Identification Of Robust Microsatellite Markers For Wild Pig Fecal Dna, Elizabeth M. Kierepka, Shem D. Unger, David A. Keiter, James C. Beasley, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Fred L. Cunningham, Antoinette J. Piaggio

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Collection of fecal samples for use in a genetic capture-mark-recapture framework has become popular as a noninvasive method of monitoring wildlife populations. A major caveat to this process, however, is that fecal samples often yield low quality DNA that is prone to genotyping errors, potentially leading to biases in population parameter estimation. Therefore, considerable care is required to identify robust genetic markers, especially in hot or humid conditions that may accelerate DNA degradation. We identified microsatellite loci in wild pig (Sus scrofa) fecal samples that were robust and informative within warm, humid ecosystems. To examine how degradation affected …

Effects Of Simulated Removal Activities On Movements And Space Use Of Feral Swine, Justin W. Fischer, Dan Mcmurty, Chad R. Blass, W. David Walter, Jeff Beringer, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Abundance and distribution of feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the USA have increased dramatically during the last 30 years. Effective measures are needed to control and eradicate feral swine populations without displacing animals over wider areas. Our objective was to investigate effects of repeated simulated removal activities on feral swine movements and space use.We analyzed location data from 21 feral swine that we fitted with Global Positioning System harnesses in southern MO, USA. Various removal activities were applied over time to eight feral swine before lethal removal, including trapped-and-released, chased with dogs, chased with hunter, and chased with …

Natural Product Studies Of Marine Organisms From The Western Atlantic, Andrew Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The projects described in this dissertation are focused on compounds derived from marine organisms collected from the western Atlantic marine environment. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the study of natural products chemistry, marine natural products, and overview of the research undertaken from natural product chemists. Chapter 2 describes the isolation and structure elucidation of a series of rare diterpenoids from the gorgonian Briareum asbestinum, together with their conformational analysis and biosynthetic interconversions. These rare diterpenes from Briareum asbestinum are linked by an unusual transannular oxa-6π electrocyclization which is described in detail and this work demonstates the biomimetic hemisynthesis of …

New Geometric Large Sets, Michael Robert Hurley Jan 2016

New Geometric Large Sets, Michael Robert Hurley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Let V be an n-dimensional vector space over the field of q elements. By a geometric t-[q^n, k, λ] design we mean a collection D of k-dimensional subspaces of V, called blocks, such that every t-dimensional subspace T of V appears in exactly λ blocks in D. A large set, LS [N] [t, k, q^n], of geometric designs is a collection on N disjoint t-[q^n, k, λ] designs that partitions [V K], the collection of k-dimensional subspaces of V. In this work we construct non-isomorphic large sets using methods based on incidence structures known as the Kramer-Mesner matrices. These structures …

Numerical Assessment Of Eddy-Viscosity Turbulence Models Of An Axial-Flow Turbine At A Low Reynolds Number, Nick Dagoberto Estrada Jan 2016

Numerical Assessment Of Eddy-Viscosity Turbulence Models Of An Axial-Flow Turbine At A Low Reynolds Number, Nick Dagoberto Estrada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The flow field behavior of axial flow turbines is of great importance, especially in modern designs that may operate at a low Reynolds number. At these low Reynolds numbers, the efficiency loss is significantly augmented compared to higher Reynolds number flows. A detailed incompressible numerical study of a single stage axial-flow turbine at a low Reynolds number is investigated with the use of multiple eddy-viscosity turbulence models. The study includes epistemic uncertainty quantification as a form of numerical error estimation. The numerical results show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental data. It was found that the shear stress transport …

Numerical Simulation Of An Ocean Current Turbine Operating In A Wake Field, Parakram Pyakurel Jan 2016

Numerical Simulation Of An Ocean Current Turbine Operating In A Wake Field, Parakram Pyakurel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

An Ocean Current Turbine (OCT) numerical simulation for creating, testing and tuning flight and power takeoff controllers, as well as for farm layout optimization is presented. This simulation utilizes a novel approach for analytically describing oceanic turbulence. This approach has been integrated into a previously developed turbine simulation that uses unsteady Blade Element Momentum theory. Using this, the dynamical response and power production of a single OCT operating in ambient turbulence is quantified. An approach for integrating wake effects into this single device numerical simulation is presented for predicting OCT performance within a farm. To accomplish this, far wake characteristics …

On The Importance Of Being Fun: Over Time Associations Between Perceptions Of Fun And Changes In Peer Preference And Popularity, Shrija R. Dirghangi Jan 2016

On The Importance Of Being Fun: Over Time Associations Between Perceptions Of Fun And Changes In Peer Preference And Popularity, Shrija R. Dirghangi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this short- term longitudinal study (N=428), the unique predictive association between the positive peer nominated characteristic of being fun and peer status (peer preference and popularity) was assessed in a sample of fourth through sixth grade students. Concurrent hierarchical regression analyses and longitudinal structural equation modeling analyses found that peer nominated fun positively predicted preference and popularity, after accounting for the contribution of predictors potentially confounded with being fun, such as prosocial behavior, academic achievement, relational aggression, and physical aggression. The longitudinal association between fun and preference was qualified by grade in school, such that being fun predicted increases …

Of Mice, Men And Memories: The Role Of The Rodent Hippocampus In Object Recognition, Sarah J. Cohen Jan 2016

Of Mice, Men And Memories: The Role Of The Rodent Hippocampus In Object Recognition, Sarah J. Cohen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Establishing appropriate animal models for the study of human memory is paramount to the development of memory disorder treatments. Damage to the hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe brain structure, has been implicated in the memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. In humans, the role of the hippocampus is largely defined; yet, its role in rodents is much less clear due to conflicting findings. To investigate these discrepancies, an extensive review of the rodent literature was conducted, with a focus on studies that used the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) paradigm for testing. The total amount of time the …

Peripheral Object Recognition In Naturalistic Scenes, Derrick Schlangen Jan 2016

Peripheral Object Recognition In Naturalistic Scenes, Derrick Schlangen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Most of the human visual field falls in the periphery, and peripheral processing is important for normal visual functioning. Yet, little is known about peripheral object recognition in naturalistic scenes and factors that modulate this ability. We propose that a critical function of scene and object memory is in order to facilitate visual object recognition in the periphery. In the first experiment, participants identified objects in scenes across different levels of familiarity and contextual information within the scene. We found that familiarity with a scene resulted in a significant increase in the distance that objects were recognized. Furthermore, we found …

Performance Analysis Of Spectrum Sensing Schemes Based On Fractional Lower Order Moments For Cognitive Radios In Alpha- Stable Noise Environments, A-Bon Elfick Ackie Jan 2016

Performance Analysis Of Spectrum Sensing Schemes Based On Fractional Lower Order Moments For Cognitive Radios In Alpha- Stable Noise Environments, A-Bon Elfick Ackie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Natural and manmade noise signals tend to exhibit impulsive behaviors. Therefore modeling those signals as α-stable processes is better suited towards the development of a practical spectrum sensing scheme. However, the performances of detectors operating in an α-stable noise environment are difficult to evaluate. This is because an α-stable random variable can usually only be modeled by the characteristic function since closed-form expressions are usually not available except for the special values of the characteristic exponent that correspond to the Cauchy and Gaussian noise distributions. In this thesis, we derive a general closed-form expression for the probability density function (PDF) …

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation makes two contributions to the use of the Blackboard Architecture for command. The use of boundary nodes for data abstraction is introduced and the use of a solver-based blackboard system with pruning is proposed. It also makes contributions advancing the engineering design process in the area of command system selection for heterogeneous robotic systems. It presents and analyzes data informing decision making between centralized and distributed command systems and also characterizes the efficacy of pruning across different experimental scenarios, demonstrating when it is effective or not. Finally, it demonstrates the operations of the system, raising the technology readiness …

Using Long-Short-Term-Memory Recurrent Neural Networks To Predict Aviation Engine Vibrations, Abdelrahman Elsaid Jan 2016

Using Long-Short-Term-Memory Recurrent Neural Networks To Predict Aviation Engine Vibrations, Abdelrahman Elsaid

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines building viable Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) using Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) neurons to predict aircraft engine vibrations. The different networks are trained on a large database of flight data records obtained from an airline containing flights that suffered from excessive vibration. RNNs can provide a more generalizable and robust method for prediction over analytical calculations of engine vibration, as analytical calculations must be solved iteratively based on specific empirical engine parameters, and this database contains multiple types of engines. Further, LSTM RNNs provide a “memory” of the contribution of previous time series data which can further …

Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri Jan 2016

Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

A new neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) experiment was proposed to be commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The underlying theme of this experiment (first conceived by Golub and Lamoreaux in 1994) is the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The discovery of a non-zero nEDM would be of revolutionary importance to physics, with the discovery of such providing for evidence for new-beyond-the-Standard-Model physics required for a resolution to the unresolved puzzle of why the universe is dominated by matter, as …

Lattice Qcd Calculation Of The Momentum Fraction Carried By Quarks In The Nucleon, And The Roper Puzzle, Mingyang Sun Jan 2016

Lattice Qcd Calculation Of The Momentum Fraction Carried By Quarks In The Nucleon, And The Roper Puzzle, Mingyang Sun

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This thesis is concerned with the lattice QCD calculation of the momentum fraction carried by quarks in the nucleon. Particularly, the strange quark contribution, (x)s, is calculated, as well as the ratio of the strange (x) to that of u/d in the disconnected insertion which will be useful in constraining the global fit of parton distribution functions at small x. The disconnected insertion is known to be hard to calculate on the lattice. We adopt the overlap fermion action on several 2 + 1 flavor domain-wall fermion ensembles with a light sea quark mass which corresponds to pion …

A Reflection Of Maya Representation, Distribution, And Interaction: Ceramic Figurines From The Late Classic Site Of Cancuén, Petén Department, Guatemala, Erin L. Sears Jan 2016

A Reflection Of Maya Representation, Distribution, And Interaction: Ceramic Figurines From The Late Classic Site Of Cancuén, Petén Department, Guatemala, Erin L. Sears

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

This project explores intersecting spheres of technological, stylistic and contextually patterned relationships expressed by ceramic figurines associated with the major Maya polity Cancuén. Cancuén is situated by assessing its external contacts by reference to figurines recovered from several Late Classic settlements, and hieroglyphic texts recorded as interacting polities. By focusing on these sites along connecting waterways, I attempt to discern directions of influence and change with regard to figurine use patterns relative to those seen in other ceramic representations. Traditional archaeological criteria were used to obtain excavated figurines at specific sites. Stylistic and technological information are augmented through an intensive …

Airborne Collision Detection And Avoidance For Small Uas Sense And Avoid Systems, Laith Rasmi Sahawneh Jan 2016

Airborne Collision Detection And Avoidance For Small Uas Sense And Avoid Systems, Laith Rasmi Sahawneh

Theses and Dissertations

The increasing demand to integrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace is motivated by the rapid growth of the UAS industry, especially small UAS weighing less than 55 pounds. Their use however has been limited by the Federal Aviation Administration regulations due to collision risk they pose, safety and regulatory concerns. Therefore, before civil aviation authorities can approve routine UAS flight operations, UAS must be equipped with sense-and-avoid technology comparable to the see-and-avoid requirements for manned aircraft. The sense-and-avoid problem includes several important aspects including regulatory and system-level requirements, design specifications and performance standards, intruder detecting and tracking, …

Neuroscience And Behavioral Genetics In Us Criminal Law: An Empirical Analysis, Nita A. Farahany Jan 2016

Neuroscience And Behavioral Genetics In Us Criminal Law: An Empirical Analysis, Nita A. Farahany

Faculty Scholarship

The goal of this study was to examine the growing use of neurological and behavioral genetic evidence by criminal defendants in US criminal law. Judicial opinions issued between 2005–12 that discussed the use of neuroscience or behavioral genetics by criminal defendants were identified, coded and analysed. Yet, criminal defendants are increasingly introducing such evidence to challenge defendants’ competency, the effectiveness of defense counsel at trial, and to mitigate punishment.

Gentrification: Yes ... My Community Is Improving, But For Who?, David B. Shepherd Jan 2016

Gentrification: Yes ... My Community Is Improving, But For Who?, David B. Shepherd

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that while gentrification brings economic benefits, it disproportionately harms low-income families by displacing them and eroding their community fabric. The author advocates for regulatory measures, such as growth control and zoning laws, to mitigate these negative effects and preserve affordable housing and community culture.

A Hurdle Too High: The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Ultrasounds Under Casey's Undue Burden Standard, Katarzyna Kordas Jan 2016

A Hurdle Too High: The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Ultrasounds Under Casey's Undue Burden Standard, Katarzyna Kordas

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that mandatory ultrasound laws impose an undue burden on women seeking abortions, violating the constitutional standard established in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. These laws, often enacted to dissuade women from proceeding with abortions, are deemed medically unnecessary and unconstitutional as they obstruct women's reproductive rights.

A Financial Analysis Of Professional Baseball Player Worth, Jocelyn R. Pearce Jan 2016

A Financial Analysis Of Professional Baseball Player Worth, Jocelyn R. Pearce

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

By using data from the 2014 Major League Baseball season, this paper examines the current market of baseball. I mainly look to offer clarity to the debate questioning if players are paid their marginal revenue product. By using a two-step model, I first estimate the effect team statistics have on team winning percentage, and next how that team winning percentage affects team revenue. After obtaining results from the regressions, I use those calculations in two formulas aimed at quantifying a player’s marginal revenue product. I find that overall, players are paid close to their respective marginal revenue products. An age …

Voices On Innocence, Lucian E. Dervan, Richard A. Leo, Meghan J. Ryan, Valena Elizabeth Beety, Gregory M. Gilchrist, William W. Berry

Law Faculty Scholarship

In the summer of 2015, experts gathered from around the country to sit together and discuss one of the most pressing and important issues facing the American criminal justice system – innocence. Innocence is an issue that pervades various areas of research and influences numerous topics of discussion. What does innocence mean, particularly in a system that differentiates between innocence and acquittal at sentencing? What is the impact of innocence during plea bargaining? How should we respond to growing numbers of exonerations? What forces lead to the incarceration of innocents? Has an innocent person been put to death and, if …

Intercultural Legal Sensibility As Transformation, Raquel Aldana Jan 2016

Intercultural Legal Sensibility As Transformation, Raquel Aldana

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

In recent years the transformation of legal practice through globalization and shifting demographics in the United States have made the inherent cross-cultural nature of lawyering more apparent. As a result, law schools are being more intentional about the teaching of intercultural legal sensibility as part of the law school curriculum. This increased interest by U.S. law schools to train lawyers in intercultural legal sensibility calls for careful engagement by legal educators to define what intercultural legal sensibility should mean, to develop methodologies in response to the desired outcomes, and to measure their effectiveness. This article offers a reflection on what …
