Servant Leadership And Cultural Characteristics As Predictors Of Follower Engagement, George Bovenzi Dec 2016

Servant Leadership And Cultural Characteristics As Predictors Of Follower Engagement, George Bovenzi

Education Doctoral

Servant leadership theory, introduced in the 1970s, has gained in popularity in recent years. Servant leadership’s roots in serving, caring, and behaving ethically makes it a leadership model that is timely and relevant in light of today’s global, organizational, and political challenges. Additionally, an engaged workforce is considered to be a key lever that organizations utilize to gain an advantage in the marketplace while disengaged employees present a significant cost to companies. Nevertheless, servant leadership’s impact on organizations and specifically its ability to engage employees has received limited research. This quantitative study was undertaken in a multinational manufacturing organization and …

Mission In Evolving Cultures: Constructively Managing Music-Related Conflict In Cross-Cultural Church Planting Contexts, David R. Dunaetz Oct 2016

Mission In Evolving Cultures: Constructively Managing Music-Related Conflict In Cross-Cultural Church Planting Contexts, David R. Dunaetz

Selected Faculty Publications

The choice of music, an essential element of worship and church life, must be addressed in cross-cultural church planting contexts. As cultures evolve, church planters are faced with choices about musical styles that may lead to interpersonal conflicts within the church. The purpose of this study is to empirically examine factors that may enable cross-cultural church planters to constructively manage music-related conflicts when they arise. Members of church plants, like all people, have various goals when entering into such conflicts. They are concerned about the content of the conflict (i.e., the musical style) and thus have content goals. They are …

Fisheries Research Articles

Creating large conservation zones in remote areas, with less intense stakeholder overlap and limited environmental information, requires periodic review to ensure zonation mitigates primary threats and fill gaps in representation, while achieving conservation targets. Follow-up reviews can utilise improved methods and data, potentially identifying new planning options yielding a desirable balance between stakeholder interests. This research explored a marine zoning system in north-west Australia–a biodiverse area with poorly documented biota. Although remote, it is economically significant (i.e. petroleum extraction and fishing). Stakeholder engagement was used to source the best available biodiversity and socio-economic data and advanced spatial analyses produced 765 …

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke Aug 2016

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Over the last three years, the Scientist in Residence program (a collaboration between the Department of Education and Child Development, and Flinders University) investigated a model of professional learning in science education that capitalised upon teachers’ moral purpose and drove their creativity. Insight into how teachers transformed their science classrooms is provided through examples of activities, work samples and clips of teachers describing how they changed their practice and how that, in turn, changed the engagement and achievement of the children. These resources will serve to illustrate some of the principles of practice that the teachers drew upon. In particular, …

Learning Sustainability Leadership: An Action Research Study Of A Graduate Leadership Course, Heather L. Burns

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study used action research methodology to examine the development of sustainability leadership in a graduate leadership course. The research investigated the impact of this leadership course, which was designed using transformative learning theory with attention to integrating thematic content, multiple and non-dominant perspectives, a participatory process, and a contextual place-based approach. Grounded theory was used to explore if and how students’ understanding of sustainability leadership changed, and the pedagogical strategies that were most influential to their learning. Results revealed that students came to understand sustainability leadership as: the facilitation of a shared process, a process of emergence, and a …

Professionalization Of Teaching In America: Two Case Studies Using Educational Research Experiences To Explore The Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers/Researchers, James E. Gentry, Credence Baker, Holly Lamb

Administrative Issues Journal

In 2013-2015, two faculty-led educational research studies were conducted, aided by five undergraduate preservice teachers/researchers (PSTR). Faculty-researchers designed a qualitative phenomenological-inquiry based methodology to examine the PSTR perceptions regarding their respective research experiences with faculty. Triangulation of the data was sought from narrative text interview transcripts and response essays by PSTR prior to and after each respective study. Using content analysis techniques and coding, five themes emerged. PSTR reported an interest in the educational research topic and the need for positive relationships with faculty research mentors to begin and remain active with a research study. The results indicated PSTR valued …

The Influence Of Team Prosocial Motivation On Emergent States And Shared Leadership, Tyree David Mitchell Jun 2016

The Influence Of Team Prosocial Motivation On Emergent States And Shared Leadership, Tyree David Mitchell

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Despite the growing body of research on shared leadership, relatively little is known about the antecedents of shared leadership. The following study examined the effects of team prosocial motivation on team emergent states (i.e., team empowerment, psychological safety) and shared leadership. Drawing on motivational theories (e.g., self-determination theory), it was hypothesized that team empowerment and psychological safety would mediate the relationship between team prosocial motivation and shared leadership. Also, in line with the social identity and self-categorization perspectives, it was hypothesized that team surface-level diversity (racial diversity, gender diversity, faultline strength) would moderate the effects of team prosocial motivation on …

The Ethnographic Method In Csr Research: The Role And Importance Of Methodological Fit, A. Erin Bass, Ivana Milosevec

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) research has burgeoned in the past several decades. Despite significant advances, our review of the literature reveals a problematic gap: We know little about how culture, practices, and interactions shape CSR. On further investigation, we discover that limited research utilizes ethnography to understand CSR, which may provide some explanation for this gap. Thus, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the utility of ethnography for advancing business and society research via a multistage framework that demonstrates how three different types of ethnography may be applied to the exploration of CSR. We specifically focus on the …

Predictors Of Participation And The Effects Of Undergraduates' Involvement In A First-Year Emerging Leadership Program, Brent Aaron Papson May 2016

Predictors Of Participation And The Effects Of Undergraduates' Involvement In A First-Year Emerging Leadership Program, Brent Aaron Papson

Master’s Theses

Greater involvement has been linked to higher satisfaction rates in students' experiences (Astin, 1993b), and the greater the level of a student's social and academic involvement has been linked to the greater likelihood for persistence (Tinto, 1975). Involvement in educationally purposeful activities during the first year of college had a statistically significant effect on student persistence from first to sophomore year (Kuh, Cruce, Shoup, Kinzie, & Gonyea, 2008). Educationally purposeful activities, such as a leadership program developing socially responsible leadership, has been found to influence persistence from first to sophomore year (Wolniak, Mayhew, & Engberg, 2012). The purpose of the …

Ad Hoc Groups Engaged In Emergency Decision Making: A Mixed-Methods Study To Improve Successful Self-Escape From Underground Coal Fires, Timothy J. Bauerle May 2016

Ad Hoc Groups Engaged In Emergency Decision Making: A Mixed-Methods Study To Improve Successful Self-Escape From Underground Coal Fires, Timothy J. Bauerle

Doctoral Dissertations

Although the mining industry has made enormous strides in health and safety initiatives over the past few decades, the risk for life-threatening emergency situations is still present. In emergency situations, underground coal miners could be miles from the nearest exit and have to “self-escape” from a potentially hazardous environment. Although anecdotally self-escape from underground mine incidents most often occurs in a group context, the extent to which group behavior may affect the success of self-escape attempts has been vastly understudied. The present research effort attempts to address this gap by using an inductive, case study design to determine if any …

Bridgers In The Third Space: An In-Country Investigation Of The Leadership Practices Of Us-Educated Chinese Nationals, Maria L. Martinez May 2016

Bridgers In The Third Space: An In-Country Investigation Of The Leadership Practices Of Us-Educated Chinese Nationals, Maria L. Martinez

Educational Studies Dissertations

This in-country grounded theory study examined the lived experiences of 24 Chinese returnees who completed advanced degrees in the United States. The study found that the four types of organizations in mainland China determine the social context of the application of Western education of the Chinese returnees. Returnees working in multinational corporations apply their Western education more than the returnees working in the other types of organizations. Themes that revolved around the international educational experiences of the Chinese students, including the development of cultural intelligence and new understanding of the ‘other’, and their realization of the differences between their home …

Improving Trauma Team Process And Performance Through Simulation, Melissa Regalado-Smith Apr 2016

Improving Trauma Team Process And Performance Through Simulation, Melissa Regalado-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

According to the National Trauma Institute [NTI] (2014), trauma accounts for 41 million United States emergency department visits and 2.3 million hospital admissions. It is the leading cause of death in people age 1-46 years and is the third leading cause of death overall. Doumouras, Keshet, Nathens, Ahmed, and Hicks (2014) reported that errors in trauma resuscitation can be linked to deficiencies in trauma team processes and performance. These deficiencies were found in a level II trauma center in a small Midwestern city. This project was developed to provide evidence-based team training strategies to improve the care of the trauma …

From Knowledge To Action: Tips For Encouraging And Measuring Program-Related Behavior Change, Scott Chazdon, Jody Horntvedt, Elizabeth Templin Apr 2016

From Knowledge To Action: Tips For Encouraging And Measuring Program-Related Behavior Change, Scott Chazdon, Jody Horntvedt, Elizabeth Templin

Journal of Extension

It is challenging to document the behavior changes that result from Extension programming. This article describes an evaluation method we call the "action items method." Unlike other approaches for measuring behavior change, this method requires program participants to define their own action plans as part of a program and then asks them about completing these goals several months after program completion. To the extent that we help participants identify specific behavioral changes that move them beyond their individual lives, we also exemplify the public value of Extension programming.
