How Mature Capitalism Turns Pollution Into Diamonds: Malagnogenesis And The Reverse-Engineering Of Harm Into Risk, Kevin P. Martyn Oct 2016

How Mature Capitalism Turns Pollution Into Diamonds: Malagnogenesis And The Reverse-Engineering Of Harm Into Risk, Kevin P. Martyn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there has been a great deal of debate about the pervasiveness and persistence of neoliberal thinking. In the context of the post-2008 ‘great recession’ the resilience of neoliberalism is particularly confounding. To begin to unravel the ways in which neoliberalism is situated relative to risk, this study identifies an increasingly important neoliberal knowledge practice: malagnogenesis. Malagnogenesis is proposed herein as the production of ignorance that normalizes harm for and amongst marginalized populations. To shed light on the phenomena of malagnogenesis, this study investigated the history of leaded gasoline in the U.S. To that end, I …

Agenda: Flpma Turns 40, University Of Colorado Boulder. Getches-Wilkinson Center For Natural Resources, Energy, And The Environment

FLPMA Turns 40 (October 21)

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers approximately 245 million acres of our public lands and yet, for most of our nation's history, these lands seemed largely destined to end up in private hands. Even when the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934 ushered in an important era of better managing public grazing districts and "promoting the highest use of the public lands," such use of our public lands still was plainly considered temporary, "pending its final disposal." It was not until 1976 with the passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) that congress adopted a policy that …

‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee Oct 2016

‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee

Articles & Book Chapters

Ecological citizens are increasingly encouraged to adopt ‘precautionary consumption’ – a set of practices aimed at shielding them from the potential health harms of exposures to everyday toxics. The utility and the effects of precautionary consumption in relation to common chemical exposures are investigated. Precautionary consumption is not only of questionable utility, but is fundamentally misguided as an approach for inspiring antitoxics organizing. The failure of this approach is in part due to its assumption of a naturally bounded, autonomous individual who is able to maintain an impermeable boundary between herself and the environment. Drawing on the work of material …

Soft Energy Paths Revisited: Politics And Practice In Energy Technology Transitions, Chelsea Schelly, Aparajita Banerjee Oct 2016

Soft Energy Paths Revisited: Politics And Practice In Energy Technology Transitions, Chelsea Schelly, Aparajita Banerjee

Department of Social Sciences Publications

This paper argues that current efforts to study and advocate for a change in energy technologies to reduce their climate and other environmental impacts often ignore the political, social, and bodily implications of energy technology choices. Framing renewable energy technologies exclusively in terms of their environmental benefits dismisses important questions about how energy infrastructures can be designed to correspond to democratic forms of socio-politics, forms of social organization that involve independence in terms of meeting energy needs, resilience in terms of adapting to change, participatory decision making and control, equitable distribution of knowledge and efficacy, and just distribution of ownership. …

The Human Rights Regime: A Critique Of ‘Universality’ In A Patriarchal World, Ruchi Anand Oct 2016

The Human Rights Regime: A Critique Of ‘Universality’ In A Patriarchal World, Ruchi Anand

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

The international human rights regime can be traced to the embodiment of human rights provisions in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights sixty years ago. The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an opportunity to remind ourselves that the task of securing universal human rights is not over; it has merely begun. Human rights cannot be universal without human rights for women. Since human right’s of women are still in jeopardy, we need to continue our efforts to move the human rights discourse for women from rhetoric to reality.

Natural Resource Governance, Development And Political Stability In The Great Lakes Region: Case Study Of The Oil Sector In Uganda, Jacqueline Nakaiza Oct 2016

Natural Resource Governance, Development And Political Stability In The Great Lakes Region: Case Study Of The Oil Sector In Uganda, Jacqueline Nakaiza

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Discovery of significant oil resources in Uganda has been met with both optimism and skepticism. In as much as the country’s government argues that the discovery and exploitation of the oil will be a boost to the country’s development process, scholars, members of the political opposition and sections of the civil society contend that there is reason to fear for a possible oil resource curse. It is against this background that this study was undertaken; to scrutinize the content, process and implementation of the policies relating to exploitation of the oil and to determine whether these policies guarantee that the …

Integrating Environmental Justice Into Public Health: Approaches For Understanding Cumulative Impacts, Gina Solomon, John Faust, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Lauren Zeise Oct 2016

Integrating Environmental Justice Into Public Health: Approaches For Understanding Cumulative Impacts, Gina Solomon, John Faust, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Lauren Zeise

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Communities located near multiple sources of pollution, including current and former industrial sites, major roadways, and agricultural operations, are often predominantly low-income, with a large percentage of minorities and non-English speakers. These communities face additional challenges that can affect the health of their residents, including limited access to health care, a shortage of grocery stores, poor housing quality, and a lack of parks and open spaces. Research is now showing that environmental exposures can interact with social stressors, thereby worsening health outcomes. Age, nutrition, genetic characteristics, and preexisting health conditions also increase the risk of adverse health effects from exposure …

The Power+ Plan And Citizen’S Movement For Just Transition In Appalachia And Beyond, Betsy Taylor, Dwight Billings, Eric Dixon, Gabby Gillespie, Mary Anne Hitt, Bill Price, Adam Wells, Jeremy Richardson, Mary Hufford, Adam Hughes Oct 2016

The Power+ Plan And Citizen’S Movement For Just Transition In Appalachia And Beyond, Betsy Taylor, Dwight Billings, Eric Dixon, Gabby Gillespie, Mary Anne Hitt, Bill Price, Adam Wells, Jeremy Richardson, Mary Hufford, Adam Hughes

ASA Annual Conference

In January 2015, President Obama announced a five-year plan to direct over $1 billion into economic transition and reclamation in Appalachia and elsewhere. The proposed POWER+ plan draws funds from the Abandoned Mine Lands Fund and from five federal agencies. Through 2015, the Alliance for Appalachia and other grassroots organizations lobbied local governments to support POWER+. Dozens of county governments across Central Appalachia have passed resolutions in support. This roundtable reflects on this remarkably successful mobilization for just transition policy. It analyzes POWER+ in historical context of past macrostructural shifts in the relationship of the Corporate to the Local State. …

Appalachian Identity As Narrative Identity, M Joseph Aloi, Charles Brandon Hayes, Charlee Tidrick Oct 2016

Appalachian Identity As Narrative Identity, M Joseph Aloi, Charles Brandon Hayes, Charlee Tidrick

ASA Annual Conference

Much work in the field of Appalachian Studies seems to require the assumption that there is something that it is to be an Appalachian person. This paper draws on Paul Ricoeur’s account of personal identity as narrative identity to attempt to understand what Appalachian identity is. Ricoeur argues that, although there is a pre-narrative quality to human life itself, a narrative is required to synthesize the many different heterogeneous elements that make up our lives into a coherent whole. In creating the narratives that are our life stories, we draw not only on the pre-narrative character of life, but also …

Africa Rising - Illicit Financial Flows Too! The Need For Resolute Leadership In Africa's Resources Management, Sombo M. Chunda Oct 2016

Africa Rising - Illicit Financial Flows Too! The Need For Resolute Leadership In Africa's Resources Management, Sombo M. Chunda

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

This paper seeks to understand the relationship between Africa’s potential, the increase in illicit financial lows, and the leadership challenge in resource management. It looks at the resources that the continent possesses (human and natural), the serious challenge of illicit financial lows, and the need for deliberate and resolute leadership within and beyond the continent’s borders. It makes an assertion that there is a need to effectively manage the resources of the continent and proposes the need for concerted efforts to fight the illicit lows of resources out of the continent - a trend that doesn’t seem to slow down. …

Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas Oct 2016

Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Throughout the month of November 2016, I undertook a creative environmental art project in Melbourne, Australia. I chose to create a water-soluble oil painting (dimensions 3 ft. x 4 ft.) that represents water pollution problems in the city of Melbourne, particularly in Port Phillip Bay. These problems include toxic stormwater runoff, plastics pollution and plastic nurdles, as well as nutrient buildup and algal overgrowth. The painting includes messages regarding sustainability; sustainable action limits the use of our natural resources so that humans can preserve the environment for future generations rather than degrade it. In the painting, I combine conceptual and …

Beyond What Is Heard: A Documentary Film About Acoustic Ecology As Sustainability Activism, Jesse Rolfe Oct 2016

Beyond What Is Heard: A Documentary Film About Acoustic Ecology As Sustainability Activism, Jesse Rolfe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Acoustic ecology is an interdisciplinary field that studies the relationship between sounds, sound sources, and environment they exist within. From an environmental perspective, this involves a holistic consideration of ecosystems, and how the various organisms within that ecosystem, including humans, impact and interact with each other through sound. Biosphere Soundscapes, an international, interdisciplinary project directed by Australian acoustic ecologist Dr. Leah Barclay, operates to engage communities within UNESCO Biosphere Reserves through acoustic-ecological concepts, monitoring, and techniques. In November 2016, I undertook the process of creating a short documentary film entitled Beyond What is Heard, which aimed to explore how the …

Climate Change, Smart Growth, Racial Oppression, And White Privilege, Laura Stivers Oct 2016

Climate Change, Smart Growth, Racial Oppression, And White Privilege, Laura Stivers

Collected Faculty Scholarship

In this paper I will examine how people of differing environmental perspectives—namely anti-growth preservationists and environmental justice advocates—frame their responses to smart growth, using Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area as a case study. Then I will offer a race analysis of these frameworks based on the thesis that to address climate change through smart growth we need to challenge the ways certain groups try to retain their white privilege. As foundation for this thesis I will develop the norms of reparations and restoration to argue for an equitable smart growth approach that entails structural transformation to address …

Consumer Product Chemicals In Indoor Dust: A Quantitative Meta-Analysis Of U.S. Studies, Susanna D. Mitro, Robin Dodson, Veena Singla, Gary Adamkiewicz, Angelo F. Elmi, Monica Tilly, Ami R. Zota Oct 2016

Consumer Product Chemicals In Indoor Dust: A Quantitative Meta-Analysis Of U.S. Studies, Susanna D. Mitro, Robin Dodson, Veena Singla, Gary Adamkiewicz, Angelo F. Elmi, Monica Tilly, Ami R. Zota

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Indoor dust is a reservoir for commercial consumer product chemicals, including many compounds with known or suspected health effects. However, most dust exposure studies measure few chemicals in small samples. We systematically searched the U.S. indoor dust literature on phthalates, replacement flame retardants (RFRs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), synthetic fragrances, and environmental phenols and estimated pooled geometric means (GMs) and 95% confidence intervals for 45 chemicals measured in ≥3 data sets. In order to rank and contextualize these results, we used the pooled GMs to calculate residential intake from dust ingestion, inhalation, and dermal uptake from air, and then identified hazard …

Parks And W[Rec]K: Ecosystem Services Of Urban Parks, Serena Iacoviello Oct 2016

Parks And W[Rec]K: Ecosystem Services Of Urban Parks, Serena Iacoviello

Student Theses 2015-Present

As the general population and specifically urban populations continue to grow, cities must become more sustainable. Unfortunately in New York, cherished green spaces and their respective ecosystem services have been gravely degraded. This is especially true for underserved urban neighborhoods that often have the highest levels of pollution. In restoring mixed-used parks and protecting their ecosystem services, city dwellers can reap the benefits of improved social fabric, quality of life, local environment and economy. In my exploration of this subject I reference natural science and social science quantitative data. This data describes the ecological degradation and climate change and the …

Water Quality On Reservations In Nebraska, Nathan A. Reece

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The study of water comes in many different shapes and sizes, as well as many different situations and with many different perceptions across the globe. This meta-analysis will be focused on reservations in the state of Nebraska as compared to issues in other states. As we hear more and more about unrest and unjust of some other places in America in the news we must remember that water is essential to ALL life on the Earth near and far and we should be aware of the state of the water we drink daily. In this frame of mind, let it …

Urban Heat Island Of Lincoln, Nebraska, Evan Malloy Oct 2016

Urban Heat Island Of Lincoln, Nebraska, Evan Malloy

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The purpose of this research was to prove Lincoln Nebraska is an urban heat island, and temperatures within canopy are on average warmer than outside of canopy. This research is important because an urban heat leads to negative impacts on the human health, higher energy costs are evident, and has detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystems. In the study, temperatures under canopy and outside of canopy were recorded both in the dense urban area of Lincoln, as well as its rural counterpart 10.9 miles from the city center at Deer Springs Winery. The temperatures were then graphed to analyze the differences. …
