Lucumi And The Children Of Cotton: Gender, Race, And Ethnicity In The Mapping Of A Black Atlantic Politics Of Religion, Akissi M. Britton
Lucumi And The Children Of Cotton: Gender, Race, And Ethnicity In The Mapping Of A Black Atlantic Politics Of Religion, Akissi M. Britton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation I have examined claims to religious authenticity, purity, legitimacy and authority through the lens of a Black and African American Orisa community in Brooklyn, New York. Through these claims, made both internally and to a broader Orisa community within the United States and throughout different locales in the Black Atlantic, I have articulated how they are more often than not linked to very non-religious aspects of social life. Members of this community, and the broader Orisa Atlantic of which they are a part, do not practice this tradition in a social, cultural, or political vacuum. In fact, …
This Species Of Property: Slavery And The Properties Of Subjecthood In Anglo-American Law And Politics, 1619-1783, John N. Blanton
This Species Of Property: Slavery And The Properties Of Subjecthood In Anglo-American Law And Politics, 1619-1783, John N. Blanton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This Species of Property examines the development of the law and practice of slavery in the 17th and 18th century Anglo-American empire through analysis of common law court decisions in England, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The dissertation argues that there was a long and vibrant debate over the legitimacy of the chattel principle – the definition of enslaved persons as a type of property – and that enslaved people and their allies pushed for the recognition of the legal humanity or subjecthood of the enslaved in colonial and metropolitan courts. This antislavery legal tradition culminated in the famous Somerset …
Research And Creative Scholarship, Andrews University
Research And Creative Scholarship, Andrews University
Annual Research Highlights
Rigorous investigation, sound methodology, and creative analysis are trademarks of research and creative scholarship. All “texts” and “elements” demand to be treated with integrity, whether the musical text of a Beethoven sonata, the visual text of a painting or documentary film, or the elements of heterocyclic amines and mosaic remains. The faculty highlighted in this brochure exemplify a commitment to inquiring with integrity that represents the philosophy of Andrews University.

Bioarchaeological Investigations Of Nineteenth-Century African American Burials At The Pioneer Cemetery (41bo202) In Brazoria, Texas, Aaron R. Norment, Jeremy W. Pye, Cory J. Broehm, Douglas K. Boyd
Bioarchaeological Investigations Of Nineteenth-Century African American Burials At The Pioneer Cemetery (41bo202) In Brazoria, Texas, Aaron R. Norment, Jeremy W. Pye, Cory J. Broehm, Douglas K. Boyd
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
A search for unmarked graves in the state-owned right of way and underneath the pavement of State Highway 332 resulted in the discovery and archeological excavation of 11 unmarked graves associated with Pioneer Cemetery, an African American burial ground in Brazoria, Texas. Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted the fieldwork for the Texas Department of Transportation’s Archeological Studies Program. Between 2008 and 2012, the 11 unmarked graves were discovered, exhumed, analyzed, and then reinterred in Pioneer Cemetery in September 2012. This report describes the bioarcheological investigations of those burials along with 3 other unmarked burials that were previously exhumed and reburied …

Creating Knowledge
Dear Students, Colleagues, Alumni and Friends,
Throughout my career as faculty and administrator in higher education I have been honored with the opportunity to introduce and celebrate the publication of scholarly work by colleagues and graduate students in many disciplines and institutions around the world. After more than three decades of doing so, this is the first time that I have the pleasure of introducing a formal publication of work created by a talented group of undergraduate scholars. This honor is further magnified by the fact that beyond its formal format, this is a reviewed publication of extraordinary rigor and …

Racialized Intimacy In Afrofuturism, Nasib Mcintosh
Racialized Intimacy In Afrofuturism, Nasib Mcintosh
Theses & ETDs
This thesis analyzes the representations of racialized intimacy in two Afrofuturistic works: “The Comet” written by W.E.B Du Bois and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine created by Michel Piller and Rick Berman. Afrofuturism is both a genre of black cultural production and an analytical framework for critiquing discourses about the future. Afrofuturistic works and analyses interrogate and critique the construction of contemporary racial identities by envisioning how racialized subjects might function in imagined futures. The works I analyze in this thesis offer critiques and revisions of dominant discourses about interracial intimacy in their respective time periods as well as the …
“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro
“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro
Africana Studies: Faculty Publications
López Oro analyzes two census campaigns—one in New York City and one in Honduras—geared toward Garifuna populations in order to interrogate larger questions about how Garifuna populations are included, or not, within dominant discourses of Honduran multiculturalism and US Latinidad. He argues that Garifuna are a quintessentially diasporic population who disrupt common assumptions about what it means to be Honduran, Latino, and/or Black in the Americas.

Centering Education In The Next Great Copyright Act: A Response To Professor Jaszi, Deidre Keller
Journal Publications
Rather, as the Georgia State decisions exemplify, educators and educational institutions are treated like every other unlicensed user of copyrighted materials; they are expected to prove that each use is a fair use firmly within the confines of existing fair use jurisprudence. Jaszi further asserts that endeavoring to change the copy-right statute is a lost cause and offers, as the least bad alternative, the possibility of educators articulating their uses as transformative and, therefore, well within the recognized parameters of the fair use doctrine. This piece responds to Professor Jaszi’s article. Part II briefly analyzes the Georgia State decisions out …

(Re)Writing History In Maryse Condé, Femi Euba, And Reinaldo Arenas, Lázara Bolton
(Re)Writing History In Maryse Condé, Femi Euba, And Reinaldo Arenas, Lázara Bolton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This comparative study asserts the centrality of spirituality to literature that explores life in the African Diaspora. Specifically, it emphasizes the importance of spirituality both to the authors and to the lives of their characters in the novels Victoire, les saveurs et les mots (2006) by the Guadeloupian author Maryse Condé, Camwood at Crossroads (2007) by Nigerian author Femi Euba, and El color del verano (1991) by Cuban author Reinaldo Arenas. A close reading of the three novels shows that they are representative of autohistoría literary works, which represent the spirituality of the writer, as well as the people written …
