A Scalable Model For Monograph Assessment: A Case Study At Musselman Library, Amy E. Ward
All Musselman Library Staff Works
The evolution of monograph assessment in Musselman Library resulted in a model that sustains concurrent assessment initiatives large and small, as well as time-bound and ongoing, with the purpose of shaping collections in support of the academic and creative interests at Gettysburg College. This presentation outlines the design of the 2012 assessment model that has become the foundation for assessing our circulating monograph collection, along with how the original model has been adjusted to assess more focused targets and larger initiatives, each with rapidly approaching deadlines. Finally, this presentation summarizes the workflows needed to support continuous decision making and provides …
Contingency Workload Demand Forecast Techniques For Cargo And Flying Hours, Calvin J. Bradshaw Iii
Contingency Workload Demand Forecast Techniques For Cargo And Flying Hours, Calvin J. Bradshaw Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate forecasting of contingency workload demand for USTRANSCOM (USTC) is a herculean effort. Transportation Working Capital Fund (TWCF) managers rely on various subject matters outside and within the combatant command to estimate future workload. Since rates are set annually, when TWCF activities use incorrect or incomplete projections of workload, this leads to erroneous price structures and misaligned customer billing rates. The USTC leadership lacks the ability to accurately forecast workload demand, which is a key driver for service provider rate-setting. As a result, some customers perceive spiked rates and seek service from other competitors, which generates lost revenue, customer dissatisfaction …

Public Engagement: A Vital Leadership Skill, Ashley Trim
Public Engagement: A Vital Leadership Skill, Ashley Trim
eJournal of Public Affairs
From the earliest days of the American republic, local communities have been incubators of civic health in the United States. While national, state, and local assessments of civic health show a lack of public engagement in political and social activities that were once the foundation of healthy local democracy, these first decades of the 21st century have revealed both new challenges for local governments and new tools for engagement. As local leaders revisit the important role of engaged citizens in local programs and policies, the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership at the Pepperdine University School of Public …

Population Structure, Genetic Diversity, Geographic Distribution, And Morphology Of Two Boechera (Brassicaceae) Parental Species (Boechera Thompsonii And Boechera Formosa) And Of Their Resultant Hybrid Boechera Duchesnensis, Christina Elizabeth Fox Call
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Over the relatively short period of its evolutionary history, Boechera (Brassicaceae) has undergone rapid radiation that has produced 70+ morphologically distinct, sexual diploids. However, reproductive isolation has moved more slowly than morphological divergence in this group and the diploids appear to hybridize frequently where they coexist. Boechera duchesnensis appears to be the result of hybridization between its putative parents Boechera thompsonii and Boechera formosa. Objectives: The objectives of this study are to (i) analyze and document genetic diversity patterns in the population structure, - including allelic and heterozygosity frequencies - of B. thompsonii and B. formosa …

In Loco Aequitatis: The Dangers Of 'Safe Harbor' Laws For Youth In The Sex Trades, Brendan M. Conner
Faculty Publications
This Article provides the first critical analysis of safe harbor laws, which rely on custodial arrests to prosecute or divert youth arrested for or charged with prostitution related offenses under criminal or juvenile codes to court supervision under state child welfare, foster care, or dependency statutes. This subject is a matter of intense debate nationwide, and on May 29, 2015 the President signed legislation that would give preferential consideration for federal grants to states that have enacted a law that "discourages the charging or prosecution" of a trafficked minor and encourages court-ordered treatment and institutionalization. Nearly universally lauded, the sound …
Quantifying Demographic Uncertainty: Bayesian Methods For Integral Projection Models, Bret D. Elderd, Tom E.X. Miller
Quantifying Demographic Uncertainty: Bayesian Methods For Integral Projection Models, Bret D. Elderd, Tom E.X. Miller
Faculty Publications
© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America. Integral projection models ( IPM s) are a powerful and popular approach to modeling population dynamics. Generalized linear models form the statistical backbone of an IPM . These models are typically fi t using a frequentist approach. We suggest that hierarchical Bayesian statistical approaches offer important advantages over frequentist methods for building and interpreting IPM s, especially given the hierarchical nature of most demographic studies. Using a stochastic IPM for a desert cactus based on a 10- year study as a worked example, we highlight the application of a Bayesian approach for …

Results of the survey indicate that judging team experience was highly influential in the development of communication, public speaking, and presentation skills. Respondents also indicated that judging team experience was valuable in introducing them to opportunities in agriculture and the dairy industry, educational opportunities, and professional opportunities. Eighty-four percent of the respondents currently use their evaluation and decision-making skills both professionally and personally. All respondents indicated that judging activity benefits outweigh the costs associated with maintaining judging …
Who Cares About The Environment? A Study Of Environmental Behavior In Maine, Chandler L. Blake
Who Cares About The Environment? A Study Of Environmental Behavior In Maine, Chandler L. Blake
Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby
Identifying and targeting environmentally minded people is crucial to making any environmental campaign successful. It allows you to advertise to the people who will be the most helpful and supportive to your cause. The goal of this study is to identify the general demographics of environmentally minded people. To do this I examine voting data through each county in Maine and run a regression to test whether income, education level, and household size have any correlation to how the county votes on environmental issues. I found that the higher a county’s income, the more environmentally friendly their voting. I also …
Multilevel Analysis Of State Variations In Women's Participation In Household Decision-Making In Nigeria, Esther O. Lamidi
Multilevel Analysis Of State Variations In Women's Participation In Household Decision-Making In Nigeria, Esther O. Lamidi
Journal of International Women's Studies
Although the past two decades featured burgeoning research on issues affecting women’s lives in Nigeria, the existing studies of women’s status and decision-making autonomy in the country leave important gap in their representations of the high level of sociocultural heterogeneity in the country. Using a nationally representative survey data, the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS, n = 26,306), this study examines variations in women’s decision-making autonomy across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria. A series of multilevel linear regression models revealed that Nigerian women’s levels of participation in household decision-making varied significantly across states …
Common Sense Beliefs About The Central Self, Moral Character, And The Brain, D. Fernandez-Duque, Barry Schwartz
Common Sense Beliefs About The Central Self, Moral Character, And The Brain, D. Fernandez-Duque, Barry Schwartz
Psychology Faculty Works
To assess lay beliefs about self and brain, we probed people's opinions about the central self, in relation to morality, willful control, and brain relevance. In study 1, 172 participants compared the central self to the peripheral self. The central self, construed at this abstract level, was seen as more brain-based than the peripheral self, less changeable through willful control, and yet more indicative of moral character. In study 2, 210 participants described 18 specific personality traits on 6 dimensions: centrality to self, moral relevance, willful control, brain dependence, temporal stability, and desirability. Consistent with Study 1, centrality to the …

03. Population Demographics Of The Loggerhead Shrike: Insights Into The Species Decline From A Long-Term Study In The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Amy A. Chabot, Fran Harty, James Herkert, William Glass
North American Prairie Conference Proceedings
We monitored a breeding population of loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie from 2005 to 2016. Demographic data were compiled annually, including information on population size, age structure, and reproductive success. We banded adult shrikes, with some additional effort focused on nestlings (2005–2007) and independent hatch-year birds (2014–2016). We measured return rate as the number of birds that were previously banded. Site reuse rates were quantified as the use of a breeding territory in multiple years. Site fidelity, the use of a site by the same male or female in consecutive years, and dispersal distance of …

Systematic Review Of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel For Early Detection, Management, And Risk Stratification In The West Virginian Population, Krithika Srikanthan, Andrew Feyh, Haresh Visweshwar, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Introduction: Metabolic syndrome represents a cluster of related metabolic abnormalities, including central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance, with central obesity and insulin resistance in particular recognized as causative factors. These metabolic derangements present significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is commonly recognized as the primary clinical outcome, although other outcomes are possible. Metabolic syndrome is a progressive condition that encompasses a wide array of disorders with specific metabolic abnormalities presenting at different times. These abnormalities can be detected and monitored via serum biomarkers. This review will compile a list of promising biomarkers that are associated with metabolic …

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
This paper describes a study of success factors in the introductory semester of liberal studies blended courses offered at the bachelor of science level. The influence of student participation in the online course environment was examined, as measured by the number of times students logged into the learning management system (LMS) and average session length. These measures were correlated with final course grades to increase understanding of the participation patterns of successful students. The resulting patterns and their implications are identified. We observe that students with an intermediate number of logins and average session length tended to exhibit the optimal …

The Case For Lgbt Equality: Reviving The Political Process Doctrine And Repurposing The Dormant Commerce Clause, Terri R. Day, Danielle Weatherby
Brooklyn Law Review
As a reaction to the Supreme Court’s historic marriage equality decision earlier this summer, many Southern state legislators opposing the trend toward LGBT-protective laws have proposed legislation that would essentially prohibit municipalities from carving out new antidiscrimination protections for the LGBT community. Conservative Senator Bart Hester spearheaded the passing of one of these “anti” antidiscrimination laws in Arkansas, and states like Texas, West Virginia, Michigan, and Oklahoma are not far behind. These “Hester-type laws” are strikingly similar to the Colorado amendment struck down by the Romer v. Evans Court 20 years ago. Both the Colorado amendment and the new wave …

Identifying The Factors That Affect The Job Satisfaction Of Early Career Notre Dame Graduate Physiotherapists, Eleni Bacopanos, Susan Edgar
Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles
Objective: Previous studies have highlighted the short career intentions and high attrition rates of physiotherapists from the profession. The aim of this study was to examine the job satisfaction and attrition rates of early career physiotherapists graduating from one Western Australian university.
Methods: A self-administered online survey was conducted of 157 Notre Dame physiotherapy graduates (2006-2012), incorporating a job satisfaction rating scale.
Results: Results showed that lowered job satisfaction was related to working in the cardiorespiratory area of physiotherapy and working in multiple jobs since graduation. The majority of graduates did not predict a long-term career in …
Demography Of Honors: The National Landscape Of Honors Education, Richard Ira Scott, Patricia J. Smith
Demography Of Honors: The National Landscape Of Honors Education, Richard Ira Scott, Patricia J. Smith
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
As the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) celebrates its fiftieth year, the organization has an excellent opportunity to reflect on how honors education has spread during its history. Tracking growth in the number of institutions delivering honors education outside of its membership has not been a priority for NCHC or for researchers in honors education. Most information has been anecdotal, and when researchers have mounted surveys, the results are frequently non-comprehensive, based on convenience sampling. We propose a demography of honors to fill the lacuna with systemic, reliable information.
Demographic studies describe the size, structure, and distribution of human populations, …

From Orientation Needs To Developmental Realities: The Honors First-Year Seminar In A National Context, Anton Vander Zee, Trisha Folds-Bennett, Elizabeth Meyer-Bernstein, Brendan Reardon
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
The transition into college remains one of the most formative and complex phases in an individual’s life. Institutions of higher learning have responded to the challenges facing first-year students in myriad ways, most often by offering summer orientation programs, dynamic living-learning environments, tailored academic and psychological support services, and dedicated first-year seminars (FYSs) that seek to engage students in a range of curricular and co-curricular experiences. FYSs—courses intended to enhance the academic skills and/or social development of first-year college students—have become the curricular anchors grounding this broad array of programming. While addressing the developmental needs of first-year students is the …

Demography Of Honors: Comparing Nchc Members And Non-Members, Patricia J. Smith, Richard I. Scott
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Recent research describing the landscape of honors education has demonstrated that honors programs and colleges have become an important and expanding component of American higher education. Since its inception nearly a century ago, collegiate honors education offering campus-wide curricula has spread to more than 1,500 non-profit colleges and universities (Scott and Smith, “Demography”). NCHC has served as the umbrella organization for the collegiate honors community during a fifty-year period in which the number of known programs delivering honors education has experienced a more than four-fold increase (Rinehart; Scott and Smith, “Demography”).
In 2012, NCHC undertook systematic research of its member …
