Constructing Authentic And Meaningful Steam Experiences Through University, School, And Community Partnerships, Sarah B. Bush, Kristin L. Cook
Constructing Authentic And Meaningful Steam Experiences Through University, School, And Community Partnerships, Sarah B. Bush, Kristin L. Cook
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
The aim of this article is to provide a model, an example, and suggestions for establishing and fostering meaningful partnerships to construct authentic and relevant STEAM learning experiences for preservice teachers. In order to prepare elementary preservice teachers to implement the Next Generation Science Standards alongside the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in ways that are situated in relevant contexts and involve students in authentic inquiry-based problem solving, it is essential that PSTs actually experience modeled points of integration in their teacher preparation programs. It is our hope that this article inspires other teacher educators to develop partnerships with …

Removal Of Copper (Ii) From Aqueous Solutions Using Cuttlebone As Bio-Adsorbent, Pathompong Vibhatabandhu, Sarawut Srithongouthai
Applied Environmental Research
Biosorptionis an effective process for removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In the present study, batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of copper (Cu II) from aqueous solutions using cuttlebone powder (<100 µm)as a bio-adsorbent. The effects of initial pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, and contact time on adsorption efficiency and capacity were studied to evaluate the optimum conditions for copper removal. The results found optimal conditions at initial pH of 5.0, 10 g L-1cuttlebone, 500 mg L-1initial concentration of Cu II in solution, and 150 min of equilibrium time. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model were fitted to the experimental adsorption data. The maxi-mum adsorption capacity calculated from theLangmuir isotherm was 54.05 mg g-1. This result shows that cuttlebone is an effective bio-adsorbent, constituting a promising, efficient, low-cost, and eco-friendly technology bio-sorbent for reducing copper pollution during wastewater treatment.

Isotope Evidence Of Rainfall And Groundwater For Tracing Recharge Areas In Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province, Thailand, Wanlapa Wisittammasri, Srilert Chotpantarat
Applied Environmental Research
This study was conducted in the districts of Kaeng Khoi and Muang, located in the center of Saraburiprovince, Central Thailand. The purpose was to use a stable isotope technique to iden-tify recharge areas where rainfall infiltrates. Analysis of stable isotopes in groundwater, surface water and rainwater were conducted in September 2014. Isotope compositions of groundwater were found to have dD values that ranged from -37.55‰ to -48.04‰ while d18O values ranged from -5.30‰ to -7.34‰. The Local Meteoric Water Line (LMWL) in the study area was indis-tinguishablefrom the Bangkok Local Meteoric Water Line (BKK LMWL), and the stable iso-tope values …

Application Of Wood Vinegar For Fungal Disease Controls In Paddy Rice, Wilawan Chuaboon, Nattapone Ponghirantanachoke, Dusit Athinuwat
Applied Environmental Research
A survey of an outbreak of fungal diseases of rice variety Phitsanulok2 (PLS91014-16-1-5-1) was conducted in Thailand during June 2014 to January 2015 using aW-random sampling pat-tern. The study revealed the incidence of several diseases including brown spot (Bipolaris oryzae), narrow brown leaf streak (Cercospora oryzae), and dirty panicle (Alternaria padwickii, C. oryzae, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum, and B. oryzae). This study evaluated the ef-ficacy of wood vinegar for control of these fungal diseases. A compleel randomized design was used, using the above variety in 3 replications. In the laboratory we found wood vinegar to be effective in inhibiting growth …

Trends In Mobile Transit Information Utilization: An Exploratory Analysis Of Transit App In New York City, Niloofar Ghahramani, Candace Brakewood
Journal of Public Transportation
Smartphone applications that provide transit information are now very popular. However, there is limited research that examines when and where passengers use mobile transit information. The objective of this research was to perform an exploratory analysis of the use of a smartphone application known as Transit App, which provides real-time transit information and trip planning (schedule) functionality. Backend data from Transit App were examined by time of day and day of week in the New York City metropolitan area. The results show that the pattern of both the trip planning feature and overall real-time information usage follow the typical pattern …

Genetic Amplification: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Its Problems And Uses, Drew Mcwilliams
Genetic Amplification: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Its Problems And Uses, Drew Mcwilliams
Honors Projects
Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), also called real-time PCR, has become a cornerstone of DNA analysis, enabling detection of minute amounts of nucleic acids (Whittwer et. al, 1997). In 1983, Kary Mullis developed a new method of genetic amplification—the polymerase chain reaction [PCR] (Bartlett & Stirling, 2003). A little over 20 years later, PCR now is a common and often crucial technique used in medical and biological research laboratories for a variety of applications. Some of these applications include DNA cloning for sequencing, DNA-based phylogeny, the diagnosis of hereditary diseases, the identification of genetic fingerprints (used in forensic sciences and …

Academic Department Indicators 2015-2016, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness
Program Review
The audience is the Academic Planning Council (APC), college and department heads, and faculty. The purpose is to report instructional productivity measures useful for making comparisons and observing trends. Selected departmental information in this report is submitted annually to the Delaware Study, a National Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity.
This Instructional Productivity information corresponds to the UNO state- and tuition-funded budget. The Supplemental Information at the end of the document provides counts and statistics for campuswide programs embedded in most colleges. Only Dual Enrollment instruction is excluded from the productivity report since it is a fee-based instructional program for …

Commentary: Are National Parks Still Relevant?, Randall K. Wilson
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
On the occasion of the National Parks centennial comes an irreverent question: Are the parks still relevant?
Famously christened as America's "best idea" by writer Wallace Stegner and reaffirmed in Ken Burns' 2009 PBS documentary, it seems brazen, if not blasphemous, to pose the question. [excerpt]

Un Environment Guide For Energy Efficiency And Renewable Energy Laws, Richard L. Ottinger
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This Guide is written as a sequel to the 2007 UN Environment Programme Handbook for Legal Draftsmen on Environmentally Sound Management of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Resources.
This Guide, as the Handbook, is written in response to needs expressed, particularly by energy efficiency and renewable energy project initiators, government officials, energy managers, project developers and particularly developing country energy legal draftsmen, asking for assistance in drafting legislative provisions for promotion and implementation of sound energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
The Guide describes the key legal issues associated with efficiency and renewable energy resource development, and presents legislative options …

How can the divide between science and the humanities be bridged? This article describes a series of collaborative art projects initiated by the science librarian at the College of the Holy Cross, who worked with faculty from Visual Arts and Creative Writing. Participating faculty were eager to help design opportunities that would highlight student work as well as form alliances with the libraries. These collaborations were innovative in that they brought together two academic worlds which don’t always have opportunities to mix with each other, generated other projects that drew non-traditional users into the science library, and, most significantly, enabled …
