Use Of Water Indices Derived From Landsat Oli Imagery And Gis To Estimate The Hydrologic Connectivity Of Wetlands In The Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, Debra Sue Blackmore Aug 2016

Use Of Water Indices Derived From Landsat Oli Imagery And Gis To Estimate The Hydrologic Connectivity Of Wetlands In The Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, Debra Sue Blackmore

Dissertations and Theses

This study compared two remote sensing water indices: the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and the Modified NDWI (MNDWI). Both indices were calculated using publically-available data from the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). The research goal was to determine whether the indices are effective in locating open water and measuring surface soil moisture. To demonstrate the application of water indices, analysis was conducted for freshwater wetlands in the Tualatin River Basin in northwestern Oregon to estimate hydrologic connectivity and hydrological permanence between these wetlands and nearby water bodies. Remote sensing techniques have been used to study wetlands in recent …

Implementasi Pembelajaran Kuliah Kerja Lapangan Dalam Meningkatkan Minat Belajar Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Geografi Universitas Negeri Malang, Dicky Arinta, Sugeng Utaya, I Komang Astina

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

Teaching geography intrinsically learners develop the ability to recognize and understand natural phenomena in relation to spatial and territorial. When learning georafi sometimes students feel tired and lazy to learn the theory because it is considered a difficult and elusive to participate in Field Work Lecture (KKL). Field Work Lecture serves to apply theory in the classroom to the field that would affect the learning achievement and learning effectiveness. This study discusses the implementation of the Field Work Lecture at the University of Malang, especially in Geography Education to improve student interest in learning. The method used is a qualitative …

Extracting Palaeoflood Data From Coarse-Grained Pleistocene River Terrace Archives: An Example From Se Spain, Anne Mather, Martin Stokes Aug 2016

Extracting Palaeoflood Data From Coarse-Grained Pleistocene River Terrace Archives: An Example From Se Spain, Anne Mather, Martin Stokes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Field based palaeoflood event reconstruction has the potential to contribute to the development of our understanding of longterm landscape evolution. However the reconstruction of past flow event histories (magnitude and frequency) over long-term (Quaternary) timescales is fraught with difficulties. Here we make a preliminary exploration of some of the practicalities of flood reconstruction from fluvial terrace archives using commonly available sedimentological and geomorphological observations from a field perspective. We utilize Manning and palaeostage indicators to reconstruct historic events that can be used as benchmarks for a lesser used competence based approach (Clarke 1996), which is applied to coarse-grained strath terrace …

Scientific approach-based learning which is currently on going can be implemented if it is supported by the learning components arranged based on Curriculum 2013, one of them is learning material such as students’ book. Most of the students’ books which are distributed and used by most of the senior high school students are not based on the scientific approach, so a further study is needed to be conducted. The study on this book was conducted to analyze whether the materials of the book have represented the steps of the scientific approach or not. This research belongs to the content analysis. …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The presence of a di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipid biomarker (diene II) in Southern Ocean sediments has previously been proposed as a proxy measure of palaeo Antarctic sea ice. Here we show that a source of diene II is the sympagic diatom Berkeleya adeliensis Medlin. Furthermore, the propensity for B. adeliensis to flourish in platelet ice is reflected by an offshore downward gradient in diene II concentration in >100 surface sediments from Antarctic coastal and near-coastal environments. Since platelet ice formation is strongly associated with super-cooled freshwater inflow, we further hypothesize that sedimentary diene II provides a potentially sensitive …

Educator Responses To Migrant Children In Mexican Schools, Juan Sánchez Garcia, Edmund T. Hamann Aug 2016

Educator Responses To Migrant Children In Mexican Schools, Juan Sánchez Garcia, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

A decade-long, five-state, mixed-method study of students encountered in Mexican schools with previous experience in the United States suggests there may be 400,000 such students in educación básica alone (elementary and middle school). The focus here, however, are data from 68 educators asked how they have responded to such students and their families. We offer an emergent taxonomy of teacher sensemaking about these students and teachers’ responsibilities to respond. We then assert that because they are at the interface between a national institution (school) and transnational phenomena (migration), educators can provide key insight into how migration is shaped and negotiated. …

Classifying The Colleges Of The Forgotten Americans: A Geographically-Based Classification Of Public Master's Colleges And Universities, J Clint Kinkead, Stephen G. Katsinas

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

In his first address to a Joint Session of Congress in February 2009, President Barack Obama committed the nation to dramatically expanding adult baccalaureate degree attainment among US adults, which had fallen from first to eighth among developed nations around the world: That is why, at the start of my administration I set a goal for America: by 2020, this nation will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world….Today, I am announcing the most significant down payment yet on reaching this goal in the next ten years. It’s called the American Graduation Initiative. It will …

The methods used to predict future legislation was a comparative examination of the history of the legislation politically and socially within the United States. The historical trends of the legislation were compared with global trends as well as current societal factors that may influence legislation. The results will indicate that societal factors such as global influence, social media and the Baby Boom generation will have a dramatic affect in the rapid increase in Death with …

The Preservation Of Identity: A Narrative Examination Of National Parks In Kentucky, Abigail Ponder Aug 2016

The Preservation Of Identity: A Narrative Examination Of National Parks In Kentucky, Abigail Ponder

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

National parks are symbols of national identity. They tell the history of places—personal legacies and natural phenomena. My Capstone Experience/Thesis (CE/T) project for the Honors College at WKU features two stories that fuse fiction and non-fiction conventions to share the experiences of national parks in Kentucky. Currently, the National Park Service is celebrating its centennial anniversary at parks across the nation. First established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, the national parks have become symbols of the quintessential American experience: serving as memorials to nature, to history, and to culture. As such, these stories that take place at Mammoth Cave …
