Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary Sacred Waters Film, Cory B. Jones Dec 2016

Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary Sacred Waters Film, Cory B. Jones

Communication Studies

The debate to designate a National Marine Sanctuary off the Central Coast of California has been alive for nearly 30 years.

With a recent move by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to nominate the stretch of water as a sanctuary the issue has become one of great concern to local stakeholders.

With concern for additional bureaucracy and regulation that could negatively impact the local economy people choose to stand in opposition. Yet many that are concerned for the future of the region's waters want the protections from offshore oil drilling and other harmful practices that a Sanctuary would …

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf Dec 2016

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) is made up of three significant domains. The most important domain is the intracellular domain where the dimerization and autophosphorylation occur. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) interacts with specific FGFR to regulate many cellular processes during the embryonic stage. Furthermore, FGF is significant for adults because FGF plays an important role in regulating cellular differentiation as well as wound healing. The cellular regulating processes are initiated through binding FGF to heparin followed by binding FGF/heparin to FGFR to form FGF/heparin/FGFR complex. Thus, FGFR is dimerized and autophosphorylated. The phosphorylation of FGFR triggers downstream signaling pathways, which …

Hess, Judd Hollander

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Diagnostic testing is an integral component of patient evaluation in the emergency department (ED). Emergency clinicians frequently use diagnostic testing to more confidently exclude "worst-case" diagnoses rather than to determine the most likely etiology for a presenting complaint. Increased utilization of diagnostic testing has not been associated with reductions in disease-related mortality but has led to increased overall healthcare costs and other unintended consequences (e.g., incidental findings requiring further workup, unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation or potentially nephrotoxic contrast). Shared decision making (SDM) presents an opportunity for clinicians to discuss the benefits and harms associated with diagnostic testing with patients …

To College They Go: A Multiple Case Study Of Seven Homeschooled Graduates' Transition From Home To College, Shellie Fink-Glass

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore and capture how Pennsylvania homeschooled graduates transitioned from their homeschooled academic environment to a collegiate one. This research was founded on the need for further research addressing homeschoolers and their transition into college. Existing literature falls short which not only documents the first-hand, personal experiences taken directly from homeschooled graduates, but from their mothers, as well. Five research questions were developed to guide this study. Questionnaires and oral interviews were used to capture the unique personal experiences from both the students and their mothers. During the analysis phase, five recurring …

Development Of A Measure Of Model Fidelity For Mental Health Crisis Resolution Teams, Brynmor Lloyd-Evans, Gary R. Bond, Torleif Ruud, Ada Ivanecka

Dartmouth Scholarship

Crisis Resolution Teams (CRTs) provide short-term intensive home treatment to people experiencing mental health crisis. Trial evidence suggests CRTs can be effective at reducing hospital admissions and increasing satisfaction with acute care. When scaled up to national level however, CRT implementation and outcomes have been variable. We aimed to develop and test a fidelity scale to assess adherence to a model of best practice for CRTs, based on best available evidence.

Winds Of Change? Exploring Climate Change-Driven Migration And Related Impacts In The Pacific Northwest, Lara Whitely Binder, Jason R. Jurjevich Dec 2016

Winds Of Change? Exploring Climate Change-Driven Migration And Related Impacts In The Pacific Northwest, Lara Whitely Binder, Jason R. Jurjevich

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on the Pacific Northwest’s communities, economy, and natural systems. These impacts – which include reductions in summer water supply, the potential for more winter flooding and forest fires, threats to public health, and damage to coastal infrastructure due to sea level rise – will require changes in how communities evaluate, manage, and mitigate environmental risks.

Despite these challenges, some have suggested that the region may be relatively well off compared to other areas of the U.S. and the world. This has led to growing speculation by the media, bloggers, and the public …

Evaluation Of A Supervisor Training Program For Odot’S Ecodrive Program, Donald M. Truxillo, John Macarthur, Leslie B. Hammer, Talya N. Bauer

TREC Final Reports

Eco-driving consists of using energy-efficient approaches to driving aimed at reducing fuel consumption and, ultimately, CO2 emissions. A previous study found that an EcoDrive informational campaign was effective at increasing the use of eco-driving behaviors, but only when employees perceived that their supervisor supported the program and when they were personally motivated to perform the eco-driving behaviors. In order to build upon the findings of our previous study, the present study focused on increasing the use of eco-driving behaviors through an informational eco-driving campaign combined with supervisor training to support the use of eco-driving practices.

In this study we collected …

Research & Strategic Partnerships: Quarterly Review, Volume 3, Issue 3, Portland State University. Research & Strategic Partnerships

Portland State Research Magazine

This issue of the Quarterly Review focuses on population health and strategies to improve it. Although these strategies may be revised and added to in the years ahead, the “Triple Aim” of addressing health costs, improving the experience of care, and maintaining healthy populations will undoubtedly remain unchanged, as will our drive to better understand the role of public health in developing resilient people and communities.

The research highlighted in this issue also bears witness to the importance of community and the ways in which Portland State University and the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health are empowering communities to live …

Implementing Standards-Based Grading In A Suburban Middle School: A Change Leadership Plan, Cody Huisman Dec 2016

Implementing Standards-Based Grading In A Suburban Middle School: A Change Leadership Plan, Cody Huisman

Dissertations

The purpose of the Change Leadership Plan was to describe a current issue facing a school district, creating a vision of change to end that obstacle. In the case of this particular change plan, the problem is the traditional grading system at a suburban middle school. The plan advocates for a change to a standards-based grading system. Several steps describing change are examined: describing the current situation, conducting research to support change, and designing a vision of what success will look like after standards-based grading is established. The research conducted was done through both surveys and group interviews. Research participants …

Identifying The Potential For Cross-Fishery Spillovers: A Network Analysis Of Alaskan Permitting Patterns, Working Paper, Resources For The Future, Ethan T. Addicott, Kailin Kroetz, Matthew Reimer, James N. Sanchirico, Daniel K. Lew, Justine Huetteman Dec 2016

Identifying The Potential For Cross-Fishery Spillovers: A Network Analysis Of Alaskan Permitting Patterns, Working Paper, Resources For The Future, Ethan T. Addicott, Kailin Kroetz, Matthew Reimer, James N. Sanchirico, Daniel K. Lew, Justine Huetteman

ISER Reports

Many fishermen own a portfolio of permits across multiple fisheries, creating an opportunity for fishing effort to adjust across fisheries and enabling impacts from a policy change in one fishery to spill over into other fisheries. In regions with a large and diverse number of permits and fisheries, joint-permitting can result in a complex system, making it difficult to understand the potential for cross-fishery substitution. In this study, we construct a network representation of permit ownership to characterize interconnectedness between Alaska commercial fisheries due to cross-fishery permitting. The Alaska fisheries network is highly connected, suggesting that most fisheries are vulnerable …

Exposing The Threads: A Critical Interrogation Of The Policies, Practices And (Non-) Performativity Of Diversity In The City Of Toronto, Shana Almeida

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper explores “diversity” as a discourse, and thus as a mechanism of power. Specifically, this paper invites a critical interrogation into the racial logics of diversity and how political power of government and its policies have been constructed through race, which in turn binds the racialized body against the changing landscape of the City.
