Ios Application For Inventory In Small Retail Stores, Andrea Savage Dec 2016

Ios Application For Inventory In Small Retail Stores, Andrea Savage

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Currently, small retail stores with low technology budgets such as those right here in San Luis Obispo are struggling to integrate new technologies into their companies. This mobile application built for iOS with a Firebase backend is seeking to remove their barriers to entry. I built this application to give small retail stores a customizable application that allows them to display products electronically to customers and maintain accurate inventory both in one place. The construction of this application hinged around three major design decisions: UI design of the color management views, organization of the database, and accessing the database with …

“What Difference Does Difference Make?”: Diversity, Intersectionality And Transnational Feminist Politics, Nikita Dhawan, Maria Do Mar Castro Varela Dec 2016

“What Difference Does Difference Make?”: Diversity, Intersectionality And Transnational Feminist Politics, Nikita Dhawan, Maria Do Mar Castro Varela

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper engages with the formative concepts of diversity and intersectionality, inquiring how far they are employed as tools for achieving (gender) justice that open up spaces for marginalized constituencies, including racial and religious minorities, colonial subjects, queers, and women and how they unwittingly reify the hegemony of an entitled majority by failing to realize their emancipatory possibilities.

Pitfalls Of Diversity Management, Mechthild Nagel Dec 2016

Pitfalls Of Diversity Management, Mechthild Nagel

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

A brief historical overview of the ideological shift from multicultural education towards diversity education suggests that the “struggle” paradigm of the Civil Rights Movement has been abandoned in favor of celebrating differences. The paper discusses conflict-laden approaches of managing diverse voices, identities, and discourses within the U.S. academy.

Contextualizing Diversity’S (Non-)Performativity, Eike Marten Dec 2016

Contextualizing Diversity’S (Non-)Performativity, Eike Marten

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The article contextualizes the traveled skeptical evaluation of diversity as a ‘non-performative’ (Ahmed) in German Gender Studies and Diversity Studies debates. The text analyses and highlights performative effects of a ‘narrative of overcoming’ according to which a multidimensional and non-hierarchic notion of diversity supersedes and replaces the critical concepts of gender and difference.

An Investigation Of Dx Cooling Coil Inherent Characteristics, Krittima Santiwattana Dec 2016

An Investigation Of Dx Cooling Coil Inherent Characteristics, Krittima Santiwattana

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

DX cooling coil (DCC) systems have dominated light commercial and household applications in the U.S for several decades. Approximately 14.5% of energy use is consumed by space cooling in commercial buildings, whereas 87% of households are installed with air-conditioners. Improper installation, poor design, and lack of optimized control/operations incur faults in HVAC systems causing 25% to 50% energy waste in a building. These consequences are subject to inefficient equipment modelling of which is developed from: (1) insufficient understanding in equipment characteristics, (2) uncertainties in testing environment and data, and (3) access and cost limitations. Therefore, in this thesis DCC inherent …

Evaluations Of Biological Control Agents For The Management Of Soybean Cyst Nematode (Heterodera Glycines) In Soybean (Glycine Max L. Merr.), Kelsie M. Musil

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines) is the most yield limiting pathogen of soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.). Current management strategies of crop rotation and using resistant varieties are not completely effective and alternative management strategies are needed. Commercial seed treatments with biological agents are available to protect against yield loss from SCN, but have not been evaluated in Nebraska. Field studies were conducted in eight Nebraska locations (six infested with SCN and two non-infested) during 2014 and 2015 to evaluate seed treatment effects on soybean establishment, SCN population density, and yield. The seed treatments were CruiserMaxx® …

An Analysis Of Moral Distress Experienced Among Nursing Students, Katherine Merchent Johnson Dec 2016

An Analysis Of Moral Distress Experienced Among Nursing Students, Katherine Merchent Johnson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this senior honors thesis was to obtain descriptive data about the moral distress experienced by nursing students during clinical rotations in nursing school. This senior honors thesis is significant to nursing because, although moral distress is a well-researched topic, little to no information has been gathered regarding moral distress among the nursing student sub-culture. Nursing students are likely one of the most important groups in which moral distress needs to be explored, because experiencing it could lead to fewer people wanting to become a part of the nursing profession. The research design used quantitative methodology. The approach …

Why Arrest?, Rachel A. Harmon Dec 2016

Why Arrest?, Rachel A. Harmon

Michigan Law Review

Arrests are the paradigmatic police activity. Though the practice of arrests in the United States, especially arrests involving minority suspects, is under attack, even critics widely assume the power to arrest is essential to policing. As a result, neither commentators nor scholars have asked why police need to make arrests. This Article takes up that question, and it argues that the power to arrest and the use of that power should be curtailed. The twelve million arrests police conduct each year are harmful not only to the individual arrested but also to their families and communities and to society as …

Habitat Use By Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops Truncatus, In Roanoke Sound, North Carolina, Shauna Marisa Mcbride

Dissertations

Information on the habitat use of a species is important to develop conservation efforts and management strategies for that species. Roanoke Sound, North Carolina is primarily a seasonal habitat for bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, from late spring to early fall, but little information is known about how dolphins use this area. Transect survey data and opportunistic survey data collected by the Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research from 2009 to 2015 were used to analyze dolphin habitat use. The objectives of this project were to: 1) identify areas that were important to dolphins, 2) determine which behaviors were observed …

A Mixed Methods Study: Evaluating The Relationship Of Project Manager Competencies And It Project Management Methodologies, Keith A. Mcdermott Dec 2016

A Mixed Methods Study: Evaluating The Relationship Of Project Manager Competencies And It Project Management Methodologies, Keith A. Mcdermott

Open Access Theses

Determining skillsets that are particularly important to the development of an effective project manager can be useful for a variety of applications. These applications range from the hiring of a new project manager for an organization to continued training for current employees. Past research has called upon current project managers to rate what skillsets they see as important to the cultivation of an optimal or effective project manager. Additional research has expanded this idea to determine how skillsets vary between project managers and functional managers (El-Sabaa, 2001). While this research is certainly important, skillset grouping can be further explored. This …

Deep Collective Inference, John A. Moore Dec 2016

Deep Collective Inference, John A. Moore

Open Access Theses

Collective inference is widely used to improve classification in network datasets. However, despite recent advances in deep learning and the successes of recurrent neural networks (RNNs), researchers have only just recently begun to study how to apply RNNs to heterogeneous graph and network datasets. There has been recent work on using RNNs for unsupervised learning in networks (e.g., graph clustering, node embedding) and for prediction (e.g., link prediction, graph classification), but there has been little work on using RNNs for node-based relational classification tasks. In this paper, we provide an end-to-end learning framework using RNNs for collective inference. Our main …

Indiana Local Road And Bridge Conditions, Indiana Ltap Dec 2016

Indiana Local Road And Bridge Conditions, Indiana Ltap

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

In response to an appilcation requirement for the Community Matching Grant Fund Program, 354 asset management plans for roads and bridges were submitted in 2016 which contain the current conditions of local agency roads and bridges. This report describes these conditions and suggests the funding levels necessary to improve and maintain these assets at defined condition levels over a ten-year period. A ten-year horizon was used so as to correspond to previous LTAP studies performed in 2003 and 2009. The ten-year time period is also comparable to other Indiana studies.

Multiplex Real Time Pcr And Melt Curve Assay Development For The Simultaneous Detection And Identification Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa J. Pierpont Dec 2016

Multiplex Real Time Pcr And Melt Curve Assay Development For The Simultaneous Detection And Identification Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa J. Pierpont

All NMU Master's Theses

Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae are bacteria that commonly colonize healthy individuals without causing disease. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), a more virulent type of S. aureus, is carried by a small percentage of people. These two bacteria have an adversarial relationship both in vitro and in vivo, with S. pneumoniae being able to limit the growth of S. aureus. It has been hypothesized that the relationship between these bacteria may be altered in individuals immunized with the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, raising concerns that vaccinated individuals may be more likely to carry MRSA. Assessing the carriage rate of these bacteria …

Evaluation Of A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay To Simultaneously Detect Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus In Nasal Samples, Polly Hockberger Dec 2016

Evaluation Of A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay To Simultaneously Detect Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus In Nasal Samples, Polly Hockberger

All NMU Master's Theses

Invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus is associated with nasal carriage of these bacteria. Use of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in children altered nasal carriage rates and reduced infections due to S. pneumonia. Similar studies demonstrate that there is an inverse correlation between S. pneumoniae and S. aureus nasal carriage in children, but this inverse correlation has not been extensively investigated adults. The PCV is now approved for use in adults, a group more likely to be colonized with S. aureus. To investigate the impact of PCV vaccination on S. aureus carriage in adults, the …

Wolf Predation: Where And How Wolves Kill Beavers, And Confronting The Biases In Scat-Based Diet Studies, Thomas Gable Dec 2016

Wolf Predation: Where And How Wolves Kill Beavers, And Confronting The Biases In Scat-Based Diet Studies, Thomas Gable

All NMU Master's Theses

Beavers can be a significant prey item for wolves in boreal systems but how wolves hunt beavers is largely unknown. I inferred how wolves hunt beavers by identifying 22 kill sites using clusters of locations from GPS-collared wolves in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. Where wolves killed beavers varied seasonally with the majority (58%) of kills in the spring occurring below dams and on shorelines while the majority (80%) of kills in the fall were near feeding trails and canals. I deduced that the typical hunting strategy has 3 components: 1) waiting near areas of high beaver use until a beaver …

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer Dec 2016

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer

All NMU Master's Theses

The P300 subcomponent, P3b, is an event related potential detected at the scalp surface when a working memory comparison results in differences between the contents of working memory and incoming stimulus information. Previous research has indicated that as infrequent targets become more difficult to detect (morphologically similar to a frequent non-target stimulus) the P300 becomes attenuated. fMRI research has also indicated increased prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during P300 generation. To examine the relationship between P3b amplitude and PFC activity participants performed an easy and difficult target detection task in both EEG and NIRS called the oddball. The EEG and behavioral …

Which Public? Whose Goods? What We Know (And What We Don't) About Public Goods In Rural China, Sara A. Newland Dec 2016

Which Public? Whose Goods? What We Know (And What We Don't) About Public Goods In Rural China, Sara A. Newland

Government: Faculty Publications

What have we learned from a decade of research on the provision of public goods in the Chinese countryside? This review article surveys the literature in political science, economics and Chinese area studies. It describes the three dominant types of explanations for variation in the quality of public goods: Local elections, social sanctioning and economic policies. It then argues that these findings are plagued by a set of common problems. Scholars mean different things when they use the term public goods, making their findings difficult to compare. Furthermore, the most common measures of public goods ignore the ways in which …
