Molecular Identification Of Rhizosphere Trichoderma Spp. And Their Antagonistic Impact Against Some Plant Pathogenic Fungi, Safaa Al-Deen Ahmed Shanter Al-Qaysi, Adel Hamdan Alwan

Baghdad Science Journal

The main aim of this study was to molecular identification and determine the antagonistic impact of rhizosphere Trichoderma spp. against some phytopathogenic fungi, including (Magnaporthe grisea) pyricularia oryzae, Rhizoctonia solani and Macrophomina phasolina. Four Trichoderma isolates were isolated from rhizosphere soils of the different host plants in different locations of Egyptian governorates. The morphological characterization of isolated Trichoderma as well as using of (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) ribosomal gene sequence acquisition and data analyses. By comparing the results of DNA sequences of ITS region, the fungi represented one isolate were positively identified as T. asperellum (1 isolate T1) and one as T. longibrachiatum …

Session A-2: She Fought For The Fatherland: Gender, War And Memory In The Soviet Union Subject: History, Kitty Lam

Professional Learning Day

John Keegan once wrote, “Warfare is…the one human activity…from which women have always and everywhere stood apart. Women…do not fight…and they never in any military sense, fight men” (John Keegan, A History of Warfare, 76). Yet in the Second World War, an estimated 120,000 Soviet women served in combat roles. This presentation uses photographs of women in combat and images of Soviet war monuments and to help students reconsider wartime division of gender roles. It also prompts students to examine how women’s contributions to war were commemorated in a country that supposedly championed gender equality.

On The Poverty, Rise, And Demise Of International Criminal Law, Tiphaine Dickson Mar 2016

On The Poverty, Rise, And Demise Of International Criminal Law, Tiphaine Dickson

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation in four essays critically examines the emergence of international criminal courts: their international political underpinnings, context, and the impact of their political production in relation to liberal legalism, liberal political theory, and history. The essays conceive of international criminal legal bodies both as political projects at their inception and as institutions that deny their own political provenance. The work is primarily one of political theory at the intersection of history, international relations, international criminal law, and the politics of memory. The first essay questions Nuremberg's legacy on the United States' exceptionalist view of international law and its deviant …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Content Analysis On Media Framing Of Incarceration, Shannon Elise Ardamica-Hall Mar 2016

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: A Content Analysis On Media Framing Of Incarceration, Shannon Elise Ardamica-Hall

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis uses a content analysis in order to answer the question of how incarceration is framed by popular reality and fictional dramas focused on prisons. Employing a coding system to analyze the episodes of two popular televisions show about incarceration, this study is concerned with how and what content is being presented to the audience and how it is framed. Using Oz and Lock-up as text, the study used Entman’s (1993) four processes of framing communication. It was determined that the information and themes of incarceration in the television programs were unrealistic representations of prisoners, rehabilitation programs within the …

Age And Employee Green Behaviors: A Meta-Analysis, Brenton M. Wiernik, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones Mar 2016

Age And Employee Green Behaviors: A Meta-Analysis, Brenton M. Wiernik, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones

Publications and Research

Recent economic and societal developments have led to an increasing emphasis on organizational environmental performance. At the same time, demographic trends are resulting in increasingly aging labor forces in many industrialized nations. Commonly held stereotypes suggest that older workers are less likely to be environmentally responsible than younger workers. To evaluate the degree to which such age differences are present, we meta-analyzed 132 independent correlations and 336 d-values based on 4676 professional workers from 22 samples in 11 countries. Contrary to popular stereotypes, age showed small positive relationships with pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that older adults engaged in these workplace …

The Ethnography Of Rhythm: Orality And Its Technologies [Table Of Contents], Haun Saussy

Literature

“Only Haun Saussy—with his historical range, theoretical breadth, and fine close-reading—could have pulled off this brilliant comparative history of ‘the perturbation caused by the idea of oral literature.’ The disciplinary range of this dazzling scholarly performance takes us from linguistics and philology to ethnography and religious studies, from physiology and psychiatry to the history of graphic and sound technologies. Be prepared to marvel—and learn.” —Linda Hutcheon, University Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature, University of Toronto

A Ph Sensor For Non-Invasive In Vivo Detection And Imaging Of Implant Associated Infection, Unaiza Uzair, Donald Benza, Fenglin Wang, Yash Raval, Tzuen-Rong J. Tzeng, Jeffrey N. Anker

Chemistry Annual Research Symposium

We develop a pH sensor based on use of X-ray Excited Luminescence Chemical Imaging (XELCI) to non-invasively detect and image changes in pH of a surface with high spatial and pH resolution while minimizing tissue scattering effects. Diagnosis and treatment of infections associated with implanted medical devices is a challenge, as clinical symptoms of implant associated infection are often delayed and can sometimes be completely absent till infection reaches a later stage. Early diagnosis of implant associated infection and non-invasive continuous monitoring of infection to evaluate eradication and success of treatment has not been established yet. Treatment of implant infection …

The Goose

A climbing accident took …

Haydn As A London "Star": Thoughts On Using Material Culture To Teach Eighteenth-Century Music At A Liberal Arts College, Vanessa L. Rogers Mar 2016

Haydn As A London "Star": Thoughts On Using Material Culture To Teach Eighteenth-Century Music At A Liberal Arts College, Vanessa L. Rogers

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Interdisciplinary research and teaching is usually touted as at the center of a successful liberal arts college. As musicologists, we already utilize tools of the ethnographic “material culture studies” (thing-theory, materiality) when we study primary sources (especially musical scores), but material culture can be applied to much more.  Teaching with artefacts such as instruments, first edition books, and items from everyday life of the past engages students in discussions and paths of inquiry that inevitably lead to understanding the truer historical picture, and to new connections between the past and present. When teaching Haydn, I spend a week using artefacts …

World War I And The Idea Of Progress In Powers's Three Farmers On Their Way To A Dance, Karsten H. Piep Mar 2016

World War I And The Idea Of Progress In Powers's Three Farmers On Their Way To A Dance, Karsten H. Piep

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "World War I and the Idea of Progress in Powers's Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance" Karsten H. Piep reads Powers's 1985 novel as a critical reexamination of the dynamics and iconography of the early twentieth century that challenges the technological positivism espoused by many U.S. neoconservatives during the 1980s, while insisting on the individual's interpretive powers to discern and release the ever present transformative potentials of history. Situating Three Farmers in the postmodernism debates of the 1980s, Piep argues that the novel succeeds in challenging the idea of history conceived as linear progression, …

Petrography, The Tar Sands Paradise, And The Medium Of Modernity, Warren Cariou, Jon Gordon Mar 2016

Petrography, The Tar Sands Paradise, And The Medium Of Modernity, Warren Cariou, Jon Gordon

The Goose

This article engages with the artistic practice of petrography, the art of creating photographic images through the action of sunlight upon bitumen, the heavy-oil material that is the source of the petroleum in the Athabasca tar sands. It presents several examples of petrographs that document the process of industrial bitumen mining itself. Further, it theorizes the ways in which both the process of producing petrographs and the act of engaging with them as a viewer require a degree of collaboration normally absent from our consumption of petroleum as the medium of modernity. A key argument of the paper is the …

Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal, Brian Bartlett Mar 2016

Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal, Brian Bartlett

The Goose

Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal is a fifty-entry plein-air writing project drafted between April 2013 and October 2014 by various bodies of water—rivers, brooks, lakes, bays, marshes, waterfalls, a vernal pond, a Japanese koi pond. Most of the writing was done in Nova Scotia locations, but some entries were drafted in New Brunswick, Montreal, Missouri, Manhattan, and London, England. I often walked from an hour to four or five hours, then sat down on bare earth, grass, sand, stone, or wood, and wrote, keeping attuned to my surroundings but also letting my mind and memory wander.
