Chemistry: Faculty Publications (1990-2023)

The title compounds C17H14BrNO2, (I), and C17H15NO3, (II), were obtained from the reaction of 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-naphthalen-1-one and 2-bromonicotinaldehyde in ethanol. Compound (I) was the expected product and compound (II) was the oxidation product from air exposure. In the crystal structure of compound (I), there are no short contacts or hydrogen bonds. The structure does display [pi]-[pi] interactions between adjacent benzene rings and adjacent pyridyl rings. Compound (II) contains two independent molecules, A and B, in the asymmetric unit; both are non-planar, the dihedral angles between the methoxybenzene and 1H-pyridin-2-one mean planes being 35.07 (9)° in A and 35.28 (9)°in B. Deans Of Students’ Responsibilities In Campus Crisis Management, Patrice B. Jackson Jan 2016

Deans Of Students’ Responsibilities In Campus Crisis Management, Patrice B. Jackson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to discover the responsibilities of the dean of students in managing campus crisis. The literature clearly identifies the dean of students as a member of the crisis management team (Benjamin, 2014; Zdziarski, 2001, 2006, 2016). However, a gap in the literature exists concerning the specific responsibilities of the dean of students in responding to campus crisis.

The five phases of crisis management as defined by PPD-8 are Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery (US Department of Homeland Security, 2011). In signing PPD-8, President Obama mandated all state and federal organizations develop comprehensive …

Anthropomorphic Denial Of Fish Pain, Lynne U. Sneddon, Matthew C. Leach Jan 2016

Anthropomorphic Denial Of Fish Pain, Lynne U. Sneddon, Matthew C. Leach

Animal Sentience

Key (2016) affirms that we do not know how the fish brain processes pain but denies — because fish lack a human-like cortex — that fish can feel pain. He affirms that birds, like fish, have a singly-laminated cortex and that the structure of the bird brain is quite different from that of the human brain, yet he does not deny that birds can feel pain. In this commentary we describe how Key cites studies that substantiate mammalian pain but discounts the same kind of data as evidence of fish pain. We suggest that Key's interpretations are illogical, do not …

Fish And Pain: The Politics Of Doubt, Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel Jan 2016

Fish And Pain: The Politics Of Doubt, Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel

Animal Sentience

The commentaries on Key’s (2016) target article make it clear that there is a great deal of doubt about Key’s thesis that fish do not feel pain. The political question therefore is about how we should respond to doubt. If the thesis of Key and others (that fish do not feel pain) is wrong, then the negative impact for fish in terms of suffering caused by human utilisation would be extreme. In the face of this doubt, the very least we can do is to adopt basic welfare precautions to mitigate the potential impact if fish do suffer, with attention …

Understanding Workday Ego Depletion And The Role Of Gratitude Recovery Techniques, Alexandria Steele Jan 2016

Understanding Workday Ego Depletion And The Role Of Gratitude Recovery Techniques, Alexandria Steele

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Everyday activities require the use of self-control resources to regulate behaviors. Ego depletion is the idea that the use of self-control resources on one task results in reduced self-control resources for subsequent tasks. The current study aims to examine ego depletion as a result of a simulated workplace task, design a gratitude recovery technique for workplace ego depletion, and observe child punishment as a potential outcome of workplace ego depletion. A dual-task procedure in which participants completed a complex logic assessment while also listening to a background narrative mimicked workplace environments. Gratitude recovery consisted of recalling people, items, or events, …

Heterogeneous Dynamic Spectrum Access In Cognitive Radio Enabled Vehicular Networks Using Network Softwarization, Swetha R. Reddy Jan 2016

Heterogeneous Dynamic Spectrum Access In Cognitive Radio Enabled Vehicular Networks Using Network Softwarization, Swetha R. Reddy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) is regarded as an emerging technology to solve the spectrum scarcity problem created by static spectrum allocation. In DSA, unlicensed users access idle channels opportunistically, without creating any harmful interference to licensed users. This method will also help to incorporate billions of wireless devices for different applications such as Internet-of-Things, cyber-physical systems, smart grids, etc. Vehicular networks for intelligent transportation cyber-physical systems is emerging concept to improve transportation security and reliability. IEEE 802.11p standard comprising of 7 channels is dedicated for vehicular communications. These channels could be highly congested and may …

A Mixed Methods Assessment Of The Implementation Of Electronic Health Records In Local Health Departments, Karmen S. Williams Jan 2016

A Mixed Methods Assessment Of The Implementation Of Electronic Health Records In Local Health Departments, Karmen S. Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Background: Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation has seen great advances in health care, but the movement is leaving public health agencies behind. EHRs have shown improvement in operational and societal outcomes when implemented. Scarce allocation of resources, lack of trained staff, and security are limiters to implementation, despite the varied benefits of EHRs. The objective of this research is to establish a comprehensive view of EHR implementation in local health departments (LHDs) through assessing the status of implementation, benefits, barriers, and strategies to overcome challenges. Methods: This research uses a mixed methods approach to assess 49 key-informant interviews and 324 …

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel Jan 2016

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Negative attitudes and stigma toward individuals with mental health disorders, particularly substance use disorders, undoubtedly exist in communities around the globe. Lund and Boggero (2014) propose that negative attitudes toward mental health disorders have existed throughout history and across cultures, and there is an ongoing concern of how individuals with mental illness are affected by these negative attitudes (Poreddi, Thimmaiah, Pashupu, Ramachandra, & Badamath, 2014). Increasing levels of empathy in individuals has shown to decrease overall magnitude of negative attitudes; most empathy training tasks, however, are extensive and last several months. The current study examined the possibility of reducing negative …

Determining Unique Agents By Evaluating Web Form Interaction, Ben Cooley Jan 2016

Determining Unique Agents By Evaluating Web Form Interaction, Ben Cooley

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Because of the inherent risks in today’s online activities, it becomes imperative to identify a malicious user masquerading as someone else. Incorporating biometric analysis enhances the confidence of authenticating valid users over the Internet while providing additional layers of security with no hindrance to the end user. Through the analysis of traffic patterns and HTTP Header analysis, the detection and early refusal of robot agents plays a great role in reducing fraudulent login attempts.

Optimization Of Electroencephalograph-Based Classification For Imaginary Motion Brain Computer Interface Study, Sylvia Bhattacharya Jan 2016

Optimization Of Electroencephalograph-Based Classification For Imaginary Motion Brain Computer Interface Study, Sylvia Bhattacharya

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using Electroencephalography (EEG) to detect imaginary motions from brain waves, to interface human and computer is a very nascent and challenging field that started developing rapidly in the past few decades. The technique involves some electrodes attached on the scalp of the patient and the signals generated by the brain while the thought process of the patient is captured and recorded in a computer. This technique of human and computer interfacing is termed as Brain Computer Interface (BCI). Disability is a serious problem of our nation and hence BCI is extremely important in case of people who are incapable of …

The Posthuman Curriculum And The Teacher, John P. Cook Jan 2016

The Posthuman Curriculum And The Teacher, John P. Cook

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this document is to explore education through a posthumanist lens. More specifically, elements of posthumanism will be used to better understand today’s teachers, to provide several overarching educational goals and curricular imperatives, and to inform pedagogical practice. Several posthumanist themes in particular will serve to unify this rather broad consideration of education at varying levels. One such theme is that of blurring boundaries, calling into question distinctions that have been the source of declines in the health of our bodies, our species, and the life systems of which we are constitutive parts. Distinctions too often lead to …

Missing Data In Clinical Trial: A Critical Look At The Proportionality Of Mnar And Mar Assumptions For Multiple Imputation, Theophile B. Dipita Jan 2016

Missing Data In Clinical Trial: A Critical Look At The Proportionality Of Mnar And Mar Assumptions For Multiple Imputation, Theophile B. Dipita

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Randomized control trial is a gold standard of research studies. Randomization helps reduce bias and infer causality. One constraint of these studies is that it depends on participants to obtain the desired data. Whatever the researcher can do, there is a possibility to end up with incomplete data. The problem is more relevant in clinical trials when missing data can be related to the condition under study. The benefits of randomization is compromised by missing data. Multiple imputation is a valid method of treating missing data under the assumption of MAR. Unfortunately this is an unverified assumptions. Current practice advise …

Istar First Light: Characterizing Astronomy Education Research Dissertations In The Istar Database, Stephanie J. Slater, Coty B. Tatge, Paulo S. Bretones, Timothy F. Slater, Sharon P. Schleigh, David H. Mckinnon, Inge Heyer

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There is widespread interest among discipline-based science education researchers to situate their research in the existing scholarly literature base. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to conducting a thorough literature review are unduly hindered in astronomy education research as the venues in which scholarship is reported are fragmented and widely dispersed across journals of varying disciplines. The international STudies of Astronomy education Research (iSTAR) online repository is the result of a concerted international community effort to collect and categorize existing research from peer-reviewed journal articles, dissertations/theses, and grey literature. In a “first light” survey of over 300 U.S. dissertations, we find: (i) work …

Foreword: Why Popular Sovereignty Requires The Due Process Of Law To Challenge "Irrational Or Arbitrary" Statutes, Randy E. Barnett Jan 2016

Foreword: Why Popular Sovereignty Requires The Due Process Of Law To Challenge "Irrational Or Arbitrary" Statutes, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

So-called “substantive due process” has long been criticized progressives and conservatives as a contradictory interpretation of the Due Process Clauses, and one that undermines the popular sovereignty of We the People to govern themselves. In this Foreword, I explain why an individual conception of We the People, leads to a “republican” conception of popular sovereignty that requires a neutral magistrate to adjudicate whether a statute restricting the liberties of the We the People is within the just powers of a legislature to enact. Because a measure that is ultra vires is not truly “a law,” enforcing it against a fellow …

Endemic Corruption In The People's Republic Of China, Emily Tran Jan 2016

Endemic Corruption In The People's Republic Of China, Emily Tran

San Diego International Law Journal

Since taking office in 2013, President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of enforcing his campaign against corruption. The number of bribery convictions issued in recent years and the possibility of receiving the death penalty for serious corruption-related crimes underscores the seriousness with which the CPC considers corruption. The penalties for bribery are harsh compared to most other countries and serve as a strong method of deterrence. Part II of this Article discusses the PRC's anti-corruption laws in the individual and commercial contexts and note the inherent problems in the CPC's enforcement efforts. Part III will discuss the impact of …

Gone But Not Forgotten: Recognizing The Right To Be Forgotten In The U.S. To Lessen The Impacts Of Data Breaches, Ashley Stenning

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment will explore the right to be forgotten, how it is recognized in the European Union, and the trend toward the existence of such a right in the United States. Additionally, this comment will discuss how the right to be forgotten could lessen the impact data breaches have on individuals through the lens of the Ashley Madison hack. Lastly, this comment will discuss how, if the United States narrowed the scope of the European Union’s concept of the right to be forgotten to fit into the United States’ view of privacy and the First Amendment, the impact of data …

Extraterrestrial Property Rights: Utilizing The Resources Of The Final Frontier, John Myers Jan 2016

Extraterrestrial Property Rights: Utilizing The Resources Of The Final Frontier, John Myers

San Diego International Law Journal

In sum, space exploration offers three important opportunities for the United States. First, space exploration promotes scientific progress and international cooperation. Second, space exploration will drive the world economy by creating new jobs and introducing exploited space resources into the markets. Third, space exploration will reverse the decline of the United States in math and science by inspiring children to be interested in STEM fields. More than fifty years later, President Kennedy words still ring true: ;[N]o nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in the race for space
