Since amphibian declines were first proposed as a global phenomenon over a quarter century ago, the conservation community has made little progress in halting or reversing these trends. The early search for a “smoking gun” was replaced with the expectation that declines are caused by multiple drivers. While field observations and experiments have identified factors leading to increased local extinction risk, evidence for effects of these drivers is lacking at large spatial scales. Here, we use observations of 389 time-series of 83 species and complexes from 61 study areas across North America to test the effects of 4 of the …

Infiltrating Green Into The Urban Machine: Creating Equity Through Zero-Acreage Farms In Nyc, Hania Hribal-Kornilowicz May 2016

Infiltrating Green Into The Urban Machine: Creating Equity Through Zero-Acreage Farms In Nyc, Hania Hribal-Kornilowicz

Student Theses 2015-Present

Urban centers have long been areas characterized by teeming activity, innovation, and idealized opportunity. However, without fail every urban center contains the paradox between abundance and injustice as evidenced by high rates of food insecurity, lack of green space, and the compounding health disparities experienced by predominantly low-income and minority residents. These injustices will only worsen as the impacts of climate change accelerate. In response, this thesis uses New York City as a case study to explore the efficacy of ZFarming, which is farming in and on buildings, for creating more equitable and sustainable cities. This is accomplished by establishing …

Policy Options To Mitigate Cigarette Filter Litter In California, Max Wechsler May 2016

Policy Options To Mitigate Cigarette Filter Litter In California, Max Wechsler

Master's Projects and Capstones

Approximately 16.2 billion cellulose acetate cigarette filters are littered in California annually. Cigarette filter litter (CFL) creates an annual financial burden of over $1.27 billion for California. CFL also poses unquantifiable damages to human and environmental health in the form of ingestion, toxicity, formation into microplastics, and quality of life degradation. These costs and damages warrant the adoption of policy measures in order to mitigate CFL. Cigarette taxes and fees raise government revenue, but they are politically challenging due to California Proposition 26. Locational smoking bans encourage anti-smoking cultural norms and may decrease consumption, although indoor smoking bans may increase …

Mining Pm2.5 And Traffic Conditions For Air Quality, Xu Du, Aparna S. Varde May 2016

Mining Pm2.5 And Traffic Conditions For Air Quality, Xu Du, Aparna S. Varde

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fine particle pollution is related to road traffic conditions. In this work, we analyze Particulate Matter with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometers, calledPM2.5, along with traffic conditions. This is done for multicity data to study the relationships in the context of environmental modeling. The goal behind this modeling is to support prediction of PM2.5 concentration and resulting air quality. We deploy data mining algorithms in association rules, clustering and classification to discover knowledge from the concerned data sets. The results are used to develop a prototype tool for the prediction of PM2.5 and hence air quality for public health …

What Is The Economic Feasibility Of Implementing Grey Water Infrastructure At The Citywide Level?, Natalie J. Munoz May 2016

What Is The Economic Feasibility Of Implementing Grey Water Infrastructure At The Citywide Level?, Natalie J. Munoz

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

This paper examines the challenges and economic feasibility of implementing grey water recycling systems at a citywide scale. Past and present conditions of fresh water scarcity are discussed, and how scarcity will be exacerbated by climate change. Previous technological developments and initiatives are discussed, and how they are implemented to reduce fresh water scarcity. Challenges, examples and costs of implementing grey water systems are detailed; in general results indicate that large projects (such as apartment complexes and multistory buildings) are only economically feasible (as opposed to single-family homes), decentralized (on-site) systems also appear to be more economically feasible due …

Conoco Inc. V. United States: A Narrowing Of The Sovereign Acts Doctrine, Mary Katherin Roe May 2016

Conoco Inc. V. United States: A Narrowing Of The Sovereign Acts Doctrine, Mary Katherin Roe

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

In Conoco Inc. v. United States, the United States Court of Federal Claims held that the federal government breached oil and gas lease contracts it entered into for the offshore areas of North Carolina by taking actions as required by the Outer Banks Protection Act of 1990 (OBPA). In an attempt to shield itself from liability for this breach of oil lease contracts, the federal government unsuccessfully attempted to use the sovereign acts doctrine. This Note will present the legal background of the Conoco case and will discuss the sovereign acts doctrine as it relates to the court's eventual holding. …

Fishermen's Dock Coop., Inc. V. Brown: Judicial Review Of Optimum Yield Determinations, Philip L. Curcio

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (Magnuson Act or Act) was enacted by Congress to conserve U.S. coastal fishery resources and to maximize the economic and social utility of those resources for U.S. citizens. The Act has a fisheries management goal of providing the "optimum yield" of all managed species, a concept which is based on the statistically derived quantity of "maximum sustainable yield" as modified "by any relevant economic, social, or ecological factor." The mandatory consideration of these three factors, coupled with the inherent uncertainty of fish stock assessment techniques, effectively places broad discretionary power in the …

Marathon Oil Co. V. United States: The Rising Costs Of Domestic Oil Production, M. Jean Mcdevitt

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953 (OCSLA) was enacted by Congress to establish exclusive federal jurisdiction over submerged lands on the continental shelf beyond three miles from the coastline. Pursuant to the OCSLA, the Secretary of the Interior is authorized to sell oil and gas leases on outer continental shelf (OCS) lands through a competitive bidding process. The Act was amended in 1978 to provide for the "expeditious and orderly development, subject to environmental safeguards," of resources on the OCS "consistent with the maintenance of competition and other national needs." Lessees must seek approvals from various federal and …

Ocean Planning And The Gulf Of Maine: Exploring Bi-National Policy Options, Lucia Fanning, Rita Heimes

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

Over the twenty-five years since a special Chamber of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its decision in the Delimitation of the Maritime Boundary in the Gulf of Maine Area (Gulf of Maine Case), legal scholars have written extensively on the significance of the ruling to influence Canada-U.S. relations specifically, and international arbitration in general.2 While the rationale behind any particular scholar’s interest in the case has varied over the years, its significance in informing deliberation surrounding maritime boundary delimitation owes much to the fact that the case presented many “firsts.” Among these were: the use of a special …

Harnessing The Ocean's Power: Opportunities In Renewable Ocean Energy Resources, Todd J. Griset May 2016

Harnessing The Ocean's Power: Opportunities In Renewable Ocean Energy Resources, Todd J. Griset

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 brought a renewed focus on finding the least environmentally harmful and most cost-effective solutions to our society’s energy needs. Seventy-one percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by its oceans. In the last century, much attention has been focused on submarine hydrocarbon deposits, such as the extensive natural gas and oil reserves situated under the outer continental shelf (OCS). “The OCS is a significant source of oil and gas for the Nation’s energy supply,” with leases for 43 million acres of the OCS providing 15 percent of America’s domestic natural gas production and …

Shortcomings And Solutions: Reforming The Outer Continental Shelf Oil And Gas Framework In The Wake Of The Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Andrew Hartsig

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

On April 20, 2010, an explosion rocked the BP Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion and resulting fire killed eleven crew members, seriously injured sixteen others, and eventually sank the rig. The explosion also marked the beginning of the “world’s largest accidental release of oil into marine waters.” By the time BP effectively stopped the flow of oil on July 15, its Macondo well had discharged approximately 4.9 million barrels of oil. The Deepwater Horizon disaster was a human and environmental tragedy, and it may take years to assess the full scope of the …

The Arctic is a sentinel of global change. This region is influenced by multiple physical and socio-economic drivers and feedbacks, impacting both the natural and human environment. Air pollution is one such driver that impacts Arctic climate change, ecosystems and health but significant uncertainties still surround quantification of these effects. Arctic air pollution includes harmful trace gases (e.g. tropospheric ozone) and particles (e.g. black carbon, sulphate) and toxic substances (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) that can be transported to the Arctic from emission sources located far outside the region, or emitted within the Arctic from activities including shipping, power production, and …

Deepwater Liquefied Natural Gas Ports And The Shifting U.S. Liquefied Natural Gas Market, Sean T. Dixon May 2016

Deepwater Liquefied Natural Gas Ports And The Shifting U.S. Liquefied Natural Gas Market, Sean T. Dixon

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The United States has been historically at the “end of the pipeline” for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and regular imports are needed in some regions to augment seasonal shortages in supply. Because the United States has become a more significant producer of natural gas (highest in the world), regional markets here tend to no longer rely on LNG cargoes for gas supply. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), “LNG imports to the United States were generally not viewed as competitive with domestic supplies of natural gas and pipeline imports from Canada through the 1980s and 1990s.” In the early …

From Empty Lot To Garden Plot: Urban Agriculture In Chula Vista, Jennifer E. Gutierrez May 2016

From Empty Lot To Garden Plot: Urban Agriculture In Chula Vista, Jennifer E. Gutierrez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project is an exploration of how agriculture can be incorporated into the fabric of the city of Chula Vista, which has both uniquely urban and suburban areas. The proposal is to integrate agriculture as a design tool to reconnect to the city’s agricultural past and as a model for cities of the future. First, I discuss Chula Vista’s history and contemporary context, including demographics. I review the existing urban agriculture policies Chula Vista has and compare them to other cities in California. The second part of the project is concerned with how to choose and develop a site for …

Arctic Circulation Pathways, Heat And Freshwater Fluxes: Results From Numerical Model Integrations, Jonathan David Whitefield May 2016

Arctic Circulation Pathways, Heat And Freshwater Fluxes: Results From Numerical Model Integrations, Jonathan David Whitefield

Marine Biology

With increasing attention on Arctic warming and consequent reductions of sea ice, many studies are focusing on the “gateways” to the Arctic Ocean - the regions where water enters and exits the Arctic Basin. The Chukchi Sea is the only pathway for Pacific water to enter the Arctic Ocean. While the Chukchi naturally undergoes large seasonal and interannual variability, currently it is also undergoing larger and rapid changes, which include transition to a longer icefree season. Numerical models are often used to explore this region, due to observational restrictions associated with sea-ice. Most past and current models tend to represent …

Controlling What Is Wild: The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act And Ecoterrorism, Thomas J. Levendosky

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis examines the extremist side of the environmental activism commonly known as ecoterrorism, and the subsequent implications of categorizing criminal activism as terrorism. Groups such as Earth First!, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), and the Environmental Liberation Front (ELF) strive to protect the natural world from the detrimental impacts of industrialization. Activists affiliated with these groups endorse direct action against environmentally harmful enterprises. Extremists are motivated by the belief that they are on the frontline defending the defenseless. They hope to dissuade corporations and government agencies from exploiting the natural world by exposing unethical practices and causing economic damage. …

Dari Kyoto Protocol 1997 Ke Paris Agreement 2015 : Dinamika Diplomasi Perubahan Iklim Global Dan Asean Menuju 2020, Andreas Pramudianto

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Periode Komitmen ke-II Protokol Kyoto 1997 diperpanjang hingga 2020. Sementara itu pengganti protokol ini …

Laying The Foundation For Effective Natural Resource Management, Teresa Scanlon

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The following portfolio describes three distinct, yet not mutually exclusive, approaches for managing water and other resources. A common theme throughout the three approaches is that they “lay the foundation” for future management, and each piece depicts a different approach to natural resource management planning. Part One is the final report for a research and planning contract for Lolo Watershed Group. Watershed science and restoration field techniques are used to inform and develop a scope of work document for Montana Department of Environmental Quality for a future revegetation restoration project on Lolo Creek. Part Two describes some of the co-facilitation …
