Methodology To Predict Daily Groundwater Levels By The Implementation Of Machine Learning And Crop Models, Sandra Milena Guzman Gutierrez Aug 2016

Methodology To Predict Daily Groundwater Levels By The Implementation Of Machine Learning And Crop Models, Sandra Milena Guzman Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

The continuous decline of groundwater levels caused by variations in climatic conditions and crop water demands is an increased concern for the agricultural community. It is necessary to understand the factors that control these changes in groundwater levels so that we can better address declines and develop improved conservation practices that will lead to a more sustainable use of water. In this study, two machine learning techniques namely support vector regression (SVR) and the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) neural network were implemented to predict daily groundwater levels in a well located in the Mississippi Delta Region (MDR). Results …

Faster-X Evolution In The Speciation Of Heliconius Butterflies, Margarita Baquero Aug 2016

Faster-X Evolution In The Speciation Of Heliconius Butterflies, Margarita Baquero

Theses and Dissertations

The X and Z chromosomes have unique characteristics that lead to unique evolutionary consequences. Lepidopterans have a well-known, disproportionately large-Z effect for behavioral and morphological traits that distinguish closely related species. A potential explanation for the Large-X effect is the faster evolution of the sex chromosome (Faster-X evolution). We use whole genome re-sequencing of Heliconius erato races and of the incipient species H. himera to test for faster-Z evolution between hybridizing populations at different reproductive isolation levels, by calculating divergence and nucleotide diversity. We show evidence for Faster-Z evolution in Heliconius butterflies at the early stages of speciation and along …

Silicic Volcanism At The Northern And Western Extent Of The Columbia River Basalt Rhyolite Flare-Up: Rhyolites Of Buchanan Volcanic Complex And Dooley Mountain Volcanic Complex, Oregon, Adam M. Large Aug 2016

Silicic Volcanism At The Northern And Western Extent Of The Columbia River Basalt Rhyolite Flare-Up: Rhyolites Of Buchanan Volcanic Complex And Dooley Mountain Volcanic Complex, Oregon, Adam M. Large

Dissertations and Theses

Two mid-Miocene (16.5-15 Ma) rhyolite volcanic centers in eastern Oregon, the Buchanan rhyolite complex and Dooley Mountain rhyolite complex, were investigated to characterize eruptive units through field and laboratory analysis. Results of petrographic and geochemical analysis add to field observations to differentiate and discriminate the eruptive units. Additionally, new geochemical data are used to correlate stratigraphically younger and older basalt and ash-flow tuff units with regional eruptive units to constrain the eruptive periods with modern Ar-Ar age dates.

Previous work at the Buchanan rhyolite complex was limited to regional mapping (Piper et al., 1939; Greene et al., 1972) and brief …

Habitat Suitability Modeling For The Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus Canadensis Pulla, Linda C. Salande Aug 2016

Habitat Suitability Modeling For The Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus Canadensis Pulla, Linda C. Salande

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I modeled the suitability of habitat on the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge for the federally endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis pulla). Habitat type and suitability changed over time due to seasonality of vegetation and succession in the absence of burning. Cranes used highly suitable habitat more in the non-growing than in the growing season, and may have been more constrained by resource availability during winter months. Cranes used some less-suitable areas including cypress drains, which provide roosting sites, and supplemental food plots. The mismatch between predicted quality and crane use suggests that …

Coastal Louisiana: Adaptive Capacity In The Face Of Climate Change, Tara Lambeth Aug 2016

Coastal Louisiana: Adaptive Capacity In The Face Of Climate Change, Tara Lambeth

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Extreme weather events can result in natural disasters, and climate change can cause these weather events to occur more often and with more intensity. Because of social and physical vulnerabilities, climate change and extreme weather often affect coastal communities. As climate change continues to be a factor for many coastal communities, and environmental hazards and vulnerability continue to increase, the need for adaptation may become a reality for many communities. However, very few studies have been done on the effect climate change and mitigation measures implemented in response to climate change have on a community’s adaptive capacity.

This single instrumental …

Unprecedented Disease-Related Coral Mortality In Southeastern Florida, William F. Precht, Brooke Erin Gintert, Martha L. Robbart, Ryan Fura, Robert Van Woesik Aug 2016

Unprecedented Disease-Related Coral Mortality In Southeastern Florida, William F. Precht, Brooke Erin Gintert, Martha L. Robbart, Ryan Fura, Robert Van Woesik

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Anomalously high water temperatures, associated with climate change, are increasing the global prevalence of coral bleaching, coral diseases, and coral-mortality events. Coral bleaching and disease outbreaks are often inter-related phenomena, since many coral diseases are a consequence of opportunistic pathogens that further compromise thermally stressed colonies. Yet, most coral diseases have low prevalence (<5%), and are not considered contagious. By contrast, we document the impact of an extremely high-prevalence outbreak (61%) of white-plague disease at 14 sites off southeastern Florida. White-plague disease was observed near Virginia Key, Florida, in September 2014, and after 12 months had spread 100 km north and 30 km south. The disease outbreak directly followed a high temperature coral-bleaching event and affected at least 13 coral species. Eusmilia fastigiata, Meandrina meandrites, and Dichocoenia stokesi were the most heavily impacted coral species, and were reduced to <3% of their initial population densities. A number of other coral species, including Colpophyllia natans, Pseudodiploria strigosa, Diploria labyrinthiformis, and Orbicella annularis were reduced to <25% of their initial densities. The high prevalence of disease, the number of susceptible species, and the high mortality of corals affected suggests this disease outbreak is arguably one of the most lethal ever recorded on a contemporary coral reef.

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke Aug 2016

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Over the last three years, the Scientist in Residence program (a collaboration between the Department of Education and Child Development, and Flinders University) investigated a model of professional learning in science education that capitalised upon teachers’ moral purpose and drove their creativity. Insight into how teachers transformed their science classrooms is provided through examples of activities, work samples and clips of teachers describing how they changed their practice and how that, in turn, changed the engagement and achievement of the children. These resources will serve to illustrate some of the principles of practice that the teachers drew upon. In particular, …

Combustion, Catriona Sandilands Aug 2016

Combustion, Catriona Sandilands

The Goose

Match, wood, flame. Pyrocultures, settler colonial pyrophobia. Internal combustion. Wildfire. Petrocapitalist immolation. This short photo essay reflects on fire as simultaneously a sensuous phenomenon of everyday life and an entity that, because of both its presence and its absence in particular formations, makes worlds. To be aware, both corporeally and politically, of our involvement in pyric practices and regimes allows us to begin to imagine what it might mean to understand and change our relations to fire as part of a larger project of energetic transformation: bodily, socially, politically.

Rapid Surface Water Volume Estimations In Beaver Ponds, Daniel J. Karran, Cherie J. Westbrook, Joseph M. Wheaton, Carol A. Johnston, Angela Bedard-Haughn

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Beaver ponds are surface water features that are transient through space and time. Such qualities complicate the inclusion of beaver ponds in local and regional water balances, and in hydrological models, as reliable estimates of surface water storage are difficult to acquire without time and labour intensive topographic surveys. A simpler approach to overcome this challenge is needed, given the abundance of the beaver ponds in North America, Eurasia and southern South America. We investigated whether simple morphometric characteristics derived from readily available aerial imagery or quickly measured field attributes of beaver ponds can be used to approximate surface water …

How Graphic Novels Affect Reading Comprehension And Memory Recall Of Story Elements For Language Learners, Stephen Jerome Meuer Aug 2016

How Graphic Novels Affect Reading Comprehension And Memory Recall Of Story Elements For Language Learners, Stephen Jerome Meuer

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

English Language Learners can experience a range of issues in regards to reading and comprehending text due to their language interference, and therefore require an arsenal of tools, scaffolds, and differentiation to be employed by EL and content teachers alike. A possible tool includes graphic novels, as both a visual aid and literary text, in terms of reading comprehension and memory recall of the plot elements read. My research attempted to measure differences between scores on student written retells of each chapter of a class novel read, with some chapters being independently read by the student in the traditional novel …

Finding Empathy In Historical Inquiry And Data Management Through An Educational Research Example, Bo Chang Aug 2016

Finding Empathy In Historical Inquiry And Data Management Through An Educational Research Example, Bo Chang

The Qualitative Report

In historical inquiry, researchers identify the research questions, specify the domain which relates to the research questions, and familiarize themselves with how the documents are structured and managed in the host library. In collecting data, researchers don’t need to constrain themselves with how documents are labeled by the archivists. They can break the boundaries of the labeled documents and find out how seemingly unrelated documents are actually inter-related. In analyzing data, positivists and constructionists view history differently, which results in different approaches to how historical data can be analyzed. Positivists believe in transparency and universal truths across the historical data …

How Can Obstacles To Adult English Language Learners With Low Levels Of English Proficiency Participating In Distance Learning Be Reduced?, Anne Elizabeth Fern Ryan

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this project was: How can obstacles to adult ELLs with low levels of English language proficiency participating in distance learning be reduced? Focus groups were conducted with Vietnamese and Somali students to examine their experiences with distance learning. Students spoke of issues of access, difficulty of navigation, and literacy level of online learning content as major frustrations. Translation of computer instruction and increased opportunities to receive computer instruction were among the suggestions students offered for improving distance learning. The student suggestions would be costly for ABE programs to fully implement. Possible avenues for future study …

Using Dmas As A Marketing Tool: 2015 Nonresident Visitor Data, Jacob Daniel Jorgenson, Norma P. Nickerson

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

The purpose of this analysis was to extract zip code data from the 2015 nonresident visitor survey and compare the Designated Marketing Areas (DMA) represented to the 2010 nonresident visitor DMA for similarities and differences. Results indicate more similarities than differences in vacationer residencies, but some markets rose further up in ranking such as Spokane and Portland while Salt Lake City dropped in its visitor ranking. At the local CVB level, more differences between the two years emerged for Big Sky, Billings, Butte, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Whitefish.
