Evolution Of The Mysrs Element In The Genome Of Rodent Species, Megan M. Scott Jan 2016

Evolution Of The Mysrs Element In The Genome Of Rodent Species, Megan M. Scott

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Retrotransposons are a type of transposable element in which DNA copies are produced via an RNA intermediate and integrate into new chromosomal sites continually contributing to the dynamics of genomes. While sequencing the mys element among the Cricetidae family of rodents, we identified a previously uncharacterized element in the genome of the Mexican volcano mouse that we refer to as mys-related sequence (mysRS). This investigation provides a unique opportunity to contrast the evolution of the two retrotransposon families apparently restricted to a specific taxonomic group of rodents. By analyzing the genomes of various cricetid rodents, our results provide evidence that …

Using Free-Text Searching And Icd-10 Codes To Identify Prospective Patients With Drug-Induced Liver Injury, Cassandra Coffman Jan 2016

Using Free-Text Searching And Icd-10 Codes To Identify Prospective Patients With Drug-Induced Liver Injury, Cassandra Coffman

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a rare cause of liver disease that is difficult to diagnose due to the lack of a confirmatory test. The Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) was developed to enroll patients with DILI to understand the clinical outcomes of the disease. The present study aims to develop a tool to identify patients with DILI for enrollment into the DILIN study. The use of ICD-10 codes and liver injury terms were used to search the electronic medical records (EMRs) of patients at the University of Michigan. It was hypothesized that free-text searching using key words would be …

Reactivity Of (3-Methylpentadienyl)Iron(1+) Cation: Late-Stage Introduction Of A (3-Methyl-2z,4-Pentadien-1-Yl) Side Chain, Subhabrata Chaudhury, Shukun Li, William A. Donaldson Jan 2016

Reactivity Of (3-Methylpentadienyl)Iron(1+) Cation: Late-Stage Introduction Of A (3-Methyl-2z,4-Pentadien-1-Yl) Side Chain, Subhabrata Chaudhury, Shukun Li, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 3-methyl-2Z,4-pentadien-1-yl sidechain is found in various sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. A route for the late stage introduction of this functionality was developed which relies on nucleophilic attack on the (3-methylpentadienyl)iron(1+) cation, followed by oxidative decomplexation. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of the proposed structure of heteroscyphic acid A methyl ester. Realization of this synthesis led to a correction of the proposed structure.

A Full-Dimensional Model Of Ozone Forming Reaction: The Absolute Value Of The Recombination Rate Coefficient, Its Pressure And Temperature Dependencies, Alexander Teplukhin, Dmitri Babikov Jan 2016

A Full-Dimensional Model Of Ozone Forming Reaction: The Absolute Value Of The Recombination Rate Coefficient, Its Pressure And Temperature Dependencies, Alexander Teplukhin, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Rigorous calculations of scattering resonances in ozone are carried out for a broad range of rotational excitations. The accurate potential energy surface of Dawes is adopted, and a new efficient method for calculations of ro–vibrational energies, wave functions and resonance lifetimes is employed (which uses hyper-spherical coordinates, the sequential diagonalization/truncation approach, grid optimization and complex absorbing potential). A detailed analysis is carried out to characterize distributions of resonance energies and lifetimes, their rotational/vibrational content and their positions with respect to the centrifugal barrier. Emphasis is on the contribution of these resonances to the recombination process that forms ozone. It is …

Relational Red Flags: Detecting Undesirable Qualities In Initial Romantic Encounters, Richard C. White Jan 2016

Relational Red Flags: Detecting Undesirable Qualities In Initial Romantic Encounters, Richard C. White

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation extends the work of Signal Detection Theory (SDT) (Green & Swets, 1966; Swets, 1964) in the social sciences by applying it to romantic relationships, specifically initial romantic encounters (i.e. formal or informal first few dates, or random, chance encounters). The term relational red flag is put forth to describe the detection of signals in initial romantic encounters that may be perceived as any undesirable quality, which can be a characteristic, behavior, state, or trait that a person would not want in a potential romantic partner. These undesirable qualities can be costly to a healthy, stable relationship because they …

Ecological-Hydrological Feedback In Forested Wetlands, Scott Thomas Allen Jan 2016

Ecological-Hydrological Feedback In Forested Wetlands, Scott Thomas Allen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In forested wetlands, the biotic and abiotic consequences of water level variability is not well understood. The effects of flooding on carbon and water exchanges are important knowledge gaps where progress could benefit management of natural resources and predicting of changes in surface geophysical cycles. Two specific needs are a better understanding of (1) wetland tree responses to hydrologic variations, and (2) the effects of the forest and associated tree stressors on surface energy and water fluxes. Objectives were to determine effects of flooding on evaporation rates and energy dynamics, tree water use and growth responses to river-floodplain connectivity and …

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan Jan 2016

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Garbage collection is moving from being a utility to a requirement of every modern programming language. With multi-core and distributed systems, most programs written recently are heavily multi-threaded and distributed. Distributed and multi-threaded programs are called concurrent programs. Manual memory management is cumbersome and difficult in concurrent programs. Concurrent programming is characterized by multiple independent processes/threads, communication between processes/threads, and uncertainty in the order of concurrent operations. The uncertainty in the order of operations makes manual memory management of concurrent programs difficult. A popular alternative to garbage collection in concurrent programs is to use smart pointers. Smart pointers can collect …

Molecular Simulation Study Of Oil Hydrocarbons, Dispersants And Other Organics In Atmospheric Air/Water Interfaces, Zenghui Zhang Jan 2016

Molecular Simulation Study Of Oil Hydrocarbons, Dispersants And Other Organics In Atmospheric Air/Water Interfaces, Zenghui Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main objective of this dissertation is to study the interfacial properties of organic contaminants, in particular green leaf volatiles (GLVs), oil hydrocarbons [mainly intermediate-volatile organic compounds (IVOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)], as well as surfactant species (i.e. DOSS and Span 80) from Corexit dispersants at atmospheric air/water and air/seawater interfaces. All these compounds can significantly contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Furthermore, our simulation work on IVOCs, SVOCs and Corexit surfactants, combining with experiments from the Valsaraj group, suggests that these compounds can be adsorbed on the surface of seawater droplets and aerosolized into the …

Essays In Corporate Equity Transactions, James David Kelly Jan 2016

Essays In Corporate Equity Transactions, James David Kelly

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents two essays dealing with corporate equity transactions. The first essay concerns an equity issuing transaction, the initial public offering (IPO), and specifically lockups, which restrict sales by pre-IPO shareholders. We improve upon the methodology for testing theory related to lockup length through the use of a multinomial logit as well as explore the reasons for and implications of multiple lockup agreements. We find that multiple lockups are associated with dual class equity structures, high book-to-market values, and more secondary shares offered. Offerings that include multiple lockups are more likely to deviate in (weighted average) length from the …

The Representation Of Disability In The Music Of Alfred Hitchcock Films, John T. Dunn Jan 2016

The Representation Of Disability In The Music Of Alfred Hitchcock Films, John T. Dunn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Several of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies feature characters with disabilities. Often, these characters are protagonists, and Hitchcock systematically manipulates his audiences to identify with these characters through the editing process, sound effects, and music. This dissertation will analyze the ways music represents various disabilities in three Hitchcock films. Vertigo (1958) addresses obsession and phobia as its main themes, whereas Psycho (1960) investigates obsession and madness. Finally, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) explores muteness, hysteria, and identity in the context of two pieces of diegetic music. Hitchcock made careful notes for the music in his films; songs represent disability through …

A Flipped Classroom Redesign In General Chemistry, Scott A. Reid Jan 2016

A Flipped Classroom Redesign In General Chemistry, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The flipped classroom continues to attract significant attention in higher education. Building upon our recent parallel controlled study of the flipped classroom in a second-term general chemistry course (J. Chem. Educ., 2016, 93, 13–23), here we report on a redesign of the flipped course aimed at scaling up total enrollment while keeping discussion sizes small (i.e.,students), and maintaining equivalent contact hour load for faculty and workload for students. To that end, the course format featured lecture contact pushed outside of the classroom in the form of video lectures (mean duration 13 minutes) paired with online …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The reaction of H + phenol and H/D + toluene has been studied in a supersonic expansion after electric discharge. The (1 + 1′) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra of the reaction products, at m/z = parent + 1, or parent + 2 amu, were measured by scanning the first (resonance) laser. The resulting spectra are highly structured. Ionization energies were measured by scanning the second (ionization) laser, while the first laser was tuned to a specific transition. Theoretical calculations, benchmarked to the well-studied H + benzene → cyclohexadienyl radical reaction, were performed. The spectrum arising from the …

The Relative Importance Of Tree And Stand Properties In Susceptibility To Spruce Beetle Outbreak In The Mid-20th Century, Felicia Bakaj, Nathan Mietkiewicz, Thomas T. Veblen, Dominik Kulakowski Jan 2016

The Relative Importance Of Tree And Stand Properties In Susceptibility To Spruce Beetle Outbreak In The Mid-20th Century, Felicia Bakaj, Nathan Mietkiewicz, Thomas T. Veblen, Dominik Kulakowski

Geography

Tree susceptibility to potentially lethal agents is determined not only by attributes of individual trees, but also by neighborhood effects at a range of scales. For example, effects of disturbances on individual trees are often contingent on the size, configuration, and other properties of neighboring trees. Wildfires can modify postfire properties of individual trees as well as of entire forest stands, both of which can affect subsequent ecological processes, including subsequent disturbances. In recent years, much has been learned about how disturbances interact, but numerous questions concerning underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. For example, the relative importance of forest properties at …

Fire Severity Controlled Susceptibility To A 1940s Spruce Beetle Outbreak In Colorado, Usa, Dominik Kulakowski, Thomas T. Veblen, Peter Beb Jan 2016

Fire Severity Controlled Susceptibility To A 1940s Spruce Beetle Outbreak In Colorado, Usa, Dominik Kulakowski, Thomas T. Veblen, Peter Beb

Geography

The frequency, magnitude, and size of forest disturbances are increasing globally. Much recent research has focused on how the occurrence of one disturbance may affect susceptibility to subsequent disturbances. While much has been learned about such linked disturbances, the strength of the interactions is likely to be contingent on the severity of disturbances as well as climatic conditions, both of which can affect disturbance intensity and tree resistance to disturbances. Subalpine forests in western Colorado were affected by extensive and severe wildfires in the late 19th century and an extensive and severe outbreak of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) in the …

Wrestling With Neptune: The Political Consequences Of The Military Inundations During The Dutch Revolt, Robert Tiegs Jan 2016

Wrestling With Neptune: The Political Consequences Of The Military Inundations During The Dutch Revolt, Robert Tiegs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the course of several centuries during the High and Late Middle Ages the people of Holland developed a vast water-management infrastructure to protect themselves against flooding. Enormous sections of the province lay at or below sea-level, so it was only through constant diligence that they kept their lands dry. They found that the best way to maintain these flood defenses was through cooperation and consensus forming at the local and regional level. Those who would be affected an inundation were given a chance to participate in the decision-making process about how to prevent floods from occurring. These environmental influences …

Application Of Biomass Derived Materials In Nanocomposites And Drilling Fluids, Kunlin Song Jan 2016

Application Of Biomass Derived Materials In Nanocomposites And Drilling Fluids, Kunlin Song

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tar is inevitably produced from biomass thermochemical processes, and is often disposed as an industrial waste, leading to environmental pollution. As a result of its high carbon content, tar was expected to be a promising precursor for manufacturing carbon materials. Consequently, low-cost porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) using tar, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and silver nanoparticles was fabricated through electrospinning and subsequent stabilization and carbonization processes. The continuous electrospun nanofibers were obtained with diameters ranging from 392 to 903 nm. The addition of biomass tar resulted in increased fiber diameters, reduced thermal stabilities, and slowed cyclization reactions of PAN in the as-spun nanofibers. …

Decadal Bering Sea Seascape Change: Consequences For Pacific Walruses And Indigenous Hunters, G. Carleton Ray, Gary L. Hufford, James E. Overland, Igor Krupnik, Jerry Mccormick-Ray, Karen Frey, Elizabeth Labunski Jan 2016

Decadal Bering Sea Seascape Change: Consequences For Pacific Walruses And Indigenous Hunters, G. Carleton Ray, Gary L. Hufford, James E. Overland, Igor Krupnik, Jerry Mccormick-Ray, Karen Frey, Elizabeth Labunski

Geography

The most signifi cant factors currently affecting the Pacifi c walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) population are climate change and consequent changes in sea-ice morphology and dynamics. This paper integrates recent physical sea-ice change in the Bering Sea with biological and ecological conditions of walruses in their winter-spring reproductive habitat. Historically, walrus in winter-spring depended on a critical mass of sea-ice habitat to optimize social networking, reproductive fi tness, feeding behavior, migration, and energetic effi ciency. During 2003-2013, our cross-disciplinary, multiscale analysis from shipboard observations, satellite imagery, and ice-fl oe tracking, reinforced by information from indigenous subsistence hunters, documented change of …

Geologic Extremes Of The Nw Himalaya: Investigations Of The Himalayan Ultra-High Pressure And Low Temperature Deformation Histories, Dennis Girard Donaldson Jan 2016

Geologic Extremes Of The Nw Himalaya: Investigations Of The Himalayan Ultra-High Pressure And Low Temperature Deformation Histories, Dennis Girard Donaldson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on two extremes of orogenic development in the Himalaya: the timing of early ultra-high pressure related tectonics and the subsequent emplacement of the high grade Greater Himalayan Crystallines. The Himalayan orogeny is one of if not the best example of ongoing collisional systems, marked by the ongoing convergence of the Indian and Asian continents. The presence of coesite in the Tso Morari complex respresents subduction of the Indian continental crust to ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) conditions. However, the timing of UHP metamorphism is debated, creating an uncertainty in the calculation of subduction and exhumation rates. Petrologic and geochronologic analyses …

The Accuracy Of Dietary Recall Of Infant Feeding And Food Allergen Data, Zyl Z Van, K. Maslin, T. Dean, R. Blaauw, C. Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractBackgroundResearch investigating the association of infant dietary factors with later health outcomes often relies on maternal recall. It is unclear what the effect of recall bias is on the accuracy of the information obtained. The present study aimed to determine the extent of recall bias on the accuracy of infant feeding and food allergen data collected 10 years later.MethodsMothers were recruited from a prospective birth cohort from the Isle of Wight. When their child was 10 years of age (2011/2012), mothers were requested to complete a retrospective infant feeding questionnaire asking the same questions as those solicited in 2001/2002.ResultsIn total, …

Yuli's Story: Using Educational Policy To Achieve Cultural Genocide, Katrina Johnson Leon Jan 2016

Yuli's Story: Using Educational Policy To Achieve Cultural Genocide, Katrina Johnson Leon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All children residing in the United States have the right to a quality education. At least that is our collective expectation. Through the lived experience of Yuli, a Native American woman from the Southwest, you will discover, due to her birth on a remote reservation, she was not given the same access to education you or I would expect. On Yuli’s reservation, the school system is managed by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). Rather than provide K-12 schooling, the BIE operates K-8 on her reservation and then Native youth who want to go to high school must move off-reservation. …

Assuming The Worst: Eliminating The Forcibly Steals Element From Second-Degree Robbery, Ross Valore Jan 2016

Assuming The Worst: Eliminating The Forcibly Steals Element From Second-Degree Robbery, Ross Valore

Missouri Law Review

This Note begins with an exploration of the factual circumstances that gave rise to the court’s determination that an objective standard should be applied when determining whether a threat of the immediate use of physical force exists in second-degree robbery cases. This Note then discusses the conflict among Missouri appellate courts regarding the determination of whether a threat of force exists, while also looking at how other states have handled this issue. Next, this Note provides an analysis of the Supreme Court of Missouri’s reasoning in Brooks and, finally, explores how the objective standard articulated by the court will be …

Animal Rights Unraveled: Why Abolitionism Collapses Into Welfarism And What It Means For Animal Ethics, Luis E. Chiesa Jan 2016

Animal Rights Unraveled: Why Abolitionism Collapses Into Welfarism And What It Means For Animal Ethics, Luis E. Chiesa

Journal Articles

Most people support laws that seek to reduce the suffering of animals. Yet animal cruelty statutes and other kinds of animal welfare laws are under sustained attack by the so-called abolitionists. Animal rights abolitionists claim that it is categorically wrong to treat animals as commodities, and animal welfare laws should be opposed because they do not alter the property status of animals. Abolitionists also claim that animal welfare regulations do not meaningfully reduce animal suffering. In fact, abolitionists argue that such statutes likely increase future animal suffering, either by delaying the advent of abolition or by soothing the conscience of …

Truthiness And The Marble Palace, Chad M. Oldfather, Todd C. Peppers Jan 2016

Truthiness And The Marble Palace, Chad M. Oldfather, Todd C. Peppers

Emory Law Journal Online

Tucked inside the title page of David Lat's Supreme Ambitions, just after a note giving credit for the cover design and before the copyright notice, sits a standard disclaimer of the sort that appears in all novels: 'This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and events either are the products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events or locales is entirely coincidental.' These may be the most truly fictional words in the entire book. Supreme Ambitions' observations about judging, clerking, prestige and the culture of elite law schools …

A New Threat To The Viability Of Campaign Contribution Limits, Brent Ferguson Jan 2016

A New Threat To The Viability Of Campaign Contribution Limits, Brent Ferguson

Emory Law Journal Online

In July, the Wisconsin Supreme Court held that it violates the First Amendment to prevent political candidates from coordinating with outside spending groups like Super PACs if the groups' ads do not expressly advocate the election or defeat of a candidate. The decision is erroneous under federal precedent and fundamentally misunderstands the Supreme Court's holdings distinguishing between independent spending and spending coordinated with a candidate. Wisconsin's regulatory scheme will be largely inoperable for the time being: Contribution limits will be fairly meaningless, at least for sophisticated actors who seek to circumvent them. And the logic of the decision leads to …

Response To Tuerkheimer: Rape On And Off Campus: The Vulnerable Subject Of Rape Law: Rethinking Agency And Consent, Stu Marvel Jan 2016

Response To Tuerkheimer: Rape On And Off Campus: The Vulnerable Subject Of Rape Law: Rethinking Agency And Consent, Stu Marvel

Emory Law Journal Online

Tuerkheimer's article for the Emory Law Journal, Rape On and Off Campus, extends her earlier work on sexual agency, consent, and the inadequate nature of U.S. rape law to examine the disconnect between widely acknowledged cultural norms around sex, and the stubborn recalcitrance of rape laws to social reform. This response applies some of the insights of vulnerability theory to Tuerkheimer's piece with the goal of extending these important conversations into new analytical fields. The theory provides a useful vantage upon the systemic and historical patterns of inequality that lead to violence against women, as well as the legal and …

A Computational Study On Different Penalty Approaches For Constrained Optimization In Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning With A Simulated Annealing Algorithm, Khoroushadi Mohammad Sadegh Mohammadi Jan 2016

A Computational Study On Different Penalty Approaches For Constrained Optimization In Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning With A Simulated Annealing Algorithm, Khoroushadi Mohammad Sadegh Mohammadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a cancer treatment method in which the intensities of the radiation beams are modulated; therefore these beams have non-uniform radiation intensities. The overall result is the delivery of the prescribed dose in the target volume. The dose distribution is conformal to the shape of the target and minimizes the dose to the nearby critical organs. An inverse planning algorithm is used to obtain those non-uniform beam intensities. In inverse treatment planning, the treatment plan is achieved by using an optimization process. The optimized plan results to a high-quality dose distribution in the planning target …

A Content Analysis On Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males: An Assessment On Experts' Quotes In National News Sources, Christopher Fulcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is increasing concern in news media sources regarding police killings of unarmed Black males. However, there is limited research on the portrayal of such incidents in the news and the implications for police-community relations in African- American communities. In order to address this gap, this study analyzed 120 experts’ quotes provided by two of the largest and most respected newspapers in the United States -- the New York Times and USA Today. This research comprised a content analysis of quotes related to the deaths of Eric Garner (Staten Island, New York), Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri), and Freddie Gray (Baltimore …
