Digitally Mediated: Exploring The Correlation Between Hyper-Reliance On Electronically-Mediated Communication, Verbal Communication Apprehension And Interpersonal Relationship Skills, Kevin R. Bertsch

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to identify a possible correlation between the use of electronically-mediated communication (EMC) as the dependent variable and both verbal communication apprehension (CA) and interpersonal intimacy and closeness as independent variables. Viewed through the lens of three primary theoretical perspectives, social penetration theory, social information processing, and uncertainty reduction, two questions formed the foundation of the project. RQ1) Is hyper-reliance on electronically-mediated communication associated with a corresponding increase in verbal communication apprehension during face-to-face conversations? RQ2) Is there a correlation between hyper-reliance on electronically-mediated communication and the ability to develop close interpersonal relationships? A combination …

Comparative Genetic Screens In Human Cells Reveal New Regulatory Mechanisms In Wnt Signaling, Andres M. Lebensohn, Ramin Dubey, Leif Neitzel, Ofelia Tacchelly-Benites

Dartmouth Scholarship

The comprehensive understanding of cellular signaling pathways remains a challenge due to multiple layers of regulation that may become evident only when the pathway is probed at different levels or critical nodes are eliminated. To discover regulatory mechanisms in canonical WNT signaling, we conducted a systematic forward genetic analysis through reporter-based screens in haploid human cells. Comparison of screens for negative, attenuating and positive regulators of WNT signaling, mediators of R-spondin-dependent signaling and suppressors of constitutive signaling induced by loss of the tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli or casein kinase 1α uncovered new regulatory features at most levels of the …

Economic Analysis Of Charitable Donations, Moon Young Kang, Byungho Park, Sanghak Lee, Jaehwan Kim, Greg Allenby

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

This paper examines the effect of message characteristics on donation behavior using an economic model of giving. The utility of giving can come from one’s own contribution and possibly from the combined contributions of others. Donors are assumed to be constrained utility maximizers, and the message attributes affect the degree to which they react altruistically or egoistically. The model is estimated with data from an incentive-aligned study of South Korean consumers, and implications for message optimization and donor targeting are explored.

Long-Term Programs As Instruments For The Effective Management Of Public Finances: Fact Or Myth?, Marta Postuła, Anna Kawarska

European Management Studies

Long-term planning is recognized by modern science as an indispensable tool for the modern management of broadly understood finances, both private and public. It has been present for years in the financial management of many countries throughout the world. Therefore, it is reasonable to strive to adopt a similar system in relation to public finances in Poland. The sudden importance of long-term financial planning (budgeting) occurred in Poland along with its accession to the European Union. This is borne out by not only the need for social, economic, and financial national plans to take into account the common objectives of …

Mass Reduction Patterning Of Silicon-On-Oxide-Based Micromirrors, Harris J. Hall, Andrew Green, Sarah Dooley, Jason D. Schmidt, Laverne A. Starman, Derrick Langley, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Faculty Publications

It has long been recognized in the design of micromirror-based optical systems that balancing static flatness of the mirror surface through structural design with the system’s mechanical dynamic response is challenging. Although a variety of mass reduction approaches have been presented in the literature to address this performance trade, there has been little quantifiable comparison reported. In this work, different mass reduction approaches, some unique to the work, are quantifiably compared with solid plate thinning in both curvature and mass using commercial finite element simulation of a specific square silicon-on-insulator–based micromirror geometry. Other important considerations for micromirror surfaces, including surface …

Et Tu, Android?: Regulating Dangerous And Dishonest Robots, Woodrow Hartzog

Faculty Scholarship

Consumer robots like personal digital assistants, automated cars, robot companions, chore-bots, and personal drones raise common consumer protection issues, such as fraud, privacy, data security, and risks to health, physical safety, and finances. They also raise new consumer protection issues, or at least call into question how existing consumer protection regimes might be applied to such emerging technologies. Yet it is unclear which legal regimes should govern these robots and what consumer protection rules for robots should look like.

This paper argues that the FTC's grant of authority and existing jurisprudence are well-suited for protecting consumers who buy and interact …

For the monitoring of hydrometeorological variables, and more generally, for decision support systems, the instrumental in-situ measurement is crucial.

Referring to professional micrometeorological stations, there is a problem represented by the high costs of measures.

The high cost can be substantially related to the quality of the materials, to the array of industrial production processes and to the costs of skilled workers, needed for the installation and for the maintenance of the equipment.

A further problem in the development of such measuring networks is represented by "closed" products which, for structural layouts, data management and communications, are almost always referred …
