A Study Of The Action Of Risperidone At 5-Ht2a Receptors, Supriya A. Gaitonde Jan 2016

A Study Of The Action Of Risperidone At 5-Ht2a Receptors, Supriya A. Gaitonde

Theses and Dissertations

Risperidone is an ‘atypical’ antipsychotic and is approved by the USFDA mainly for the treatment of schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder. Risperidone (an SDA or serotonin-dopamine antagonist) has ~20-fold higher affinity at 5-HT2A receptors over dopamine D2 receptors, which makes it more efficacious against the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and less liable to causing extrapyramidal side effects than ‘typical’ antipsychotics.

The major goal of the current investigation was to study the structure of risperidone and to identify the minimum structural features required for 5-HT2A receptor affinity that retain antagonist action. The structure of risperidone was systematically …

The Development Of Motuporamine Derivatives And An Investigation Into Their Biological Properties, Kristen Skruber Jan 2016

The Development Of Motuporamine Derivatives And An Investigation Into Their Biological Properties, Kristen Skruber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project investigates the synthesis of a class of compounds derived from a marine-based natural product and probes how iterative changes to its structure affect its derivatives' biological efficacy. The compound class of interest are the motuporamines which were isolated from the sea sponge Xestospongia exigua collected off the coast of Motupore island in Papua, New Guinea. The compounds for this project are predicated upon dihydromotuporamine C (Motu33), the compound that has been shown to be both cytotoxic to MDA-MB231 breast carcinoma cells and has antimetastatic efficacy. The motuporamine scaffold contains a large fifteen-membered saturated macrocycle and an appended polyamine …

Pyroglutamylated Amyloid Beta Peptides Enhance Non-Fibrillogenic Aggregation Of The Unmodified Peptide, Gregory Goldblatt Jan 2016

Pyroglutamylated Amyloid Beta Peptides Enhance Non-Fibrillogenic Aggregation Of The Unmodified Peptide, Gregory Goldblatt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is accompanied by abnormal extracellular deposition of amyloid b (Ab) peptide. This has led to the amyloid cascade hypothesis, causatively relating Ab with AD. While Ab deposits assume a fibrillar cross-b structure, prefibrillar oligomers of Ab have been identified as the main cytotoxic agents in AD. Pyroglutamylated amyloid beta (AbpE) peptides are N-terminally truncated and pyroglutamylated (at Glu3 or Glu11) Ab molecules that display enhanced cytotoxicity and represent up to 50% of total Ab in AD brains. AbpE significantly enhances the toxicity of unmodified Ab by an unknown mechanism. Although in situ Ab populations are heterogeneous, the …

By Book And School: The Politics Of Educational Reform In France And Algeria During The Early Third Republic, Michael Brooks Jan 2016

By Book And School: The Politics Of Educational Reform In France And Algeria During The Early Third Republic, Michael Brooks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the era of New Imperialism, the newly-formed French Third Republic continued France's civilizing mission both in France and in Algeria. Founded on a series of reforms, republican leaders and educational experts judged primary level education taught in the French language to be the most effective means of uniting a linguistically and culturally diverse population in the metropole. These republican values, based on revolutionary tenet of universality, would help France to sustain a republican regime, would thwart attempts to reestablish monarchical rule, and would teach future French citizens what it meant to be politically active. At the same time, another …

Novel Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration Implementations Of The Support Vector Machine Classifier On Fpga, Hanaa Hussain, Khaled Benkrid, Hüseyi̇n Şeker

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The support vector machine (SVM) is one of the highly powerful classifiers that have been shown to be capable of dealing with high-dimensional data. However, its complexity increases requirements of computational power. Recent technologies including the postgenome data of high-dimensional nature add further complexity to the construction of SVM classifiers. In order to overcome this problem, hardware implementations of the SVM classifier have been proposed to benefit from parallelism to accelerate the SVM. On the other hand, those implementations offer limited flexibility in terms of changing parameters and require the reconfiguration of the whole device. The latter interrupts the operation …

Design, Synthesis And Physicochemical Analysis Of Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes For Application In Phototherapy And Nucleic Acid Sensing, Erin Melissa Wachter

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Current chemotherapeutics exhibit debilitating side effects as a result of their toxicity to healthy tissues. Reducing these side effects by developing chemotherapeutics with selectivity for cancer cells is an active area of research. Phototherapy is one promising modality for selective treatment, where drug molecules are “turned on” when irradiated with light, reducing damage to healthy tissues by spatially restricting the areas exposed to irradiation. A second approach to improve selectivity is to exploit the differences in cancerous versus healthy cells, such as increased metabolism and/or upregulation of cell surface receptors. Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are candidates for phototherapy due to their …

Automatic Machine Learning-Guided Methods For 3d Synapse Quantification In Confocal Neuron Images, Jonathan William Sanders Jan 2016

Automatic Machine Learning-Guided Methods For 3d Synapse Quantification In Confocal Neuron Images, Jonathan William Sanders

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores computational methods for automatically detecting and quantifying synapses in complex 3D neuronal images. The resulting approach is a novel combination of traditional image processing, machine learning algorithms, and multi-channel comparison methods designed to overcome the unique challenges posed by these images. The methods investigated combine the strengths of each of these components in order to produce an overall method that is capable of fully detecting the synapses in large 3D confocal neuron images with minimal interaction. Human annotation of 3D neuron images remains prohibitively difficult and subjective, and computational analysis tools are highly desirable in the expanding …

Epigenetic factors control gene expression via modulating chromatin conformation. Current studies on epigenetics mainly focus on biochemical mechanisms or functions of epigenetic factors in cancer or neurobiology. The underlying mechanism for epigenetic regulation in early embryonic development, particularly neural and neural crest development, is not well understood. In this thesis, the model organism, Xenopus laevis, is used to study epigenetic factors – polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) and heterochromatin protein 1 beta (HP1β) in neural and neural crest development. In chapter one, the processes of neural and neural crest development are described, and the concepts of epigenetic mechanisms, such as …

Teachers' Perspectives Of Balanced Assessment, Michele Branch Branch Jan 2016

Teachers' Perspectives Of Balanced Assessment, Michele Branch Branch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Current research indicates that when properly implemented, professional development (PD) can positively affect teaching practice and student academic achievement. However, teachers at Lincoln High School (pseudonym) questioned the effectiveness of their district's PD: Balanced Assessment. Given the paucity of research on teachers' viewpoints of PD and how it impacts implementation, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine teachers' perspectives of Balanced Assessment as it relates to implementation in the classroom. Guided by Knowles adult learning theory, which states that adults need to make a connection to what they are learning to real life, this study examined 4 …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cyclic Polypeptoids By Organo-Mediated Controlled Zwitterionic Ring-Opening Polymerization And Development Of Redox-Responsive Polypeptoid Micelles As Drug Delivery Carriers, Ang Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Peptoids are peptidomimetic polymers, which have attracted much attention over the past two decades. They have similar building blocks to peptides, and the similarity makes the backbone of peptoids hydrophilic and biocompatible.1 Two types of peptoid polymers are under development. One is sequence-defined peptoids, which exhibit excellent bioactivities.2 Another one is polypeptoids. The good biocompatibility and highly tunable side chain substituents allow polypeptoids to be used broadly in future biomedical applications. Varying polymer architectures, including linear polymers, cyclic polymers, comb-like polymers, and dendrimers can provide distinctive properties to the polymers. Cyclic polymers employ a cyclic architecture and lack chain ends, …

Predicting Academic Success Of Health Science Students For First Year Anatomy And Physiology, R Anderton, P Chivers

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Students commencing tertiary education enter through a number of traditional and alternative academic pathways. As a result, tertiary institutions encounter a broad range of students, varying in demographic, previous education, characteristics and academic achievement. In recent years, the relatively constant increase in tertiary applications in Australia has not translated to an increase in student retention or graduate numbers. The Health Sciences discipline typically falls within this paradigm, prompting various approaches to promote academic success and overall student retention. In this study, the demographic and previous education of health science students at an Australian University, were analysed along with first year …

Modeling Nosocomial Disease Outbreaks Using A Combined Differential Equations And Agent Based-Modeling Approach, Cody Eion Fitzgerald

Honors Theses and Capstones

A nosocomial infection is an infection that a patient develops while in a hospital or healthcare related setting, also known as a hospital acquired infection (HAI).This project has two foci: firstly to model a HAI within an individual, then secondly to understand community-level propagation effects of a nosocomial infection within a hospital ward. An analysis of a novel system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (representing the HAI attack and immune response within an individual) was first completed. More specifically the model includes an s parameter that allows frailty to be patient specific. After the dynamic behaviors of the model …

Evaluation Of Ray-Path Integrals In Geometrical Optics, John A. Adam, Michael Pohrivchak Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Ray-Path Integrals In Geometrical Optics, John A. Adam, Michael Pohrivchak

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A brief summary of the physical context to this paper is provided, and the deviation angle undergone by an incident ray after k internal reflections inside a transparent unit sphere is formulated. For radially inhomogeneous spheres (in particular) this angle is related to a ray-path integral; an improper integral for which there are relatively few known exact analytical forms, even for simple refractive index profiles n(r). Thus for a linear profile the integral is a combination of incomplete elliptic integrals of the first and third kinds (though not all are as complicated as this). The ray-path integral is evaluated …

Coastal Connectivity And Spatial Subsidy From A Microbial Perspective, Christin Säwström, Glenn A. Hyndes, Bradley D. Eyre, Megan J. Huggett, Matthew W. Fraser, Paul S. Lavery, Paul G. Thomson, Flavia Tarquinio, P. D. Steinberg, Bonnie Laverock

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The transfer of organic material from one coastal environment to another can increase production in recipient habitats in a process known as spatial subsidy. Microorganisms drive the generation, transformation, and uptake of organic material in shallow coastal environments, but their significance in connecting coastal habitats through spatial subsidies has received limited attention. We address this by presenting a conceptual model of coastal connectivity that focuses on the flow of microbially mediated organic material in key coastal habitats. Our model suggests that it is not the difference in generation rates of organic material between coastal habitats but the amount of organic …

Conserving California Condors In The 1980s, Noel F.R. Snyder Jan 2016

Conserving California Condors In The 1980s, Noel F.R. Snyder

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

By the late 1970s, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) was in serious trouble, with probably no more than about 30 birds left in existence, all in a mountainous region just north of Los Angeles that is vegetated mainly in chaparral and grasslands. All estimates of population size and trends offered since the early condor studies by Carl Koford in the 1930s and 1940s indicated a continuing decline toward extinction, and it appeared that few years were left before the species would be gone (see Koford, 1953; Wilbur, 1978). Evidently, the conservation steps that had been taken, including the …

Improving Far-Uv Cd Prediction With The Dipole Interaction Model, Akongnwi Cheo Jungong Jan 2016

Improving Far-Uv Cd Prediction With The Dipole Interaction Model, Akongnwi Cheo Jungong

Theses and Dissertations

Among the physical methods available for studying protein structures, CD stands out as a property that is easy to measure yet remarkably difficult to predict theoretically. The basic principle underlying the CD of polypeptides and proteins is reasonably understood: the mixing of electronic transitions of monomer groups in the context of a chiral environment of helices gives rise to transitions that are both electronically and magnetically allowed. Despite knowledge on the fundamentals of CD, accurate theoretical prediction is still a major challenge. A better theoretical understanding of protein CD would facilitate a fuller interpretation of protein CD experiments.

Extensive theoretical …
