Communities Of Opportunity: Pursuing A Housing Policy Agenda To Achieve Equity And Opportunity In The Face Of Post-Recession Challenges, Kalima Rose, Teddy Kỳ-Nam Miller
Communities Of Opportunity: Pursuing A Housing Policy Agenda To Achieve Equity And Opportunity In The Face Of Post-Recession Challenges, Kalima Rose, Teddy Kỳ-Nam Miller
Trotter Review
Where we live directly impacts our ability to achieve our full potential. Access to good schools, quality jobs, reliable transportation, and healthy food is fundamental to achieving communities of opportunity. Unfortunately, communities of color, and urban black communities in particular, are disproportionately residing in neighborhoods locked out of opportunity, or disproportionately burdened by housing costs —spending over half of their income on housing. In 2015, PolicyLink undertook a research project to understand the changing post-recession housing landscape, to characterize the forces that were undermining housing security for communities of color, and to characterize the policy opportunities that could address the …
The Politics Of Race, Class, And Gentrification In The Atl, Keith Jennings
The Politics Of Race, Class, And Gentrification In The Atl, Keith Jennings
Trotter Review
Methodologically, the essay uses a multidisciplinary approach to examine gentrification from a race, class, and gender perspective. Within the essay a number of the dynamics directly associated with Atlanta’s political economy and the impact those dynamics are having on issues such as affordable housing, poverty, and Black employment and underemployment are analyzed. While not a central focus of the essay, the changes taking place outside of Atlanta in several counties, as a result of the push and pull effect in the metropolitan region, are briefly discussed.
From Disinvestment To Displacement: Gentrification And Jamaica Plain’S Hyde-Jackson Squares, Jen Douglas
From Disinvestment To Displacement: Gentrification And Jamaica Plain’S Hyde-Jackson Squares, Jen Douglas
Trotter Review
In this essay, I offer a place-based history of socioeconomic and demographic change in Hyde Square and nearby Jackson Square (henceforth “Hyde-Jackson Squares”). I document the area’s ongoing gentrification and describe the distribution of gentrification pressures. I situate this contemporary process against the socio-spatial patterns carved out by the area’s historical rise as an industrial suburb, its struggle amid decades of disinvestment, and the community efforts that ultimately stabilized the neighborhood. In these sequential transformations is the story of how Latinos and Blacks entered, departed, and have strived to remain in the neighborhood.

Recruiting Hispanic Students By Two Year Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Strategies Used And Their Effectiveness, Dalia Tejada
Student Theses and Dissertations
There were two purposes of this study. The first was to identify commonly practiced strategies for the recruitment of Hispanic undergraduate students utilized by two-year private and public Hispanic Serving Institutions. The second was to evaluate the previously identified recruiting strategies perceived by admission recruiters to be the most effective for the recruitment of Hispanic undergraduate students used by two-year Hispanic Serving Institutions. Fifty-eight Hispanic Serving Institutions completed an online survey questionnaire relating to the demographic questions, non-activity recruiting strategies, passive recruiting strategies, active recruiting strategies, and open-ended suggestions. Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied to …

Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Home-based edible gardening is defined as individual households growing food on their own property. In the Global North, home-based edible gardens have recently been identified as an important part of urban sustainability initiatives, given the relatively large area of residential yard space available for food production in most cities. Yet basic questions around households’ decisions to participate in home-based edible gardening have not been fully examined, making the likelihood of meeting home-based gardens’ potential unclear. This study explores the motivations and barriers associated with home-based edible gardening through in-depth interviews with growers and non-growers. The study area is four neighborhoods …
Integrating Ecosystem Services Into Urban Park Planning & Design, Dorothy C. Ibes
Integrating Ecosystem Services Into Urban Park Planning & Design, Dorothy C. Ibes
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Urban parks, which include a variety of green, brown, and gray infrastructure (e.g. greenways, native desert parks, plazas), are key providers of ecosystem services within cities. Given the importance of urban ecosystem services to the social and ecological health of urban ecosystems, there is a growing consensus that ecosystem service considerations should be integrated into urban park planning, policy, and design. Yet this integration is limited by a lack of relevant, accessible tools and standards for implementation. To address these deficiencies the present study developed the Urban Park Ecosystem Services (UPES) tool. UPES an open-source, geographically contextualized planning tool and …

Under Pressure: Cetaceans And Fisheries Co-Occurrence Off The Coasts Of Ghana And Côte D’Ivoire (Gulf Of Guinea), Marijke N. De Boer, James T. Saulino, Koen Van Waerebeek, Geert Aarts
Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection
Within the Gulf of Guinea high levels of fisheries-related cetacean mortality (bycatch and direct-capture) has been documented. For locally rare species such removals could potentially lead to significant population level effects. However, information on the cetacean abundance and distribution is scarce. Similarly, it remains largely unreported where fishing fleets operate offshore. A cetacean survey took place during geophysical surveys (2013–2014) along the coasts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. This provided a unique opportunity to study both offshore cetacean and fishing communities. Due to large group-sizes, melon-headed whales were the most abundant (0.34 animals km−1) followed by Fraser’s dolphins and short-finned …
Empowering Energy Justice, Mary Finley-Brook, Erica L. Holloman
Empowering Energy Justice, Mary Finley-Brook, Erica L. Holloman
Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications
The U.S. is experiencing unprecedented movement away from coal and, to a lesser degree, oil. Burdened low-income communities and people of color could experience health benefits from reductions in air and water pollution, yet these same groups could suffer harm if transitions lack broad public input or if policies prioritize elite or corporate interests. This paper highlights how U.S. energy transitions build from, and contribute to, environmental injustices. Energy justice requires not only ending disproportionate harm, it also entails involvement in the design of solutions and fair distribution of benefits, such as green jobs and clean air. To what extent …

Effectiveness Of Arkansas Community Colleges' (Acc) Leadership Institute (Li) In Competency Development, Angela Dawn Caldwell
Student Theses and Dissertations
The pending retirements of community college leaders across the United States has been projected in the literature by numerous researchers. In 2008, Arkansas began to offer the Leadership Institute (LI) to develop future leaders for the community colleges in the state. This grow-your-own leader program was developed with input from current community college leaders as well as the Competencies for Community College Leaders, published by The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). This study investigated the effectiveness of the LI on the perceived development of the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, (2013). The study also assessed the perceived impact …

T Bone Burnett, The American South, And The Ethic Of A Contemporary Cultural Renaissance, Heath J. Carpenter
Student Theses and Dissertations
With the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, T Bone Burnett spent his cultural capital on repurposing traditional American music in subsequently successful soundtracks and artistic productions, providing a spark for a 21st century cultural movement that moves beyond music. This study aims to position Burnett has a cultural catalyst by grounding his work, and those abiding by a similar ethic, in the American South. In the process, I examine what Burnett’s soundtracks and select artistic productions communicate about contemporary Southern cultures and identities, while negotiating the ever-enigmatic generational issues of identity and authenticity. By extending the …

Tri-Variate Relationships Among Vegetation, Soil, And Topography Along Gradients Of Fluvial Biogeomorphic Succession, Daehyun Kim, John A. Kupfer
Geography Faculty Publications
This research investigated how the strength of vegetation–soil–topography couplings varied along a gradient of biogeomorphic succession in two distinct fluvial systems: a forested river floodplain and a coastal salt marsh creek. The strength of couplings was quantified as tri-variance, which was calculated by correlating three singular axes, one each extracted using three-block partial least squares from vegetation, soil, and topography data blocks. Within each system, tri-variance was examined at low-, mid-, and high-elevation sites, which represented early-, intermediate-, and late-successional phases, respectively, and corresponded to differences in ongoing disturbance frequency and intensity. Both systems exhibited clearly increasing tri-variance from …

Mary’S House In Ephesus, Turkey: Interfaith Pilgrimage In The Age Of Mass Tourism, Amelia Gallagher Ph.D.
Mary’S House In Ephesus, Turkey: Interfaith Pilgrimage In The Age Of Mass Tourism, Amelia Gallagher Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
The local Christian community had long held the Turkish site known today as Mary’s House (Meryem Ana Evi) to be the historical Mary’s last residence and final resting place. However, it was not until the Vincentians conducted an archeological study of the first century ruins in 1891 that it became known to the Church. Amelia Gallagher recounts the circumstances surrounding the “discovery” of Mary’s House. She traces the location’s trajectory from a Catholic shrine to one that is sacred to Catholics, other Christians, and Muslims, particularly for pilgrims seeking healing from the springs there. She explains differences in Christian and …

Affect And Value In Critical Examinations Of The Production And ‘Prosumption’ Of Big Data, Daniel G. Cockayne
Affect And Value In Critical Examinations Of The Production And ‘Prosumption’ Of Big Data, Daniel G. Cockayne
Geography Faculty Publications
In this paper I explore the relationship between the production and the value of Big Data. In particular I examine the concept of social media ‘prosumption’—which has predominantly been theorized from a Marxist, political economic perspective—to consider what other forms of value Big Data have, imbricated with their often speculative economic value. I take the example of social media firms in their early stages of operation to suggest that, since these firms do not necessarily generate revenue, data collected through user contributions do not always realize economic value, at least in a Marxist sense, and that, in addition to their …
