Geographical Indications And Development In The Third World: Towards A Strategic Approach Of Intellectual Property Rights In Jamaica - The Case Of Blue Mountain Coffee, Marsha Simone Cadogan Sep 2016

Geographical Indications And Development In The Third World: Towards A Strategic Approach Of Intellectual Property Rights In Jamaica - The Case Of Blue Mountain Coffee, Marsha Simone Cadogan

PhD Dissertations

The dissertation is a critical analysis of, and engagement with agricultural and food based geographical indications, the politics of development and international relations, and the prospects of forming reformist linkages between geographical indications and development in Jamaica and the Caribbeans intellectual property landscape. A net importer of intellectual property, Jamaica has yet to fully claim intellectual property as its own.

The dissertation proposes that geographical indication schemes should be envisaged, and practically function as part of Jamaicas development policy. This approach calls for a reformist approach to intellectual property in Jamaica, which includes an awareness of the pitfalls of being …

Balancing Versus Bandwagoning : The Strategic Dilemma Of Australia’S China Policy, Man Kwong Yeung Sep 2016

Balancing Versus Bandwagoning : The Strategic Dilemma Of Australia’S China Policy, Man Kwong Yeung

Lingnan Theses

Recent research on power shift, or the change in relative power of states in an international structure, has focused on how states adapt to strategic difficulties. As a key change in international politics, scholars have long discussed how states react strategically to power shift. One school in international studies, neorealism, emphasizes the prime importance of security affairs over other strategic concerns in an anarchic international structure. It explores states’ dilemma in choosing between balancing a more powerful state or bandwagoning with it. While this approach sheds important insights on the study of international politics, the parsimony of neorealism suffers from …

Determination Of Rare Earth Elements In Natural Water Samples – A Review Of Sample Separation, Preconcentration And Direct Methodologies, Andrew Fisher, Derya Kara Sep 2016

Determination Of Rare Earth Elements In Natural Water Samples – A Review Of Sample Separation, Preconcentration And Direct Methodologies, Andrew Fisher, Derya Kara

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This review discusses and compares the methods given for the determination of rare earth elements (REE) in natural water samples, including sea, river, lake, tap, ground and waste waters as well as Antarctic ice. Since REE are at very low concentrations in natural waters, numerous different preconcentration methods have been proposed to enable their measurement. These include liquid liquid extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid micro-extraction and solidified floating drop micro-extraction. In addition to liquid-liquid extraction methods, solid phase extraction using commercial resins, resins made in-house, silica-based exchange materials and other solid media is also discussed. These and other techniques such as precipitation/co-precipitation …

Identifying Association Between Pedestrian Safety Interventions And Street Crossing Behavior Considering Demographics And Traffic Context, Franklin J. Caraballo Sep 2016

Identifying Association Between Pedestrian Safety Interventions And Street Crossing Behavior Considering Demographics And Traffic Context, Franklin J. Caraballo

Master's Theses

Pedestrian fatalities are becoming a larger percentage of overall fatalities in the United States, therefore pedestrian safety research is essential for understanding and improving pedestrian safety. Pedestrian safety interventions are often used to educate and consequently improve pedestrian behavior. This study used pedestrian safety interventions to assess their effect on the respondents’ stated crossing behavior. Also, specific demographic data was used in this study to identify behavioral trends regarding street crossing behavior. The results show that pedestrian safety interventions are significantly associated with changes in pedestrian crossing behavior. The effect of the interventions was predominantly positive, since the respondents’ behavior …

On Becoming Citizens Of The 'Non-Existent': Violence, Document-Production And Syrian War-Time Migration In Abkhazia, Jihad Abaza Sep 2016

On Becoming Citizens Of The 'Non-Existent': Violence, Document-Production And Syrian War-Time Migration In Abkhazia, Jihad Abaza

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I look at the ways in which statehood comes to be defined, practiced, and performed through Syrian war-time migrants’ “repatriation” in Abkhazia, a small breakaway self-proclaimed state squeezed between Russia and Georgia.1I argue that while separatist states’ desires and aspirations towards statehood grant legitimacy to the modern nation-state system, they at once expose the fragility of its very order. An unrecognized state like Abkhazia still maneuvers within the system that it is locked out of, but the way that Abkhazia, like other unrecognized states, is shunned from the ‘family of nations’ could reveal how constructed and hallucinatory …

Nutrition And Helicobacter Pylori: Host Diet And Nutritional Immunity Influence Bacterial Virulence And Disease Outcome, Kathryn P. Haley, Jennifer A. Gaddy Sep 2016

Nutrition And Helicobacter Pylori: Host Diet And Nutritional Immunity Influence Bacterial Virulence And Disease Outcome, Kathryn P. Haley, Jennifer A. Gaddy

Peer Reviewed Articles

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the stomachs of greater than 50% of the world’s human population making it arguably one of the most successful bacterial pathogens. Chronic H. pylori colonization results in gastritis in nearly all patients; however in a subset of people, persistent infection with H. pylori is associated with an increased risk for more severe disease outcomes including B-cell lymphoma of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) and invasive adenocarcinoma. Research aimed at elucidating determinants that mediate disease progression has revealed genetic differences in both humans and H. pylori which increase the risk for developing gastric cancer. Furthermore, host diet and …

Quantifying The Toxicity Of 1-Methylnaphthalene To The Shallow-Water Coral, Porites Divaricata, For Use In The Target Lipid Model, Nicholas Turner Sep 2016

Quantifying The Toxicity Of 1-Methylnaphthalene To The Shallow-Water Coral, Porites Divaricata, For Use In The Target Lipid Model, Nicholas Turner

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The proximity of coral reefs to coastal urban areas and shipping lanes predisposes corals to petroleum pollution from multiple sources. Previous research has evaluated petroleum toxicity to coral using a variety of methodologies, including monitoring effects of acute and chronic spills, in situ exposures, and ex situ exposures with both adult and larval stage corals. Variability in toxicant, bioassay conditions, species and other methodological disparities among studies prevents comprehensive conclusions regarding the toxicity of hydrocarbons to corals. This research evaluated the 48-hour toxicity of 1-methylnaphthalene to Porites divaricata using a continuous-flow passive dosing system. The range-finding exposure evaluated the dosing …

Illinois Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Advanced Placement® And Dual Credit Courses, Glenn A. Wood Sep 2016

Illinois Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Advanced Placement® And Dual Credit Courses, Glenn A. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Advanced Placement® and dual credit coursework have been associated with positive educational attainment outcomes for students and yet opportunity gaps exist for children to access these programs depending on the school they attend. The many benefits of Advanced Placement® and dual credit coursework for students make it necessary that any education agenda by policymakers should include avenues to increase access to these programs for students. This study explored Advanced Placement® and dual credit coursework in Illinois through the perceptions of teachers, principals, superintendents, and school board members using a cross-sectional survey. The survey was administered to examine whether there are …

Playing With The History Of Middle Earth: Board Games, Transmedia Storytelling, And The Lord Of The Rings, Adam Brown, Deb Waterhouse-Watson Sep 2016

Playing With The History Of Middle Earth: Board Games, Transmedia Storytelling, And The Lord Of The Rings, Adam Brown, Deb Waterhouse-Watson

Journal of Tolkien Research

Contemporary cases of transmedia storytelling have thrown many conventional understandings of ‘adaptation’ into disarray. The resurgence of tabletop game culture has thus far played a significant role in this, though scholars have largely neglected the subject, particularly in terms of how transmedia relationships reconfigure the meaning(s) shaped by and through games by players. This paper addresses this phenomenon through a close analysis of two board games based on The Lord of the Rings, in which the (re)construction of the story-world of the source text(s) impacts strongly on ‘conventional’ modes of narrative and identification. Governed by the adoption of various …

Civil-Military Relations And The African Standby Forces' Multidimensionism, Francis Onditi, Pontian G. Okoth Sep 2016

Civil-Military Relations And The African Standby Forces' Multidimensionism, Francis Onditi, Pontian G. Okoth

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The feasibility of a multidimensional African Standby Force (ASF) and the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC) is uncertain. This is despite the existence of a policy framework initiating the ASF and regional mechanisms (RMs). The policy was adopted and adapted to assume a multidimensional configuration, in May 2003 and in 2004 respectively. More than ten years after its establishment, there exist an unconcluded debate on whether the ASF and the regional mechanisms have achieved the multidimensional status-military, civilians and police components. It is in this sense that reference to civil-military relations (CMRs) has become almost a cliché …

Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were Sep 2016

Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The management of Lake Victoria as a “regional common” is expected to adhere to the global principles of transboundary natural resource management. However, national interest and power asymmetry amongst riparian states buoyed by external demand have overwhelmed global and regional norms leading to incessant exploitation of the common resources. This paper uses idealist and realist perspectives of power relations to inform the analysis of conflicting interests in transboundary natural resource exploitation. It partly relies on 2012-2013 primary data from purposively selected Beach Management Units in Kenya and Uganda and secondary data from regional fisheries institutions. Notwithstanding the normative value of …

Tradeable Permits For Shoreline Protection: Reshaping Regulation Under The Coastal Act For The Era Of Sea Level Rise, Charles Colgan, Sarah Newkirk

Publications

California’s coast is one of the state’s and the nation’s premier locations. Home to millions of people, as well as a great diversity of natural features and habitats, it is also a place that is disappearing from beneath our feet. The dynamic interactions of water and land have eroded much of the historic California coast, and sea level rise threatens a dramatic acceleration of this trend. Fighting erosion has led to more than ten percent of California’s shoreline (and over thirty percent in southern California) being transformed from natural to man-made structures that resist, at least for a time, the …

Northeast Ocean Planning Baseline Assessment: Marine Resources, Infrastructure, And Economics, Hauke Kite-Powell, Charles Colgan, Porter Hoagland, Di Jin, Vinton Valentine, Brooke Wikgren

Publications

This document summarizes the status of coastal and marine resources in the Northeast region of the United States, and how these resources generate economic and ecological value. The Northeast region, for ocean planning purposes, includes the coastal counties of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and the New York counties (bordering Long Island Sound) of Queens, Bronx, Suffolk, Nassau, and Westchester. The coastal and marine natural resources and coastal infrastructure of the Northeast, and the economic activities and cultural/recreational services that rely them, directly and indirectly support more than 500,000 jobs and $40 billion in economic value (GDP) …

Understanding Stakeholder Preferences For Flood Adaptation Alternatives With Natural Capital Implications, Jonathon R. Loos, Shannon H. Rogers Sep 2016

Understanding Stakeholder Preferences For Flood Adaptation Alternatives With Natural Capital Implications, Jonathon R. Loos, Shannon H. Rogers

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Inland flood risks are defined by a range of environmental and social factors, including land use and floodplain management. Shifting patterns of storm intensity and precipitation, attributed to climate change, are exacerbating flood risk in regions across North America. Strategies for adapting to growing flood risks and climate change must account for a community’s specific vulnerabilities, and its local economic, environmental, and social conditions. Through a stakeholder-engaged methodology, we designed an interactive decision exercise to enable stakeholders to evaluate alternatives for addressing specific community flood vulnerabilities. We used a multicriteria framework to understand what drives stakeholder preferences for flood mitigation …

Outpatient Antibiotic Prescribing Among United States Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants., Guillermo V Sanchez, Adam L Hersh, Daniel J Shapiro, James F. Cawley, Lauri A Hicks

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

We examined US nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) outpatient antibiotic prescribing. Antibiotics were more frequently prescribed during visits involving NP/PA visits compared with physician-only visits, including overall visits (17% vs 12%, P < .0001) and acute respiratory infection visits (61% vs 54%, P < .001). Antibiotic stewardship interventions should target NPs and PAs.
