The Role Of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, And Emotion Regulation As Protective Factors Against Disordered Eating In A Sample Of University Students, Lisa Paylo Meyer Jan 2016

The Role Of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, And Emotion Regulation As Protective Factors Against Disordered Eating In A Sample Of University Students, Lisa Paylo Meyer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although eating disorders and related interventions have been heavily researched, less is known about potentially protective variables, including self-compassion, mindfulness, and emotion regulation. It is important to understand these constructs and their relationship to eating disorder symptoms because such factors may prevent these disorders in at-risk individuals and aid in more successful psychotherapeutic outcomes. Independent theories related to these variables and their relationship to disordered eating have been postulated, but not yet combined into a single model. In this study, 100 university students completed self-report surveys that were analyzed using a Path Analysis (PA) method. This method tested an integrated …

Spatial Redistribution Of Organic Phosphorus In Hay And Grass Pastures Of Eastern West Virginia Following Longterm Animal Manure Applications, Michael B. Harman Jan 2016

Spatial Redistribution Of Organic Phosphorus In Hay And Grass Pastures Of Eastern West Virginia Following Longterm Animal Manure Applications, Michael B. Harman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was conceived to investigate the fate of organic P (Po) in typical hay and grass pasture of eastern West Virginia. It is not uncommon in this region of West Virginia for hay and grass pastures to receive annual applications of animal manure, often on a nitrogen basis. As P management has evolved, many farms in the region have begun to use management tools such as a P index to continue use of animal manure as N fertilizer. However, many hay and grass pastures in the region already have a high degree of P saturation. There are reasonable expectations …

Investigating Continuously Updated History Matching Using Smart Proxy (Surrogate Reservoir Model), Qin He Jan 2016

Investigating Continuously Updated History Matching Using Smart Proxy (Surrogate Reservoir Model), Qin He

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In oil and gas industry, quick decisions on reservoir management have a huge impact on business success. Typically, reservoir simulation is used to predict field performance and analyze uncertainties for assistance on decision making, while history matching is a key step of reservoir simulation, which is a process of model adjustment and simulation runs with different reservoir parameter settings until the difference between simulated data and historical data reaches minima. An efficient reservoir simulation model must be the one that can predict reservoir performance and update history matching results continuously by modifying reservoir model as long as new data becomes …

Attachment, Coping Style, And Perceived Stress In University Students, Erin L. Higgenbotham Jan 2016

Attachment, Coping Style, And Perceived Stress In University Students, Erin L. Higgenbotham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Attachment theory suggests that previous experiences direct one's interpretations of potentially stressful events and one's reaction to these events. As university students interact with a novel environment and face new demands, they may experience elevated levels of stress. Dependent on what resources they feel are available to them, they might feel confident in addressing these challenges, or they may believe they cannot meet the demands of the college environment. This perception of ability or inability can affect personal and academic success. Using attachment theory as a foundation, this study investigated the relationships among students' attachment dynamics, coping styles, and perceived …

Effects Of Anti-Viral Acute Phase Response On Hippocampal Glutamate Regulation, Holly C. Hunsberger Jan 2016

Effects Of Anti-Viral Acute Phase Response On Hippocampal Glutamate Regulation, Holly C. Hunsberger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A large body of clinical evidence suggests that viral infections in the periphery can exacerbate neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's, disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and seizures. The underlying mechanisms of these conditions involve the activation of the acute phase response (APR), part of the innate immune system, which recognizes viral molecular patterns. As neighboring cells become infected, inflammatory mediators are released into the bloodstream and relayed to the central nervous system where they produce a "mirror" inflammatory response. To induce the APR, polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (PIC), a viral mimetic, is commonly used. PIC produces a robust and transient …

Hardwood Floricane Blackberry Cuttings & Production Of Primocane Blackberry In North Dakota, Abigail Ruth Debner Jan 2016

Hardwood Floricane Blackberry Cuttings & Production Of Primocane Blackberry In North Dakota, Abigail Ruth Debner

Plant Sciences

Blackberry (Rubus L. subgenus Rubus, Watson) is not a commercially produced crop in North Dakota since the available floricane cultivars are not winter hardy. Two experiments were performed to evaluate alternative methods of production for commercial use. The first experiment evaluated rooting of floricane-blackberry hardwood cuttings, which could be used in an annual production system. Various cultivars, auxin treatments, and rooting methods were used to determine the best adventitious root production. Rooting success was cultivar dependent with regard to auxin concentration and low results were observed overall. The second experiment evaluated practices to improve yield in four primocane-fruiting blackberry cultivars. …

Physician–Patient Communication About Sexual Functioning In Patients With Multiple Sclerosis, Lara M. Stepleman, Eliot J. Lopez, Lauren A. Stutts, William H. Hudson, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Rebecca Han Jan 2016

Physician–Patient Communication About Sexual Functioning In Patients With Multiple Sclerosis, Lara M. Stepleman, Eliot J. Lopez, Lauren A. Stutts, William H. Hudson, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Rebecca Han

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Sexual dysfunction is quite common among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS); however, severity of dysfunction alone does not account for the tremendous variation in sexual satisfaction across individuals living with MS. Individual characteristics, relationships with intimate partners, and environmental factors all likely contribute to the multidimensional experience of sexual satisfaction. Health care provider variables, including how one communicates with providers about sexual concerns, may also be influential. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that are associated with patients’ sex-related communications with their MS physicians and to overall patient sexual satisfaction. Individuals in an MS clinic (n = …

Said I, But You Have No Choice: Why A Lawyer Must Ethically Honor A Client's Decision About Mental Health Treatment Even If It Is Not What S/He Would Have Chosen, Michael L. Perlin, Naomi Weinstein Jan 2016

Said I, But You Have No Choice: Why A Lawyer Must Ethically Honor A Client's Decision About Mental Health Treatment Even If It Is Not What S/He Would Have Chosen, Michael L. Perlin, Naomi Weinstein

Articles & Chapters

This paper addresses a remarkably under-considered topic: the ethical standards for lawyers representing persons with mental disabilities. Although there is an extensive body of literature endorsing “zealous advocacy” as the standard for the criminal defense lawyer in “ordinary” cases, there is virtually no literature (or case law) on this question in this context.

Our thesis is simple. We reject the model of “paternalism/best interests” that is regularly substituted for a traditional legal advocacy position, and a substitution that is rarely questioned. We believe this presumption flies in the face of statutory law, constitutional law, and international human rights law, and …

Rotating Cross-Arm And Winter Row Covers For Floricane Blackberry (Rubus Subgenus Rubus Watson) Production In North Dakota, David Charles Mettler Jan 2016

Rotating Cross-Arm And Winter Row Covers For Floricane Blackberry (Rubus Subgenus Rubus Watson) Production In North Dakota, David Charles Mettler

Plant Sciences

Blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson) production has potential to expand into North Dakota, but this will only occur with the evaluation of new cultivars and overwintering protection methods. Ten cultivars under four row cover treatments were evaluated for hardiness, vegetative growth, yield, and factors affecting fruit quality. Thermo-couples monitored air temperature under each treatment. Results indicate that the treatments differed in their ability to moderate winter air temperatures. Row covers had little effect on growth but differences were found between cultivars. The thermal blanket with corn stover resulted in significantly higher yield and more berries, but row covers did not …

A Novel Genetic Linkage Map Of Chokecherry (Prunus Virginiana L.) And Qtl Mapping For X-Disease (Candidatus Phytoplasma Pruni) Resistance, Ryan Rae Lenz Jan 2016

A Novel Genetic Linkage Map Of Chokecherry (Prunus Virginiana L.) And Qtl Mapping For X-Disease (Candidatus Phytoplasma Pruni) Resistance, Ryan Rae Lenz

Plant Sciences

A novel chokecherry genetic linkage map was constructed using 565 molecular markers and a previously published mapping population (n=101). Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana L.) is a potential model for genetic research of phytoplasmic diseases because of its natural resistance to X-disease (Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni). The novel chokecherry map was developed using JoinMap 4.0 and contains a complete set of 16 linkage groups. In total, the map spans a genetic distance of 2,172 cM with an average marker density of 3.97 cM. Three significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with X-disease resistance were identified on linkage groups 15, 5, and 4 contributing …

Improving Efficacy Of Metribuzin And Rimsulfuron In Potato Production, Adam Miller Winchester Jan 2016

Improving Efficacy Of Metribuzin And Rimsulfuron In Potato Production, Adam Miller Winchester

Plant Sciences

Rimsulfuron and metribuzin are postemergence herbicides used to control broadleaf weeds in potato and are applied with adjuvants to improve efficacy. Postemergence weed control often coincides with fungicide treatments. Therefore, studies were conducted to determine the effect of adjuvants or fungicides (chlorothalonil or mancozeb) plus metribuzin and rimsulfuron on weed control, potato safety and yield. Common sunflower and common lambsquarters visual control was ≥ 91% when metribuzin (420 and 210 g ha-1) plus rimsulfuron (26 and 14 g ha-1) combinations were applied with or without fungicides. Past the four leaf stage, metribuzin (340 g ha-1) and rimsulfuron (21 g ha-1) …

Simulated Glyphosate Drift Effects On 'Red Norland' Commercial And Seed Potato Industries, Amanda Crook Jan 2016

Simulated Glyphosate Drift Effects On 'Red Norland' Commercial And Seed Potato Industries, Amanda Crook

Plant Sciences

Field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015 to evaluate effects of glyphosate drift on ‘Red Norland’ potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown for commercial and seed industries. Glyphosate drift was simulated by applying sub-lethal doses during the growth stages of tuber initiation (TI), early tuber bulking (EB), and late tuber bulking (LB). Sub-lethal glyphosate doses applied to mother plants had the greatest effect on daughter tubers during TI, resulting in high tuber sets and increased unmarketable tubers. Glyphosate applied to mother plants resulted in residue in the daughter tubers. When these tubers were used as seed, glyphosate …

Symmetric Protoplast Fusion In Interserial Syringa (Oleaceae) Hybridization, Nathan Allen Maren Jan 2016

Symmetric Protoplast Fusion In Interserial Syringa (Oleaceae) Hybridization, Nathan Allen Maren

Plant Sciences

Few other woody plants embody the preeminence of temperate woody plants in garden cultivation like the lilacs. In spite of their relationship, the trees lack the diversity of cultivated floral forms observed within the shrub lineages. Typical selection and cross-pollination schemes within the tree lilacs or between trees and shrubs have failed to yield the diversity of colors and fragrances on a tree form. With somatic fusion in Citrus spp. as a guideline for Syringa spp. protoplast isolation and culture, experiments were designed to optimize the conditions through somatic fusion. Protoplast isolation experiments revealed yield increases with increased exposure to …

Capitalism And Risk: Concepts, Consequences, And Ideologies, Edward A. Purcell Jan 2016

Capitalism And Risk: Concepts, Consequences, And Ideologies, Edward A. Purcell

Articles & Chapters

Politically charged claims about both "capitalism" and "risk" became increasingly insistent in the late twentieth century. The end of the post-World War II boom in the 1970s and the subsequent breakup of the Soviet Union inspired fervent new commitments to capitalist ideas and institutions. At the same time structural changes in the American economy and expanded industrial development across the globe generated sharpening anxieties about the risks that those changes entailed. One result was an outpouring of roseate claims about capitalism and its ability to control those risks, including the use of new techniques of "risk management" to tame financial …

Merchants And Thieves, Hungry For Power: Prosecutorial Misconduct And Passive Judicial Complicity In Death Penalty Trials Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2016

Merchants And Thieves, Hungry For Power: Prosecutorial Misconduct And Passive Judicial Complicity In Death Penalty Trials Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

In spite of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Ford v. Wainwright (1986), Atkins v. Virginia (2002), and Hall v. Florida (2014), persons with severe psychosocial and intellectual disabilities continue to be given death sentences, in some cases leading to actual execution. Although the courts have been aware of this for decades -- dating back at least to the infamous Ricky Rector case in Arkansas -- these base miscarriages of justice continue and show no sign of abating. Scholars have written clearly and pointedly on this issue (certainly, more frequently since the Atkins decision in 2002), but little has changed.

"Mr. Bad Example": Why Lawyers Need To Embrace Therapeutic Jurisprudence To Root Out Sanism In The Representation Of Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2016

"Mr. Bad Example": Why Lawyers Need To Embrace Therapeutic Jurisprudence To Root Out Sanism In The Representation Of Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Litigants with mental disabilities are taken less seriously by their own lawyers, trivialized by opposing counsel, and disparaged by judges. This is largely a result of “sanism,” an irrational prejudice of the same quality and character of other irrational prejudices such as racism, sexism or homophobia. Recognizing and combatting sanism creates extra burdens on lawyers who do seek to provide effective counsel for this population. Such lawyers need special tools to combat sanism, and we believe that lawyering skills rooted in therapeutic jurisprudence provide the best foundation through which to create a positive psychology of persuasion in this representation. Our …

Infinity Goes On Trial: Sanism, Pretextuality, And The Representation Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2016

Infinity Goes On Trial: Sanism, Pretextuality, And The Representation Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This paper, presented to the mid-winter meeting of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (Austin, TX, 2/18/16), explains why it is essential for lawyers representing criminal defendants with mental disabilities to understand the meanings and contexts of sanism - a largely invisible and largely socially acceptable irrational prejudice of the same quality and character of other irrational prejudices that cause (and are reflected in) prevailing social attitudes of racism, sexism, homophobia, and ethnic bigotry - and pretextuality - the means by which courts regularly accept (either implicitly or explicitly) testimonial dishonesty, countenance liberty deprivations in disingenuous ways that bear …
