Design And Implementation Of Reconfigurable Patch Antennas For Wireless Communications, Fei He Dec 2016

Design And Implementation Of Reconfigurable Patch Antennas For Wireless Communications, Fei He

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Reconfigurable patch antennas have drawn a lot of research interest for future wireless communication systems due to their ability to adapt to changes of environmental conditions or system requirements. The features of reconfigurable patch antennas, such as enhanced bandwidths, operating frequencies, polarizations, radiation patterns, etc., enables accommodation of multiple wireless services.

The major objective of this study was to design, fabricate and test two kinds of novel reconfigurable antennas: a dual-frequency antenna array with multiple pattern reconfigurabilities, and a pattern and frequency reconfigurable Yagi-Uda patch antenna. Comprehensive parametric studies were carried out to determine how to design these proposed patch …

Server-Aided Public Key Encryption With Keyword Search, Rongman Chen, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo, Xinyi Huang, Xiaofen Wang, Yongjun Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) is a well-known cryptographic primitive for secure searchable data encryption in cloud storage. Unfortunately, it is inherently subject to the (inside) offline keyword guessing attack (KGA), which is against the data privacy of users. Existing countermeasures for dealing with this security issue mainly suffer from low efficiency and are impractical for real applications. In this paper, we provide a practical and applicable treatment on this security vulnerability by formalizing a new PEKS system named server-aided public key encryption with keyword search (SA-PEKS). In SA-PEKS, to generate the keyword ciphertext/trapdoor, the user needs to …

Processing Incomplete K Nearest Neighbor Search, Xiaoye Miao, Yunjun Gao, Gang Chen, Baihua Zheng, Huiyong Cui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a setS of multidimensional objects and a query object q, a k nearest neighbor (kNN) query finds from S the k closest objects to q. This query is a fundamental problem in database, data mining, and information retrieval research. It plays an important role in a wide spectrum of real applications such as image recognition and location-based services. However, due to the failure of data transmission devices, improper storage, and accidental loss, incomplete data exist widely in those applications, where some dimensional values of data items are missing. In this paper, we systematically study incomplete k nearest neighbor (IkNN) …

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran Dec 2016

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective management of land-side transportation provides the competitive advantage to port terminal operators in improving services and efficient use of limited space in an urban port. We present a hybrid simulation model that combines traffic-flow modeling and discrete-event simulation for land-side port planning and evaluation of traffic conditions for a number of what-if scenarios. We design our model based on a real-world case of a bulk cargo port. The problem is interesting due to complexity of heterogeneous closed-looped internal vehicles and external vehicles traveling in spaces with very limited traffic regulation (no traffic lights, no traffic wardens) and the traffic …

D-Watch: Embracing "Bad" Multipaths For Device-Free Localization With Cots Rfid Devices, Ju Wang, Jie Xiong, Hongbo Jiang, Xiaojiang Chen, Dingyi Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Device-free localization, which does not require any device attached to the target is playing a critical role in many applications such as intrusion detection, elderly monitoring, etc. This paper introduces D-Watch, a device-free system built on top of low cost commodity-off-the-shelf (COTS) RFID hardware. Unlike previous works which consider multipaths detrimental, D-Watch leverages the "bad" multipaths to provide a decimeter level localization accuracy without offline training. D-Watch harnesses the angle-of-arrival (AoA) information from the RFID tags' backscatter signals. The key intuition is that whenever a target blocks a signal's propagation path, the signal power experiences a drop which can be …

This paper reports experiences made at an Asian university in developing a social media platform based on Twitter in the context of a final year capstone project where information systems management students get an opportunity to solve ‘a real-world problem for a real client’. In this case study, the challenge was provided by a faculty member’s request for an interactive social media application which engages less outspoken students in class via a social medium they are familiar with: Twitter. We reconstruct the project’s evolution; describe the main features of the application called ‘TweetBoard’ and share lessons learned in developing a …

Efficient Online Summarization Of Large-Scale Dynamic Networks, Qiang Qu, Siyuan Liu, Feida Zhu, Christian S. Jensen Dec 2016

Efficient Online Summarization Of Large-Scale Dynamic Networks, Qiang Qu, Siyuan Liu, Feida Zhu, Christian S. Jensen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information diffusion in social networks is often characterized by huge participating communities and viral cascades of high dynamicity. To observe, summarize, and understand the evolution of dynamic diffusion processes in an informative and insightful way is a challenge of high practical value. However, few existing studies aim to summarize networks for interesting dynamic patterns. Dynamic networks raise new challenges not found in static settings, including time sensitivity, online interestingness evaluation, and summary traceability, which render existing techniques inadequate. We propose dynamic network summarization to summarize dynamic networks with millions of nodes by only capturing the few most interesting nodes or …

Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption With Partially Hidden Access Structure And Its Application To Privacy-Preserving Electronic Medical Record System In Cloud Environment, Lixian Liu, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li Dec 2016

Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption With Partially Hidden Access Structure And Its Application To Privacy-Preserving Electronic Medical Record System In Cloud Environment, Lixian Liu, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the development of cloud computing, more and more sensitive data are uploaded to cloud by companies or individuals, which brings forth new challenges for outsourced data security and privacy. Ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) provides fine-grained access control of encrypted data in the cloud; in a CP-ABE scheme, an access structure, also referred to as ciphertext-policy, is sent along with a ciphertext explicitly, and anyone who obtains a ciphertext can know the access structure associated with the ciphertext. In certain applications, access structures contain very sensitive information and must be protected from everyone except the users whose private key attributes …

Domain Identification For Intention Posts On Online Social Media, Thai Le Luong, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hai-Trieu Dang, Xuan Hieu Phan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today, more and more Internet users are willing to share their feeling, activities, and even their intention about what they plan to do on online social media. We can easily see posts like "I plan to buy an apartment this year", or "We are looking for a tour for 3 people to Nha Trang" on online forums or social networks. Recognizing those user intents on online social media is really useful for targeted advertising. However fully understanding user intents is a complicated and challenging process which includes three major stages: user intent filtering, intent domain identification, and intent parsing and …

Attacking Android Smartphone Systems Without Permissions, Mon Kywe Su, Yingjiu Li, Kunal Petal, Michael Grace Dec 2016

Attacking Android Smartphone Systems Without Permissions, Mon Kywe Su, Yingjiu Li, Kunal Petal, Michael Grace

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Android requires third-party applications to request for permissions when they access critical mobile resources, such as users' personal information and system operations. In this paper, we present the attacks that can be launched without permissions. We first perform call graph analysis, component analysis and data-flow analysis on various parts of Android framework to retrieve unprotected APIs. Unprotected APIs provide a way of accessing resources without any permissions. We then exploit selected unprotected APIs and launch a number of attacks on Android phones. We discover that without requesting for any permissions, an attacker can access to device ID, phone service state, …

Metroeye: Smart Tracking Your Metro Rips Underground, Weixi Gu, Ming Jin, Zimu Zhou, Costas J. Spanos, Lin Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Metro has become the first choice of traveling for tourists and citizens in metropolis due to its efficiency and convenience. Yet passengers have to rely on metro broadcasts to know their locations because popular localization services (e.g. GPS and wireless localization technologies) are often inaccessible underground. To this end, we propose MetroEye, an intelligent smartphone-based tracking system for metro passengers underground. MetroEye leverages low-power sensors embedded in modern smartphones to record ambient contextual features, and infers the state of passengers (Stop, Running, and Interchange) during an entire metro trip using a Conditional Random Field (CRF) model. MetroEye further provides arrival …

Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Young People's Literature of Algerian Immigration in France" Anne Schneider discusses questions of language, hybridity, and heritage in some works for young people published in France about Algeria and/or Algerian-French identity, by Leïla Sebbar, Jean-Paul Nozière, Azouz Begag, and Michel Piquemal. She argues for the need for an intercultural education at primary school that uses literature about immigration to highlight questions of place, belonging, exile and language. Schneider's focus is on Begag's Un train pour chez nous (2001) and Piquemal's Mon miel, ma douceur (2004). These texts use linguistic hybridity and an emphasis on common human experiences …

Lossy Key Encapsulation Mechanism And Its Applications, Yamin Liu, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Haiyang Xue Dec 2016

Lossy Key Encapsulation Mechanism And Its Applications, Yamin Liu, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Haiyang Xue

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce a new notion, lossy key encapsulation mechanism (lossy KEM), which enhances the notion of key encapsulation mechanism with lossiness, and can be more efficient than lossy trapdoor functions. We show that lossy KEM can be constructed from lossy trapdoor functions, lossy trapdoor relations, and entropic projective hashing. Using lossy KEM as a building block, several previous constructions of lossy encryption and deterministic public key encryption can be generalized and improved in efficiency.

The Relationship Of The Attributional Dimensions Of Emotional Differentiation On Attributional Dimensions Of Technology Readiness For Orthotic And Prosthetic Clinicians, Gerald E. Stark Dec 2016

The Relationship Of The Attributional Dimensions Of Emotional Differentiation On Attributional Dimensions Of Technology Readiness For Orthotic And Prosthetic Clinicians, Gerald E. Stark

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Some individuals and groups seem to adopt emerging ideas and innovations more readily than others. Since any emerging innovation or technology inherently comes with a higher degree of uncertainty and risk, the group or individual must deal with the anxiety created by innovative behavior. Individuals who are less anxious and risk averse may tend to adopt innovations more easily than others. Within any social group, individuals can be classified into adopter categories based on their rate of adoption and capacity for risk and anxiety. Individuals who are more susceptible to anxiety in general, may seek the emotional scaffolding of their …

Here, In This Place: An Essay Collection, Meghan M. O'Dea

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The personal essay is difficult to define in part because of the diversity of structures and subjects that can fall under this category within creative nonfiction. Defining the form in terms of the fragment, specifically the fragment as it was envisioned by Romantic philosophers, acknowledges the contemporary personal essay’s roots in both ancient literature and the Essais of Michel de Montaigne, as well as its modernist and postmodernist evolution. The creative portion of this thesis consists of a collection of essays by Meghan O’Dea entitled Here, In This Place. The introductory essay discusses how the theory of the fragment applies …

Consent Confusion, Aya Gruber Dec 2016

Consent Confusion, Aya Gruber

Cardozo Law Review

The slogans are ubiquitous: "Only 'Yes' Means 'Yes"'" "Got Consent?", "Consent is Hot, Assault is Not!" Clear consent is the rule, but the meaning of sexual consent is far from clear. The current state of confusion is evident in the numerous competing views about what constitutes mental agreement (grudging acceptance or eager desire?) and what comprises performative consent (passive acquiescence or an enthusiastic "yes"?). This paper seeks to clear up the consent confusion. It charts the contours of the sexual consent framework, categorizes different definitions of affirmative consent, and critically describes arguments for and against affirmative consent. Today's widespread uncertainty …

Maximinimalism, Jamal Greene Dec 2016

Maximinimalism, Jamal Greene

Cardozo Law Review

The article explores Chief Justice John Roberts' judicial approach, characterizing it as "maximinimalism"—a blend of narrow decision-making with deep, impactful reasoning. While Roberts is often seen as a minimalist for his emphasis on deciding cases narrowly, his rulings in significant cases like Citizens United v. FEC, Shelby County v. Holder, and NFIB v. Sebelius reveal a deeper, more substantive approach that challenges the law, thus embodying maximalist tendencies. This duality allows the Court to influence the law profoundly while maintaining judicial restraint.

Findings suggest more …

Concurrent Biological, Electromagnetic Pulse, And Cyber Attacks - A Challenge To The Interagency Response, Patricia Rohrbeck Dec 2016

Concurrent Biological, Electromagnetic Pulse, And Cyber Attacks - A Challenge To The Interagency Response, Patricia Rohrbeck

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The U.S. including its military depends on an electrical grid and electricity-based critical infrastructure. An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and cyber attack can disable not just a significant portion of the electrical grid and critical infrastructure, but also the networkcentric military response to such an attack. There is a large range of actors that might attempt EMP attacks against the U.S.. Health surveillance systems are network-centric, and if mass destruction is the goal of an adversary, launching a biological attack concurrently with EMP and cyber attacks may achieve this goal. Current agency response plans focus on one WMD attack at a …

Yeast Dynamin Associates With The Garp Tethering Complex For Endosome-To-Golgi Traffic, Uma Saimani Dec 2016

Yeast Dynamin Associates With The Garp Tethering Complex For Endosome-To-Golgi Traffic, Uma Saimani

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Yeast dynamin, Vacuolar Protein Sorting 1 (Vps1), has been implicated in recycling proteins and lipids from the endosome to the trans-Golgi network (TGN). Previous research showed a genetic interaction of Vps1 with all components of the GARP tethering complex, which anchors vesicles at the late Golgi membrane. I used the yeast two-hybrid system and pinpointed a 33 amino acid segment of Vps51, a GARP subunit, that interacts with Vps1. Based on sequence homology between Vps51 and its mammalian homolog ANG2 in the 33 amino acid stretch, I identified two key residues of Vps51, E127, and Y129, that bind Vps1. The …

In situ was measured across three settings: each participant's …

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore Dec 2016

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis is a critical examination into how American mainstream news media outlets often neglect to incorporate religious, cultural and historical context into their coverage of the Middle East. I show through my research and analysis that the news coverage of the Middle East, even at the highest echelons of American journalism, is often lacking in sophistication in terms of cultural and religious context, sometimes to the point of affecting its fairness and accuracy. The danger of this is that it has the power to grossly simplify and reduce to an “us versus them” frame an entire contingent of the …

Consumer Perceptions About Pilot Training: An Emotional Response., Timothy G. Rosser Dec 2016

Consumer Perceptions About Pilot Training: An Emotional Response., Timothy G. Rosser

Theses and Dissertations

Civilian pilot training has followed a traditional path for several decades. With a potential pilot shortage approaching, ICAO proposed a new paradigm in pilot training methodology called the Multi-Crew Pilot License. This new methodology puts a pilot in the cockpit of an airliner with significantly less flight time experience than the traditional methodology. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent gender, country of origin and pilot training methodology effect an aviation consumer’s willingness to fly. Additionally, this study attempted to determine what emotions mediate a consumer’s decision. This study surveyed participants from India and the United …
