The implementation drivers analysis explores the broader question, "What does the strategy require in the way of organizational change within the foundation?”.

These two tools were used by the Kate B. …

The Role Of Bed Shear Stress In Sediment Sorting Patterns In A Reconstructed, Gravel Bed River, Samuel Emerson Jun 2016

The Role Of Bed Shear Stress In Sediment Sorting Patterns In A Reconstructed, Gravel Bed River, Samuel Emerson

Master's Theses

The role of bed shear stress in bed surface grain size sorting was investigated on a reconstructed reach of the Merced River in the Central Valley of California. Pebble count data were collected at the inside, middle, and outside of ten bends in April 2015 and compared to data from pebble counts conducted in previous years. Output from a previously developed 2D flow model (FaSTMECH) was compared to critical shear stresses calculated from median grain-size data. Comparison of pebble count results from 2002 through 2015 showed that there was no temporally consistent pattern of coarsening or fining along the study …

Competitiveness In A Multipolar Port System: Striving For Regional Gateway Status In Northeast Asia, S Kim, D Kang, J Dinwoodie Jun 2016

Competitiveness In A Multipolar Port System: Striving For Regional Gateway Status In Northeast Asia, S Kim, D Kang, J Dinwoodie

Plymouth Business School

The determinants of competitiveness between hub ports in the multipolar Northeast Asian system will decide which achieve regional gateway status. A survey instrument to assess 21 pertinent measurement items generated 203 responses from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Busan. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a valid and reliable competitiveness construct underpinning 19 measurement scales and a four-factor model incorporating availability, operational efficiency, port costs and service quality. Differences in factor importance revealed that success as a regional gateway port depends on whether port areas develop strategically into multi-functional business centres. The model offers a management tool to guide future port improvement.

The Role Of Customary International Water Law In Settling Water Disputes By Mediation: An Examination Of The Indus River And Renaissance Dam Disputes, Sayed Shaarawy Jun 2016

The Role Of Customary International Water Law In Settling Water Disputes By Mediation: An Examination Of The Indus River And Renaissance Dam Disputes, Sayed Shaarawy

Theses and Dissertations

Managing internationally shared rivers commonly lead to disputes among the states sharing the watercourse. In general, these disputes mostly relate to water allocation, equitable and reasonable utilization, and potential for harm. Scholars argue that all of the rules of Customary international water law contradict each other and are vague. According to their points of view, this law is not efficient in resolving these disputes. This paper tries to prove the efficiency of these rules in settling these disputes because they identify the different criteria used to manage internationally shared watercourses. This paper contends that these rules whether substantive or procedural …

“Love” Across The Strait: Cross-Border Marriage Between Chinese Women And Taiwanese Men, Paoyi Huang Jun 2016

“Love” Across The Strait: Cross-Border Marriage Between Chinese Women And Taiwanese Men, Paoyi Huang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While cases of cross-border marriage involving “foreign brides” from Southeast Asian countries have been well-documented in Taiwan, little has been known about Chinese women married to Taiwanese men because of cultural and ethnic proximity. Given the complicated historical and political conditions between Taiwan and China, however, Chinese female marriage migrants constitute a very distinct social group. This dissertation is a qualitative investigation of the emergence and expansion of cross-border marriage between Chinese women and Taiwanese men. Unlike previous scholars who focus on the exploitative nature of the so-called “mail-order bride” (MOB) phenomenon, or solely emphasize aspects of commodification in cross-border …

The University As A Site Of Socialisation For Sustainability Education, Jennie Winter, Debby Cotton, Paul Warwick Jun 2016

The University As A Site Of Socialisation For Sustainability Education, Jennie Winter, Debby Cotton, Paul Warwick

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This chapter reports on an innovative approach to in-service teacher education focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aimed at faculty in a UK university. Building on the underpinning philosophies that characterise sustainability education: participation, experiential learning and authenticity, a module on ESD was designed which at first flipped and then moved beyond the classroom. An online resource was developed to house the necessary declarative content which student-teachers accessed before the class. Class time was then spent within deliberative, dialogic and ‘walkabout’ learning spaces. These included a critically informed tour of the university campus and community exploring the ‘unseen university’, …

Competitiveness, Profitability, Input Demand And Output Supply Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Kazal, I Begum, M Alam Jun 2016

Competitiveness, Profitability, Input Demand And Output Supply Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Kazal, I Begum, M Alam

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The study assesses international competitiveness, profitability, output supply and input demand of maize production using a farm survey data of 165 farmers from two major maize growing areas (i.e., Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat districts) of northwestern Bangladesh. Results revealed that maize production is globally competitive and, therefore, can successfully substitute its import. Maize production is also profitable at the farm level (Benefit Cost Ratio = 1.21) with no adverse influence of farm size on yield and profitability. Maize farmers are also responsive to changes in market prices of inputs and outputs. A 1% increase in maize price will increase output supply …

Welcoming Immigrants: An Opportunity To Strengthen Rural Communities, Athena K. Ramos Jun 2016

Welcoming Immigrants: An Opportunity To Strengthen Rural Communities, Athena K. Ramos

Journal of Extension

Rural communities matter. Almost a quarter of the Midwest's population lives in rural communities, but emerging demographic patterns, including the increase of Latinos, are changing the landscapes of rural Midwestern communities. Often, the rise in the Latino population is the deciding factor between growth or decline for a rural community. This circumstance presents a unique opportunity for Extension professionals and communities to initiate best practices around community building and welcoming of newcomers, especially immigrants. We need to harness the strength of all rural residents to create vibrant, healthy, sustainable communities that are centers of creativity and innovation.

Trailblazer: The Legacy Of Bishop Henry M. Turner During The Civil War, Reconstruction, And Jim Crowism, Jordan Alexander Jun 2016

Trailblazer: The Legacy Of Bishop Henry M. Turner During The Civil War, Reconstruction, And Jim Crowism, Jordan Alexander

Masters Theses

Henry McNeal Turner (1834–1915), a black wartime chaplain, an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) pastor, and occasional Republican politician, was a beacon of hope for thousands of freedmen following the American Civil War. The late nineteenth century marked a watershed in civil rights in the United States. The Civil War (1861–1865) ushered in emancipation for black slaves, while Reconstruction (1865–1877) provided tremendous opportunities for freedmen, including black male suffrage, equal protection under the law, and election to public office. Of course, African–Americans faced serious challenges. Many white southerners resisted Reconstruction, and the Ku Klux Klan (and other hate groups) soon emerged …

Singapore's Vision Of A Smart Nation, See Liang Foo, Gary Pan Jun 2016

Singapore's Vision Of A Smart Nation, See Liang Foo, Gary Pan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

With a population of 5.4 million and land area of 718 square kilometres, 94 percent of Singapore’s population live in high-rise apartments, of which, 82 percent dwell in public housing. As an ultra-dense city-state, effective and innovative urban development is a social and economic imperative intricately intertwined with Singapore’s competitiveness and quality of life. Harnessing information and communications technology (ICT) is not only essential to achieving this, but also serves as a template for answering some of the global challenges faced by urban centres around the world–particularly in regard to economic development, social cohesion, better city administration and infrastructure management.

OES Faculty Publications

Continental shelves and shelf seas play a central role in the global carbon cycle. However, their importance with respect to trace element and isotope (TEI) inputs to ocean basins is less well understood. Here, we present major findings on shelf TEI biogeochemistry from the GEOTRACES programme as well as a proof of concept for a new method to estimate shelf TEI fluxes. The case studies focus on advances in our understanding of TEI cycling in the Arctic, transformations within a major river estuary (Amazon), shelf sediment micronutrient fluxes and basin-scale estimates of submarine groundwater discharge. The proposed shelf flux tracer …

Mūhndsīn; Explorations Of The Right To The City, Fatma Saber Jun 2016

Mūhndsīn; Explorations Of The Right To The City, Fatma Saber

Theses and Dissertations

With the majority of the world’s population living in cities, the urban has become a dynamic space where contemporary social relations, gender roles and subjectivities are being recreated. This thesis explores the nexus between the urban and the social spaces it creates, with a specific focus on Cairo. It adopts critical urban theory and the right to the city as theoretical approaches to understanding these dynamics by studying Mūhndsīn a district in the city which combines diverse forms of living and dwelling. The thesis reaches conclusions on the operationalization of the right to the city by focusing on three themes …

Palestinian Rights: A Literary Multiple-Genre Approach, Marwa Mahmoud Jun 2016

Palestinian Rights: A Literary Multiple-Genre Approach, Marwa Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

The year 1948 marked a turning point in the Palestinian history and a shift in the process of art production. Nakba constituted drastic changes on the political, social and demographic contexts of the Palestinians. That was necessarily followed by a similar alteration in the forms of expression adopted to articulate the new status quo of the land and its people. The artistry of the Palestinians emerged as surmounting the imposed limitations of Israeli occupation and opened up new spaces for freedom of expression denied to Palestinians. The fragmented Palestinians functioned creatively as they articulated their diverse experiences of displacement and …

Rural Health Inequities And The Role Of Cooperative Extension, Lauri Andress, Cindy Fitch Jun 2016

Rural Health Inequities And The Role Of Cooperative Extension, Lauri Andress, Cindy Fitch

Journal of Extension

Health inequities affect communities through adverse health outcomes, lost productivity, and increased health care costs. They arise from unequal distribution of social determinants of health—the conditions in which people are born and live. Health outcomes, tied to behaviors and health care, also are rooted in location and social status. Cooperative Extension provides culturally appropriate programs that touch the places where individuals and families live. A history of promoting democracy through education makes Extension uniquely positioned to address health inequities and foster greater equality among groups that experience hardships as a result of differences in social, economic, and environmental determinants of …

Rogues In The Postcolony: The New Picaresque And The Making Of Modern India, Stacey Balkan Jun 2016

Rogues In The Postcolony: The New Picaresque And The Making Of Modern India, Stacey Balkan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Rogues in the Postcolony looks at Indian picaresque novels that respond to and productively complicate dominant historical narratives by adapting formal conventions of the picaresque novel and by foregrounding the experiences of historically obscured figures, or “rogues.” The project is structured in such a way as to read colonial and postcolonial India through the lens of marginalized persons such as poppy farmers and, more recently, the citizens of Bhopal who continue to struggle with the toxic legacy of the Union Carbide fertilizer factory in their city. I argue that the unreliable narration and non-teleological structure of the picaresque form parody …

Dislocating Camps: On State Power, Queer Aesthetics & Asian/Americanist Critique, Christopher Alan Eng Jun 2016

Dislocating Camps: On State Power, Queer Aesthetics & Asian/Americanist Critique, Christopher Alan Eng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation argues that the history of Asian racialization in the United States requires us to grapple with the seemingly counterintuitive entanglement between “the camp” as exceptional space of biopolitical management and “camp” as a performative practice of queer excess. While each practice of camp has been theorized as exemplary of modernity, these considerations have been largely separated into studies of political economy on the one hand, and queer aesthetics on the other. Taken up predominantly in political philosophy and the social sciences, the former centers the death camps in Europe during World War II as epitomizing state violence within …

Animate Impossibilities: On Asian Americanist Critique, Racialization, And The Humanities, Frances H. Tran Jun 2016

Animate Impossibilities: On Asian Americanist Critique, Racialization, And The Humanities, Frances H. Tran

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation works from and through the field of Asian American studies, drawing on Asian Americanist cultural critique and minority discourse, to investigate the relationship among race, the politics of knowledge, and the epistemic function of the humanities. Proliferating discourses on “post-race” and “colorblindness” characterizing the present moment posit a progressive movement beyond racial division, towards recognizing and incorporating minority difference into the academy. However, even as issues like “diversity” have gained visibility as institutional objectives, I contend that this heightened visibility occludes the structural conditions that allow racialization to persist. In this project, I follow the work of thinkers …

Suburbs In Black And White: Race, Jobs & Poverty In Twentieth-Century Long Island, Tim Keogh Jun 2016

Suburbs In Black And White: Race, Jobs & Poverty In Twentieth-Century Long Island, Tim Keogh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Suburbs in Black and White” examines how economic development shaped African American suburbanization on Long Island, New York from 1920 through 1980. After 1940, the fortunes of Long Island’s growing black population shifted from widespread poverty to upward social mobility, though by the 1960s, a divide emerged between the rising black middle class and black working poor, and distinctly ‘black’ suburbs emerged with problems familiar to postwar inner cities. While urban racial inequality is often framed in terms of housing segregation and the city/suburb divide, census and labor market data reveal that structural economic change across the New York metropolitan …

Sociodemographic And Geospatial Correlates Of Stillbirths And Neonatal Mortality In Indonesia (1993–2007), Alka Dev Jun 2016

Sociodemographic And Geospatial Correlates Of Stillbirths And Neonatal Mortality In Indonesia (1993–2007), Alka Dev

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Little research has focused on the determinants of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Indonesia despite the fact that the country has one of the highest rates of stillbirths in the world and one of the highest rates of neonatal mortality in Asia. Several areas have not been explored due to data limitations, such as shared risk factors and measurement challenges, which can inform health policy and interventions and guide future research. This dissertation addresses this gap by comparing measurement challenges for stillbirth and neonatal mortality and identifying risk factors for both using Indonesian reproductive health survey data. Differences in estimates …
