Tau Prion Strains In Cells, Mice, And Patients, David Winland Sanders Aug 2016

Tau Prion Strains In Cells, Mice, And Patients, David Winland Sanders

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Prion-like propagation of tau aggregation may underlie the stereotyped progression of pathology along neuronal networks in neurodegenerative tauopathies such as Alzheimer’s disease. It has become increasingly clear that unique conformations (“strains”) of prion protein (PrP) link aggregate structure to clinical phenotypes in human prion diseases. Intriguingly, vast phenotypic diversity in pathological and clinical presentation is also observed in tauopathies. The mechanisms that account for this phenotypic diversity are completely unknown. During my dissertation work, I put forward and tested the hypothesis that distinct tau amyloid conformations (or “strains”) are responsible for unique tauopathies. First, I found that in experimental models, …

Lactating In St. Louis: Attachments, Technologies, And Disparities, Sarah Sobonya Aug 2016

Lactating In St. Louis: Attachments, Technologies, And Disparities, Sarah Sobonya

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uses the concept of attachments to explicate women’s breastfeeding practices and beliefs in the racially and economically segregated St. Louis, Missouri region. My analysis examines the interplay among attachments at three levels: women’s intrapersonal attachments to specific concepts of self; their attachments to the values and priorities of social groups; and attachments they form in response to larger structural and ideological forces in society. I argue that racial and socioeconomic disparities are manifested through breastfeeding praxis, so that breastfeeding serves as a lens through which these oppressions and disparities can be more fully viewed. To illuminate this, I …

A structured questionnaire was prepared for the purpose of collection of data and the data were collected using Job Satisfaction …

Cultural Ambassadors: American Academics In The Soviet Union, 1958-1991, Kayla Brooke Hester Aug 2016

Cultural Ambassadors: American Academics In The Soviet Union, 1958-1991, Kayla Brooke Hester

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the emerging Cold War conflict, American policymakers adopted cultural diplomacy as a permanent component of US foreign policy for the first time. In an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the worlds’ people, American leaders utilized international cultural outreach, through methods such as exchanges of students, teachers, and scientists, traveling exhibitions, radio and television broadcasts, publications, and tourism, among others. In recent decades, many historians have begun to explore the significance of these efforts. However, none of these works have examined the experience of those individuals who actually participated in the exchanges. This work begins …

A Horticultural Therapy Program For The Elderly: Effects On Cognition, Quality Of Life, And Loneliness, Mariah Ruth Baird

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies suggest there are numerous benefits of horticultural therapy programs. The current study explored the benefits of a horticultural therapy program with elderly populations at two facilities in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Fifteen participants attended a 2-hour session on horticulture techniques once a week for four weeks. Using a pretest to posttest study design, changes in participants’ cognition, quality of life, and loneliness were assessed. The pretest was administered verbally by the researcher before the first session and the posttest, including a series of questions about satisfaction with the program, was administered after the last session. Items on each assessment …

在不明不暗的虚妄中寻找青春 : 当代中国“80 后”非政府组织工作者的价值观和行为转变研究, Guoyuan Sun Aug 2016

在不明不暗的虚妄中寻找青春 : 当代中国“80 后”非政府组织工作者的价值观和行为转变研究, Guoyuan Sun

Lingnan Theses

Exposing The “Shadow Side”: Female-Female Competition In Jane Austen’S Emma, Melissa M. Lyman Aug 2016

Exposing The “Shadow Side”: Female-Female Competition In Jane Austen’S Emma, Melissa M. Lyman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Many critics have examined the shifting nature of female friendship in Jane Austen’s Emma from cultural and historical angles. However, a comprehensive scientific analysis of female-female alliance and competition in the novel remains incomplete. The Literary Darwinist approach considers the motivations of fictional characters from an evolutionary perspective, focusing primarily on human cognition and behaviors linked to reproductive success, social control, and survival. While overt physical displays of male competition are conspicuous in the actions of the human species and those of their closest primate relatives, female aggression is often brandished psychologically and indirectly, which makes for a much more …

Combustion, Catriona Sandilands Aug 2016

Combustion, Catriona Sandilands

The Goose

Match, wood, flame. Pyrocultures, settler colonial pyrophobia. Internal combustion. Wildfire. Petrocapitalist immolation. This short photo essay reflects on fire as simultaneously a sensuous phenomenon of everyday life and an entity that, because of both its presence and its absence in particular formations, makes worlds. To be aware, both corporeally and politically, of our involvement in pyric practices and regimes allows us to begin to imagine what it might mean to understand and change our relations to fire as part of a larger project of energetic transformation: bodily, socially, politically.

Beyond The Lone Hero: Providing Supports For New Teachers In High-Needs Schools, Sarah Elizabeth Barrett, Donna Ford, Carl James Aug 2016

Beyond The Lone Hero: Providing Supports For New Teachers In High-Needs Schools, Sarah Elizabeth Barrett, Donna Ford, Carl James

Occasional Paper Series

This essay examines the activities and challenges encountered in a partnership between a faculty of education and a local school board in Toronto, Canada. The goal was to address concerns over a 40% drop-out rate amongst Black students in the Toronto District School Board.

Teachers were to identify areas of concern, and to use university resources to investigate and improve work with students. Initially, findings were disappointing, teachers often felt isolated working on their own, and some administrators perceived the project as disruptive to the overall running of the school.

Faculty came to the realization that to help support their …

How Do You Define The Color Line?: Exploring The Impacts And Perceptions Of Racial Representation In Brazilian Telenovelas, Kelsey R. Flitter Aug 2016

How Do You Define The Color Line?: Exploring The Impacts And Perceptions Of Racial Representation In Brazilian Telenovelas, Kelsey R. Flitter

Open Access Theses

This thesis explores the impact and perceptions surrounding racial representation in Brazilian society, using three modern Brazilian telenovelas as the microcosm for the study. Beginning in 1996 with the release of Xica da Silva, followed by Duas Caras in 2007, and ending with Malhação in 2014, each telenovela is examined in relation to the political context in which it was released, a thorough content analysis focusing on prevalent themes, and a look into the audience’s perception of these programs through user generated YouTube comments. This thesis touches on the connections between traditional forms of media such as television, together with …

Classroom Communities Of Practice, Angela Marie Muse Aug 2016

Classroom Communities Of Practice, Angela Marie Muse

Dissertations

Are classrooms preparing students with the literacy skills they need for school, work, and life? When students don't meet expectations, educators tend to seek answers in innovative programs or research-based practices that promise success. The practices teachers use, however, are neither selected nor enacted in a vacuum. To fully understand what is happening in a classroom, one needs to consider not only the instructional practices teachers use but also the context in which teachers select and enact these practices and the effect these practices have on our students. The impetus for this study came from a broader desire to dig …

The Role Of Intuition In Philosophical Practice, Tinghao Wang Aug 2016

The Role Of Intuition In Philosophical Practice, Tinghao Wang

Lingnan Theses

This dissertation examines the recent arguments against the “Centrality” thesis—the thesis that intuition plays central evidential roles in philosophical inquiry—and their implications for the negative program in experimental philosophy. Two types of objections to Centrality are discussed. First, there are some objections which turn out to only work against Centrality when it is taken as a potential form of philosophical exceptionalism. I respond by showing that negative experimental philosophy doesn’t need the assumption that philosophy is distinctive in its reliance on intuitions. Second, there are some objections which turn out to be related to some particular view concerning the nature …

Gender Differences In Attributions Of Shame, Guilt, Pride, And Being Unafraid Of Criticism Among Chinese Children, Charles Matthew Stapleton Aug 2016

Gender Differences In Attributions Of Shame, Guilt, Pride, And Being Unafraid Of Criticism Among Chinese Children, Charles Matthew Stapleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Children not only experience shame, guilt, pride, and a sense of being unafraid of criticism themselves, but they also make attributions concerning other children’s experiences of these emotions. This dissertation tested the hypothesis that children’s attributions of shame, guilt, pride, and being unafraid of criticism would be influenced by the gender of the perceiver and the gender of the target of the attributions. Three hundred and twenty-four children living in rural and urban China nominated classroom peers to whom they attributed normatively appropriate shame, guilt, and pride. They also nominated children who they thought were unafraid of criticism. Generalized mixed …

All Pbl Starts Here: The Problem, Woei Hung Aug 2016

All Pbl Starts Here: The Problem, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

One essential piece of implementing of PBL is the problem. There have been calls from practitioners in the PBL field for a systematic process for designing effective PBL problems. Yet, the research efforts to explore, develop, and test PBL problem design methods or processes are still sparse. From an instructional designer and researcher’s perspective, I deem problem design to be the first step to ensure not only the proper affordance of the learning goal but also the students’ overall learning process in PBL implementation. PBL problem design is the area I have studied most consistently and passionately. In this paper, …

Latinotwitter: Discourses Of Latino Civic Engagement In Social Media, Alison N. Novak, Kristine C. Johnson, Manuel Pontes Aug 2016

Latinotwitter: Discourses Of Latino Civic Engagement In Social Media, Alison N. Novak, Kristine C. Johnson, Manuel Pontes

College of Communication & Creative Arts Departmental Research

Twitter, like other social media platforms, has been identified as a space for cultural groups to debate political ideologies, engage civically, and even form action strategies for social change. Since 2014, the #LatinoTwitter hashtag has been used by Latino users for these purposes. Despite the popularity of the hashtag, few studies have examined it or its users. This study provides the results of a discourse analysis of the 31,000 tweets from 2014–2016 that use the hashtag. The findings indicate Twitter has become a popular platform for Latinos to debate political issues, find parity between ethnic communities, and even promote Latino-centered …

Transforming Personal Narrative Through The Art Of Dolls: An Arts-Based Inquiry Into The Power Of Heuristic Expansion, Kelly Ann Martinez Aug 2016

Transforming Personal Narrative Through The Art Of Dolls: An Arts-Based Inquiry Into The Power Of Heuristic Expansion, Kelly Ann Martinez

Action Research Projects

The basis of this arts-based research project was to explore the importance of personal narrative and integration of new thought through doll making. Through the exploration of the history of dolls, a new understanding of the importance of narrative, visual culture, material culture, and pop culture arose. The body of work presented considers this redefining of personal narrative through the creation, documentation, and reflection of doll making, over the course of six months. It is through the dolls and accompanying narratives that recognition of a shift in conceptualization occurs. The research methods used were A/R/Tography and apprenticeship with the Professional …

Performing, Sensing, Being: Queer Identity In Everyday Life, Justin J. Rudnick Aug 2016

Performing, Sensing, Being: Queer Identity In Everyday Life, Justin J. Rudnick

Communication Studies Department Publications

Drawing from performance, affect, and queer theories, I explore how queer identity is storied, performed, and sensed in everyday life. I access performance and sensory ethnographic practices to examine how queer persons “do” their identities on a daily basis. I draw from data collected through ethnographic participation in a queer-friendly district of Columbus, Ohio in addition to in-depth interviews with fourteen self-identified queer persons I met through my fieldwork. My approach privileges observations and reflections of mundane moments of everyday life to position queer identity as a routine, repetitive, habitual, and otherwise performative practice. I question the emphasis on verbal …

Osteogenic Differentiation In Preosteoblast Mc3t3-E1 Cells Induced By Beta Tricalcium Phosphate Bioglass Composite, Chien-Ning Yao

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The use of bioactive material from bioceramic and composite components to support bone cell and tissue growth is an interesting area of medical field. Calcium phosphate ceramics are biocompatible and may develop interactions with human living bone tissues. Bioactive calcium phosphates, beta -tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), have been intensively investigated as the cell scaffold for bone tissue engineering because it is well recognized that they are compatible to natural bone tissue and osteoconductive. In this research we will discuss two types of biomaterial with different kind of composition—(a) a cement type and (b)a scaffold type of biomaterial that can be applied …

Otherness And Belonging In “Democratic Empires”: The Syrian Diaspora And Transatlantic Discourses Of Identity, 1890s-1930s, Bryan A. Garrett

History Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation examines the arguments that Syrians in diaspora at the turn of the twentieth century used in constructing their group identity. It traces the transnational and transimperial discourses that centered on the pack-peddler mythology, or rather, it traces the diaspora intelligentsia’s narrative for the business diaspora. Their narrative framed the business elites as the quintessence of upward mobility in the modern world. The historiography of this subfield has been separated into two camps: one that takes for granted the assimilation of the business class into Western societies, and the other that offers a more critical rendering of Syrian migrant …

Superheroes And Social Action: Reproduction, Recurrence, And Recognition In The Superhero Genre, Max M. Renner Aug 2016

Superheroes And Social Action: Reproduction, Recurrence, And Recognition In The Superhero Genre, Max M. Renner

Open Access Theses

Rhetorical genre analysis examines genre as social action and is primarily concerned with the experiences of individual users (Miller, 1984). The genres that rhetorical genre scholarship takes up are typically functional genres or genres in which individuals have direct means of utilizing and modifying a genre. This focus on functional genres makes sense in terms of the tradition’s interest in user experience and reciprocity. This project seeks to examine the potential implications rhetorical genre analysis has for vernacular genres which, for the most part, have remained the domain of literary scholarship due to their focus on structural, formal elements.

This …
