Subjective Well-Being Among Malaysian Students, Mazni Mustapha Jan 2016

Subjective Well-Being Among Malaysian Students, Mazni Mustapha

School of Psychology Theses

The aim of the study was to examine the determinants of well-being in Malaysian students at home and overseas. Prior to the main study, interviews were conducted with seven PhD students of Malaysia studying in Plymouth, to explore their needs and values, and their adaptation experiences in terms of missing and enjoyment experiences abroad. Based on the interview findings and literature reviews, a questionnaire was developed and named as the Adaptation to Life Index, which consisted of two scales - ‘missing experience’ and ‘enjoyment experience’. A longitudinal survey was carried out using Malaysian students in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, …

Exploring The Factors Which Underpin Young Drivers' Over-Representation In Road Traffic Collisions, Lauren Weston Jan 2016

Exploring The Factors Which Underpin Young Drivers' Over-Representation In Road Traffic Collisions, Lauren Weston

School of Psychology Theses

Worldwide, young drivers are involved in more road traffic collisions than any other age group (Taubman & Katz, 2012). Comprehensive driver training and various forms of pre- and- post-test road safety interventions (RSIs) are in place, but young drivers continue to be involved in more at-fault, fatal collisions than older, newly qualified drivers (e.g. Emmerson, 2008; Braitman et al, 2008; Clarke et al, 2010). The evidence base to date is mixed regarding why young drivers are at a heightened risk of collision and so this thesis aims to provide further understanding about the factors underpinning young drivers’ engagement in risky …

An Investigation Into The Role Of Subliminal Inputs In Placebo Response, Sally A F Pearce Jan 2016

An Investigation Into The Role Of Subliminal Inputs In Placebo Response, Sally A F Pearce

School of Psychology Theses

According to the network theory of psychoneuroimmunology, (Hyland, 2011a), the placebo response is a short-term, problem solving response to a variety of inputs processed via the ‘infornet’. However, within the current infornet model of placebo response, these inputs are categorized as either conscious verbal inputs, or inputs learnt via traditional conditioning mechanisms. This thesis investigates the extent to which other ‘higher-order’ subliminal inputs may also play a part in determining placebo response. The findings presented here found no reliable effect of subliminal priming information on placebo response in a short-term placebo context. Further research is needed to determine if subliminally …

Vawa 2013'S Right To Appointed Counsel On Tribal Court Proceedings- A Rising Tide That Lifts All Boats Or A Procedural Windfall For Non-Indian Defendants, Jordan Gross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This Article addresses a question that seems like it would be easy to answer, but is actually quite complex-when is an indigent defendant entitled to counsel at the public's expense in the United States? The answer is complex because it depends on what the indigent is charged with, what sentence he receives, and who prosecutes him. The Sixth Amendment guarantees an accused the assistance of counsel in "all criminal prosecutions."' The Supreme Court has said that the Sixth Amendment right to counsel includes the right to effective assistance of counsel, and the right to appointed counsel at public expense for …

High/ Low Context Communication And Therapeutic Working Alliance Among Asian Americans, Yoshitaro Oba Jan 2016

High/ Low Context Communication And Therapeutic Working Alliance Among Asian Americans, Yoshitaro Oba

Theses and Dissertations

Asian Americans utilize both high and low context communication styles depending on their values and cultural backgrounds. Their styles of communication are unique cultural factors and individualized by their level of acculturation. This study explored how those communication styles could contribute to the process of forming therapeutic relationships. The results indicated that communication styles were associated with levels of acculturation, help seeking attitudes for mental health professionals, and therapeutic working alliance. In addition, step wise multiple regression analysis indicated that interpersonal sensitivity in communication style and help seeking attitudes were predictor for therapeutic working alliance. These findings indicate how Asian …

Theory Through Practice: An Action Research Study Of Learning To Teach In Elementary Music Methods, Rebecca Calvert Petrik Jan 2016

Theory Through Practice: An Action Research Study Of Learning To Teach In Elementary Music Methods, Rebecca Calvert Petrik

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this action research study was to improve an elementary music methods course’s impact on preservice teachers’ learning to teach. The central problem was identified as weak connectivity between course learning at the beginning of the semester and application in practicum settings at the end of the course. Reconnaissance including self study and study of the field led to changes in the sequencing of course learning and practicum teaching. The course was restructured to support the preservice music teachers through a graduated progression of practicum experiences prescheduled across the entire sixteen-week semester. Each teaching experience was grounded with …

The Impact Of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (Tavi) On Cognition: Evaluating The Relationship Between Changes In Cognitive Function, Cerebral Injury, Physical Ability, And Mood, Jaclyn Reckow Jan 2016

The Impact Of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (Tavi) On Cognition: Evaluating The Relationship Between Changes In Cognitive Function, Cerebral Injury, Physical Ability, And Mood, Jaclyn Reckow

Theses and Dissertations

Aortic stenosis is a cardiovascular disease affecting 2 to 4% of U.S. adults over

age 65 years old (Freeman & Otto, 2006). Aortic stenosis causes angina and syncope

eventually leading to heart failure and death (Otto, 2006). Transcatheter aortic valve

implantation (TAVI) is an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with

high surgical mortality risk (Kappetein, 2013). The TAVI is associated with increased

cerebral injury, with silent ischemia reported in up to 90% of TAVI patients (Samim et

al., 2015). The present study examines the relationship between cerebral injury, cognitive

changes, and quality of life in TAVI patients. …

Duties To Organizational Clients, William H. Simon Jan 2016

Duties To Organizational Clients, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

Loyalty to an organizational client means fidelity to the substantive legal structure that constitutes it. Although this principle is not controversial in the abstract, it is commonly ignored in professional discourse and doctrine. This article explains the basic notion of organizational loyalty and identifies some mistaken tendencies in discourse and doctrine, especially the "Managerialist Fallacy" that leads lawyers to conflate the client organization with its senior managers. The article then applies the basic notion to some hard cases, concluding with a critical appraisal of the rationale for confidentiality with organizational clients.

Contracting Trademark Fame?, Leah Chan Grinvald

Scholarly Works

Contracts abound in today's highly digitized society. Did you snap a pic and upload it to Instagram? You entered into a contract. Did you check your friends' statuses on Facebook? Yep, you also entered into a contract. Did you know you entered into a contract or even if you were aware of this fact, did you know the terms to which you agreed? Probably not. But despite this, we are all obligated by these contracts, so long as we are somehow made aware that we could read the terms at some point if we had the inclination to do so. …

The Early Years Of First Amendment Lochnerism, Jeremy K. Kessler Jan 2016

The Early Years Of First Amendment Lochnerism, Jeremy K. Kessler

Faculty Scholarship

From Citizens United to Hobby Lobby, civil libertarian challenges to the regulation of economic activity are increasingly prevalent. Critics of this trend invoke the specter of Lochner v. New York. They suggest that the First Amendment, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and other legislative "conscience clauses" are being used to resurrect the economically libertarian substantive due process jurisprudence of the early twentieth century. Yet the worry that aggressive judicial enforcement of the First Amendment might erode democratic regulation of the economy and enhance the economic power of private actors has a long history. As this Article demonstrates, anxieties …

The Wolf At The Door: The Impact Of Hedge Fund Activism On Corporate Governance, John C. Coffee Jr., Darius Palia Jan 2016

The Wolf At The Door: The Impact Of Hedge Fund Activism On Corporate Governance, John C. Coffee Jr., Darius Palia

Faculty Scholarship

Hedge fund activism has recently spiked, almost hyperbolically. No one disputes this, and most view it as a significant change. But, their reasons differ. Some see activist hedge funds as the natural champions of dispersed and diversified shareholders, who are less capable of collective action in their own interest. A key fact about activist hedge funds is that they are undiversified and typically hold significant stakes in the companies that comprise their portfolios. Given their larger stakes and focused holdings, they are less subject to the “rational apathy” that characterizes more diversified and even indexed investors, such as pension and …

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic diseases in infants, whose parents and siblings do not have allergy, is approximately 10 % and reaches 20-30 % in those with an allergic first-degree relative. Intestinal microbiota may modulate immunologic and inflammatory systemic responses and, thus, influence development of sensitization and allergy. Prebiotics - non-digestible oligosaccharides that stimulate growth of probiotic bacteria - have been reported to modulate immune responses and their supplementation has been proposed as a preventive intervention.

OBJECTIVE: The World Allergy Organization (WAO) convened a guideline panel to develop evidence-based recommendations about the use of prebiotics in the prevention of allergy. …

BACKGROUND: Excessive sitting has been linked to poor health. It is unknown whether reducing total sitting time or increasing brief sit-to-stand transitions is more beneficial. We conducted a randomized pilot study to assess whether it is feasible for working and non-working older adults to reduce these two different behavioral targets.

METHODS: Thirty adults (15 workers and 15 non-workers) age 50-70 years were randomized to one of two conditions (a 2-hour reduction in daily sitting or accumulating 30 additional brief sit-to-stand transitions per day). Sitting time, standing time, sit-to-stand transitions and stepping were assessed by a thigh worn inclinometer (activPAL). Participants …

Contraceptive Provision To Adolescent Females Prescribed Teratogenic Medications., Stephani L. Stancil, Melissa K. Miller, Holley Briggs, Daryl Lynch, Kathy Goggin, Gregory Kearns

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rates of adult women receiving contraceptive provision when simultaneously prescribed a known teratogen are alarmingly low. The prevalence of this behavior among pediatric providers and their adolescent patients is unknown. The objective of this study was to describe pediatric provider behaviors for prescribing teratogens concurrently with counseling, referral, and/or prescribing of contraception (collectively called contraceptive provision) in the adolescent population.

METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted examining visits in 2008-2012 by adolescents aged 14 to 25 years in which a known teratogen (US Food and Drug Administration pregnancy risk category D or X) was prescribed. The electronic …

OBJECTIVE: Reduce central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rates 15% over 12 months in children's hospital NICUs. Use orchestrated testing as an approach to identify important CLABSI prevention practices.

METHODS: Literature review, expert opinion, and benchmarking were used to develop clinical practice recommendations for central line care. Four existing CLABSI prevention strategies (tubing change technique, hub care monitoring, central venous catheter access limitation, and central venous catheter removal monitoring) were identified for study. We compared the change in CLABSI rates from baseline throughout the study period in 17 participating centers. Using orchestrated testing, centers were then placed into 1 of 8 …

Whole-Genome Sequencing And Disability In The Nicu: Exploring Practical And Ethical Challenges., Michael J. Deem Jan 2016

Whole-Genome Sequencing And Disability In The Nicu: Exploring Practical And Ethical Challenges., Michael J. Deem

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Clinical whole-genome sequencing (WGS) promises to deliver faster diagnoses and lead to better management of care in the NICU. However, several disability rights advocates have expressed concern that clinical use of genetic technologies may reinforce and perpetuate stigmatization of and discrimination against disabled persons in medical and social contexts. There is growing need, then, for clinicians and bioethicists to consider how the clinical use of WGS in the newborn period might exacerbate such harms to persons with disabilities. This article explores ways to extend these concerns to clinical WGS in neonatal care. By considering these perspectives during the early phases of …

What is the best way to care for a child with severe neurologic impairment who seems to be dying and is in intractable pain? Can we give sedation as we remove life support? Is it ethically permissible to hasten death? In the United States, 5 states have legalized assisted suicide (although only for competent adults). In Belgium and the Netherlands, euthanasia is legal for children under some circumstances. We present a case in which parents and doctors face difficult decisions about palliative care. Experts from Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United States then discuss how they would respond to such …
