Background. We explored healthcare provider perspectives and practices regarding safer conception counseling for HIV-affected clients. Methods. We conducted semistructured interviews with 38 providers (medical and clinical officers, nurses, peer counselors, and village health workers) delivering care to HIV-infected clients across 5 healthcare centres in Mbarara District, Uganda. Interview transcripts were analyzed using content analysis. Results. Of 38 providers, 76% were women with median age 34 years (range 24–57). First, we discuss providers’ reproductive counseling practices. Emergent themes include that providers (1) assess reproductive goals of HIV-infected female clients frequently, but infrequently for male clients; (2) offer counseling focused on “family planning” …

Kinesthetic Language Learning: How An Accident Led To A Revelation, Travis West, Roger S. Nam, Amanda W. Benckhuysen Jan 2016

Kinesthetic Language Learning: How An Accident Led To A Revelation, Travis West, Roger S. Nam, Amanda W. Benckhuysen

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

This essay analyzes a critical incident that took place in a hybrid distancelearning Hebrew language class that was adapting interactive, immersion-style, kinesthetic pedagogy during the week-long face-to-face intensive portion of the class – including Total Physical Response techniques in which students respond to the language with whole-body actions, entering into the world created by the language and the particular biblical text. Memorization, performance, interactive games, songs, and skits also contribute to the immersion-style learning environment. A snafu on the final day of the week led to a serendipitous solution that demonstrated Parker Palmer’s idea of subject centered pedagogy. A brief …

"New Voices": Pentecostal Preachers In North America, 1890–1930, Leah Payne Jan 2016

"New Voices": Pentecostal Preachers In North America, 1890–1930, Leah Payne

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

From their inception in 1901, Pentecostal preachers were convinced that they were doing and experiencing something entirely new. “A new dispensation is dawning upon us,” claimed one Pentecostal journal in 1908. They spoke of their call to ministry as the “new work” that the Holy Spirit was doing. Even familiar tasks like reading the bible were changed for Pentecostal practitioners. “The Bible becomes a new book,” wrote Azusa Street Revivalists in 1907, “to those baptized with the Holy Ghost.” Pentecostal preaching was no different. “Many have received the gift of singing as well as speaking in the inspiration of the …

Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman Jan 2016

Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman

Faculty Publications

As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrating both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, the BBC launched a season of programs, entitled Shakespeare Unlocked, most notably presenting the plays of the second tetralogy in four feature-length adaptations released under the unifying title The Hollow Crown. These plays so obviously engaged with the question of English nationalism suited a year in which the United Kingdom wrestled with British identity in a post-colonial and post-Great Recession world. Through its adaptative and filmic vocabularies, however, The Hollow Crown advances a British nationalism unresponsive to the casualties — often women and …

Persuasive Strategies In A Chauvinistic Religious Discourse: The Case Of Women's Ordination, Eun-Young Julia Kim Jan 2016

Persuasive Strategies In A Chauvinistic Religious Discourse: The Case Of Women's Ordination, Eun-Young Julia Kim

Faculty Publications

Currently one of the most divisive issues in some Christian communities centers on women’s ordination. This study critically analyzes a religious discourse which defends and justifies the Southern Baptist Convention’s opposition to women’s ordination by using a sociocognitive approach as an underlying theoretical framework. The analysis aims to illustrate how a religious text both assumes and tries to formulate unified mental models to control the beliefs of the audience and promulgate dominance by assigning sovereign values to certain interpretations so that readers will understand certain texts as they see them. In doing so, the current study also hopes to demonstrate …

Empowering English Language Teachers Through History, Eun-Young Julia Kim

Faculty Publications

TESOL training programs typically offer courses in methods and pedagogy, along with other classes to equip future English language teaching (ELT) professionals with essential teaching skills and knowledge. Not as frequently offered or required, however, is a course focusing on critically examining political and philosophical aspects of ELT. This article discusses why I believe it is important for TESOL curriculums to include topics on the diachronic development and synchronic variations of the English language and to engage students in topics that would allow them to critically examine embedded power relations in ELT. By reflecting on my own classroom experience as …

Relationships with peers, parents, and God make a difference in the behavior choices of youth. If a young person spends time with peers who don’t use substances and are planning to wait until they get married to have sex, they are less likely to engage in these behaviors. In addition, if the youth has a close relationship with parents who clearly state their standards regarding substance use and premarital sex, they are less likely to practice these behaviors. Finally, when the young person has a close relationship with God, they are more likely to care about the religious standards such …

The Language Of Professional Development Leaders, Andrew Riffel, Kathleen Mary Melhuish, Eva Thanheiser Jan 2016

The Language Of Professional Development Leaders, Andrew Riffel, Kathleen Mary Melhuish, Eva Thanheiser

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Leaders in professional development (PD) initiatives (such as facilitators, principals, coaches) hold a great deal of power in their language, carrying the ability to manage meaning and frame experiences. Rather than working from interview data, this report addresses a gap in leadership research by examining the words used by leaders in their on-the-job interactions. We present an initial framework for capturing leadership language qualities at the macro level (framing the PD’s purpose) and micro level (rhetorical crafting in terms of metaphor usage, pronoun choice, and other language selections). Our data come from a larger project evaluating the efficacy of a …

Landmark Based Shape Analysis For Cerebellar Ataxia Classification And Cerebellar Atrophy Pattern Visualization, Zhen Yang, S. Mazdak Abulnaga, Aaron Carass, Bruno Jedynak, Chiadi U. Onyike, Jerry L. Prince, Multiple Additional Authors

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cerebellar dysfunction can lead to a wide range of movement disorders. Studying the cerebellar atrophy pattern associated with different cerebellar disease types can potentially help in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning. In this paper, we present a landmark based shape analysis pipeline to classify healthy control and different ataxia types and to visualize the characteristic cerebellar atrophy patterns associated with different types. A highly informative feature representation of the cerebellar structure is constructed by extracting dense homologous landmarks on the boundary surfaces of cerebellar sub-structures. A diagnosis group classifier based on this representation is built using partial least square dimension …

The Pathology Of Command And Control: A Formal Synthesis, Michael Cox Jan 2016

The Pathology Of Command And Control: A Formal Synthesis, Michael Cox

Dartmouth Scholarship

One of the most important theories in the study of environmental governance and policy is the pathology of command and control, which describes the negative consequences of top-down, technocratic governance of social and ecological systems. However, to date, this theory has been expressed somewhat inconsistently and informally in the literature, even by the seminal works that have established its importance and popularized it. This presents a problem for the sustainability science community if it cannot be sure of the precise details of one of its most important theories. Without such precision, applications and tests of various elements of the theory …

Oscillation Phase Locking And Late Erp Components Of Intracranial Hippocampal Recordings Correlate To Patient Performance In A Working Memory Task, Jonathan K. Kleen, Markus E. Testorf, David W. Roberts, Rod C. Scott Jan 2016

Oscillation Phase Locking And Late Erp Components Of Intracranial Hippocampal Recordings Correlate To Patient Performance In A Working Memory Task, Jonathan K. Kleen, Markus E. Testorf, David W. Roberts, Rod C. Scott

Dartmouth Scholarship

In working memory tasks, stimulus presentation induces a resetting of intracranial temporal lobe oscillations in multiple frequency bands. To further understand the functional relevance of this phenomenon, we investigated whether working memory performance depends on the phase precision of ongoing oscillations in the hippocampus. We recorded intra-hippocampal local field potentials in individuals performing a working memory task. Two types of trials were administered. For high memory trials presentation of a list of four letters ("List") was followed by a single letter memory probe ("Test"). Low memory load trials, consisting of four identical letters (AAAA) followed by a probe with the …

Measurement Challenges In Shared Decision Making: Putting The ‘Patient’ In Patient‐Reported Measures, Paul J. Barr, Glyn Elwyn Jan 2016

Measurement Challenges In Shared Decision Making: Putting The ‘Patient’ In Patient‐Reported Measures, Paul J. Barr, Glyn Elwyn

Dartmouth Scholarship

Measuring clinicians' shared decision-making (SDM) performance is a key requirement given the intensity of policy interest in many developed countries - yet it remains one of the most difficult methodological challenges, which is a concern for many stakeholders. In this Viewpoint Article, we investigate the development of existing patient-reported measures (PRMs) of SDM identified in a recent review. We find that patients were involved in the development of only four of the 13 measures. This lack of patient involvement in PRM development is associated with two major threats to content validity, common to all 13 PRMs of SDM: (i) an …

Cytokinin Acts Through The Auxin Influx Carrier Aux1 To Regulate Cell Elongation In The Root, Ian H. Street, Dennis Matthews, Maria Yamburkenko, Ali Sorooshzadeh Jan 2016

Cytokinin Acts Through The Auxin Influx Carrier Aux1 To Regulate Cell Elongation In The Root, Ian H. Street, Dennis Matthews, Maria Yamburkenko, Ali Sorooshzadeh

Dartmouth Scholarship

Hormonal interactions are crucial for plant development. In Arabidopsis, cytokinins inhibit root growth through effects on cell proliferation and cell elongation. Here, we define key mechanistic elements in a regulatory network by which cytokinin inhibits root cell elongation in concert with the hormones auxin and ethylene. The auxin importer AUX1 functions as a positive regulator of cytokinin responses in the root; mutation of AUX1 specifically affects the ability of cytokinin to inhibit cell elongation but not cell proliferation. AUX1 is required for cytokinin-dependent changes of auxin activity in the lateral root cap associated with the control of cell elongation. Cytokinin …

Seasonal Habitat Selection Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In A Coastal Dune Forest, Cara L. Appel Jan 2016

Seasonal Habitat Selection Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In A Coastal Dune Forest, Cara L. Appel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Wildlife-habitat relationship studies are important for understanding the factors that determine where species occur in space and time. Habitat selection by generalist species should be studied on fine spatial and temporal scales to avoid masking important differences between seasons, localities, or orders of selection. I conducted the first study of habitat use and general ecology of North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) in a coastal dune environment. Specifically, I assessed changes in body mass, home range size, and habitat selection in relation to the potential for seasonal nutritional and survival bottlenecks as reported elsewhere. Although they are considered generalists, …

The Effect Of Rest Interval Duration On The Volume Completed During A High Intensity Bench Press Exercise, Dennis J. Hernandez Jan 2016

The Effect Of Rest Interval Duration On The Volume Completed During A High Intensity Bench Press Exercise, Dennis J. Hernandez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Between set rest intervals (RI) are one of the most important variables in resistance training; however, no known research has investigated the effects of RIs greater than 5-min during strength training (>85% of 1RM). The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of three different RIs (2, 5, and 8-minute) on training volume (kg, sets x reps x resistance) and repetition sustainability during a high-intensity bench press exercise (> 85% of 1RM). Fifteen resistance trained males (mean+sd, age = 26+5 yr, height = 161+6 cm, body mass = 79+6 kg, bench press 1RM ratio = 1.39+0.1) completed …

Simulation Of Nuclear Fusion Using A One Dimensional Particle In Cell Method, Steven T. Margell Jan 2016

Simulation Of Nuclear Fusion Using A One Dimensional Particle In Cell Method, Steven T. Margell

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In this thesis several novel techniques are developed to simulate fusion events in an isotropic, electrostatic three-dimensional Deuterium-Tritium plasma. These techniques allow us to accurately predict three-dimensional collision events with a one-dimensional model while simultaneously reducing compute time via a nearest neighbor algorithm. Furthermore, a fusion model based on first principles is developed that yields an average fusion reactivity which correlates well with empirical results.
