Investigating Approaches To Media Literacy: An Analysis Of Media Literacy Organizations, Michael Francis Jan 2016

Investigating Approaches To Media Literacy: An Analysis Of Media Literacy Organizations, Michael Francis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Media literacy is a competency needed for success in the 21st century yet a clear purpose does not exist that is useful in curriculum design. The purpose of this study was to investigate a combined (eclectic) approach to media literacy education according to selected international media literacy organizations. Determining an eclectic approach from subject area experts will be useful in designing and integrating media literacy curriculum. Methodologically, this study was a qualitative content analysis and is thematic in nature using a constant comparative method of analysis. Supporting frameworks were established through standards based curriculum development and Schwab’s (1969, 1971, 1973, …

Does partisan ideology influence the voting of members of multi-member adjudicatory bodies at “independent agencies”? In studying the federal circuit courts of appeals, scholars have found that results of cases vary depending upon the partisan composition of the particular panel hearing a case. Few scholars to date, however, have systematically studied whether partisan panel effects occur in administrative adjudication. In this Article, I explore the impact that partisan ideology and panel composition have on the vote choices of an administrative agency rumored to be one of the most partisan: the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”). Employing an original dataset of …

Large-Scale Cortical Functional Connectivity Underlying Visuospatial Attention, Timothy Patrick Meehan Jan 2016

Large-Scale Cortical Functional Connectivity Underlying Visuospatial Attention, Timothy Patrick Meehan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The endogenous, or voluntary, control of visuospatial attention relies upon interactions within a frontoparietal dorsal attention network (DAN) and this network’s top-down influence on visual occipital cortex (VOC). While these interactions have been shown to occur during attention tasks, they are also known to occur to some extent at rest, but the degree to which task-related interactions reflect either modulation or reorganization of such ongoing intrinsic interactions is poorly understood. In addition, it is known that in spatial neglect—a syndrome following unilateral brain lesions in which patients fail to attend to the contralesional side of space—symptom severity covaries with disruptions …

Mhysa Or Monster: Masculinization, Mimicry, And The White Savior In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Rachel Hartnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Song of Ice and Fire is unarguably one of the most popular fantasy series of all time. Notwithstanding its success, the series has only recently begun to be analyzed critically. George R.R. Martin’s books are often celebrated for breaking many of the tropes common in fantasy literature. Despite this, the series is nonetheless a product of a genre that has been shaped by white, male authors. Using such prominent postcolonial scholars as Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Homi Bhabha, and Albert Memmi, I analyze the five published books of Martin’s series. I argue that although Martin seems to be aware …

Moving Mountains: Animal Rights Organizations, Emotion, And Autodidactic Frame Alignment, Lee Charles Jr Jarvis Jan 2016

Moving Mountains: Animal Rights Organizations, Emotion, And Autodidactic Frame Alignment, Lee Charles Jr Jarvis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Animal rights organizations, in attempting to affect institutional change in industrial animal agriculture, face an institutional mountain. I show how these organizations, though contesting institutions which are highly reified, tacitly endorsed, and historically inertial, leverage emotional experiences and regulation to incrementally move this mountain. Using a grounded qualitative study of interview data from animal rights advocates and archival data generated by animal rights organizations, this study finds that animal rights organizations have encoded both response- and antecedent-focused emotion regulation into two distinct strategies used to garner support for their institutional change project: transgression mining and seed planting. Furthermore, this study …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Cav2.1 Expression And Functional Organization At The Presynaptic Terminal, Brati Das Jan 2016

Molecular Mechanisms Of Cav2.1 Expression And Functional Organization At The Presynaptic Terminal, Brati Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Neuronal circuit output is dependent on the embedded synapses’ precise regulation of Ca2+ mediated release of neurotransmitter filled synaptic vesicles (SVs) in response to action potential (AP) depolarizations. A key determinant of SV release is the specific expression, organization, and abundance of voltage gated calcium channel (VGCC) subtypes at presynaptic active zones (AZs). In particular, the relative distance that SVs are coupled to VGCCs at AZs results in two different modes of SV release that dramatically impacts synapse release probability and ultimately the neuronal circuit output. They are: “Ca2+ microdomain,” SV release due to cooperative action of many loosely coupled …

Professional Public Administration: A Synthesis Of An Inchoate Concept, Joseph Christian Heilman Jan 2016

Professional Public Administration: A Synthesis Of An Inchoate Concept, Joseph Christian Heilman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The term profession is found throughout the scholarly literature; despite frequent use of the term, there exists little or no means of providing a common conception of the term. Consequently, calls for increasing professionalization of public administration appear to be premature. Therefore, this dissertation utilizes inductive research to generate theory, which synthesizes the inchoate concept of the professional public administrator. The motivation to pursue this line of inquiry stems from a personal need to weigh in on the perennial debate about what skills, knowledge, and information should be communicated to future generations of public administration thinkers and practitioners. To that …

Finite elds of the form F2m play an important role in coding theory and cryptography. We show that the choice of how to represent the elements of these elds can have a signi cant impact on the resource requirements for quantum arithmetic. In particular, we show how the Gaussian normal basis representations and \ghost-bit basis" representations can be used to implement inverters with a quantum circuit of depth O(mlog(m)). To the best of our knowledge, this is the rst construction with subquadratic depth reported in the literature. Our quantum circuit for the computation of multiplicative inverses is based on the …

Silence, Expression, Manifestation: Developing Female Desire And Gender Balance In Early Modern Italian, English, And Spanish Drama, Mitchel Baccinelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Renaissance and Baroque drama offers a view into gender dynamics of the time. What is seen is a development in the allowed expression and manifestation of desire by females, beginning from a point of near silence, and arriving at points of verbal statement and even physical violence. Specifically, in La Mandragola by Niccolò Machiavelli, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega, there appears a chronological progression, whereby using desire and its expression as a metric in conjunction with modern concepts of gender and sexuality to measure a shift in relation to what is and is …

Synaptic Rearrangements And The Role Of Netrin-Frazzled Signaling In Shaping The Drosophila Giant Fiber Circuit, Brandon N. Lloyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the developing CNS, presynaptic neurons often have exuberant overgrowth and form excess (and overlapping) postsynaptic connections. Importantly, these excess connections are refined during circuit maturation so that only the appropriate connections remain. This synaptic rearrangement phenomenon has been studied extensively in vertebrates but many of those models involve complex neuronal circuits with multiple presynaptic inputs and postsynaptic outputs. Using a simple escape circuit in Drosophila melanogaster (the giant fiber circuit), we developed tools that enabled us to study the molecular development of this circuit; which consists of a bilaterally symmetrical pair of presynaptic interneurons and postsynaptic motorneurons. In the …
