In recent years, the global creative economy has experienced unprecedented growth. Considerable research has been conducted to determine what exactly the creative economy is, what occupations are grouped together as such, and how it is to be measured. Organizations on various scales, from the United Nations to local governments, have released ‘creative’ or ‘cultural’ economy reports, developed policies for creative urban renewal, and directed attention to creative placemaking – the purposeful infusion of creative activity into …
The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher
The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher
NULR Online
In this essay, Blocher considers recent developments that have given new hope to those seeking constitutional abolition of the death penalty. Some supporters of the death penalty continue to argue, as they have since Furman v. Georgia, that the death penalty is constitutional because the Fifth Amendment explicitly contemplates it. The appeal of this argument is obvious, but Blocher argues that its strength is largely superficial and also mostly irrelevant to the claims being made against the constitutionality of capital punishment. At most, the references to the death penalty in the Fifth Amendment may reflect a founding-era assumption that …

Intersystem Implications Of The Developmental Origins Of Health And Disease: Advancing Health Promotion In The 21st Century, Michael D. Barnes, Thomas L. Heaton, Michael C. Goates, Justin M. Packer
Faculty Publications
The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) theory and life course theory (LCT) are emerging fields of research that have significant implications for the public health and health promotion professions. Using a DOHaD/LCT perspective, social determinants of health (SDH) take on new critical meaning by which health promotion professionals can implement DOHaD/LCT guided interventions, including recommended policies. Through these interventions, public health could further address the sources of worldwide chronic disease epidemics and reduce such disease rates substantially if related policy, programs, and interdisciplinary and multi-sector collaboration are emphasized. Additional characteristics of the most effective interventions involve context-specific adaptation …

Schools adopted many different models of outdoor learning 4. Schools invested …
Frontier Capitalism: Early Arkansas Banking And Indian Removal, 1819-1860, Cody Lynn Berry
Frontier Capitalism: Early Arkansas Banking And Indian Removal, 1819-1860, Cody Lynn Berry
Theses and Dissertations
After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 by Congress, thousands of Native Americans were moved from their homelands in the Southeast to lands west of the Mississippi River. Along their long and difficult journey across the country, many white Americans profited from the process. After Arkansas was granted statehood on June 15, 1836, the General Assembly passed legislation that established the Arkansas State Bank and the Real Estate Bank of Arkansas. Between 1836 and 1843, these banks were run by men who utilized their positions at the bank and as agents for the Office of Indian Affairs, …

The coastal area has naturally attractive to population and industry due to its convenient geographical location and abundant resources. While the coastal area provides geographical advantages and resources for urban development, it also experiencing a dramatically growing vulnerability to natural hazards. For coastal mega-cities like Shanghai, typhoon storm surge presents a significant threat to both infrastructure and populations with relatively high vulnerability. Another fact about Shanghai coastal area is that the reclamation land has grown substantially due to the huge demand of land for further urban development. On the one hand, the reclamation land can alleviate the continuous growth of …

Reducing Marginalization Of Fishermen Through Participatory Action Research In The Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe, Bernard Manyena, Andrew E. Collins, Frank Mudimba, Danisa Mudimba
International Journal of African Development
Equitable sharing of fishing resources has been the major source of tension between Zambezi Valley communities and the Zimbabwe government authorities since the 1950s following the Kariba Dam-induced resettlement. Using participatory action research, it was found that the fishing license system and criminalization of fishermen were the major sources of tension between fishermen and government authorities. Engaging with government authorities to address these tensions, fishermen were recognized as partners in the fishing industry. The conclusion was that enhancing community agencies through participatory action research would be fundamental towards creating socially just and equitable arrangements that could emancipate marginalized communities from …

Modelling Forest Insect Outbreaks: Efforts Towards An Inverse Approach To Model Calibration, Liliana Perez, Roberto Molowny-Horas, Saeed Harati
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Modelling and simulation of epidemic insect outbreaks are powerful tools to be used in planning and preparing strategies for forest management under climate change. Calibration is a fundamental part of the modelling strategy. It aims to find those parameter values that allow the best characterization of emergent spatiotemporal dynamics within the system being modelled. In this study we implemented a cellular automata (CA) model to simulate the mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic in western Canada, which has killed about 50% of the total volume of commercial lodgepole pine in the province since 1990. We used spatial information on annual mortality …

Teacher Conceptions, Curriculum Ideologies, And Adaptations To Linear Change In River School District: Implications For Gifted And Talented, William T. Allen Jr., Scott L. Hunsaker
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
Curriculum ideologies are educational theories applied in everyday pedagogical practice. In this study, to better meet the learning needs of their students, four middle school teachers used a variety of ideologies as a professional toolbox. When confronted with school district standardization, these teachers adapted; however, as predicted by earlier studies, adjustments required the loss of previously successful curriculum. As predicted by Feldhusen, these losses affected teachers of high-level students (honors and gifted and talented) the most. In this district, two such teachers opposed standardization; nevertheless, even with resistance, they lost ideological-based curriculum choices. What are teachers of high-level students …

In Canada, Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are required to engage in evidence-based practice (EBP) as an entry to practice competency (CCNRN, 2012, CCPNR 2013). However, despite this expectation, and research findings that nurses generally have a positive attitude toward evidence-based practice (Yoder, Kirkley, McFall, Kirkey, StalBaum, & Sellers, 2014) globally there is poor uptake in the application of this process. Thiel and Ghosh (2008) conducted a cross-sectional survey of 121 practicing nurses in the Midwestern United States to determine how they accessed information and their readiness to engage in …

Modelling Socio-Ecological Problems With Delay. Case Study On Environmental Damage, Veronika Novotná, Bedřich Půža, Jiří Hřebíček
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper presents modelling complex socio-ecological problems, where relations among individual quantities vary in time. This includes dynamics of processes in the model, which enables to understand time as a continuous quantity and to describe dynamic processes by a system of differential equations with delay. Implementation of these models in Maple system enables both analytic and numerical solutions and their visualizations. The Maple solution of the specific example of the model with delayed argument is shown, where all input parameters can be interactively changed during the solution process, i.e. delay, interval of the solution, or other parameters which have an …

Modelling Dynamic Social-Ecological Systems: Towards An Integrated, Multiscale Approach, Terence P. Dawson, Lorenzo Milazzo, Gary Polhill
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Social-ecological systems (SES) consist of open, coupled, complex, interactive and non-linear dynamic processes that are inherently unpredictable. SES are a form of Complex Adaptive System (CAS) in which a dynamic network of many agents (which may represent species, people, organisations, nations, etc.) are acting independently and in parallel, constantly responding to their environment and what the other agents are doing. Hence, the causal drivers of SES behaviour tend to be highly dispersed and decentralized. An important characteristic of a CAS is that they can exhibit emergent behaviour and self-organisation, phenomena that cannot be predicted directly from the properties of their …

Ilmsweb - A Modular, Web-Based Software Platform For Integrated Environmental Modelling, Data Management And Decision Support, S. Kralisch, A. Künne, J. M. Santos, P. Selsam, C. Schwartze
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Integrated water resources management in river basins and related impact assessment of changing climate and landuse typically demand for the integration of a variety of software tools and methods. These often include data management and information systems, classification tools for deriving spatial input data from satellite or airborne imagery, GIS tools for pre-processing and integration of spatial information, hydrological simulation models and multi-criteria comparison methods. While there is a plethora of individual solutions and tools available that address these requirements, their seamless and user-friendly integration in decision support tools remains challenging. We are presenting ILMSweb, a modular, web-based software platform …

Using Machine Learning To Make The Most Out Of Free Data: A Deforestation Case Study, Helen Mayfield, Carl Smith, Marcus Gallagher, Lauren Coad, Marc Hockings
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Deforestation remains a major environmental issue and is studied for a range of reasons such as informing policy decisions, predicting at risk areas and evaluating interventions. Despite there being a range of machine learning (ML) techniques with a proven record in complicated, non-linear problems, many of these are rarely applied to deforestation analysis. We propose that this is partially due to uncertainty in the environmental services field regarding how these models perform compared to standard statistics. There is also a lack of guidance on which situations various models are suitable for. We compared the three ML techniques of artificial neural …
