When We Grade Students’ Proofs, Do They Understand Our Feedback?, Robert C. Moore, Martha Byrne, Sarah Hanusch, Timothy Fukawa-Connelly Jan 2016

When We Grade Students’ Proofs, Do They Understand Our Feedback?, Robert C. Moore, Martha Byrne, Sarah Hanusch, Timothy Fukawa-Connelly

Faculty Publications

Instructors often write feedback on students’ proofs even if there is no expectation for the students to revise and resubmit the work. It is not known, however, what students do with that feedback or if they understand the professor’s intentions. To this end, we asked eight advanced mathematics undergraduates to respond to professor comments on four written proofs by interpreting and implementing the comments. We analyzed the student’s responses using the categories of corrective feedback for language acquisition, viewing the language of mathematical proof as a register of academic English.

Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman Jan 2016

Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman

Faculty Publications

As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrating both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, the BBC launched a season of programs, entitled Shakespeare Unlocked, most notably presenting the plays of the second tetralogy in four feature-length adaptations released under the unifying title The Hollow Crown. These plays so obviously engaged with the question of English nationalism suited a year in which the United Kingdom wrestled with British identity in a post-colonial and post-Great Recession world. Through its adaptative and filmic vocabularies, however, The Hollow Crown advances a British nationalism unresponsive to the casualties — often women and …

The Relationship Between Successful Completion And Sequential Movement In Self-Paced Distance Courses, Janine M. Lim Jan 2016

The Relationship Between Successful Completion And Sequential Movement In Self-Paced Distance Courses, Janine M. Lim

Faculty Publications

A course design question for self-paced courses includes whether or not technological measures should be used in course design to force students to follow the sequence intended by the course author. This study examined learner behavior to understand whether the sequence of student assignment submissions in a self-paced distance course is related to successful completion of the course. The study included 543 students in 89 different general education courses at a private university in the United States during a two year period. Results indicate that students who completed at least one assignment or exam out of the intended sequence of …

Improving The Visibility Of Energy Use In Home Heating In England: Thermal Images And The Role Of Visual Tailoring, Christine Boomsma, Julie Goodhew, Steve Goodhew, Sabine Pahl Jan 2016

Improving The Visibility Of Energy Use In Home Heating In England: Thermal Images And The Role Of Visual Tailoring, Christine Boomsma, Julie Goodhew, Steve Goodhew, Sabine Pahl

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This study examined the use of thermal imaging as a communication tool that allows householders to 'see' where a building is losing heat. We tested the effect of tailored and non-tailored thermal images on energy beliefs, behavioural intentions and a simple self-report behaviour question in an English field study. Householders received tailored thermal images of their home, thermal images of other homes with typical problems for the area ('non-tailored'), or information on the same typical problems in text format. A post-intervention survey (N = 233) indicated that showing occupants any thermal image (tailored or non-tailored) led to higher vividness when …

Living Together In Student Accommodation: Performances, Boundaries And Homemaking, Mark Holton Jan 2016

Living Together In Student Accommodation: Performances, Boundaries And Homemaking, Mark Holton

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Recent discussions of the geographies of students have drawn attention to the trajectories of UK students electing to leave home for university. While such debates recognise these important mobilities, little has been discussed as to how students interact within their term‐time accommodation. Through a qualitative study of the living arrangements of UK students, this paper will demonstrate that much can be drawn from focusing on the micro‐geographies of non‐local students within their term‐time homes. Student accommodation is more than simply somewhere to live. Student homes are intensely dynamic places, perhaps more so than family homes as they contain multiple, disconnected …

Pharmaceuticals In Soils Of Lower Income Countries: Physico-Chemical Fate And Risks From Wastewater Irrigation., Katherine Lees, Mark Fitzsimons, Jason Snape, Alan Tappin, Sean Comber Jan 2016

Pharmaceuticals In Soils Of Lower Income Countries: Physico-Chemical Fate And Risks From Wastewater Irrigation., Katherine Lees, Mark Fitzsimons, Jason Snape, Alan Tappin, Sean Comber

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Population growth, increasing affluence, and greater access to medicines have led to an increase in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) entering sewerage networks. In areas with high wastewater reuse, residual quantities of APIs may enter soils via irrigation with treated, partially treated, or untreated wastewater and sludge. Wastewater used for irrigation is currently not included in chemical environmental risk assessments and requires further consideration in areas with high water reuse. This study critically assesses the contemporary understanding of the occurrence and fate of APIs in soils of low and lower-middle income countries (LLMIC) in order to contribute to the development of …

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani Jan 2016

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This chapter traces some of the reasons for lack of equal gender progression. It does so through analysis of the relationship between gender and architectural education, from entry to graduation, in order to reveal how the performativity of gender at university influences an individual's prospects to acquire optimal social, cultural, and economic capital in their post-university working life. In the United Kingdom and United States women are now undertaking a vocational architectural education at university at a rate mostly equal to or greater than men. While architecture schools undertake their own internal assessments on gender split and recruitment, there has …

Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson Jan 2016

Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper examines geography’s engagements with phenomenology. Tracing phenomenology’s influence, from early humanist reflections on the lifeworld to non-representational theories of practice, the paper identifies the emergence of a distinct post-phenomenological way of thinking. However, there is currently no clear articulation of what differentiates post-phenomenology from phenomenology as a set of theories or ideas, nor is there a clear set of trajectories along which such difference can be pursued further. In response to this, the paper outlines three key elements that differentiate phenomenology from post-phenomenology and that require further exploration. First is a rethinking of intentionality as an emergent relation …

The Impact Of Corporate Governance And Its Consequences On Csr Disclosure: Empirical Evidence From Islamic Banks In Gcc Countries, Mohd Shukor Bin Harun

Plymouth Business School Theses

The main aim of this research is to analyse the CSR disclosure and examine its determinants and consequences among Islamic banks in the GCC (Gulf Countries Council). In fulfilling the research aims, annual reports of GCC Islamic banks for the period 2010- 2014 are analysed using manual content analysis, which involves 195 observations of 39 Islamic banks. The CSR disclosure index is constructed based on 11 dimensions using AAOIFI standard no 7, 2010. An ordinary least square (OLS) regression is used to examine the determinants and consequences of CSR disclosure in the sample Islamic banks. The analysis shows a very …

Plymouth Business School Theses

The higher education sector in developing countries is currently facing several challenges generated by a dynamic environment and characterised by rapid technological change and increased demand. This thesis aims to examine the direct and indirect associations between the components of the strategic management, as well as its impact on service quality of university institutions within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, this thesis tests a mediation effect regarding organisational commitment within the relationship between strategic management and service quality. This thesis employs a quantitative method, and a theoretical model is built based on thorough literature reviews concerning strategic management and …

The Impact Of Leadership Style And Organisational Culture On The Implementation Of E-Services: An Empirical Study In Saudi Arabia, Hamdi Alomiri Jan 2016

The Impact Of Leadership Style And Organisational Culture On The Implementation Of E-Services: An Empirical Study In Saudi Arabia, Hamdi Alomiri

Plymouth Business School Theses

There is a general scarcity of empirical studies investigating the impact of leadership styles on e-Government use in the service industry. This is doubly true of styles such as transformational, transactional and servant leadership. Theorised models propose that leadership style forms the desired organisational culture for implementing e-services, organisational culture being the mediator and the national culture the moderator. This research fills the empirical gap by investigating how leadership forms the organisational culture that facilitates and enhances the implementation and use of e-government in organisations in Saudi Arabia. The research was conducted through the sampling of employees in private and …

A Reconstructive Study Of Hr Practitioners’ Enactment Of Equality: The Discourses Of ‘Legal Guardianship’, Helen Mortimore Jan 2016

A Reconstructive Study Of Hr Practitioners’ Enactment Of Equality: The Discourses Of ‘Legal Guardianship’, Helen Mortimore

Plymouth Business School Theses

The thesis examines the enactment of workplace equality through an analysis of HR generalist talk. The primary data is contextualised by a review of the literature on HR, equality and diversity, and the regulatory terrain. The study is based on interviews with HR practitioners from 40 UK organisations of different sizes/sectors in 2014. The methodology underpinning the analysis is informed by a form of critical discourse analysis which considers lived experiences in their broader contexts (Edley, 2001). The findings indicate that operational HR practice in respect of equality and diversity is constituted mainly of compliance to the equality legislation. HR …

‘Precarity And Precariousness – A Study Into The Impact Of Low-Pay, Low-Skill Employment Structures On The Experiences Of Workers In The South West Of Britain, Constantine Manolchev Jan 2016

‘Precarity And Precariousness – A Study Into The Impact Of Low-Pay, Low-Skill Employment Structures On The Experiences Of Workers In The South West Of Britain, Constantine Manolchev

Plymouth Business School Theses

This is a study into the impact of precarious work, defined as low-skill and low-pay jobs, on workers in the South West of Britain. In it, I investigate the experiences of three broad groups of precarious workers: migrants, care assistants (adult and nursery) and employees working for ‘Cleanwell’, an international provider of cleaning and catering services. My approach identifies and occupies the central ground between two opposing perspectives. Along with Guy Standing (2014; 2011), I acknowledge the existence of employment structures which can be objectively described as lacking the security of meaningful pay, tenure, access to training and progression. However, …

Measuring Environmental Sustainability In Agriculture: A Composite Environmental Impact Index Approach, Ne Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman, Mf Rola-Rubzen

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The present study develops a composite environmental impact index (CEII) to evaluate the extent of environmental degradation in agriculture after successfully validating its flexibility, applicability and relevance as a tool. The CEII tool is then applied to empirically measure the extent of environmental impacts of High Yield Variety (HYV) rice cultivation in three districts of north-western Bangladesh for a single crop year (October, 2012-September, 2013). Results reveal that 27 to 69 per cent of the theoretical maximum level of environmental damage is created due to HYV rice cultivation with significant regional variations in the CEII scores, implying that policy interventions …

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes Jan 2016

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Communicating information about geological and hydrological hazards relies on appropriately worded communications targeted at the needs of the audience. But what are these needs and how does the geoscientist discern them? This paper adopts a psychological "mental models" approach to assess the public perception of the geological subsurface and surveys three communities in the south-west of England about their attitudes and representations of the geological subsurface. The findings reveal important preconceptions and misconceptions regarding the impact of hydrological systems and hazards on the geological subsurface, notably in terms of the persistent conceptualisation of underground rivers and the inferred relations between …

Education For Sustainable Development: A Movement Towards Pedagogies Of Civic Compassion, P Warwick Jan 2016

Education For Sustainable Development: A Movement Towards Pedagogies Of Civic Compassion, P Warwick

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article explores the moral imperative for a renewed vision of schooling in the twenty-first century, from the standpoint of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). ESD advocates for teaching and learning spaces underpinned by civic compassion in the sense of 'an active concern for well-being'. This paradigm of education seeks to expand the horizons of our compassion for others, calling for an education system that takes into account the need for biosphere, spatial and temporal dimensions of care for the common good. This vision of education is firstly outlined and then practically explored through an example of ESD innovation in …
