Foraging Ecology Of The Campbell Albatross: Individual Specialisation And Fishery Interactions, Lisa Ann Sztukowski Jan 2016

Foraging Ecology Of The Campbell Albatross: Individual Specialisation And Fishery Interactions, Lisa Ann Sztukowski

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Most albatrosses are critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable due to the deleterious impact of fisheries, pollution, introduced species, habitat alteration, and climate change. Foraging behaviour influences many aspects of seabird biology, and a detailed understanding of foraging ecology is required to better predict the impacts of significant changes to the marine environment. Campbell Albatross (Thalassarche impavida) is a threatened endemic, confined to a small number of locations on Campbell Island, New Zealand and was recently split from the closely related Black-browed Albatross (T. melanophrys). We currently lack much basic information on the foraging behaviour of this species, hindering our ability …

Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation Of Syrian Maize With Anti-Stress Genes, Ayman Almerei Jan 2016

Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation Of Syrian Maize With Anti-Stress Genes, Ayman Almerei

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Agrobacterium is widely considered, when suitably modified, to be the most effective vector for gene transfer into plant cells. For a long time, many cereals crops (monocotyledonous plants) were recalcitrant species to genetic modification, mainly as a result of their recalcitrance to in-vitro regeneration and their resistance to Agrobacterium infection. However, recently Agrobacterium-mediated transformation has been used to transform monocot crops such as maize (Zea mays) but with severe restrictions on genotype suitability. This study was carried out to evaluate the transformation amenability of 2 Syrian maize varieties and 2 hybrids in comparison with the hybrid line Hi II by …

Mental Workload In Medicine: Foundations, Applications, Open Problems, Challenges And Future Perspectives, Luca Longo Jan 2016

Mental Workload In Medicine: Foundations, Applications, Open Problems, Challenges And Future Perspectives, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Mental workload is a design concept borrowed from Ergonomics with a significant adoption in the aviation and automobile industries. Nowadays, the consideration of this construct is also taking place in many modern clinical working environments for designing interacting and complex systems that impose ever greater cognitive demand on operators and less physical load. Measuring mental workload is essential for improving the interaction human-system, enhancing performance, reducing the operator’s error and increasing safety. However, defining, measuring, assessing mental workload and understanding how this impinges on performance are still open problems. This secondary research is firstly aimed at introducing the construct of …

Abstract The issues of cyberbullying and online harassment have gained considerable coverage in the last number of years. Social media providers need to be able to detect abusive content both accurately and efficiently in order to protect their users. Our aim is to investigate the application of core text mining techniques for the automatic detection of abusive content across a range of social media sources include blogs, forums, media-sharing, Q&A and chat - using datasets from Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Kongregate, Formspring and Slashdot. Using supervised machine learning, we compare alternative text representations and dimension reduction approaches, including feature selection and …

Modeling Mental Workload Via Rule-Based Expert System: A Comparison With Nasa-Tlx & Workload Profile, Lucas Rizzo, Sarah Jane Delany, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo Jan 2016

Modeling Mental Workload Via Rule-Based Expert System: A Comparison With Nasa-Tlx & Workload Profile, Lucas Rizzo, Sarah Jane Delany, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo

Conference papers

In the last few decades several fields have made use of the construct of human mental workload (MWL) for system and task design as well as for assessing human performance. Despite this interest, MWL remains a nebulous concept with multiple definitions and measurement techniques. State-of-the-art models of MWL are usually ad-hoc, considering different pools of pieces of evidence aggregated with different inference strategies. In this paper the aim is to deploy a rule-based expert system as a more structured approach to model and infer MWL. This expert system is built upon a knowledge-base of an expert and transates into computable …

A Mixed Methods Case Study Exploring Simulation And Caring In Nursing Education, Carla Armstead Harmon Jan 2016

A Mixed Methods Case Study Exploring Simulation And Caring In Nursing Education, Carla Armstead Harmon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Current research in nursing education suggests a shift from traditional didactic transmission methods to student-centered pedagogies to prepare nursing students with substantive knowledge necessary for competent practice in a complex healthcare environment. Simulation has emerged as a pedagogy that offers students the opportunity to critically think, solve problems, and care for diverse patients in a nonthreatening, safe environment. As the use of simulation increases, a concern is whether or not it can hinder the development of caring behaviors necessary for competent and compassionate nursing practice. This research was a study of nursing students’ descriptions of the simulation experience, and perceptions …

Tracing The Development Of Willie Stark And Its Place In American Opera, Betsy Marie Uschkrat Jan 2016

Tracing The Development Of Willie Stark And Its Place In American Opera, Betsy Marie Uschkrat

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Highly praised American composer Carlisle Floyd (b. 1925), well known for his musical dramas Susannah (1955) and Of Mice and Men (1970), wrote Willie Stark (1981), commissioned by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and later Houston Grand Opera. Floyd’s libretto and musical score was based upon Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning novel All The King’s Men. Despite the vast amount of publicity it received at the premiere, this opera has only occasionally been performed in the last 35 years. Chapter One discusses Carlisle Floyd’s creation of Willie Stark. Chapter Two discusses the workshop performance of the piece. Chapter …

Faculty Perceptions Of Condensed Online Learning In Higher Education, Harold Irvin Mellieon, Jr. Jan 2016

Faculty Perceptions Of Condensed Online Learning In Higher Education, Harold Irvin Mellieon, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the past 10 years the realm of distance and online education has been expanding very fast. With the help of the Internet, it has cut the need for a student to be in the same space as the instructor in order to receive information and be assessed for learning. As more universities are using distance-learning platforms, faculty members are having issues adjusting and being successful. While the educational landscape continues to be reformed with technology in the United States, there are individuals and institutions that are engaging in distance learning to better serve a larger population of students. It …

The Formation And Implementation Of Interorganizational Relations In The Experiences Of Managers, Furkan Amil Gur Jan 2016

The Formation And Implementation Of Interorganizational Relations In The Experiences Of Managers, Furkan Amil Gur

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Relations between organizations are vital for firms and their strategies. A common approach organizes interorganizational relationships into competition, cooperation, and coopetition. To contribute to this research, in this dissertation I focused on how managers interpret competitive, cooperative, and coopetitive relations with other organizations. Specifically, I studied managers’ interpretations of the characteristics of their interorganizational field and relationships, how they identify their competitors and cooperators, and their accounts of the practices and aspects involved in the planning and implementation of competitive, cooperative, and coopetitive relations. To capture managers’ interpretations, in this study I chose a grounded theory approach, selected the seafood …

Characterization Of Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b And Identification Of Novel Interaction Partners In Drosophila Melanogaster, S. V. Satya Prakash Avva Jan 2016

Characterization Of Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b And Identification Of Novel Interaction Partners In Drosophila Melanogaster, S. V. Satya Prakash Avva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Regulatory elements are DNA sequences which have specialized activities that coordinate the functions of the genome. Promoters, enhancers, locus control regions, boundary elements (or insulator elements) are examples of DNA sequences that have regulatory properties. In transgenic assays insulator elements have been shown to block communication between regulatory regions, such as enhancers and promoters, when placed between these sequences and also protect genes from position effects when bracketing them, thereby affecting gene expression. Insulator sequences are bound by insulator proteins that direct the function of these sequences. One such insulator protein is the Boundary Element Associated Factor-32 (BEAF-32), a 32 …

Anticompetitive Patent Injunctions, Erik Hovenkamp, Tom Cotter Jan 2016

Anticompetitive Patent Injunctions, Erik Hovenkamp, Tom Cotter

Articles

The current approach for determining when courts should award injunctions in patent disputes involves a myopic focus on the hardships an injunction might impose on the litigants and the public. This article demonstrates, however, that courts sometimes could rely instead on a consideration far more relevant to the patent system's goal of promoting innovation: the extent to which the right to exclude was actually a necessary quid pro quo for the plaintiff's decision to bring its products to market. We illustrate the value of this approach with a critique of a recent Federal Circuit decision, Trebro Mfg. Inc. v. FireFly …

Energy Partisanship, Hari M. Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel Jan 2016

Energy Partisanship, Hari M. Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel

Articles

Whether the topic is the Paris Agreement on climate change, greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the Keystone XL pipeline, hydraulic fracturing, offshore drilling, or renewable energy, much of the U.S. policy dialogue about energy and climate change is deeply partisan. Republicans and Democrats debate individual issues in vitriolic sound bites that indicate minimal common ground. For example, officials favoring robust action on climate change are charged with engaging in a “War on Coal.” Those opposed are labeled “members of the Flat Earth Society.” Set against these dysfunctional climate and energy politics, how can progress be made? For people who …

Regional Energy Governance And U.S. Carbon Emissions, Hari Osofsky, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman Jan 2016

Regional Energy Governance And U.S. Carbon Emissions, Hari Osofsky, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman

Articles

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s final rule that limits carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants — the Clean Power Plan — is an environmental regulation that powerfully influences energy law and forms a key part of the U.S. plan to meet its voluntary international commitments under the December 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Even if portions of the Plan are ultimately struck down, almost any viable pathway to lower carbon emissions will require greater integration of these two areas of law to address the large percentage of U.S. emissions from the energy sector. This integration produces both challenges …

Friending The Privacy Regulators, William Mcgeveran Jan 2016

Friending The Privacy Regulators, William Mcgeveran

Articles

According to conventional wisdom, data privacy regulators in the European Union are unreasonably demanding, while their American counterparts are laughably lax. Many observers further assume that any privacy enforcement without monetary fines or other punishment is an ineffective “slap on the wrist.” This Article demonstrates that both of these assumptions are wrong. It uses the simultaneous 2011 investigation of Facebook’s privacy practices by regulators in the United States and Ireland as a case study. These two agencies reached broadly similar conclusions, and neither imposed a traditional penalty. Instead, they utilized “responsive regulation,” where the government emphasizes less adversarial techniques and …

Study Of Condensed Matter Systems With Monte Carlo Simulation On Heterogeneous Computing Systems, Sheng Feng Jan 2016

Study Of Condensed Matter Systems With Monte Carlo Simulation On Heterogeneous Computing Systems, Sheng Feng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We study the Edwards-Anderson model on a simple cubic lattice with a finite constant external field. We employ an indicator composed of a ratio of susceptibilities at finite momenta, which was recently proposed to avoid the difficulties of a zero momentum quantity, for capturing the spin glass phase transition. Unfortunately, this new indicator is fairly noisy, so a large pool of samples at low temperature and small external field are needed to generate results with a sufficiently small statistical error for analysis. We thus implement the Monte Carlo method using graphics processing units to drastically speed up the simulation. We …

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Reflections Of A Counterclerk, Gil Seinfeld Jan 2016

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Reflections Of A Counterclerk, Gil Seinfeld

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

Everyone has strong feelings about Justice Scalia. Lionized by the political right and demonized by the left, he has been among the most polarizing figures in American public life over the course of the last halfcentury. It is hardly surprising, then, that in the weeks since Justice Scalia’s death, the public discourse surrounding his legacy has exhibited something of a split personality. There have, of course, been plenty of appropriately respectful—even admiring—tributes from some of the Justice’s ideological adversaries; and here and there one of the Justice’s champions has acknowledged, with a hint of lament, the acerbic quality of some …

Milkovich V. Lorain Journal Twenty-Five Years Later: The Slow, Quiet, And Troubled Demise Of Liar Libel, Leonard Niehoff, Ashley Messenger

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In Milkovich v. Lorain Journal Co., the Supreme Court held that there is no separate constitutional protection for statements of opinion. It also held that an accusation that an individual lied is a statement of fact actionable in defamation. Lower courts have, correctly in our view, essentially ignored both holdings. In Part I we discuss Milkovich and the infirmities in its reasoning. In Part II we discuss the complex nature of lies and accusations of lies and argue that Milkovich failed to account for that complexity. In Part III we discuss the strategies the lower courts have used to …

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The comprehensive analysis presented here attempts to analyze “newcomer” states in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), primarily the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and United Arab Emirates (UAE), seeking to implement civilian nuclear energy according to their political and economic situations. By investigating their motivations and funding resources for future nuclear projects, this analysis provides guidance for these states in terms of their nuclear infrastructure and nonproliferation. The overall approach of this analysis relies on the factors for the success of civilian nuclear energy programs identified in experiential studies conducted since the Atoms for Peace speech in 1953.This …

Sediment Transport And Bedform Dynamics In Rip Currents, Antony Thorpe Jan 2016

Sediment Transport And Bedform Dynamics In Rip Currents, Antony Thorpe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Simultaneous in-situ measurements of waves, currents, water depth, suspended sediment concentrations and bed profiles were made in a rip channel on Perranporth Beach, Cornwall, UK. Perranporth is a high energy beach (annual offshore Hs = 1.6 m) which is macro-tidal (mean spring range = 6.3 m) and the grain size is medium sand (D50 = 0.28 – 0.34 mm). It can be classified as a low tide bar – rip beach and exhibits a relatively flat inter-tidal zone with pronounced rhythmic low tide bar - rip morphology. Data were collected over two field campaigns, totalling 14 tidal cycles and including …

Forecasting For Control And Environmental Impacts Of Wave Energy Converters, Kieran Monk Jan 2016

Forecasting For Control And Environmental Impacts Of Wave Energy Converters, Kieran Monk

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This work is divided in to two distinct parts. In the first part a model is developed to assess the redistribution of wave energy about an offshore array of overtopping type wave energy converters. The model is based on a classical analytical solution for diffraction about a breakwater which is modified to consider an array of dissipating, reflecting and transmitting breakwater segments, which are used to approximate an overtopping type WEC array. The model is computationally efficient and phase resolving which allows the effect of wave scattering to be investigated for large domains with high resolution irregular wave distributions. It …

The Effects Of Selected Bio-Active Feed Additives On Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Production And Health, Ayodeji Adeoye Jan 2016

The Effects Of Selected Bio-Active Feed Additives On Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Production And Health, Ayodeji Adeoye

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Three investigations were conducted to assess the effects of selected bio-active feed additives on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) growth performance, feed utilisation, haemato-immunological status, intestinal morphology and microbiology. The first experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding tilapia semi-practical diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase, protease or carbohydrase). After six weeks of the dietary supplementation, tilapia fed diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase and carbohydrase) showed enhanced growth performance and higher microvilli density when compared to the control group. Additionally, the intestinal bacterial community profile of tilapia fed the carbohydrase supplemented diet was significantly altered in contrast to those …

Are Biometrics Useful In Discriminating Between Closely-Related Rubus L. Taxa?, Keith Jr Spurgin Jan 2016

Are Biometrics Useful In Discriminating Between Closely-Related Rubus L. Taxa?, Keith Jr Spurgin

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Members of the genus Rubus L., including the Brambles and Raspberries, are known as aggressive weeds and also as plants with beneficial traits. Several wild Bramble species have been improved or crossed to produce marketable varieties and some species are considered to be particularly valuable for their nutritional and medicinal properties. However, for the great majority of botanists they remain a taxonomic enigma. Traditionally batologists (Bramble specialists) have separated taxa mainly by morphological descriptions. Breeders and growers of economically important Rubus species use traditional written descriptions including biometric data, to supplement DNA analysis, drawings and photographs. The following study attempts …
