Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cerebrovascular diseases are any pathological conditions that are caused by disruptions or alterations in the blood supply to the brain. The brain, which is only 2% of body mass, constantly requires a minimum of 20% of cardiac output to meet its unique metabolic demands. Cerebral tissue relies on aerobic respiration and therefore requires a constant, steady supply of blood to provide oxygen and glucose to make ATP. Insufficient perfusion of the brain, which occurs as a result of reduced or obstructed blood flow, results in cerebral ischemia; ischemic neurons quickly deplete their available ATP and die if blood flow is …
The Feasibility Of A Home Telenutrition Intervention For Weight Reduction In Men In West Virginia, Michelle Campion
The Feasibility Of A Home Telenutrition Intervention For Weight Reduction In Men In West Virginia, Michelle Campion
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: West Virginia (WV) has one of the highest national rates of obesity, especially among middle-aged men, and one of the lowest Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) ratios per capita. Providing nutrition advice via teleconferencing may allow obese WV middle-aged men to overcome access barriers that are preventing them from overcoming obesity. However, before large-scale interventions can be effectively conducted, the feasibility must be assessed.;Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a home telenutrition weight-loss program using videoconferencing among obese men in WV. Feasibility is assessed through technical difficulties tracked throughout the intervention and through a …

Ecological Effects Of Forest Canopy Disturbance On The Understory Plant, American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.), Jennifer L. Chandler
Ecological Effects Of Forest Canopy Disturbance On The Understory Plant, American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.), Jennifer L. Chandler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historical accounts suggest that American ginseng was once far more abundant than it is today, and extensive changes in forest canopy structure and ginseng habitat caused by clearcut timber harvest occurred coincidentally to the precipitous decline in abundance. The presence of natural American ginseng populations after widespread clearcuts suggests that ginseng can survive under sparse canopies, and the presence of ginseng in the second growth forests common today suggest that ginseng can survive under dense canopies. However, performance may not be optimal at either end of the disturbance spectrum, and the net effect of direct and indirect anthropogenic canopy disturbances …

Three Essays On Decomposition Analysis Of The Territorial Co 2 Emissions And The Emissions Embodiment In Trade Attributable To Consumption Of Service-Oriented Economies, Chairat Choesawan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the pace of globalization, the rapid growth in international trade has led to a widespread perception of increasing CO2 embodied emissions. As the fragmentation of international production has become a dominant feature of modern international trade, there is a vibrant debate over how embodied emissions should be attributed and allocated among economies. To contribute to the debate on emission allocations and mitigation effort comparisons, it is important to consistently investigate the structures of carbon transfers across global economies. The role of carbon transfer structures in affecting mitigation efforts can be explored as part of the consequences of various emission …

Using reception history as a historiographical lens, this study traces the development and maturation of critical language used to describe selected flute works from 1971 to present that include extended playing techniques in addition to theatrical elements specified by the composer. Only English-language documentation is examined, and the majority of these items are reviews. The works used as case studies are George Crumb's Vox Balaenae (1971), Toru Takemitsu's Voice (1971), Karlheinz Stockhausen's Flautina (1989), and Marcos Balter's Descent from Parnassus (2012).;The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) Define the role of temporality in relation to the developmental arc of …
Endocannabinoid Modulation Of Secretory And Inflammatory Causes Of Gastric Pathology, Molly S. Crowe
Endocannabinoid Modulation Of Secretory And Inflammatory Causes Of Gastric Pathology, Molly S. Crowe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common analgesic drugs that also cause well-known, negative gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. The specific physiological mechanism(s) of NSAID-induced GI damage are unknown, and are likely due to multiple causes. The most studied components include: increased gastric acid secretions, inflammation of the gastric epithelium, and increased gastric motility. Currently, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) antacids are used by chronic NSAID users, with the expectation that decreasing gastric acid output will reduce gastric epithelial irritation. However, PPIs are associated with side effects like infection, gastric polyps, and dementia. Therefore, new gastroprotective treatments that prevent NSAID-induced gastropathy are needed. …
Young Adult Daughters And Their Parents: Communication About Workcareer And Family, Rita Daniels
Young Adult Daughters And Their Parents: Communication About Workcareer And Family, Rita Daniels
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Employing adult daughters' (N = 254) perspectives of their communication, relational quality, and identities with and surrounding their relationships with parents, I bridge organizational and family communication's scholarship realms to address family socialization regarding work/career and family. Specifically, I examine: (a) the content and context of memorable messages about work and/or family; (b) the connection between daughters' closeness to parents and daughters' likelihood to transmit these messages; and (c) the impact of mothers' socialization messages about work/career and family on daughters' personal, relational, and enacted identities (identity layers within the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI; Hecht (1993)). Using both online …

Immersive Geodesign: Exploring The Built Environment Through The Coupling Of Geodesign, 3d Modeling, And Immersive Geography, Marvin Davis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
GeoDesign is a relatively new field that serves as a repurposing of many different disciplines concerned with design decisions about the built environment. More specifically, GeoDesign represents a coupling of urban planning concepts with the analytical capabilities of GIS. While GIS has been used in planning mostly in the two-dimensional realm, the built environment is three-dimensional and challenges GIS in the handling of the vertical dimension, notably in floor-by-floor uses in mixed-use developments, basement-level parking, light capture, and intervisibility between structures. This research advances GeoDesign by addressing these three-dimensional issues through the utilization of highly-detailed 3D models using Trimble SketchUp, …

Emerging adults in America are avid users of media, including magazines and pornographic film. Use of this media is associated with body dissatisfaction and reduced sexual satisfaction. However, existing research has not examined media use, body dissatisfaction and sexual satisfaction within the same study. Additionally, the effects of pornographic film use on body image have not been extensively studied, and existing research does not adequately consider how reasons for use might relate to effects of viewing this type of media. The present study tests an integrated model of the relationships among media use, body dissatisfaction and sexual satisfaction and examines …
The Effect Of Parental Warmth On Girls' Drive For Thinness: Do Both Parents Matter?, Maegan Elizabeth Jones
The Effect Of Parental Warmth On Girls' Drive For Thinness: Do Both Parents Matter?, Maegan Elizabeth Jones
Human Development and Family Science
Recent research has suggested that both maternal and paternal warmth may play a role in the development of drive for thinness in girls. This study used 115 adolescent girls’ self-reports to examine the impact of the combined effect of parental warmth and pressure to be thin on adolescent girls’ drive for thinness, dependent on whether or not parents had similar or differing levels of warmth. Using path analysis, results suggested that when parents had differing levels of warmth, the relationship between warmth and drive for thinness was fully mediated by pressure to be thin. However, when parents had similar levels …

Perceived Believability Of Televised Green Advertising, Linda Jo Warren
Perceived Believability Of Televised Green Advertising, Linda Jo Warren
AMTP Proceedings 2016
Consumers are typically skeptical and cynical of advertising claims for products and generally disbelieve most advertised information. Believability of advertisers’ claims is crucial for consumer adoption of products, but consumers’ environmental imagination should be assessed to enhance believability of green marketing claims. Consumer belief in an advertised product is nearly essential to prompt the consumer to purchase. This paper examines the perceptions of consumers and their believability of specifically green versus non-green televised advertisements. The FTC considers not only a product in its rulings, but also the packaging, formulations and disposal of the product. Consumer belief of advertising relating demographic, …

TRPV ion channels are directly activated by sensory stimuli and participate in thermo-, mechano- and chemo-sensation. They are also hypothesized to respond to endogenous agonists that would modulate sensory responses. Here, we show that the nicotinamide (NAM) form of vitamin B3 is an agonist of a Caenorhabditis elegans TRPV channel. Using heterologous expression in Xenopus oocytes, we demonstrate that NAM is a soluble agonist for a channel consisting of the well-studied OSM-9 TRPV subunit and relatively uncharacterized OCR-4 TRPV subunit as well as the orthologous Drosophila Nan-Iav TRPV channel, and we examine stoichiometry of subunit assembly. Finally, we show that …

Emotions Involved In Shopping At The Airport, Alexis Tymkiw, Jamye Foster
AMTP Proceedings 2016
This paper examines the emotional motivations that drive consumers to shop at airport retailers. The number of passengers served by airports increases each year, while more and more security measures are being implemented (Travel & Tourism Market Research Handbook, 2013). Travelers are required to arrive for flights earlier, thus spend much more time in the airport environment than ever before. In addition, airport retailing is a rapidly growing segment that has seen a great deal of change over the last couple of decades (Airport Council International, 2012). With expanded retail areas, many airports are beginning to resemble shopping centers. However, …

Beyond The What And How: Why Parents Want To Know About Their Adolescents' Lives., Elizabeth Yale Babskie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As adolescents spend more time away from home and increasingly engage in unsupervised activities, parents are challenged with allowing their children more responsibility while still promoting positive youth development (Smetana, Campione-Barr, & Metzger, 2006). Extant research shows that parents continue to play an important roll in facilitating positive adolescent development through their knowledge of what their adolescent children are doing and whom they are with when away from home or school (Racz & McMahon, 2011). Recent research has focused on understanding the sources of parents’ knowledge and has identified both parentdriven (rules, solicitation, indirect, covert) and adolescent-driven (disclosure, secrecy, concealment) …
