An Investigation Into The Role Of Subliminal Inputs In Placebo Response, Sally A F Pearce Jan 2016

An Investigation Into The Role Of Subliminal Inputs In Placebo Response, Sally A F Pearce

School of Psychology Theses

According to the network theory of psychoneuroimmunology, (Hyland, 2011a), the placebo response is a short-term, problem solving response to a variety of inputs processed via the ‘infornet’. However, within the current infornet model of placebo response, these inputs are categorized as either conscious verbal inputs, or inputs learnt via traditional conditioning mechanisms. This thesis investigates the extent to which other ‘higher-order’ subliminal inputs may also play a part in determining placebo response. The findings presented here found no reliable effect of subliminal priming information on placebo response in a short-term placebo context. Further research is needed to determine if subliminally …

Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurship In The Growth And Development Of The Smaller State., Anthony Paul Buckley Jan 2016

Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurship In The Growth And Development Of The Smaller State., Anthony Paul Buckley

Conference papers

The median sovereign state size in the world has a population of 6.2m with 73 per cent of the states having a population under 20m (World Bank, 2014). Despite this, the mainstream literatures in most academic disciplines have chosen to neglect the unique determinants of smaller state growth and development. The purpose of this exploratory paper is to investigate whether smaller developed states actually perform better than other states and why? More specifically it investigates the role that entrepreneurship plays in this performance. This paper utilises an exploratory ‘cross-case’ analytic approach (Yin, 2014) in attempting to identify cross case patterns …

Dodging Marshmallows: Simulations To Teach Ethics, Justin Weidman, Dawan Coombs Jan 2016

Dodging Marshmallows: Simulations To Teach Ethics, Justin Weidman, Dawan Coombs

Faculty Publications

Students had just participated in an experiential learning exercise where they played dodgeball using marshmallows. But the unique context of the game introduced ethical dilemmas that integrated ethics education into a technical education classroom setting.

Research shows that “Engineering curriculum and activities at the K-12 level should be designed to expose students to [ethical considerations inherent in the practice of engineering], and as a result students should be aware of the importance of these issues in the field of engineering” (Moore, Glancy, Tank, Kersten, Smith, & Stohlmann, 2014). But how do STEM teachers teach students to think about ethical issues …

A Teaching Module For Engineers On Robotic Safety: Approaches And Effectiveness, Mark A. Rosen, Dan Zhang Jan 2016

A Teaching Module For Engineers On Robotic Safety: Approaches And Effectiveness, Mark A. Rosen, Dan Zhang

Teaching and Learning in a Digital Context

A teaching module recently developed by the authors for engineers on robotic safety using various approaches (Powerpoint presentation and written document) is described and an assessment of the effectiveness of using the module is presented. The effectiveness of the teaching module and its different approaches is assessed by using it in a class setting, and surveying the opinions of the students. The content delivery approaches and learning approaches are also assessed, based on student opinions. The teaching module is determined to be effective at promoting student learning on robotics safety, and to offer multiple useful delivery modes. The teaching module …

Student Voices: What Students Say They Do To Be Successful, Alyson E. King Jan 2016

Student Voices: What Students Say They Do To Be Successful, Alyson E. King

Student Success

Since a post-secondary education tends to lead to improved life chances and opportunities, understanding the ways in which students at all levels of university are able to succeed is important not only for individuals, but also for the nation. In spite of the success of targeted first- year retention programs, most universities in Ontario have much lower degree completion rates. Few existing studies of university persistence and success focus on what students themselves say about how and why they are successful at persisting to graduation. This pilot study compared the strategies for success at university used by self-identified visible minority …

Technology Infusion Within Part-Time Professional Development Programmes For Academic Staff And Industry Practitioners, Claire Mcavinia, Claire M. Mcdonnell, Roisin Donnelly

Partnerships

This paper reports on the experiences of programme co-ordinators and includes findings from a two year (2013-15) evaluation pilot study on a key communication technology – audio feedback – conducted across three accredited part-time programmes for a blend of academic staff (faculty) in higher education and eLearning industry practitioners. Key to our decision making with regards to which tools to infuse in our programmes is our aim to help the educators who participate on our programmes to make better use of technology tools in their own instructional contexts. This paper focuses on the example of formative audio feedback. Anticipated benefits …

A Comparison Of The Mathematical Performance Of Mature Students And Traditional Students Over A 10-Year Period, Fiona Faulkner, Olivia Fitzmaurice, Olivia Hannigan Jan 2016

A Comparison Of The Mathematical Performance Of Mature Students And Traditional Students Over A 10-Year Period, Fiona Faulkner, Olivia Fitzmaurice, Olivia Hannigan

Journal Articles

Every student who enrols in a degree programme involving service mathematics in the University of Limerick in Ireland is given a mathematics diagnostic test. The diagnostic test was developed due to mathematics lecturers’ anxiety regarding students’ mathematical competency levels. Students receive the 40 question paper-based test in their first service mathematics lecture without prior notification. Initial analysis of students’ work revealed that many students were having difficulties with basic algebra and arithmetic in particular [Gill, O. 2006. “What Counts as Service Mathematics? An Investigation into the ‘Mathematics Problem’ in Ireland.” PhD diss., University of Limerick]. Further research highlighted the significant …

Relationship Between Individualized Training Impulse And Aerobic Fitness Measures In Hurling Players Across A Training Period, Shane Malone, Kieran Collins Jan 2016

Relationship Between Individualized Training Impulse And Aerobic Fitness Measures In Hurling Players Across A Training Period, Shane Malone, Kieran Collins

Articles

The current study examined the association between individual internal training load (individualized training impulse, iTRIMP) and aerobic fitness variables in male hurling players. Twenty hurling players (age, 25.5 ± 3.2 years; height, 178.9 ± 3.2 cm; body mass, 78.5 ± 4.5 kg) performed treadmill testing for V[Combining Dot Above]O2max, running economy (RE), and the speed at blood lactate concentrations of 2 mmol·L (S2) and 4 mmol·L (S4) on separate occasions before and after an 8-week training period. The Yo-Yo intermittent recovery (Yo-YoIR1, Yo-YoIR2) test performance were also assessed before and after the training period. Individualized training impulse was calculated using …

Sentiment Classification Using Negation As A Proxy For Negative Sentiment, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2016

Sentiment Classification Using Negation As A Proxy For Negative Sentiment, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

We explore the relationship between negated text and neg- ative sentiment in the task of sentiment classification. We propose a novel adjustment factor based on negation occur- rences as a proxy for negative sentiment that can be applied to lexicon-based classifiers equipped with a negation detec- tion pre-processing step. We performed an experiment on a multi-domain customer reviews dataset obtaining accuracy improvements over a baseline, and we further improved our results using out-of-domain data to calibrate the adjustment factor. We see future work possibilities in exploring nega- tion detection refinements, and expanding the experiment to a broader spectrum of opinionated …

Listener Perceptions Of Simulated Fluent Speech In Nonfluent Aphasia, Tyson G. Harmon, Adam Jacks, Katarina L. Haley, Richard A. Faldowski Jan 2016

Listener Perceptions Of Simulated Fluent Speech In Nonfluent Aphasia, Tyson G. Harmon, Adam Jacks, Katarina L. Haley, Richard A. Faldowski

Faculty Publications

Background: People with aphasia (PWA) are frequently perceived less favorably by listeners than their peers. These perceptions include incorrect assumptions that can prevent successful social interactions. While communication partner training has been shown to improve social outcomes related to the listener (see e.g., Kagan, Black, Duchan, Simmons-Mackie, & Square, 2001), changing the verbal output of PWA may also yield more favorable listener perceptions about the speech, speaker, and their own affective response. We investigated the effects of artificially altered fluency (i.e., simulated fluency) on listeners’ subjective impressions.

Aims: The purpose of the study was to (1) confirm that listeners perceive …

Early Christianity, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2016

Early Christianity, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

As Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives at the end of his forty-day resurrected ministry, he directed his apostles to be witnesses “in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8; see also Matthew 28:19–20). In giving this direction, he rescinded the command he gave when he first called them to “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans” (Matthew 10:5). The shift in emphasis and direction brought significant challenges for the fledgling church. It is in the church’s response to meet those challenges that we see many …
