Ecocomposition As Writing Curriculum: An Ecological Approach For Writing Program Administrators And Composition Instructors, Erin Renee Lord Kunz Jan 2016

Ecocomposition As Writing Curriculum: An Ecological Approach For Writing Program Administrators And Composition Instructors, Erin Renee Lord Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation forwards an argument for an ecologically-based composition and rhetoric curriculum that also emphasizes the best practices established by the Council of Writing Program Administration, particularly the writing process. I concentrate on how a writing program administrator can utilize ecological literacy to navigate her own experience in a new place and also how themes of ecological literacy can be applied to the writing program itself. Based on personal experiences as well as literature that establishes the need for best practices in composition and rhetoric curriculum, I argue that ecological composition, or ecocomposition, can assist in implementing an ecological writing …

Mitt Romney In Denver: “Obamacare” As Ideological Enthymeme, Justin Ward Kirk Jan 2016

Mitt Romney In Denver: “Obamacare” As Ideological Enthymeme, Justin Ward Kirk

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This paper argues that surface-level analysis of political argument fails to explain the effectiveness of ideological enthymemes, particularly within the context of presidential debates. This paper uses the first presidential debate of the 2012 election as a case study for the use of “Obamacare” as an ideological enthymeme. The choice of a terminological system limits and shapes the argumentative choices afforded the candidate. Presidential debates provide a unique context within which to examine the interaction of ideological constraints and argument due to their relatively committed and ideologically homogenous audiences.

A Critical Analysis Of Acculturation, Sociocultural Pressures, Body Image, And Disordered Eating Among Asian Immigrants In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Lexa Watroba, Jayne Eckley, Arlette Ngoubene.Atioky Jan 2016

A Critical Analysis Of Acculturation, Sociocultural Pressures, Body Image, And Disordered Eating Among Asian Immigrants In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Lexa Watroba, Jayne Eckley, Arlette Ngoubene.Atioky

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Asian immigrants are an emerging ethnic minority in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Previous literature has examined how immigration to Western countries and the sociocultural pressures associated with a new host country, particularly the United States, impacts Asian immigrants’ body image and dietary regimen. However, there has been less of a focus on the level of acculturation of Asian immigrants in Canada and Australia and its relationship with body image dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and sociocultural pressures. The paucity of cross-cultural analysis and the inconclusive knowledge of how acculturation and sociocultural pressures may serve as predictors of poor body image …

Benefits And Challenges Of Qualitative Methodologies In Cross-Cultural Psychology Studies, Rafaela De Quadros Rigoni Jan 2016

Benefits And Challenges Of Qualitative Methodologies In Cross-Cultural Psychology Studies, Rafaela De Quadros Rigoni

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Qualitative research has been considered increasingly valuable for cross-cultural psychology studies, but its contributions and challenges to the field remain under discussed. This chapter does that by analysing a qualitative study which compares interpretive beliefs and behaviour of street-level workers from health, social, and law enforcement sectors working with policies for crack cocaine and heroin in the cities of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Porto Alegre, Brazil. Challenges and contributions for the use of qualitative methodologies in cross-cultural studies were found in different research stages. Challenges were centred on how to balance empirical closure and analytical distance. Benefits relate to a wider …

Culture + Behaviour + Comparison = Cross-Cultural Psychology, John W. Berry Jan 2016

Culture + Behaviour + Comparison = Cross-Cultural Psychology, John W. Berry

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

For many years I have advocated the view that cross-cultural psychology should have the following characteristics: it begins with an ethnographic search to select those settings that may provide the cultural and ecological contexts that are theoretically-relevant to the development of the particular behaviour of interest; this is followed by advancing hypotheses that link the context to the behaviour; then fieldwork is undertaken to further examine these cultural attributes, and to carry out the assessment of the behaviour of individuals. These activities are carried out across contexts for three reasons: (i) in order to gain sufficient variation in the cultural …

Sookie's Place(S): New Roadways Into The South Of The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Sarah Holder Jan 2016

Sookie's Place(S): New Roadways Into The South Of The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Sarah Holder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Charlaine Harris’ bestselling paranormal romance series, the Southern Vampire Mysteries is only beginning to be understood as more than a cultural phenomenon, but rather as a highly politicized and critical work of fiction that shines through genre designations such as romance, mystery, and fantasy. Much of this praise can be attributed to the series’ heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, who gracefully traverses boundaries that divide what are arguably racial and ethnic groups ever at odds with one another as they share political and social space. Her adventures therefore pose significant questions concerning diversity, equality, and nationalism, but more obviously they ask what …

If There Wasn’T Farming, Somebody Wouldn’T Eat: Small Scale Agriculture, Community Autonomy, And Food Sovereignty In Mississippi, Irene Van Riper Jan 2016

If There Wasn’T Farming, Somebody Wouldn’T Eat: Small Scale Agriculture, Community Autonomy, And Food Sovereignty In Mississippi, Irene Van Riper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical context of small scale farming and grassroots social movements in Mississippi’s history, and investigates the ways small farmers and community advocates are drawing upon their land-based heritage and local knowledge systems to create community-controlled food systems in dialogue with broader national and global conversations about sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty. Employing a multi-scalar method of analysis, the research studies issues from the perspective of individuals, communities, institutions, as well as national and transnational systems. The work draws from previous scholarship in environmental studies, agroecology, critical race studies, rural sociology, critical historiography, agrifood studies, and regional …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Culture In Contemporary China, Guojuan Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For a long time, topics on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender(LGBT) are regarded as taboo in China. On June 26, 2015, the United States passed the same-sex marriage law promoted an intense discussion in Chinese society. Lots of LGBT people started to fight for their rights and many netizens also expressed a desire for the legalization of same-sex marriage in China. However, is China really ready for legalizing the law? This paper gives an answer to this question from an historical view.

Representation Of The American South In Marvel Comics, 1963-2016, Katherine Gill Jan 2016

Representation Of The American South In Marvel Comics, 1963-2016, Katherine Gill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My work tracks the role of the American South and Southern characters in Marvel Comics, from 1963 to 2016. This thesis spring from a simple question: how stereotypical does this Northern industry portray the American South? To achieve this goal, I read a lot of comics, applying literary theory (such as Patricia Yeager and Tara McPherson) as well as American cultural studies (1980s televangelism and the history of human trafficking in America) to my findings. After reading multiple comic books from multiple sources, I settled on four different texts, each with a unique approach to portraying the South: the portrayal …

My Faith In The Constitution Is Whole: Barbara Jordan Signifies On Scriptures, Robin L. Owens Jan 2016

My Faith In The Constitution Is Whole: Barbara Jordan Signifies On Scriptures, Robin L. Owens

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is a critical investigation of the engagements of scriptures in the life and speeches of U.S. Congresswoman Barbara C. Jordan (1936–1996). I engage in a research methodology that utilizes critical historical, auto/biographical, literary, and rhetorical analyses. My research agenda is to explain how scriptures work and are used by Barbara Jordan to illustrate an example of a larger phenomenon of scripturalizing and scripturalization outside of the context of institutional religion. In order to give a fuller context to Barbara Jordan’s rhetorical strategies, as an African American woman, I first consider the lives, speeches and use of scriptures of …

The Unwritten Rules About Breaking The Rules: Collective Frames And The Legitimation Of Contested Practices Within Consumption Communities, Nicholas J. Pendarvis Jan 2016

The Unwritten Rules About Breaking The Rules: Collective Frames And The Legitimation Of Contested Practices Within Consumption Communities, Nicholas J. Pendarvis

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the legitimation of contested consumption practices in the context of a highly competitive online gaming community. Building on prior research, which has relied on an institutional perspective to shed light on how perceptions of legitimacy form and evolve in the marketplace, this research explores the role of legitimacy at the level of consumption communities to highlight the ways in which consumers socially construct “collective frames” which give meaning to action and organize these communities. In the empirical context studied here, online gamers have incorporated user-created modifications (e.g., modified game accessories, or "mods") into game play over the …

Becoming South: Postmodern Southern Distinction, Melody Knight Pritchard Jan 2016

Becoming South: Postmodern Southern Distinction, Melody Knight Pritchard

Theses and Dissertations

Within Southern studies scholarship, much has been said (or told) about "the South" and southern distinction or essentialism. No one can define what, exactly, the South or southernness is, but we are determined to spend much energy and ink writing about it, anyway. Since the late 20th century, southern studies scholarship has largely followed a discourse-focused trajectory, and the popular (or at least the loudest) answers to questions about the South's distinction have often been angry “nos,” critical rejections of a "special" South that functions—or even exists—outside of discourse. Though this line of inquiry is well-intentioned, it has done little …

Anders Breivik And Elliot Rodger: Violence, Communication, And The Mediated Sphere., Walter Anthony Lucken Iv Jan 2016

Anders Breivik And Elliot Rodger: Violence, Communication, And The Mediated Sphere., Walter Anthony Lucken Iv

Wayne State University Theses

The “mass shooting” has become a major hallmark of everyday news and discussions in mass media. Through the lens of two specific cases, this research situates the mass shooting within a few preexisting historical continuities and disciplines. The mass shooting is read as a communicative media event, and is considered from the perspective of mass media proliferation, political violence, discourse, semiotics, and turn of the century cultural antagonisms. The methods employed herein are textual analysis, rhetorical analysis, and post-Marxian models of historical causation.

The mass shooting is an outgrowth of global consolidation and proliferation of mass media. The mass shootings …

The project goal was to describe the training of family medicine physicians through observation and interviews with resident and faculty physicians. The project investigated discourses and practices around healing. The aims of this study included: (1) to identify and describe the educational processes in a residency training program towards professional socialization of residents into family medicine. Res Extra Commercium And The Barriers Faced When Seeking The Repatriation And Return Of Potent Cultural Objects: A Transsystemic Critical Post-Colonial Approach, Sara Gwendolyn Ross Jan 2016

Res Extra Commercium And The Barriers Faced When Seeking The Repatriation And Return Of Potent Cultural Objects: A Transsystemic Critical Post-Colonial Approach, Sara Gwendolyn Ross

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The repatriation and return of objects of cultural value are often linked to decolonization projects and efforts to repair past wrongs suffered as a result of colonialism. Yet significant barriers hinder these efforts. These barriers primarily take the shape of time limitations, diverging conceptions of property and ownership, the high costs involved, and the domestic export and cultural heritage laws of both the source country and the destination country. I argue that these barriers are relics of colonialism that replicate and perpetuate the continued imposition of Eurocentric and Western legal notions and values on subaltern source countries and source indigenous …

A Vehicle Of Expression, Cristian Garcia Jan 2016

A Vehicle Of Expression, Cristian Garcia

CMC Senior Theses

This senior thesis studies the evolution and ideals of several populations in Los Angeles through the lens of car culture. The automobile is a symbol of expression and upon analyzing it, a great deal can be revealed about its owner. Los Angeles is home to the hot rodding, lowriding, and import tuning car movements. All three major car cultures were born from a marginalized youth population. The three movements shed light on the sentiments and assimilation process of the various ethnic communities that created the car culture. This essay will show how each movement not only influenced one another, but …

Representing Autistic Masculinity: Hegemonic Gender Performances In Contemporary Autism Films, James Samuel Kizer Jan 2016

Representing Autistic Masculinity: Hegemonic Gender Performances In Contemporary Autism Films, James Samuel Kizer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

While longstanding notions of autism have conceptualized it as medicalized disability, recent scholarship has advanced theories of autism as cultural production; in other words, autism may be better understood as a synthesis of medical science, media portrayals, and societal attitudes rather than the product of any of these arenas individually. Academic inquiry into the intersection of autism and gender, though, remains largely underdeveloped. Work has been done theorizing how autistic people understand their gender but little exists regarding how cultural apparatuses actually produce it. My study, then, addresses this gap through examining media representations of autism, specifically autistic masculinity in …

Barriers To Career Advancement: Asian Americans In The U.S. Aerospace Industry, Rahul Dixit Jan 2016

Barriers To Career Advancement: Asian Americans In The U.S. Aerospace Industry, Rahul Dixit

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the lack of Historically Underrepresented Population (HUP) inclusion in management and leadership roles. Specifically, why Asian Americans (AA) do not reach executive levels in southern California aerospace and defense companies (SCDCs). The AA members of HUP are among the highest educated and display model-behavior characteristics, yet, somehow do not thrive in management assignments. The U.S. defense industry has operated in a single-customer market, and that customer (the U.S. Government) is imposing social change agendas, to establish a leadership that is reflective of the company’s diversity. Exacerbating the underrepresentation of AAs is a shrinking domestic defense appropriations …

Promoting Resilience In Latino/A Youth: An Examination Of Resilience Research And Its Implications For The Developmental Outcomes Of U.S.-Born Latino/A Youth, Darlene R. Moreno Jan 2016

Promoting Resilience In Latino/A Youth: An Examination Of Resilience Research And Its Implications For The Developmental Outcomes Of U.S.-Born Latino/A Youth, Darlene R. Moreno

Theses and Dissertations

Resilience research has done much to shift attention away from a deficit perspective in mental health theory and practice to a more strength-based approach. Despite often being cited as one of the populations most at risk for negative developmental outcomes, some Latino/a youth demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. To further expand knowledge and understanding of resilience and protective processes among U.S.-born Latino/a youth, the current study sought to integrate existing findings related to protective factors identified in research associated with parenting as well as other areas of development with those being generated in the field of resilience with …

Suicide Among Latina/O Adolescents, Mariela Vega

Theses and Dissertations

This critical analysis of the literature is a comprehensive review of the available literature on suicide within the Latina/o population. Specifically, the literature was examined in an effort to identify the risk factors that identify Latina/o adolescents as one of the most vulnerable ethnic groups that engage in suicidal behaviors as well as most significant protective factors that shield this group from suicide and suicidal behavior. One hundred ninety-two articles were critically analyzed and evaluated to identify strengths, weakness, and gaps in the literature particularly as it relates to future research. Research findings revealed that although Latina/o adolescents may be …

Global Leadership: Strategies And Practices To Develop Intercultural Skills, Edward Van Luinen Jan 2016

Global Leadership: Strategies And Practices To Develop Intercultural Skills, Edward Van Luinen

Theses and Dissertations

Globalization is a transformational change phenomenon that is significantly and rapidly impacting today’s organizations, leaders, and people. In turn, the role of the global business leader has become quite complex, and Fortune 500 organizations are facing a dearth of global leaders capable of addressing today’s business leadership challenges. In response to this challenge, one particular strategy for developing global leaders focuses on building intercultural skills. However, given the complexity of their roles, global leaders may face difficulties in developing these skills. By first acknowledging these obstacles global leaders can then, through their work, develop effective strategies and practices in the …

Modification Of The "Gold Standard"? Leadership Selection From An Attachment Lens: A Critical Analysis., Rebecca Pearlstein

Theses and Dissertations

The demands of corporate America are placing increased pressures on supervisors and executives to create and manage optimal organizational cultures. Relational capabilities and emotional intelligence have come to the fore as an essential component of effective and successful business leadership. When leaders are unable to create positive relationships with their working teams and navigate the day-to-day stressors of the workplace, the costs can be significant. In addition to losses in productivity, absenteeism, stress, burnout, and demoralization all take a heavy toll. From the perspective of attachment theory, the ability to connect with others, cope with stress, and engage in productive …
