Systems Of Access: A Multidisciplinary Strategy For Assessing The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability, Christopher Wolsko, Elizabeth Marino, Thomas J. Doherty, Steve Fisher, Amanda S. Green, Briana Goodwin, Ryan Reese, Andrea Wirth

Library Faculty Research

The concept of access to natural resources has been a specific concern of economists and ecologists and is a distinct component in recent models of social sustainability. Using a series of conceptual and empirical examples, this article extends the notion of access broadly to social institutions and sociocultural norms. We argue that access may be usefully construed as an analytic tool that has direct applicability to many sustainability issues as it allows for cross-disciplinary and public engagement. Here the concept of access, linked to Amartya Sen’s theory of capabilities, also makes visible the multi-scaled and interconnected social processes that influence …

Energy Dashboard For Real-Time Evaluation Of A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal System, David Allen Lotz Apr 2016

Energy Dashboard For Real-Time Evaluation Of A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal System, David Allen Lotz

Open Access Theses

The emergence of net-zero energy buildings, buildings that generate at least as much energy as they consume, has lead to greater use of renewable energy sources such as solar thermal energy. One example is a heat pump assisted solar thermal system, which uses solar thermal collectors with an electrical heat pump backup to supply space heating and domestic hot water. The complexity of such a system can be somewhat problematic for monitoring and maintaining a high level of performance. Therefore, an energy dashboard was developed to provide comprehensive and user friendly performance metrics for a solar heat pump system. Once …

Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram Apr 2016

Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram

Publications

Geography supports place-based inquiry for the learner, applying the old environmental adage of “think globally, act locally” to environmental problem solving. Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Yet despite a history of human-environment education, place-based relevancy, and support from professional research or education organizations, studies show that geography does not always take a lead role in sustainability education. In the following, we revisit the contested histories of geography and sustainability education and show support for geography-led sustainability curriculum. The scope of this research is universities which have …

Bio-Accumulation Of A Soil Fungicide In Western Barred Tiger Salamanders Via Earthworm Prey, Reece Allen Apr 2016

Bio-Accumulation Of A Soil Fungicide In Western Barred Tiger Salamanders Via Earthworm Prey, Reece Allen

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Western Tiger Salamander in eastern Nebraska have experienced population declines in recent years. In eastern Nebraska there is a high degree of agricultural production compared to other regions of the state. Pyraclostrobin fungicide, a substance that has been shown to cause numerous deleterious effects to amphibian species via direct contact, is applied to cornfields in large amounts. While a number of experiments have been conducted showing the effects of pyraclostrobin via dermal contact in amphibians, little is known about the effects of fungicide bioaccumulation. In this study, 24 salamanders were split into 4 groups with each group ingesting earthworms which …

The Measure Of Nematode Diversity In Response To Varying Management Practices And Features In Restored And Remnant Prairie Ecosystems, Heaven Hulshizer Apr 2016

The Measure Of Nematode Diversity In Response To Varying Management Practices And Features In Restored And Remnant Prairie Ecosystems, Heaven Hulshizer

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

A defining moment in American history involved the movement of immigrants across the land looking for space to make a living on and manifest destiny. The Great Plains provided more than enough of this space, and the tallgrass plains making up the eastern part of Nebraska was no exception to this, providing good climate and soils to accommodate bountiful crops. Looking at them now, the loss of tallgrass prairie has been immense. Restoration efforts for the tallgrass prairie have increased, yet it is still a conservation effort needing more analysis and understanding. Evaluation criteria for restored prairies is an important …

Environmental Exposure And Biophilic Influence On Prosocial Sentiments, Justin Mueller Apr 2016

Environmental Exposure And Biophilic Influence On Prosocial Sentiments, Justin Mueller

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Scientific consensus states human civilization has had a profoundly negative effect on the environment, especially in the last two centuries. In addition to this, there an increasing concern for the psychological well-being of many members of our society. There is a theory known as biophilia that states humans have a natural affinity for things that are alive and in nature. Exposure to the environment has numerous benefits, including psychological, physiological, spiritual, and ethical improvements. This paper is a theoretical approach studying a potential positive relationship between the triggering of biophilia and prosocial behaviors. It is hypothesized that the existence of …

The Effect Of Soil Ph On The Integument Of The Western Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Mavortium), Aaron Devine Apr 2016

The Effect Of Soil Ph On The Integument Of The Western Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Mavortium), Aaron Devine

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This study was done in an effort to better understand the multifaceted issues in amphibian decline, specifically within the eastern regions of Nebraska, to determine whether or not human-induced acid rain contributed to the decline. This is a heavily important topic of research as amphibians worldwide are declining related to many issues that stem from climate change and several other environmental issues of that nature. This study looked to use acidic pH within soil from western Nebraska to determine the reactionary impacts (primarily lesions) the western tiger salamander had after being subjected to it. It was found that pH did …

Studying The Effect Of Urbanization On Tree Growth Surrounding Streams In Lincoln, Nebraska, Benjamin Heusinkvelt Apr 2016

Studying The Effect Of Urbanization On Tree Growth Surrounding Streams In Lincoln, Nebraska, Benjamin Heusinkvelt

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Urban forests are important to many functions of not only the city itself but also the citizens that live there. They provide carbon storage, shade, invaluable erosion control and can act as barriers to flash floods. This thesis was completed inside the municipality of Lincoln, Nebraska and at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. Its purpose was to determine the effect urbanization has on tree growth in specific areas, in this case alongside stream banks. Data was collected from two test sites and analyzed to determine any differences. The results indicate that urban environments affect many characteristics of trees. This comparative …

Social Media & Political Engagement: Environmental Organizations, Social Media And Political Engagement, Tyler Cate Apr 2016

Social Media & Political Engagement: Environmental Organizations, Social Media And Political Engagement, Tyler Cate

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Social media is becoming more important in today’s digital society, but how effective is the use of social media when it comes to political engagement? How do environmental organizations use social media and is it effective in encouraging their “followers” to engage in online and/or offline political activity? I collected Facebook and Twitter data from ten environmental organizations to assess the effectiveness of each posting. I hypothesize that the groups making direct calls for action via social media receive a greater response – beyond “clicktivism” or “slacktivism” – than the groups that do not. The data includes the number of …

Inquiry Into The Implementation Of Bush’S Executive Order 13211 And The Impact On Environmental And Public Health Regulation, Elizabeth Ann Glass Geltman, Gunwant Gill, Miriam Jovanovic

Publications and Research

Executive Order 13211, promulgated in 2001, requires the federal government to consider the impact of federal action on energy independence as part of the George W. Bush’s National Energy Policy. This law review examines whether EO 13211 was used to curtail environmental protection and natural resource conservation. The article begins with a review of the procedure required of federal agencies under EO 13211 and its associated documents. The paper then examines case law and published federal rulemaking proceedings and examines how federal agencies apply tests to evaluate the potential energy effect. The study concludes that EO 13211 strikes a reasonable …

Escaping The Concrete Jungle: An Exploration Of Ecotourism Development In Dzongu, North Sikkim, Katrina Kniss

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The state of Sikkim in northeastern India is a place imbued with a sense of mystery. It is partially this spirit, as well as its pristine Himalayan landscapes and vibrant cultural diversity, that has established Sikkim as a major tourist destination in the region. In the Northern district of the state, the Dzongu reserve is inhabited by the indigenous Lepcha group, who hold the status of “Most Primitive Tribe”. Over the past decade, however, this primitive tribe has shown their strength in staging large-scale protests and hunger strikes in a movement against mega-hydropower development along the Teesta River. Employing their …

They Come Like The Clouds: Governing The Mountainous Periphery, Jared Sousa Apr 2016

They Come Like The Clouds: Governing The Mountainous Periphery, Jared Sousa

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper addresses the extension of governmental power into the mountainous periphery of the village of Dho Tarap in the Dolpa District of Nepal. New technologies, new markets, and new social dynamics are penetrating the Himalaya and reshaping the connections that mountain people have to the outside world. In this context of connectivity and modernity, the people of Dho Tarap are also being thrust into far closer proximity to the Nepali government. After a series of geopolitical moves in Nepal and China in the 1960s, Dho Tarap as part of an isolated border region has been a part of a …

The Annapurna Circuit has oft been called one of the best treks in the world. Its popularity has brought countless trekkers to the region, resulting in a strong local dependence on tourism. In recent years, plan to develop rural regions of Nepal have resulted in extensive road networks being built along the route of the circuit. These roads have helped some locals and hurt others. This study investigates the implementation of the roads in Annapurna Conservation Area and the effects on both trekkers and locals. Further, it examines the New Alternative Trekking Trails that have been implemented along sections of …

Kompa As A Lesson In Value Or A Semi-Voyeristic Appreciation Of The Bamboo Basket In Dolpa, Maxwell Shaw-Jones Apr 2016

Kompa As A Lesson In Value Or A Semi-Voyeristic Appreciation Of The Bamboo Basket In Dolpa, Maxwell Shaw-Jones

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This “study” explores two central topics: 1.) The logistics and details of basket weaving as both a skill and a business in Dolpa and 2.) The cultural value of the woven bamboo basket, also in Dolpa. My fieldwork started in lower Dolpa, (Dunai and Bysagar), peregrinated north into the Tarap Valley, and then returned back down to Dunai. From my research I attempt to provide an insight into the way people, of all walks of life in Dolpa, think and relate to this tool (kompa), and then attempt to derive larger moral implications from what I have observed. …
