E‐Book Tune‐Up: Maintaining, Sustaining, And Expanding Your Demand‐Driven E‐Book Program, Caroline Mills, Janet A. Nazar, Michelle R. Desilets, Nathan Carlson
Charleston Library Conference
Just like a car, an e‐book program needs continuous maintenance in order to run smoothly. What can we do to structure our e‐book collections to better meet institutional need? Many factors come into play in building a successful demand‐driven acquisition (DDA) program. Student preferences, actual use, collection development, and faculty/staff education and support are all important aspects of maintaining and sustaining a DDA program. This paper describes how the Furman University Library in South Carolina and the Metropolitan State University Library (Metro State) in Minnesota assessed and fine‐tuned their respective DDA programs, and the results of these changes.

‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee
‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee
Articles & Book Chapters
Ecological citizens are increasingly encouraged to adopt ‘precautionary consumption’ – a set of practices aimed at shielding them from the potential health harms of exposures to everyday toxics. The utility and the effects of precautionary consumption in relation to common chemical exposures are investigated. Precautionary consumption is not only of questionable utility, but is fundamentally misguided as an approach for inspiring antitoxics organizing. The failure of this approach is in part due to its assumption of a naturally bounded, autonomous individual who is able to maintain an impermeable boundary between herself and the environment. Drawing on the work of material …

Come Hell Or High Water? Scientific Progress And Ethics, Travis Pickell
Come Hell Or High Water? Scientific Progress And Ethics, Travis Pickell
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
There is a perception among some today that science is necessarily equated with progress because it is dedicated to advancing knowledge; but ethics is mostly about applying abstract ideals to questions whose answers should be clear to most people, and mostly just results leads to red tape and process-driven institutional review boards. If anything, for people who hold this view, the real purpose of “ethics” seems to be to impede science, progress and human flourishing.

Hearing In The Juvenile Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas): A Comparison Of Underwater And Aerial Hearing Using Auditory Evoked Potentials, Wendy Dow Piniak, David A. Mann, Craig A. Harms, T. Todd Jones, Scott A. Eckert
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Sea turtles spend much of their life in aquatic environments, but critical portions of their life cycle, such as nesting and hatching, occur in terrestrial environments, suggesting that it may be important for them to detect sounds in both air and water. In this study we compared underwater and aerial hearing sensitivities in five juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) by measuring auditory evoked potential responses to tone pip stimuli. Green sea turtles detected acoustic stimuli in both media, responding to underwater stimuli between 50 and 1600 Hz and aerial stimuli between 50 and 800 Hz, with maximum …

Storm Event Analysis At Nested Watershed Scales: Turkey Creek, Santee Experimental Forest, South Carolina, Austin Morrison, Timothy J. Callahan, Devendra M. Amatya, Vijay M. Vulava, J. Wesley Burnett
S.C. Water Resources Conference
Coastal areas are expected to see the greatest impact on water resources due to population increase and land development affecting the regional water budget by reducing evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge/discharge, and increase runoff. This project inspected forested watersheds in coastal South Carolina to understand their stream response to storm events. The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the watershed conditions based on their land use/land cover, soil drainage class, and topography, (2) compare streamflow patterns using seasonal event hydrographs, and (3) compare results of analytical method of storm event hydrograph separation with that of the chemical method using stable …
A Multiple Method Approach To Evaluate Landward Migration Of Seawater Intrusion In The Floridian Aquifer, Mikala Randich, Tim Callahan, Brooke Czwartacki
A Multiple Method Approach To Evaluate Landward Migration Of Seawater Intrusion In The Floridian Aquifer, Mikala Randich, Tim Callahan, Brooke Czwartacki
S.C. Water Resources Conference
The Floridan aquifer of the Southeastern United States is an important freshwater resource for private and commercial groundwater users. Within the past few decades, certain parts of the aquifer have experienced saltwater intrusion, which has affected the viability of this critical freshwater resource. Groundwater withdrawals, variability in recharge and discharge rates, and sea level rise has caused saltwater to advance into this and other freshwater coastal aquifers. While the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR) monitors conductivity in several coastal Floridan aquifer wells, a comprehensive hydrochemical saltwater intrusion study of the aquifer in the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester tri-county region of …

Where Is The North Pole? An Election-Year Survey On Global Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Where Is The North Pole? An Election-Year Survey On Global Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Carsey Publications
To explore public knowledge and perceptions about climate change, University of New Hampshire researchers conducted the first Polar, Environment, and Science (POLES) survey in August 2016. A random sample of U.S. adults were asked for their views regarding science, climate change, sources of information, current problems, and possible solutions. In addition, the survey tested basic geographical knowledge related to polar regions, such as whether the United States has a significant population living in the Arctic, and what respondents know about the location of the North Pole.
In this brief, author Lawrence Hamilton reports that fewer than one in five Americans …

Research has led to broad agreement among scientists that anthropogenic climate change is happening now and likely to worsen. In contrast to scientific agreement, US public views remain deeply divided, largely along ideological lines. Science communication has been neutralised in some arenas by intense counter-messaging, but as adverse climate impacts become manifest they might intervene more persuasively in local perceptions. We look for evidence of this occurring with regard to realities and perceptions of flooding in the northeastern US state of New Hampshire. Although precipitation and flood damage have increased, with ample news coverage, most residents do not see a …
