Heavy South: Identity, Performance, And Heavy Music In The Southern Metal Scene, Michael A. Mcdowell Jun 2016

Heavy South: Identity, Performance, And Heavy Music In The Southern Metal Scene, Michael A. Mcdowell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Southern Metal scene depends heavily on the performance of a Southern Identity. While considerable research has been done on other musical genres and scenes from the American South (country music, blues, gospel music), less attention has been given to the extreme metal scene of Southern Metal. Using scholarship of Nadine Hubbs, Philip Auslander, Jefferey C. Alexander, and Keith Kahn Harris, among others, I analyze two films, Slow Southern Steel (2010) and NOLA: Life, Death, and Heavy Blues from the Bayou (2014), and one song, Down’s “Eyes of the South” as cultural productions of this Southern Metal scene. In …

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

This study aims to investigate factors that influence civil servants to whistle-blow fraud. It also investigates the effect of government’s bureaucracy reforming program on the civil servants’ intention to whistle-blow fraud. By employing the theory of reasoned action, this study included variables of subjective norms, attitudes, and whistle-blowing intentions. This study used primary data gathered from questionnaires of 293 respondents. Respondents were civil servants in the ministries/agencies that have and have not implemented bureaucratic reforms. The findings of this study indicated that subjective norms positively affected the attitudes and intentions of civil servants to report the wrongdoings. However, the attitudes …

Professionalization Of Teaching In America: Two Case Studies Using Educational Research Experiences To Explore The Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers/Researchers, James E. Gentry, Credence Baker, Holly Lamb Jun 2016

Professionalization Of Teaching In America: Two Case Studies Using Educational Research Experiences To Explore The Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers/Researchers, James E. Gentry, Credence Baker, Holly Lamb

Administrative Issues Journal

In 2013-2015, two faculty-led educational research studies were conducted, aided by five undergraduate preservice teachers/researchers (PSTR). Faculty-researchers designed a qualitative phenomenological-inquiry based methodology to examine the PSTR perceptions regarding their respective research experiences with faculty. Triangulation of the data was sought from narrative text interview transcripts and response essays by PSTR prior to and after each respective study. Using content analysis techniques and coding, five themes emerged. PSTR reported an interest in the educational research topic and the need for positive relationships with faculty research mentors to begin and remain active with a research study. The results indicated PSTR valued …

Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio Jun 2016

Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology; something far beyond smartphones, cloud integration, or surgical microchip implantation. Utilizing the work of Ray Kurzweil, Nick Bostrom, and Steven Shaviro, this thesis investigates technology and artificial intelligence through the lens of the cinema. It does this by mapping contemporary concepts and the imagined worlds in film as an intersection of reality and fiction that examines issues of individual identity and alienation. I look at a non-linear timeline of films involving machine advancement, machine intelligence, and stages of post-human development; Elysium (2013) and Surrogates (2009) are about technology as an extension of the self, …

Anticancer Activities Of Resveratrol In Colorectal Cancer, Evelien Schaafsma, Tze-Chen Hsieh, Barbara B. Doonan, John T. Pinto, Joseph M. Wu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a dietary polyphenolic phytochemical that has demonstrated health benefits such as cardioprotection, the prevention of neurodegeneration and chemoprevention. Resveratrol has shown great potential in the prevention and treatment of carcinomas and clinical trials support resveratrol as anticancer compound in colorectal carcinoma. Colorectal cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths for both men and women in industrialized countries. Because of this widespread prevalence, identifying major risk factors and initiating colorectal screening procedures provide the distinct advantage for recognizing early disease and addressing treatable forms of CRC. Epidemiological studies of fruit and vegetable consumption in relationship to developing …

Notions Of Self And Nation In French Author-Aviators Of World War Ii: From Myth To Ambivalence, Christopher Kean Jun 2016

Notions Of Self And Nation In French Author-Aviators Of World War Ii: From Myth To Ambivalence, Christopher Kean

Doctoral Dissertations

The traditional image of wartime aviators in French culture is an idealized, mythical notion that is inextricably linked with an equally idealized and mythical notion of nationhood. The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – …

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Directly Targets Hepatocytes To Promote Inflammation In Chronic Kidney Disease, Saurav Singh Jun 2016

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Directly Targets Hepatocytes To Promote Inflammation In Chronic Kidney Disease, Saurav Singh

Open Access Dissertations

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem that affects 10-15% of the adult population worldwide and significantly increases the risk of death. Patients with CKD develop marked elevations in circulating levels of the phosphaturic hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which correlate with the stage of disease, and are associated with higher risk of mortality. Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of CKD. Circulating levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) are significantly elevated in CKD patients and increase with disease progression. This inflammatory burden has been suggested to be …

Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise Jun 2016

Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tracing the Material considers how James Joyce’s Ulysses, Virginia Woolf’s The Years, and Samuel Beckett’s Murphy represent material spaces and objects as a way of engaging with the fraught histories of England and Ireland. I argue that these three writers use spaces and objects to think through and critique nineteenth and early twentieth-century conflicts and transitions, particularly in the areas of empire, nationalism, gender, and family. Writing in the 1920s and 1930s, in the decline of British ascendency, the rise of the Irish Free State, and between the World Wars, these writers seek to interpret their history through …

Confessions Of A Media Literacy Scholar-Practitioner: Job Market Advantages, Research Agenda Challenges, And Theory-Driven Production, Christopher Boulton

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This essay explores how higher education’s move away from the liberal arts tradition of learning by thinking and towards more vocational “experiential” approaches has implications for media literacy educators’ career options, scholarly identities, and teaching strategies. Specifically, I consider my own negotiation of increasing administrative and student demands for “hands-on” production courses by confessing both my advantages on the job market and my post-hire challenges in articulating a clear research agenda. I then conclude with a case study of how I repurposed my scholar-practitioner identity and used critical theory to drive production by bringing film students into a cultural studies …

The Issues And Challenges Of Assessing Media Literacy Education, Evelien A. Schilder, Barbara B. Lockee, D. Patrick Saxon

Journal of Media Literacy Education

In the media literacy literature, the challenges associated with assessment have, to a great extent, been ignored. The purpose of this mixed methods study was therefore to explore the views of media literacy scholars and professionals on assessment challenges through qualitative interviews (n = 10) with the intent of using this information to develop a quantitative survey to validate and extend the qualitative findings with a larger sample of media literacy professionals and scholars from around the world (n = 133). The findings offer an overview of the assessment challenges encountered by these participants.

Event As Spiritual Pilgrimage: A Case Study Of The ‘Cherish’ Christian Women’S Conference, Ruth Dowson Jun 2016

Event As Spiritual Pilgrimage: A Case Study Of The ‘Cherish’ Christian Women’S Conference, Ruth Dowson

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In examining an aspect of the eventization of faith (Pfadenhauer, 2010), this article considers an annual women’s conference, ‘Cherish’, a church-led event. Due to the pressures on the space available in its former home in the organising church’s campus, the growth in the event’s popularity has resulted in the church organisers moving the event venue to a commercial arena. The research questions the extent to which this popular conference meets the criteria of the academic characteristics of pilgrimage, and aims to clarify to what extent the thousands of women who attend the Cherish conference experience the event - and their …

Mixing Up Everyday Life - Uncovering Sufficiency Practices Through Designerly Tools, Miriam Lahusen, Susanne Ritzmann, Florian Samentinger, Gesche Joost, Lars-Arvid Brischke

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Sustainability and its subsequent transformations are a global challenge. In this paper, the focus lies on demonstrating a way to break down these global issues into its micro-elements which can be dealt with in the individual’s private sphere. Everyday life has always been where practices and its inherent conflicts between ‹rational and irrational› can be rooted. Design can provide the tools to make the familiar visible and the intuitive communicable through questioning the ‹normal› and offering alternative scenarios. We add to this, that a mixture of participatory and qualitative methods can guide an investigation, producing an array of multi-faceted information. …

Towards Translation Design A New Paradigm For Design Research, Giovanni Baule Jun 2016

Towards Translation Design A New Paradigm For Design Research, Giovanni Baule

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper we explore the concept of translation, starting from the assumption that it constitutes an essential reference for design culture. We assume that a designer (and in particular a communication designer) is a “translator”, since he realises a continuous process of mediation, transfer and re-transcription between the systems of departure and arrival. This perspective leads us to suppose that the application of the “translational paradigm” within the design domain can generate new design sensitivities and new research opportunities into language and into the processes of transferral between different supports and media. We believe that design has specific affinities …

“Dis - Course Is Killer!” Educating The Critically Reflective Designer, Veronik Kelly Jun 2016

“Dis - Course Is Killer!” Educating The Critically Reflective Designer, Veronik Kelly

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design practice knowledge is culturally and socially mediated, and historically situated. It is a discourse. Discourse, when conceived as a social practice, is simultaneously a method of understanding and signifying the world, a mode of acting upon the world and other persons, and also a means of transforming these operations (Fairclough, 1993). The significance of conceiving of design as a discursive practice is that it draws attention to the ways in which design knowledge is (re)produced by a particular culture and tied to human conduct. In these terms, a critical approach to analysing discourse as a social practice can be …

The project combined interdisciplinary expertise to investigate how UK citizens create and manage online digital identities at three significant life transitions, aiming to deliver social, cultural and technical findings to inform policy- making and service innovation for enhancing digital literacy in online self- representation. The picture book communicated empirical insights through the presentation of multi-perspectival, fictional scenarios about individuals’ experiences at the life transitions studied. We deployed the book with our project …

A Case Based Discussion On The Role Of Design Competences In Social Innovation, Tamami Komatsu, Manuela Celi, Francesca Rizzo, Alessandro Deserti Jun 2016

A Case Based Discussion On The Role Of Design Competences In Social Innovation, Tamami Komatsu, Manuela Celi, Francesca Rizzo, Alessandro Deserti

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Thus far, many contributions in the field of design have described design’s role in the life cycle of a successful Social Innovation (SI). Design, in fact, has been proposed by many authors to be the most suitable approach to developing SI initiatives from their start-up to release. In particular, some authors have proposed Design Thinking as the best methodology for the development of new SIs; while others, promote Participatory Design as the best method to support SIs, heralding its process of collaboration, networking and coproduction. Nevertheless, many research results have demonstrated that the need to find a balance between social …

User Design : Constructions Of The “User” In The History Of Design Research, Theodora Vardouli Jun 2016

User Design : Constructions Of The “User” In The History Of Design Research, Theodora Vardouli

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the past 50 years of design research, the “user” has been consistently invoked as a measure of good design and as driver of design decisions. As scholars have variously recognized, the focus of design has in turn been displaced fromphysical objects to relationships between things/environments and their future users/occupants. In this paper I identify, compare, and critically analyse different techniques for anticipating or understanding such relationships drawing from original material produced in the context of the design methods movement, the Design Research Society (DRS), and the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). I combine this material with histories of ergonomics …

Responsibility In Design: Applying The Philosophy Of Gilbert Simondon, Sander Mulder Jun 2016

Responsibility In Design: Applying The Philosophy Of Gilbert Simondon, Sander Mulder

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The notion of technical mentality and transductive reasoning described by the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon is applied on a concrete design case in order to investigate responsibility and design. The design case relates to the development of a portable artificial kidney. The historic invention of the artificial kidney is woven into the philosophy of Simondon in order to mobilize his work. For designers, the risk of reduction is at stake when applying the technical mentality to domains beyond the technical such as the psycho-social. This risk can be avoided by transductive reasoning, i.e. reasoning by means of analogy, but this …

A User Centred Approach To Developing An Actionable Visualisation For ‘Balance Health’, Shruti Grover, Simon Johnson, Ross Atkin, Chris Mcginley

DRS Biennial Conference Series

More than a third of people over the age of 65 fall every year in the UK (Department of Health, 2009). General gait problems and weakness are amongst the most common specific precipitating causes for falls. (Rubenstein, 2006). Qualitative research conducted by the investigators (Jan - May 2014) indicates that people do not consider balance health to be an actionable component of their overall health. This is because they do not have the vocabularies or tools to objectively define it on an everyday basis. We designed an application which can be used to quantify postural sway in the home setting, …

Critically Exploring The Development Of A Conceptual Framework For Building Innovative Brands, Xinya You, David Hands Jun 2016

Critically Exploring The Development Of A Conceptual Framework For Building Innovative Brands, Xinya You, David Hands

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The success of today's brands increasingly relies on consumer-centred co- innovation. In this context, brands must play a role that is more proactive than their traditional one of serving as a communication tool. Based on an extensive review of the literature, this paper defines the new role of brands as a driving force for innovation and, to illustrate the potential of that new role, proposes a conceptual framework for building innovative brands that comprises the following five dimensions: (1) the command centre—the brand management team; (2) the strategic vision—the context of building innovative brands; (3) the organisational foundation—the organisation's innovation …

Design Research In The East – At Universities And The Board Of Industrial Design Of The Gdr Between The 1960s And 1990, Sylvia Wölfel, Christian Wölfel Jun 2016

Design Research In The East – At Universities And The Board Of Industrial Design Of The Gdr Between The 1960s And 1990, Sylvia Wölfel, Christian Wölfel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper focuses on design research in the GDR. There, the Board of Industrial Design (Amt für industrielle Formgestaltung, AIF), a commission reporting directly to the government, promoted and subsidized design research that was adequate to the policy of the board. Besides, the (state-owned) industry, universities as well as art and design schools closely cooperated on design research projects. The economic design policy of the GDR has largely been developed in the PhD thesis of the board's head Martin Kelm, who pursued his functionalist approach to design at different levels. On the other hand, there was critique and a public …

Juxtaposing Chinese And Western Representational Principles: New Design Methods For Information Graphics In The Field Of Intercultural Communication, Ruedi Baur, Ulrike Felsing Jun 2016

Juxtaposing Chinese And Western Representational Principles: New Design Methods For Information Graphics In The Field Of Intercultural Communication, Ruedi Baur, Ulrike Felsing

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This article examines knowledge graphics from the Chinese and Western cultures, which, in the course of globalization, are being increasingly loosened from their original cultural references. If it is assumed that at most pictographs, but not complex graphics, are universally understandable, “visual translations” must be developed for knowledge graphics if we are to transfer them into another cultural reference system. Using the example of a widespread graphic form-the tree diagram-the research presented here will explain specific representational principles and the cultural concepts on which they are based. Here, on the visible surface, formal correlations can indeed be observed. However, if …
