The Seas Are Changing: It’S Time To Use Ocean-Based Renewable Energy, The Public Trust Doctrine, And A Green Thumb To Protect Seas From Our Changing Climate, Jeffrey Thaler, Patrick Lyons

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

Climate change is having significant impacts on ocean and coastal ecosystems and wildlife, with rising seas inundating wetlands and coastal estuaries, warming waters altering marine species habitat and breeding behavior, and ocean acidification weakening corals, mollusks, and marine species, leaving them vulnerable to disease and predation. Though the threat of climate change has been acknowledged by President Obama and in federal statutory language,5 to date the U.S. government*242 has yet to provide a comprehensive plan to address the detrimental impacts of warming lands and seas. In response to governmental inaction, this Article seeks to demonstrate how the public …

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz Apr 2016

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Due to industrial and lifestyle changes, rural and small town areas are losing population and suffering economic hardship. These areas also suffer from the poorest health. However, most rural or small town residents also believe in the American Dream, revitalizing their local area, and preserving the small town or rural way of life. In this paper, I look at the relationship between obesity and local infrastructure – including walkability and access to healthy food – in southern Illinois. I then make suggestions for development policies for the region in the context of local public opinion.

Systems Of Access: A Multidisciplinary Strategy For Assessing The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability, Christopher Wolsko, Elizabeth Marino, Thomas J. Doherty, Steve Fisher, Amanda S. Green, Briana Goodwin, Ryan Reese, Andrea Wirth

Library Faculty Research

The concept of access to natural resources has been a specific concern of economists and ecologists and is a distinct component in recent models of social sustainability. Using a series of conceptual and empirical examples, this article extends the notion of access broadly to social institutions and sociocultural norms. We argue that access may be usefully construed as an analytic tool that has direct applicability to many sustainability issues as it allows for cross-disciplinary and public engagement. Here the concept of access, linked to Amartya Sen’s theory of capabilities, also makes visible the multi-scaled and interconnected social processes that influence …

Beyond Superfund: How Four Communities Market Outdoor Recreation To Overcome Stigma, Kelley Christensen Apr 2016

Beyond Superfund: How Four Communities Market Outdoor Recreation To Overcome Stigma, Kelley Christensen

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This paper reports on how four American towns that have active Superfund remediation underway in their communities are attempting to overcome stigma associated with the cleanup in part by promoting outdoor recreation. These towns are located in high-amenity areas and are able to market a bevy of recreational opportunities. This paper analyzes the interviews of eight people (two from each town) and print promotional materials from each community to determine rhetorical marketing techniques employed by each place. Finally, this paper uses quantitative data from a variety of sources to analyze how effective the marketing rhetoric has been in recent years.

An Evaluation Of Noise Reduction Strategies At Large Commercial Airports In The United States: A Policy Analysis And Framework Classification, Tyler Spence

Open Access Dissertations

Noise pollution from aircraft, specifically in the vicinity of airports as aircraft takeoff and land, is a problem that has been shown to have negative impacts on the welfare of humans, animals, and the surrounding environment. The problem may only become worse as air travel increases for cargo and passenger operations, populations increase, and the overall number of aircraft increase. Currently, guidance has been issued from the International Civil Aviation Organization on how to combat the issue of noise pollution through policy, both at that national regulatory level, and at the local airport level. This study evaluated the local airport …

Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Deconstruction Nonprofit In East St. Louis, Il, David M. Hoag Jr. Apr 2016

Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Deconstruction Nonprofit In East St. Louis, Il, David M. Hoag Jr.

All Capstone Projects

Background: According to an environmental justice case study by Kozol (2005), East St. Louis is considered the country's most distressed city. It has suffered from environmental and economic misfortunes for several decades. Many residents of the city have left due to the economic conditions of the city, which resulted in a loss of tax base. According to Hou (2010), the loss of tax base has had a severe impact on the community; the city that once had flourishing parks, streets, and businesses has now become blighted with condemned, abandoned, and foreclosed structures. Poor maintenance and neglect has led to decay …

Dreaming Free From The Chains: Teaching The Rhetorical Sovereignty Of Gerald Vizenor Through Bearheart, Lydia R. Presley Apr 2016

Dreaming Free From The Chains: Teaching The Rhetorical Sovereignty Of Gerald Vizenor Through Bearheart, Lydia R. Presley

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this thesis is to examine Gerald Vizenor’s novel Bearheart, through the lens of rhetorical sovereignty. What this means is that the crux of my understanding of Bearheart begins with the knowledge that the language, terminology, and style used by Vizenor are not only his choices, but also his inherent Native right to use. I argue that it is important to teach Vizenor’s theoretical ideas through Bearheart because each of its relatively short episodes, or series of episodes, deals with a key theoretical idea that can be explored not only in a Native American literature setting, but in …

Earth Systems Science As Civic Participation: An Approach To Youth Action Research For Social Change, Ciara Williams , '16 Apr 2016

Earth Systems Science As Civic Participation: An Approach To Youth Action Research For Social Change, Ciara Williams , '16

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Just as environmental justice challenges dominant notions of "environment" that cannot account for connections between social and natural processes, earth systems science pursues connections between science and society, challenging a dominant discourse which asserts that both can be fully understood without the other. Grounding "environment" and "science" as socially situated concepts helps to foreground, in turn, the ways that race structures exposure to risk and the exercise of citizenship both nationally and globally. My thesis draws on these discourses while focusing on youth as citizens and civic participation through the creation of an elementary school science curriculum.

Unmooring And Anchoring Bigger Thomas: Ontological Confusion And Mercy In Richard Wright’S Native Son, Davey Cox Apr 2016

Unmooring And Anchoring Bigger Thomas: Ontological Confusion And Mercy In Richard Wright’S Native Son, Davey Cox

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

Richard Wright's novel, Native Son, puts Bigger Thomas on display as an isolated soul, ontologically separated from the world around him and confused about his place in it. The work of Phillipe Descola aids in understanding the cultural models that lead to this confusion by elucidating the underlying schemas by which people organize their experience. Bigger's isolation appears incurable, or difficult to approach at best. The novel's proposed solution is mercy, or closeness and connection, which both Jan and Max offer Bigger. Much of the novel's content and it's treatment thereof is relevant to the environmental justice movement of …

The Citizenship Project: Commitment To Community, Sindee Kerker

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

The 3-week January term incorporates high-impact educational practices to provide students with an integrated learning environment centered on citizenship. Students take courses that focus on a civic issue, or problem, while engaging in experiential learning opportunities and community service work with local, community-based partners. Thematic areas for courses include homelessness, environmental sustainability and urban renewal. The university works with local partner organizations to enhance students understanding of civic engagement. A pre-and-post-test assessment was designed and implemented, based on a prepared survey instrument, and on common essay assignments with common measurements to assess both the knowledge and attitudinal components of citizenship.

This research is the result of a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) request to assess the most commonly available transit performance measures in California. Caltrans wanted to understand performance measures and data used by Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and transit agencies to help it develop statewide measures. This report serves as a summary reference guide to help Caltrans understand the numerous and diverse performance measures used by MPOs and transit agencies in California. First, investigators review the available literature to identify a complete transit performance framework for the purposes of organizing agency measures, metrics, and data sources. Next, they review …

The Promise Of An Energy Tracker Curriculum For Promoting Home-School Connections And Youth Agency In Climate Action, Elizabeth M. Walsh, Derek Jenkins, Eugene Cordero Apr 2016

The Promise Of An Energy Tracker Curriculum For Promoting Home-School Connections And Youth Agency In Climate Action, Elizabeth M. Walsh, Derek Jenkins, Eugene Cordero

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Formal classroom learning experiences that support sustainable behaviors outside the classroom necessarily must bridge students’ home and school lives, as knowledge and practice learned in the classroom is implemented outside of school. To this end, we study the impact of the Green Ninja Energy Tracker curriculum, which uses students’ home energy data in the classroom to promote engagement in climate change and conservation behaviors. Data is drawn from class observations, a focus group, and pre- and post- surveys of a pilot implementation of this curriculum in a diverse 12th-grade Earth Science classroom at an alternative school. We investigate what factors …
